Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau

Here is a transcript from today's club chat with Gary Housteau.

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:02:17 PM)
Hi everyone. Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Cincinnatibuck (Nov 26, 2003 1:02:27 PM)
Same to you

Cincinnatibuck (Nov 26, 2003 1:03:15 PM)
I thought Ginn's team making it into the playoffs would help him in the Mr. Football voting.

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:04:33 PM)
Hi Cincinnatibuck...I thought Ginn had a legitmate chance to win the award regardless of making a respectable appearance in the playoffs. No one must have seen him play. He deserved to be a finalist.

mcorf (Nov 26, 2003 1:04:52 PM)
You said you would have some news on MC in December. Anything yet you could share?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:10:35 PM)
Nothing new yet on the Clarett news in December. If something won't have to ask'll know it.

bucknut13 (Nov 26, 2003 1:04:58 PM)
Gary, you posted an article after speaking with F. Lenix and he stated he was going to play RB next year along with LB, do you think he could be a RB at the next level or is he slated for defense? Thanks.

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:14:09 PM) Fred Lenix run in track first this year and then watch him run next year for the football team and you will know the answer for yourself. Up to now he's been just toying with playing running back...he needs to really focus on that and he will be tremendous. If not he can play linebacker at the next level...he has the nose for the ball and the speed.

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Nov 26, 2003 1:05:39 PM)
Gary, is it a done deal that Ira Guilford goes back to safety next year?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:11:37 PM)
Minnesota...until we find a true running back...say Erik Haw...I think Guilford goes no where.

mcorf (Nov 26, 2003 1:03:22 PM)
How is Darius Hiley coming along and where does he fit in next year? Also, does Ted Ginn start next year at CB?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:07:45 PM)
mcorf, Ginn may have to redshirt his first year because of the Olympic Trials and possible run at the Olympics so that's a good thing for him and for Ohio State. He's talented enough to be on the field if he doesn't make the Olympics. He's the real deal at cornerback.

Cincinnatibuck (Nov 26, 2003 1:05:51 PM)
I would like to see Hiley and Ginn return kick offs

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:15:28 PM)
I would like to see Hiley and Ginn returning kickoffs as well Cincy. You should see the high school highlight tapes of both of these guys. I know it's the Senate League BS but it's still tremendous footage.

andy3 (Nov 26, 2003 1:03:47 PM)
Gary how long before Fred Davis Commits to us? I am thinking around Dec 5 when he visits us.

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:05:40 PM)
mcorf...Hiley is patiently biding his time... I still think he will be a contributor on offense in a big way.

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:08:57 PM)
Fred Davis will commit to OSU on national tv Jan. 3 at the U.S. Army All-American game. When he actually makes to OSU winter or spring is still to be determined.

mcorf (Nov 26, 2003 1:14:37 PM)
Gary, rivals states that Mitchum fell in love with Michigan last week. Do you think we could lose him also? Does Braxton come by default?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:19:04 PM)
mcorf..we can't lose Mitchum because we never had him but I think that would definitely be a possibility. I still think we have a good shot at Mitchum...we really need Mitchum. I talked to Braxton yesterday at the school and will have an update on him over the holiday. Braxton isn't visiting OSU officially but both parties still can make it work. Braxton is touring the South on his visits.

andy3 (Nov 26, 2003 1:06:44 PM)
Is Louis Irrizarry good to go or does he still have some legal problems?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:16:32 PM)
andy Louis still has a few more hurdles but he should be ready to go in the spring is my best guess. No rush for him, just get the whole episode behind him first.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 26, 2003 1:18:58 PM)
Hey Gary, just wanted to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. I assume you are gearing up for the state finals. The Elder-St. Ed's game should be a classic, as will Benedictine-Kenton and Amanda-Clearcreek/Academy. Is there one game in particular you want to see? Have a great time and I'll talk to you Sun. or Mon.

andy3 (Nov 26, 2003 1:19:10 PM)
Gary are you going to state? If so what are your predictions?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:21:36 PM)
Yes for all six games. I haven't picked Ed's yet so why start... Elder in D I for a repeat. I think Benedictine and Kenton will be a great one...I'm all for the Bengals in D III. Avon Lake in DII.. St. Joe's in D IV. The other two games are for entertainment purposes only. Smile.

Susan (Nov 26, 2003 1:21:47 PM)
what track and field events will ginn attempt to make a spot on the olympic team?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:23:50 PM)
Hi Steve..I am interested in the Clearcreek game because they beat Warren JFK and Academy has been ridiculous. Benedictine -Kenton game is a great one. I love Raymond Williams as everyone knows. Have a great turkey day!

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:25:27 PM)
Hi Susan, Ginn is a hurdler first and foremost and one of the best in the country at any level. And he's so young. He also could be a 400 meter man as well. If he doesn't make it in 2004 than he will surely have a shot in 2008. He's a pure hurdler.

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Nov 26, 2003 1:25:37 PM)
Gary, who do you think our OL starters will be for next year's opener?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:28:09 PM)
LT Sims, LG Coleman, RG Schafer (love Tim Schafer...biggest surprise for next year...great looking lineman body) LT Barton. I really love the right side of the line.

Guest (Nov 26, 2003 1:28:15 PM)
Would Shaun Lane be a good punt returner?

Guest (Nov 26, 2003 1:28:22 PM)
Would Shauan Lane be a good punt returner?

mcorf (Nov 26, 2003 1:28:28 PM)
Any surprise offers or commits in the works?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:30:25 PM)
I wish I could say Raymond Williams but I can't at this time anyway. I've always been a proponent of the idea that it would be so Tressel-like to offer the Mr. Football award winner an automatic scholarship as a reward

Guest (Nov 26, 2003 1:30:41 PM)
How many incoming recruits do you see starting early this year?

Kirk (Nov 26, 2003 1:31:24 PM)
edbuck51 wanted to know: "Would Shaun Lane be a good punt returner" and "How many incoming recruits do you see starting this year?"

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:32:39 PM)
But that is a whole other topic of debate.

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:35:53 PM)
edbuck...Shaun Lane would be a great punt returner just like his father Garcia Lane was. Shaun is so very elusive in open space and very much a north-south running back. As far as recruits starting next year...Haw has the best chance at some point in the season I think. And Freeman will play a lot.

Cincinnatibuck (Nov 26, 2003 1:36:04 PM)
I never understood the knock on playing on a city league team. Most time it's not a lack of talent on the teams, but a lack of the numbers these coaches have to work with.

Kirk (Nov 26, 2003 1:36:51 PM)
edbuck51 - the chat is moderated so the questions are coming here first and I am posting them one at a time... we're backed up by a few questions here, but we'll try to get them all in before 2

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:39:35 PM)
Cincinnatibuck...the knock is the competition that city leagues team play in general not the individual team or player. And typically the programs aren't as established as other programs in the burbs for instance. I don't mean to generalize but that's how it is for the most part. The Cleveland Senate League for instance is borderline ridiculous in a bad way.

Bucci's boys (Nov 26, 2003 1:39:50 PM)
Gary, William Brody has dominated, how come he's getting so little attention, size and speed

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:43:14 PM)
Hi bucci...Brody could use a little more weight on his very nice rangy frame but he is very athletic and his motor seems to be going pretty well. I don't know his situation but I will ask this weekend. He's a playmaker on defense for the Bengals and they will need him to play well against a big time passing attack. I'm assuming Kenton hasn't changed a thing even though Mauk is gone.

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:43:15 PM)
Hey Minnesota... of course Mangold was the center on your last question about the offensive line.

BuckeyeDave (Nov 26, 2003 1:43:25 PM)
Re Maurice Clarett. How can he possibly return to the Buckeyes, given that he was seen at the Tarver fight in Las Vegas in the high-priced seats. How can that NOT be a violation of NCAA regs?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:46:06 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...I've given up trying to figure out the methods of Reecie but I am one of the few who still believe that he has to try to get on the field at OSU one more year before he has a shot at big money in the NFL. He needs to prove himself before any team will take a chance on him. I hope his people will steer him the right way and if there is any possibility to come back...he needs to find that and stick to it. Until he's eliminated, I'm keeping him on the back burner.

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Nov 26, 2003 1:46:38 PM)
Besides Ray Williams, who from Ohio would you like to see Ohio State extend an offer to who hasn't received one yet?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:48:19 PM)
I guess Nick Smith is intriguing enough. He's a big body and he can play on either side of the ball. I would think we would bring him in on defense with the potential for him to transfer to the offensive side of the ball. He will be a late offer if he gets one.

Guest (Nov 26, 2003 1:48:38 PM)
Has anyone heard the true extent of Krenzel's injury?

mcorf (Nov 26, 2003 1:48:44 PM)
Gary, compare Haw and Pittman and who has the most upside?

Kirk (Nov 26, 2003 1:49:16 PM)
(FYI for folks sending in questions on out-of-state recruits... Gary doesn't focus on out-of-state but I can help maybe a little bit...)

ToledoBucknut (Nov 26, 2003 1:50:22 PM)
Leon Hart's comments from the front page article seem quite promising. With his knowledge of our OL depth chart, he'd be CRAZY to go anywhere else if early PT is that important. What are our chances, and if he comes, can he contribute next year?

Kirk (Nov 26, 2003 1:50:22 PM)
(If he comes, I think he steps in right away and is in the rotation. He's a very good prospect. It does seem promising, although he has said in the past that his family would like to see him stay close to home, plus he has also said he likes the south. I think the Buckeyes have definitely caught his attention though)

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:52:41 PM)
I do like Hart by the way and think he will be great to land but I'd take Mitchum first and foremost.

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:52:44 PM)
Haw has the most upside because of his size. I've been communicating a lot with Haw and I saw him at the Michigan game and I'm liking his attitude more and more. Just a tremendous young man and he has a ton of ability. Size and speed. I like Pittman as well but he needs to get bigger. He's a slasher with a meanness on the field and he has good speed to go the distance like Haw. I think Haw breaks a few more tackles than Pittman but both would be an upgrade on anything we've seen this season. Haw is a step below Reecie in my eyes and so is Ray Williams. Pittman is just behind them becuase of his injury this season.

mcorf (Nov 26, 2003 1:52:54 PM)
Gary, I was at the Fireplace for Ed Muransky's OSU-Michigan party Saturday and he stated that Bo told the players and coaches that it would be unnacceptable for them to lose. Also stated that they had absolutely no fear of our offense!

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:55:35 PM)
I already ruffled a few feathers with my post-game commentary "On the Lighter Side" but Michigan knew they were going to abuse OSU and they went out and did it on the field. Bo's statement had nil to do with the victory. And why should they fear our offense???

Bucci's boys (Nov 26, 2003 1:55:48 PM)
I was told that Fred Davis did not have a standout year, failed to make the Toledo Blade area squad, he did play RB, but a bigger problem I heard was his attitude, he skipped practices this season.

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 1:58:51 PM)
Coach Rios has always been pretty candid with me and he's not said a negative word to me about Davis. Obviously it wouldn't be a good thing if what you say is true, although it's hard to keep focus with the season Rogers had this year. Davis seems like a nice young man as far as I can tell.

mcorf (Nov 26, 2003 2:00:01 PM)
Ay chance we see Whitner at corner and Fox at safety next year?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 2:01:27 PM)
no whitner is a safety not a corner and although Fox might be a better safety...I don't think they will move him unless a younger player makes them move Fox.

Susan (Nov 26, 2003 2:01:39 PM)
Speaking of Clarett..Gary, did your comment about knowing something in December have anything to do with the fact that the qtr ends in Dec? I'm thinking, it's a grade thing and if he flunks out his scholarship will be revoked. Is this a possibility?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 2:04:21 PM)'s not a grade thing...if reecie isn't smart enough to stay eligible than he deserves to be ineligible. Like my last warning...if something goes'll konw it. That's all I can say now.

BuckeyeDave (Nov 26, 2003 2:05:00 PM)
After the michigan game, one of your columnists wrote that a drastic change was needed on the offense. I've said for several weeks that Bollman (OC/O-Line coach) should be replaced. What kind of dramatic changes on offense would you like to see and what do you think will actually happen? (The 3 & outs on the 1st possession and after Gamble's INT were inexcusable.)

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 2:09:15 PM)
Buckeye Dave...I'd like to see Bollman remain as a o-line coach but maybe jt promised him the o-coordinator job to join him at OSU when he came. I think Bollman should concentrate on the o-line and we should bring in an offensive coordinator who actually has a history of run and pass. Let JT give him the reins and try it that way. Like he does with defense...just designate power to an o-coordinator. No coach gets fired and we try to have a dynamic offense so we won't have the excuse... "we didn't have Clarett."

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Nov 26, 2003 2:05:10 PM)
Gary, Haw was at the Michigan game? Should we be worried?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 2:11:58 PM)
Minnesota...Haw was there as a diehard Ohio State fan taking in the atmosphere of the game so he won't be overwhelmed in two years when he goes back there. Haw is the absolute real deal. Great kid. I'm so excited about his future. If he's as good a player as he is a young man, then this kid has it all. He's a Buckeye thru and thru. No worry about Haw at all. He's the real deal. He will be recruiting players on the Dec. 5 weekend at OSU.

frog (Nov 26, 2003 2:05:17 PM)
are we going ater any DT and DE help?

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 2:17:06 PM)
Frog...sorry about your problems getting in on the chat...yea I think Smith could be one candidate on the defensive line but it's not a major priority if they are planning on moving D'Andrea to DE. I think there is enough depth if some of the youngsters like Penton and Richardson and Frost develop accordingly. Also Sian Cotton is there for the interior line as well. Reggie Smith is candidate at end as well. We seemed to be well stocked on the line. We will find out this spring.

BeaconBuck (Nov 26, 2003 2:13:57 PM)
Any chance that "Tressel Ball" leads to the nagging injuries at the end of the season? OSU had a lot and some like to point to that, but if your starters and two-deep never get a break it seems to me that it leads to the team being run down at the end of the season.

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 2:20:39 PM)
It didn't change much from last year...tressel ball that is. Injuries are a part of the game and so are ineligible players at the college level... I just don't think we did a good job in many areas this year as compared to last and injuries were a part of that yes. We had 11 weeks to find a running back to carry the mail and we never found one...without a top running back that can break tackles...tressel ball doesn't stand much of a chance in the long haul.

Kirk (Nov 26, 2003 2:21:58 PM)
Ok, everyone.... sorry to cut it short. If you have any remaining questions, please feel free to post them on the Ask the Insiders message board. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

GaryHousteau (Nov 26, 2003 2:22:55 PM)
Happy Thanksgiving everyone...make sure you tell the ones that you love....that you love them. Have a great weekend. Smile!
