Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 3:01:49 PM)
Hubbard- I'm sure that you have seen enough of Shaun Lane to know what kind of player he is. Do you see him as a RB or a DB in college?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:02:05 PM)
Hello everyone. I am here and can answer ??? whenever you're ready.

Hubbard (Dec 5, 2003 3:02:37 PM)
Db, he is jsut too small. It's a shame too, he has the tools for RB

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:03:06 PM)
I know the OSU coaches liked Lane a lot and offered him very quickly after signing day last year.

scribeohio (Dec 5, 2003 3:03:09 PM)
Hubbard, who? - just entered

Hubbard (Dec 5, 2003 3:03:14 PM)
Lane

Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 3:03:26 PM)
How much info can we expect to see over the next few days about updates for this weekends big recruiting effort?

Hubbard (Dec 5, 2003 3:03:45 PM)
I hope we hear some goos stuff from this weekend

Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 3:04:31 PM)
Hubbard- Is Lane physical enough despite his size (a la Winfield)

Hubbard (Dec 5, 2003 3:04:54 PM)
not as hard hitting as winfield, but he's nto afraid to come up and pop you

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:05:18 PM)
Mike68, we have plans to call no fewer than 20 kids. There may be that many at OSU alone. Some of them we won't call because they've already verbaled. We're going to be on top of it, trust me.

Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 3:06:04 PM)
Steve- aside from Ginn and Davis, which of the guys in town this weekend do you consider must have's

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:07:03 PM)
there are a lot of "like to haves" like Rhyan Anderson (How a guy with 47 sacks in 2 years isn't a top-100 kid is beyond me), Xavier Lee, Leon Hart and maybe one of the N.J. linemen Feliciano and/or Zuttah.

scribeohio (Dec 5, 2003 3:09:04 PM)
OL's pleeeeaaaase. We have 2 RB's coming in who are very good and now need some horses to block.

La_Buckeye_99 (Dec 5, 2003 3:09:24 PM)
I was reading an article last week on the Big House. It said that MU replaced the natural grass this summer with Field Turf. How many times have the Bucks played on surface? What impact do you think it had on the game? I personally think that our defenses timing of hits was off and many times created big plays for the MU offense. OSU should consider installing this Field Turf in one of there practice facilities if they have'nt already. I don't like to make excuses but I think it was a major factor in the loss. What are your thoughts?

Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 3:09:24 PM)
Just for the sake of, what if: Do you see us taking Hart, Claude, Feliciano, Zuttah, Mitchum and Bauta if all six want to come here. Or do we push one or two away?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:09:55 PM)
scribe, I agree. They have 3 good ones with Person, Skinner and Rehring in the fold. They need 2-3 more with one great one. That would be great.

Susan (Dec 5, 2003 3:10:03 PM)
wisky has field turf and I think Indiana did too..so LA_B that makes three times

jimmy (Dec 5, 2003 3:10:24 PM)
how is darius hiley progressing? will he be a star at osu?

Hubbard (Dec 5, 2003 3:10:25 PM)
susan are you sure abotu wisky, I thought they had the old artificial stuff

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:10:37 PM)
LA, OSU has it in the indoor facility. Illinois has it. Wisconsin has it. Indiana may have it too. No, that wasn't a factor in the game.

Susan (Dec 5, 2003 3:10:41 PM)
Yes Hubbard..they put it in this year

Hubbard (Dec 5, 2003 3:10:52 PM)
ahhh

Susan (Dec 5, 2003 3:10:59 PM)
Hubbard...I was on it..and got all those little black rubber bits stuck all over my shoes

Hubbard (Dec 5, 2003 3:11:08 PM)
haah that's cool

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:11:16 PM)
Mike68, no, they would not take 9 OL. It won't work out that way. They are casting a wide net and hoping to add 2-3 more to the 3 they already have.

Susan (Dec 5, 2003 3:11:27 PM)
yeah..it was...too bad we lost.

Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 3:11:46 PM)
Steve- Do you care to rank those six OL ?

Susan (Dec 5, 2003 3:12:08 PM)
Steve, anything more on the Dantonio rumors that were going around yesterday?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:12:14 PM)
jimmy, Hiley is doing well by redshirting this year. He should come back and help fill the void at receiver beginning in the spring, I would imagine. He could also be effective in the return game (can't be any worse than what we've seen).

jimmy (Dec 5, 2003 3:12:32 PM)
mitchum is headed to michigan in my opinion

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 3:12:57 PM)
Mitchum is headed to Columbus in my opinion

jimmy (Dec 5, 2003 3:13:12 PM)
i really want hart from SC

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:13:26 PM)
Mike68, ranking the 6 OL? Hart would be No. 1. Mitchum would also be up there as well. I can't differentiate between the other 4.

Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 3:13:32 PM)
Hart and Mitchum, any of the other OL would be gravy, IMO

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 3:13:42 PM)
I agree Mike

La_Buckeye_99 (Dec 5, 2003 3:13:43 PM)
How do you rate the prep player Louis Holmes, our chances of getting him and his ability to contribute right away?

jimmy (Dec 5, 2003 3:13:48 PM)
after reading about mitchums visit to UM, it does not sound good

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:14:20 PM)
Susan, no, I haven't heard if there is anything serious to rumors he could be looking around. He certainly deserves a chance (so does Conley, in my book). Cincinnati, going into Big East, would be a great opportunity for somebody.

bucknut13 (Dec 5, 2003 3:14:57 PM)
Why would anything written by tsun's site make you feel warm and fuzzy?

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 3:15:06 PM)
Mitchum liked his visit to Michigan, that doesn't neccesarily mean he's going there.

Susan (Dec 5, 2003 3:15:21 PM)
When would the bowl practices officially begin?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:15:39 PM)
La, sounds like Holmes would have been here last year if his academics were in order. Sounds like it is a formality. Heard good things about him as an athletic big man. Not sure how quickly he'd make an impact. We'll see.

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 3:15:41 PM)
They are practicing today according to 1460 The Fan

bucknut13 (Dec 5, 2003 3:16:09 PM)
They have been since Monday.

Susan (Dec 5, 2003 3:16:18 PM)
practicing or just working out? I thought there's a limited number of practices before the bowl game?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:16:36 PM)
Susan, they are practicing several days this week, then shutting down for exams, probably picking back up next Thursday or Friday for a week or so, then off until the trip down on the 23rd or 25th.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:17:16 PM)
You get 3 weeks of bowl preparation. They split it up. I don't know if yesterday or today was the "official start" of practice.

La_Buckeye_99 (Dec 5, 2003 3:20:19 PM)
Steve, give us your OSU bowl prediction if OU, USC win but LSU loses? I think GA is going to beat them given the home field advantage.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:22:51 PM)
La, I agree. I think I picked Georgia, I don't remember. I think OSU-Miami still in the Orange, Texas-Georgia in the Fiesta, Michigan-FSU in the Rose and Oklahoma-USC in Sugar. Maybe they flip Georgia and FSU. I guess you could make a case for Ga. and Miami in the Orange. Would draw well, certainly.

La_Buckeye_99 (Dec 5, 2003 3:26:48 PM)
Is it true the Eric Haw ran a 4.2 forty? Given that he had 3,000 yards this year, why hasn't he been rated higher by the recruiting services. He has size and speed, what about his quickness? Sounds like a 4-5 star recruit vs 3 star.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:28:40 PM)
Haw is 6-1, 209 pounds and was clocked 4.21 and 4.28 in the 40 at the OSU camp. Duane Long has moved Haw up to No. 4 in Ohio, behind Ginn, Davis and Person. I think you'll see Haw upgraded as time goes on. Only question is the competition he faced in the Cols. City League.

Susan (Dec 5, 2003 3:30:11 PM)
I noticed after the michigan game that the two OSU police officers that are usually with JT at home games were also up there. Did JT always take along his personal cops or is this something new since that stalker incident? It's just that I've never noticed it before.

La_Buckeye_99 (Dec 5, 2003 3:31:26 PM)
I noticed that T Ratcliff, the DB of Florida was named a 1st team All American from Columbus, OH? Why wasn't he a Buckeye?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:31:28 PM)
Susan, usually JT has two OSU police officers with him at every game, home and away. On the road, obviously, they are there more for security purposes than for law enforcement, which they would have those abilities at Ohio Stadium. I do not believe they were there for any other reason than the norm.

bucknut13 (Dec 5, 2003 3:33:58 PM)
Steve - BB question. Please refresh my memory, was the reason Lavender didn't come to us was because we didn't offer Foust? If so, why didn't we offer Foust? I sure would like to see how our offense would look with Lavender running the show.

Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 3:34:31 PM)
Susan- Bobby Bowden has used the same FL State Trooper for the last 15-20 years both home and away, so I'm guessing that this is the norm. I'm sure the coaches like it from a familiarity and comfort standpoint

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:34:36 PM)
La, good question. Keiwan Ratliff was the No. 15 player in the state in 1999 from Whitehall-Yearling. OSU took a huge class that year with 4 DBs (Doss, McNutt, Ziyier Walker and Curtis Crosby). Hindsight is 20-20, but only 1-1/2 of those guys panned out. Would have been great here.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:36:13 PM)
bucknut13, yes, it seems that Lavender and Foust wanted to be a package deal. I don't think it is as heavy handed as it sounds. OSU may not have had an extra scholarship for Foust when Lavender was ready to decide. It is too bad, obviously. But OSU's problems go much deeper than just point guard.

bucknut13 (Dec 5, 2003 3:37:43 PM)
Agreed, but Stockman seems more like a two guard to me IMHO. He seems to have been forced into that role due to lack of playing by our "true" PG.

La_Buckeye_99 (Dec 5, 2003 3:37:47 PM)
Of the 14 verbals for 2004 class, has any recruit not qualified academically?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:39:03 PM)
La, I do not know the answer to that question. I am not up on academics like I used to be quite as much. My initial answer is that most if not all of the verbals are on course to qualify. Maybe there are 1-2 who need to raise their score a touch. I will take this up and see what I can find out when I have some time.

madman (Dec 5, 2003 3:40:44 PM)
hello all! Steve I wish all this recruiting would be over! It is frustrating!

buckeyeronnie (Dec 5, 2003 3:40:56 PM)
Steve, I am a late arrival and this may have been covered. Will Ohio State get any commits this weekend. As well how do we fair with Lee/Reid, Mitchum, Claude, and are Davis and Ginn Jr. still "locks"?

madman (Dec 5, 2003 3:41:56 PM)
any word on Nick Smith. Is OSU still talking or is he pretty much out of the picture?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:42:12 PM)
madman, I know what you mean. They have 13-14 verbals. They will end up with 24-26. They have so many great players still out there. This is going to be a great class. Have some faith it will work out.

Susan (Dec 5, 2003 3:43:22 PM)
hey steve, dani just im'ed me saying that Louis told her he's allowed to play in the bowl game

madman (Dec 5, 2003 3:43:27 PM)
I like your optimism! Reading all the PR lately makes one think the sky is falling.

La_Buckeye_99 (Dec 5, 2003 3:43:31 PM)
Steve, Does Ted Ginn Jr. have the potential to be the next Charles Woodson out of Ohio?

buckeyeronnie (Dec 5, 2003 3:44:05 PM)
As well are besides Walker and Jones are there any JUCO top RB's Ohio State is looking at?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:44:46 PM)
buckeyeronnie, I can't tell you who it may be. There might be a verbal. Most of these kids are just starting their visits, so it is likely nobody will verbal. Would be great to get Lee or Reid (less likely with Okla. State). Mitchum and Claude are definitely strong options at OL. Claude not visiting as scheduled due to playoffs. Davis and Ginn still locks from what we know.

Scoots64 (Dec 5, 2003 3:44:46 PM)
hey boyz & girl

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:45:31 PM)
madman, Nick Smith sounds like a "keep warm" kid. If everything else falls through, maybe he ends up here.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:46:09 PM)
Susan, good for Louis, he handled his problems head on and I think Tressel respected that.

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 3:46:30 PM)
I can just hear the Cane fans now...

Scoots64 (Dec 5, 2003 3:46:31 PM)
Steve -- Do think Obie gets it turned around this year?

madman (Dec 5, 2003 3:47:12 PM)
We ran into him at the Pitt/Miami game. He is pretty sour towards OSU right now. I'm sure that if they offer he will swallow is pride and still accept!

Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 3:47:19 PM)
I would like to see us actually use LI in the bowl game

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:47:21 PM)
La, Ginn next Woodson? That's a tall order. But we have been hyping him as such. Woodson was a great one in high school and a great one in college, playing from day one at the University. That transition does not go as smoothly for everybody, so we shall see. Obviously, if Gamble goes pro, there will be an opening.

Susan (Dec 5, 2003 3:47:29 PM)
Yes, Dani says he's pretty happy knowing he'll be with the team for the holidays and the game.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:47:43 PM)
buckeyeronnie, not aware of any JUCO RBs OSU is tracking.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:48:48 PM)
Scoots64, yes, O'Brien will get it turned around. Are they going to still win 20? I don't know and, honestly, I doubt it. But at some point they will look like they did in that first exhibition, where they didn't seem to have a care in the world.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:49:10 PM)
madman, what does Smith expect? This is Ohio State. There are only so many spots. Who are his other offers?

Susan (Dec 5, 2003 3:49:22 PM)
68....I agree. Ironically, would be cool if we end up playing the Canes and Louis gets in and plays really well

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:49:45 PM)
Susan, yes, he can make his first catch against Miami, how ironic would that be?

Scoots64 (Dec 5, 2003 3:50:48 PM)
Steve -- you got any other notes about hoops, recruiitng or anything?

madman (Dec 5, 2003 3:50:50 PM)
I have no idea. I don't even think Pitt was an official visit but I oculd be wrong. We just noticed his name tag while at the concession stand and started chatting with him

La_Buckeye_99 (Dec 5, 2003 3:50:59 PM)
Steve. thanks for all the incites. I sending great vibes from LA to Columbus for this big recruiting weekend. Go Bucks.

buckeyeronnie (Dec 5, 2003 3:51:10 PM)
Do we end it with Haw and Pittman, and what I consider to be an equal Walker if he bites. If so, this is going to sound errogant explain to me how knowing that OSU will always feature the RB , why is there no more national interest?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:52:21 PM)
Scoots64, they need to take these next 3 games and get their heads right before they head to Seton Hall. Seven of the next 8 are at home, culminating in the Texas Tech game. Time for them to turn the page and get it together.

madman (Dec 5, 2003 3:53:22 PM)
Steve- What is the earliest we will know about possible coaching changes?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:55:05 PM)
buckeyeronnie, I have never understood why OSU has struggled to fill such glaring openings like this and OL in the past. But, yes, they obviously want one more great one. That's why they're fishing with Charlie Jones and Darius Walker.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:55:46 PM)
madman, I don't see Tressel making any changes on his end. Now if these guys leave for head jobs it could happen anytime between now and Christmas, I would bet.

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 3:56:04 PM)
Is Jones' visit still on?

buckeyeronnie (Dec 5, 2003 3:56:52 PM)
Jones now way and Walker maybe, I just do not get the impresssion that Walker is all that impressive? Am I wrong?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:57:27 PM)
As of earlier in the week it was, I don't call these guys every day to get an update. It wouldn't surprise me to see him cancel. Nobody visits until they go to the airport and get on the plane. Sometimes they just decide at the last minute they don't want to go or OSU cancels on them.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:58:04 PM)
walker not impressive? He's had 2 playoff games way over 100 yards. Sounds good to me.

madman (Dec 5, 2003 3:58:15 PM)
I hate for anyone to leave, especially the defensive coaches. I guess that is the price you pay for being good. I hope Tressel can find us some good ones!

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 3:58:26 PM)
I wasn't overly impressed with Walker's video but Duane likes him

Hubbard (Dec 5, 2003 3:58:41 PM)
me noether BCR

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 3:59:35 PM)
madman, well, we thought they would lose guys last year but they didn't. The prime candidates, to me, are Dantonio and Snyder. I think Conley would be a good to great head coach. He's a great organizer and PR man.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 4:00:25 PM)
BCR and Hubbard, I have no idea where Buford, Ga. Maybe near Atl. and we have no idea what competition he plays against, either. You have to factor that and his own line's play into the equation.

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 4:00:35 PM)
With Ringer next year and Wells the year after I'm not sure how badly we need another one to go with Pittman and Haw, but that's just me...

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 4:00:54 PM)
His level of competition on film does not look good

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 4:01:10 PM)
I trust the coaches

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 4:01:20 PM)
BCR, I think they need 3 this year and then just get those guys you talk about each of next 2 years and you're fine. Where was tape? On Internet?

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 4:01:32 PM)
Rivals

madman (Dec 5, 2003 4:02:03 PM)
Thanks Steve - I will be looking to hearing some news over the week-end - Everyone think good thoughts! I'm out!

Hubbard (Dec 5, 2003 4:02:28 PM)
Steve you should pass that alogn to insiders...I know alot of sites have video, but they aren't accessible under the recruits profile, they should be

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 4:02:52 PM)
Thanks for stopping by, madman. Any other last blasts.

Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 4:02:55 PM)
Buford is the equivlant of a d 3 school in Ohio. They have had a powerhouse program there for the last decade. PK Sam, who is currently a starting WR at FSU played there. His younger brother is at FSU as well. They play some good competition for their level, but the competition they play doesn't produce a lot of D1 recruits. Still though, Walker has been a known player here since his Soph year, so he must be pretty solid.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 4:03:46 PM)
Rivals has the jump on Insiders when it comes to video. I know Kirk has tried to upload some of the OSU people for our subscribers. I agree, video is where Internet is at. Insiders needs to embrace it in next year or so.

Hubbard (Dec 5, 2003 4:03:57 PM)
Yeah I think so as well

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 4:04:13 PM)
Bucknuts has a lot of good video but the Insiders has a whole isn't on par yet

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 4:04:26 PM)
If we do that, we'll have everything won't we (VBG)?

Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 4:04:33 PM)
Steve- Any chance of getting any of the current verbals on a chat before LOI day?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 4:05:03 PM)
Mike68, yes, we'll work on that. If you don't see it, keep reminding us.

Hubbard (Dec 5, 2003 4:05:09 PM)
no doubt

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 4:05:14 PM)
How about Duane?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 4:05:36 PM)
BCR, yes, we'll have Duane on Chat sometime soon.

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 4:05:40 PM)
I have one more question....is Schelgel the starting Mike next year?

Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 4:05:51 PM)
Yes, Duane's chats have always been good. Would love to see a combo chat w/ Duane and Gary

Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 4:06:47 PM)
Any word on if/when Ray Williams will be coming for an official visit?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 4:06:57 PM)
BCR, with D'Andrea going down again and questions whether he is ever going to be the man, I'd say there is a strong chance it is Schlegel. Can't discount Kerr, either.

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 4:07:09 PM)
Thanks Steve!

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 4:07:19 PM)
Mike68, we'll get Duane in. That would be good, too, to get Duane and Gary on the same one.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 4:07:36 PM)
Mike68, have not heard if or when Williams will visit OSU.

Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 4:07:40 PM)
I think they would provide a good point-counter point chat

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 4:07:46 PM)
I agree.

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 4:08:10 PM)
Well let's hope we get some verbals soon...Go Bucks!

Mike68 (Dec 5, 2003 4:08:33 PM)
Looking forward to all of the updates in the coming days. Thanks for all of the hard work you put into recruiting stories

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 4:08:43 PM)
Guys, I have got to get going. Got an appointment across town at 5. Thanks to everybody. Stop back to the site on Sunday for the bowl announcement, maybe the banquet stuff (if it indeed is Sunday) and more recruiting news than you'll ever see.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 5, 2003 4:08:53 PM)
See you later.

Hubbard (Dec 5, 2003 4:08:57 PM)
Thanks Steve

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 5, 2003 4:09:02 PM)
Thanks again

Susan (Dec 5, 2003 4:09:11 PM)
bye steve. thanks.
