Helwagen Chat: Dec. 19 Archive

Here are excerpts from Friday's special Free Chat session conducted by Bucknuts.com managing editor Steve Helwagen. The session lasted two hours and had as many as 200 OSU fans participating. Click this free link for a look at the questions and answers.

Here is the archive of Friday's special Chat session, which was opened up to all comers. Typically, Steve Helwagen and Gary Housteau conduct these Chat sessions each week for Bucknuts.com subscribers.

But as a special early holiday gift for OSU fans everywhere, Steve Helwagen conducted a free Chat on Friday. At one point in the two-hour session, we had as many as 125 OSU fanatics crammed into the Chat room. By the time it was over, more than 200 OSU fans had participated at some point in the Chat.

The first hour was moderated, meaning most of the questions and answers are connected on the transcript. The second hour was unmoderated, meaning it was basically a free for all. At that point, we still had 105 people online, so, as you may imagine it became pretty hectic at that point.

At the end, somebody named Rory Nicol came on board. We have no way to verify whether it was truly Rory or not. His presence brought a number of people calling themselves various OSU recruits. We have omitted that part of the transcript. Here are excerpts from Friday's Chat session:

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:00:48 PM)
Hey Ya! We will get started shortly.

Kirk (Dec 19, 2003 2:00:48 PM)
Hi Steve

Kirk (Dec 19, 2003 2:01:26 PM)
I'm going to turn the moderation on... all questions will come to me and we'll try to post as many as possible (also remember during the moderated portion, general discussion posts won't be included)

LloydBraun (Dec 19, 2003 2:01:28 PM)
is Holmes a Terry Glenn clone?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:02:53 PM)
Lloyd, I like Holmes a lot, Same kind of body (slight) but he shares Glenn's slipperiness and ability to make hard catches. Plus, he has that great open field speed of the great ones like Glenn and Galloway. He is similar. He'll need to do it for more than 4-5 games to be in the same league, obviously, but he's getting there.

wadc45 (Dec 19, 2003 2:03:00 PM)
Does Nicol get his first look at TE or DE?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:04:03 PM)
I think tight end. They have Hamby, Irizarry, Caldwell, White, maybe Hoobler and then Rory. With the chance Hoobler could play defense, Nicol may get his first look on offense.

Heater (Dec 19, 2003 2:04:09 PM)
Steve--I have noticed that some players get offered by EVERYONE. Others, like Izzy, get offered by Rutgers, Duke, etc...not exactly powerhouses. Are these players that slip through the cracks or are these players that are not "premier" D-1A players? Should we worry about getting a lot folks like that?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:06:12 PM)
Heater, I am a big believer in looking at which schools offer these prospects. I mean 10 or 20 or 100 sets of eyes are better than one. If, for instance, Miami or USC or Oklahoma is offering a kid, right now, along with OSU, that is the gold standard. But you can't use it as the sole determiner as to whether Bauta or anybody is a quality player or potential contributor. It is just one factor.

rd'sbucks (Dec 19, 2003 2:06:20 PM)
Word on Darius Walker?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:10:04 PM)
Well I talked to him after his game last weekend. He plays at 7:30 Sat. in state title game at Georgia Dome. Has visits set with Stanford, USC and Notre Dame in January. Since then, I saw a report where he replaced USC with Nebraska. He'd have to fit OSU in Jan. 30, maybe. Hope he waits that long to decide. He is a potential great one, I feel. And a good kid, too.

toledobuck (Dec 19, 2003 2:10:14 PM)
Steve, I read that coaches have been recruiting guys saying that OSU plans to open up its offense. Is this true and how important do you see that in landing guys like Fred Davis?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:11:45 PM)
Toledo, I think it is important for the staff to allay the fears of recruits like Davis. Promising recruits you are going to open the offense up and doing it are 2 different things. I'll have to see it first. I don't think they're going to go hog wild next year throwing the ball all over the lot with 2 untested sophs at QB. I just don't see it happening.

ttime (Dec 19, 2003 2:11:55 PM)
Steve, We had quite a few 4 and 5 star kids come through the past couple of weeks please share any updates? Xavier Lee do we really have a chance?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:13:37 PM)
ttime, any updates we have have been on the site. We aren't holding anything back. Yes, they have a shot at Lee, but they have to stay with him and work him. He's been here. Now it's time for Florida State, where he goes 1/9, and Auburn to also make their pitch. Overall, I think OSU is in good-to-great shape on Ginn, Davis, Mitchum, and Nick Patterson.

Kirk (Dec 19, 2003 2:15:07 PM)
News update -- The Miami Herald is reporting that OSU has received a commitment from RB Gartrell Shavers of Miami Springs HS. We're trying to follow up now.

Cincinnatibuck (Dec 19, 2003 2:15:24 PM)
Steve- With the ability of yourself or someone on the Bucknuts staff of watching football a hour or more each week, have you seen a punter other than Sanders that has the potential to get the job done next year.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:15:50 PM)
How about that? I know grades were an issue with Shavers. How does that happen?

Kirk (Dec 19, 2003 2:16:07 PM)
Hopefully Duane will find out :)

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:17:05 PM)
Cintibuck, I honestly don't have the first clue how Tressel intends to execute his most important play next season. Huston is an option, maybe Nugent or Pierce or perhaps A.J. Trapasso, which is making the rounds as a rumored fresh offer today.

LloydBraun (Dec 19, 2003 2:17:13 PM)
steve, is this what we are looking at for our current OL and the ones we hope to committ? Rehring- RT, Person- RG, Skinner- LT, Bauta- LG, Mitchum- C, looks like a solid line if we can get Bauta and Mitchum, I don't think Kyles future is on defense.

Guest (Dec 19, 2003 2:17:16 PM)
what is the scoop with Mitchum at this point?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:19:27 PM)
Yes, that's a great line and you haven't mentioned Zuttah, who also reportedly loves OSU, and potentially Carlos Feliciano. As for exact positions, that takes time to sort out.

JOEbagOdoughnuts (Dec 19, 2003 2:19:39 PM)
any chance seth gorney signs with osu now with the open schollie?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:20:41 PM)
interesting, I had not heard that he had even set up an OSU visit. Maybe we should call him (VBG)

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:20:57 PM)
JOEbagO, wow, that's a great question about Gorney. If I was OSU, I owe Alford no special courtesy, to speak of. I keep calling the kid and hope they can turn him around. They are definitely in need of a big. Dispatch had them looking at a couple guys in N.J. tonight. How convenient that they'll be there with the Seton Hall trip.

Guest (Dec 19, 2003 2:21:17 PM)
Steve....I thought Tovar would have made a nice replacement for Coach Snyder.....are there any leaders for LB coach at this point? Also.....is Snyder going to stay through the Fiesta Bowl or is he packing up already.

sharp_ii (Dec 19, 2003 2:21:28 PM)
how does osu stack up to setan hall?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:23:23 PM)
Well, not as well as they did before Sylvester's stupid elbow. You know in games they win he's usually good for 6-10 pts. They will miss that. OSU MUST defend the perimeter or this 5-10 kid Barrett will bury them. Couldn't get it done Wed. against Furman. OSU with depleted roster will need to slow the game down. They need Sullinger to assert himself and get 18-22. Stockman will need to be in the same range, too.

buckeyefan47 (Dec 19, 2003 2:23:34 PM)
steve, good to chat again. I would like to thank you for all the hard work that you and the other guys do for us bucknuts out there. What is your take on the columbus dispatch reporting MoC wants to come back? any truth are just getting us excited? Thanks again boss, Go Bucks!

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:24:43 PM)
47, I have been so busy I have not read the paper (I know, that sounds like Tressel saying he didn't read the Times article). I'd have to find that story and read it. That could just be posturing. Until he drops his suit against the NFL (or loses it), assume he'll be playing in that league next year.

bull (Dec 19, 2003 2:25:22 PM)
steve , do you think haw has a chance to unseat lydell as starting tailback?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:26:19 PM)
Let me add on Clarett, I would have no qualms whatsoever with his return. The kid has been to hell and back (admittedly, much by his own doing). Would be great, provided they have success. If the new line fails to block for him, watch out.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:27:12 PM)
bull, as for Haw, yes, he could give Lydell a real run. I spoke to a guy who follows this stuff real closely today. He likes Haw as being in the 210 range with speed and good-to-great instincts. Lydell has the experience. he just needs to stay healthy. He is thisclose to being a good RB at times. At least they will have options next year.

Tatum (Dec 19, 2003 2:27:42 PM)
Steve, I read where Rory Nicol said that he was told that Chad Hoobler is coming in as a linebacker. I saw Hoobler play a couple of times, do you think he has the foot speed to compete at LB at tOSU, or is he destined for a line position on either offense or defense?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:29:07 PM)
Tatum, my tape on Hoobler hasn't arrived yet, so I will reserve judgment. When I first looked at him, I thought he was Redgie Arden. There is some resemblance and Hoobler definitely has a I-A body. Now they need to figure out where he will be best served and best used. He is a great kid (a prototype Tressel recruit). He'll make a difference here, in my mind. Could be another Hartsock type.

sears3820 (Dec 19, 2003 2:29:13 PM)
Steve, where do you see some of the seniors taken in this year's NFL draft?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:32:45 PM)
I got booted

Kirk (Dec 19, 2003 2:33:11 PM)
Steve, the last question was from sears3820, asking "Where do you see some of the seniors taken in this year's NFL draft?"

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:35:10 PM)
I answered the NFL question once and got booted. Here goes again: Krenzel (late), McMullen (late or FA), Jenkins (late first or early 2nd), Step (first OL from OSU taken because of versatility, C or G), Clarke and Olivea (very late or FA), Smith (top 5 or 10, but he just fell a notch because the QB who didn't come here from Findlay just declared), Scott (late first if he tests well, 2nd or 3rd if not), Reynolds (very late or FA), Allen (3rd or 4th), Anderson (4th or 5th), Sander (late or FA). Gamble, if he comes out, late first or early second. Reecie, mid-first to mid-2nd

daytonbuck (Dec 19, 2003 2:35:24 PM)
Can Louis Irizarry play in the bowl game? Will he and Hamby be starting next year? Also, what about Clarett?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:37:39 PM)
dayton, Tressel said he has not decided if Irizarry will play. May depend on athletic dept. policy. He has missed 3 games I believe. When they open in 2 TE sets, yes, they would likely both be on the field. Not sure what you want to know about Clarett. It is my belief if he gets an affirmative ruling in court, he will be in the NFL. If not, signs are strong he will be back at OSU and starting at tailback (unless he screws up 10 more times, stay tuned).

rj (Dec 19, 2003 2:38:00 PM)
Steve - The Fiesta Bowl hype has been pretty quite. Infact, it's too quite! Is the team getting pumped for this game, or should we expect a lackluster effort because it's not the NC game.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:41:06 PM)
rj, great question. That is the $64,000 question. They had the whole world in their hands and let it slip away with a BAD showing at Michigan. So you have to wonder what their rationale is for playing this game. Then, everybody had them playing Miami, and I'm sure they would have gotten up for that. But this is a total set-up against the nation's hottest team (apologies to Michigan, LSU and USC). K-State will have the fan support, not so much OSU (although lots of West Coasters will be there). It is a sticky situation. Will need to play a great game to win, in my opinion. In fact, and I never do this as most of you know, I will probably pick K-State. Maybe that answers your question.

DOPE (Dec 19, 2003 2:41:29 PM)
Can you please update us regarding the mysterious Louis Holmes (DE) from Florida at Maine Prep School? Does he really exist?

Kirk (Dec 19, 2003 2:42:54 PM)
(While we have no photographic evidence of Holmes's existence, he is at least on the roster here: http://www.bridgtonacademy.org/athletics/footros.htm

Kirk (Dec 19, 2003 2:42:57 PM)
:)

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:43:58 PM)
DOPE, he allegedly exists. There was a big groundswell around this kid and all kinds of news about him when his visit was on the books for last weekend. Then he didn't visit and it's been operation shutdown in terms of news on Holmes. Duane has tried 100 times to find out from his coach in Maine what happened. We do not honestly know if OSU canceled or he didn't make it because of the weather (East Coast did get hit hard, if you watched the NFL games last weekend). I think, more likely, OSU has visits from some good-to-great prep DL in Jan. (Young, Harvey, Hall, Gholston, Barrow, Abdallah and Zellner), they probably just put Holmes on the back burner. That happens sometimes.

raven284 (Dec 19, 2003 2:44:19 PM)
Steve---Watching the season progress, it seemed as if Nugent wasn't kicking the ball quite as far as he used to, was I imagining this? Or was there a reason for the shorter kicks?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:45:20 PM)
raven284, I honestly did not notice that. I'm not sure if field position was a big issue or not. Michigan went 80 yards or more 3 times and 60 or more 5 times for TDs.

afh_98 (Dec 19, 2003 2:45:41 PM)
I know it's all guess work in a way (especially this far out), but how do you project the Bucks to finish next year, in both conference and BCS. I know anything can happen, and it's putting the cart before the horse, but...;-)

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:48:16 PM)
afh, good question, I think OSU is in the top three next year in the Big Ten with Michigan and maybe Iowa. I think Purdue, PSU, MSU, Wisconsin, NW (bowl really helps them) and maybe Minnesota will be in the middle group (all lose a lot, PSU keeps Mills and moves up into this group). Indiana and Illinois clearly bringing up the rear. BCS for OSU comes down to 3 games (at N.C. State, at Iowa and Michigan). At MSU and Purdue also no bargain.

ncinthenext3 (Dec 19, 2003 2:48:33 PM)
Hi Steve, Looking at some of the offensive line recruits, do you feel that the 'mold' that we are looking at is going away from the massive body to guys who can run? Maybe we can run some screens or sweeps?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:50:21 PM)
ncinthenext3, the old athletic OL and run the screens and sweeps argument rears its head for the 199th time on this site. Yes, I guess that is what they WANT to do. They inherited a Cooper I formation team with 320 pound linemen, so that limited what they could do. They had the nation's best I back in Clarett and won a national title with him. Didn't quite get as far this year. Yes, that seems to be the direction.

tbair28 (Dec 19, 2003 2:50:42 PM)
Where do you see Marcus Freeman plaing at tOSU? From sources close to his brother, I have heard that he may lose some weight and go to safety?!?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:52:39 PM)
tbair28, that is interesting, Wayne listed Freeman at 6-2, 235 this year. OSU has safeties (Salley, Mitchell, Everett and Whitner) and LBs (you know the list) out the ying yang. Maybe he is just looking for a way to get on the field. He doesn't want to take the Cie Grant route and play 6 positions before finally mastering one in his last year.

buckalum01 (Dec 19, 2003 2:52:55 PM)
Steve, how much of our O-line woes can be traced to Bohlman? Is there any chance we see some coaching moves after the bowl or NLOID?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:55:31 PM)
buckalum01, I don't know what to say. Bollman was hailed as a line coach when they won and this year, when they can't move the ball anywhere, he is taking the hit for the line play and for the offense, which he coordinates in name only. I like Coach Bollman. I think he is a pretty good people person. They are recruiting several good-to-great OL this year. Let's see how he does with his people in place, I guess. There may well be some staff changes, but I don't see Tressel sacking Jim Bollman, if that is what you are suggesting. If anybody leaves it will probably be of their own accord (i.e. Snyder or dantonio for "better" jobs)

brutusbuckeye27 (Dec 19, 2003 2:55:40 PM)
Steve what players have you heard of having good bowl practice performances?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 2:57:39 PM)
27, I got to watch one day of practice and young guys were wearing purple jerseys with K-State nos. as scout teamers, so there really isn't much I can say from what I've seen. Names I've heard as coming on include Zwick, Troy Smith (starring as Ell Roberson, one guy said "He may be even better than Roberson" ... wow), Doug Datish (glad to finally hear that), Joel Penton at DT and David Patterson at DE (I know, that seems to be a switch).

joey (Dec 19, 2003 2:58:04 PM)
Hi Steve, who do you see starting at the linebackers and safety spots next year?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:01:21 PM)
joey, wow, you don't ask easy ??? do you? That will all be sorted out in the spring. If I had to guess, Hawk will stay where he is at (WLB). Carpenter would likely be at the SLB. That leaves MLB to sort out between Schlegel, Kerr and D'Andrea. I would give Schlegel the edge on experience, especially since D'Andrea is hurt. At safety, Salley at FS (may move to strong, but they are almost interchangeable) and Whitner at SS. Mitchell and Everett would be the backups and play in nickel situations, if I had to guess.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:04:43 PM)
On the LBs and safeties question, two more dynamics: Again, they will play a lot of nickel, so all of the safeties will play. Not sure where that same dynamic leaves the glut of MLBs, who usually come out. But also expect those LBs to rotate through the various positions for rest, etc.

SmellyCat (Dec 19, 2003 3:01:30 PM)
What do we think the odds are of Clarett winning his suit with the NFL?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:02:51 PM)
SmellyCat, he got a good draw with the lady judge, who favors individual rights. But the NFL is standing on the premise that they can flout antitrust since the age restriction is part of its collective bargaining agreement with the players. Can a CBA work against a guy's right to work in that field? That's what she will apparently decide.

youngbuck (Dec 19, 2003 3:03:31 PM)
Steve - True or False... 1. The Bucks would be playing for the national championship if Maurice Clarett were still with the team, 2. Schlegel will start at linebacker next year, 3. Ginn and Davis select the Bucks.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:05:29 PM)
youngbuck, 1. True (they would not have lost to Wisconsin, certainly, and they may have done better at Michigan as well), 2. True, looks to me that Schlegel has the inside track on experience over Kerr and injury over D'Andrea. 3. True, Ginn and Davis select OSU (that ain't cut and dried, but looks good.)

Delly (Dec 19, 2003 3:05:57 PM)
Hi,can you tell us out of all these recruits and commits which ones would ones have a chance at seeing playing time next year and how big a factor it is? My guess would be Fred Davis for sure.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:08:19 PM)
Delly, Ginn if Gamble leaves would move right to the front of the list and compete with Underwood opposite Fox. Or they would move Fox to safety. Davis could draw in. Name OSU's receivers after Holmes and .... maybe Roy Hall. Keep thinking. OK Bam Childress. Anybody else leap to mind? Doubt any of the freshman OL start, but 1-2 could be in two-deep. Freeman could be a special teams player, certainly.

Kirk (Dec 19, 2003 3:08:25 PM)
After this question, we're going to turn off the moderation and go to an unmoderated chat. There are many questions that were sent in that we didn't get a chance to get to; if yours hasn't been post it, feel free to repost it for Steve once the moderation is off

go go (Dec 19, 2003 3:08:58 PM)
steve i have had a problem with the fact coach obrien after losing out on the center gorney that chose iowa he didnt persure aaron agnew whom all recriuiting indexs have rated high at center and and has big ten size with supposedly great moves around the basket. there r no quality big men coming out of ohio for at least the next two years and now bass is tranfering. agnew in the mean time signed with iowa state is there any chance of us maybe now getting in on him because our center situation looks bleak.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:11:26 PM)
go go, that's fine., that's your opinion on Agnew. Iowa State, to my knowledge, was his best offer. Maybe in O'Brien's mind, Agnew is even a bigger reach than Bass. I have never seen Agnew play, but I have seen him in person. yes, he''s big, but the names that leap out me on him are Oliver Miller or Tractor Traylor. Those kind of guys are limited, in my mind. I trust O'Brien to pick who he wants ... as long as there are no more Marinchicks, Basses or Jernigans (VBG).

t-val (Dec 19, 2003 3:11:30 PM)
hey steve, I am kind of nervous that Ted Ginn Jr. and Fred Davis havent commited yet. I dont get why everyone said they are a for sure thing. Whatd o you think?

(Moderation is now off)...

buckalum01 (Dec 19, 2003 3:11:54 PM)
what about D'andrea to DE? could it happen to free up room at the LB spots AND get the best players on the field?

afh_98 (Dec 19, 2003 3:12:01 PM)
T-val, me too, especially regarding USC

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:12:13 PM)
t-val, I think they end up at OSU. Call it a gut feeling. USC is great, but it is on the other end of the world.

Kirk (Dec 19, 2003 3:12:17 PM)
(Steve won't be able to get to every question, but he'll pick some and try to answer what he can)

As a note to The freshman who will play, Ginn will play next year, it's just a matter of where he wants to. His videos are amazing

If we do not open the offense up are we at risk of losing some great offensive recruits in the future

cheller1159 (Dec 19, 2003 3:13:14 PM)
I have seen Aaron Agnew play a number of times and he will not big a quality big man int he big ten

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:13:15 PM)
DiHard, sad to see Tovar go to Army. If he had waited 2-3 weeks he could have been full-time here. Great great great guy. Oh well, maybe he'll be back here another time.

Who do you see starting on the O-Line next year, Steve?

afh_98 (Dec 19, 2003 3:14:05 PM)

laker79 (Dec 19, 2003 3:14:06 PM)
steve - if for some reason the bucks can't get X. Lee or Reid, how does Szep look as a backup to Smith and Zwick?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:14:09 PM)
t-val, I like Brandon Smith. Has a Big Ten body. Good to great play maker at Euclid. Good competition there, too. Good grades, good kid, good pick up.

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 19, 2003 3:14:11 PM)

likwid82 (Dec 19, 2003 3:14:53 PM)
Hey Steve, your thoughts on Kerr and Schlegal and where they fit into the mix next season?

afh_98 (Dec 19, 2003 3:14:56 PM)
Why not bring in the WR recruits if for nothing else than to keep them from TSUN!

Cincinnatibuck (Dec 19, 2003 3:14:57 PM)
Glass City Buck and Toledo Buck - How's Fred Davis looking on the hardwood? Really wish he wouldn't be taken a chance for injury. Rogers looks like they could have a long season.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:15:04 PM)
Glass, OL next year, Mangold at C, Sims at LT, Kne at one guard, then rest between Barton, Schafer, Datish, Coleman and Downing.

t-val (Dec 19, 2003 3:15:19 PM)
do we still have a shot at Robert Ried and what are the odds that we get Xavier Lee?

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 19, 2003 3:15:31 PM)
No chance with Reid. Does Frost start at one of the DE spots next year?

DiHard (Dec 19, 2003 3:15:38 PM)
does anyone find it strange that shavers would commit to the bucks without visiting.....or did i miss his visit?

Hubbard (Dec 19, 2003 3:15:41 PM)
REid..no

laker79 (Dec 19, 2003 3:15:43 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:16:03 PM)
likwid, regarding LBs. I think Schlegel with an extra year and an extra spring here has the edge on Kerr. D'Andrea needs to get healthy and get back.

I hope we don't have a two-headed monster at QB next year - may the best man win, PERIOD!

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:16:54 PM)
t-val, I think Reid is a long shot (25 percent) or less to even visit, let alone sign. Lee probably 30 percent chance., seems to like Auburn.

ncinthenext3 (Dec 19, 2003 3:16:57 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:17:32 PM)
DiHard, yes strange that Shavers verbals without a visit. I think he has been offered, but it may be contingent on grades. Shavers is an RB.

buckalum01 (Dec 19, 2003 3:17:35 PM)
Steve, for what it's worth I was never raining praise on Coach Bollman. I agree that he has good people skills, but it seems like his lines always find a way to underachieve- even during the NC year. We just had the nation's best RB in the backfield. If we have similar problems with this position next year, would changes to the O-line (coaching and otherwise) be more likely than any this year?

DiHard (Dec 19, 2003 3:17:41 PM)

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 19, 2003 3:22:20 PM)
what's the bobby bowden award?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:22:27 PM)
cheller, they will not open the offense just so they can recruit. They'll open it if it gives them the best chance to win and, most importantly, the QBs show they won't throw costly game turning picks.

WOHBuckeye (Dec 19, 2003 3:22:36 PM)

Why do big recruits like Ginn and Davis wait so long to commit, when they are pretty sure of their choice? Knowing Ginn and Davis are in the class might draw in other big recruits, so wouldn't commiting early help the situation?

smitdog1 (Dec 19, 2003 3:24:33 PM)
Steve, if this year's Defensive Line was a 10, how do you see next year's line stacking up?

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:24:42 PM)
youngbuck, some names I would see them adding to this class: Davis, Mitchum, Bauta, Zuttah (maybe), Barrow, Ginn, Patterson and 2-3 others probably.

jblum (Dec 19, 2003 3:24:50 PM)

st.pete.bucki (Dec 19, 2003 3:25:24 PM)
buckeyes have a good thing going in fla. they need to keep hitting it hard down here.

buckeyeguy, Whitner would be an option at CB, certainly. They like him at safety as well, obviously.

osub4me (Dec 19, 2003 3:32:39 PM)
we need a solid running back with decisiveness, vision and explosion. tell me who fits

buckeye59 (Dec 19, 2003 3:32:40 PM)
Let's hope they are ready for action.

why wasn't osu ever in on Brock BoleN?

likwid, Ginn would be targets 1-5. Fills a glaring glaring need at CB, IMO

osub4me (Dec 19, 2003 3:33:34 PM)
he said no to fb1

BlueChipRecruit (Dec 19, 2003 3:33:49 PM)

Illinois has done well in dayton area. 2 trotwood kids as well.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:34:04 PM)
BABuckeye, punter could be Huston, Nugent, Pierce or new verbal Trapasso, I guess.

afh_98 (Dec 19, 2003 3:34:09 PM)
Wonder if our favorite lineman from NC State will be on the field next year?

smitdog1 (Dec 19, 2003 3:34:18 PM)
I'm sure it's been discussed, but how realistic is it that Ginn could redshirt next year in order to pursue the '04 Olympics?

osub4me (Dec 19, 2003 3:34:32 PM)
buckeye, both 2 star athletes i believe

DiHard (Dec 19, 2003 3:34:48 PM)
afh....i doubt it

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:34:49 PM)
DiHard, good theory, they've had so few, they've had to beat them up in practice.

smitdog....i think he said he wasn't going to redshirt either way

Glass City Buck (Dec 19, 2003 3:35:21 PM)

buckeye59 (Dec 19, 2003 3:35:25 PM)
2 stars but i doubt anyone would see them in person.

afh_98 (Dec 19, 2003 3:35:39 PM)
DiHard...I am only hoping so we can further embarrass him.

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:35:44 PM)
BlueChip, Gonzalez will be key on special teams, will get a look at WR as well, so will Hiley

Steve, so many athletes and we were so bad @ kickoff and punt returns. Who returns kicks this year? Why doesn't Bam?

I saw that Santonio was able to make some progress on his fumblitis towards the end of the year. It appears he might have learned his lesson.

buckeyeguy (Dec 19, 2003 3:37:54 PM)
If Zwick is half as good as advertised, the next 3 years will be very exciting. He will set records with the WR/TE's he will have surrounding him.

likwid82 (Dec 19, 2003 3:37:55 PM)
Holmes is in the clear, becomng the starting WR has gotten him over that problem IMO, the more touches he gets at WR the easier it will be for him to hang onto kick returns

SteveHelwagen (Dec 19, 2003 3:37:59 PM)
laker79, they had Bolen in camp, I believe. They ended up with a good FB in Dionte Johnson who wants to be a FB. Bolen wanted the ball.

smitdog1 (Dec 19, 2003 3:45:32 PM)
osub4me: that's not for a lack of athleticism on Gamble's part....a good coach will get a hold of him and make sure he's disciplined not to bite on those moves. That can be coached. Gamble's ability and potential can't.
