Recruiting Update - Dumaka Atkins

Sarasota, FL Booker OL/DL Dumaka Atkins will have a busy month. He still has not taken an official visit and has four scheduled so far and plans to schedule a fifth. OSU is on that list of visitors.

Sarasota Booker OL/DL Dumaka Atkins did not take his scheduled visit to USC this past weekend.

"I didn't take it. I switched it; haven't decided when though. It will probably be a middle-of-the-week one," Atkins said.

The 6-foot-4, 270-pound lineman has narrowed his choices to: Ohio State, Florida State, LSU, Michigan and USC. He says he does not have a favorite.

Ohio State's Jim Tressel has not used up his in-house visit with Atkins.

"Not yet," Atkins said. "They're supposed to be calling me (Monday night) to set one up."

Defensive line coach Jim Heacock is recruiting Atkins for OSU.

"I like him. He seems like a good guy and a good coach," Atkins said.

Atkins says he has no preference between offense and defense.

"Schools are recruiting me both as a defensive tackle and offensive guard. I really don't care where I play, I just like playing," he said.

Atkins will visit Michigan this coming weekend.

He also has visits scheduled with: Ohio State (Jan. 23-25), LSU (Jan. 27-28) and Florida State (Jan. 30-Feb. 1).

Here are some more comments from Atkins:

Is OSU recruiting you as a DT, or OG?

"Well, Coach Heacock likes me on the defensive line and the offensive coaches like me on the offensive line."

Have you talked with offensive line coach Jim Bollman very much?

If you were to put a percentage on it, what are the chances that you will sign with OSU?

"I would say… 25 percent."

What are the strengths and weaknesses of your game?

"My strength is that I'm pretty agile for my size. My weakness? You always have to get stronger and faster and learn more about the game."

What are some of the things you like about OSU?

"They have a good history of getting players to the pros. Solid program; good players; good coaches."

Is winning in college as important to you as getting to the NFL?

"Yes. I want a school that can win a national championship. I want one of those."

Your brother Baraka plays DE for Miami. I take it you were rooting against the Buckeyes in the Fiesta Bowl last year?

"No, I was just rooting for my brother. Miami… I didn't really care if Miami won or not."

You are not considering Miami. Is that because you wanted to do something different that your brother?

"Yeah, pretty much. I wanted to do my own thing."

Are you going to wait until signing day to decide?

"Unless I go on a visit and it's spectacular. Then I might commit right then and there."

Did you watch many Ohio State games this year?

"Yes I did. I watched them a lot. I watched about four games this year."

What comes to mind when you think "Ohio State"?

"Ohio State, I think they're a great defense, with a struggling offense."

Is getting playing time as a freshman a factor in your decision?

"Yes it is."

Where do you think you would have the best chance at immediate playing time?

"I'm not sure. I think it would be about equal. They all are losing some guys, but they all have some guys back."

Have any other head coaches – like Pete Carroll, Lloyd Carr, Bobby Bowden, or Nick Saban – had an in-house visit with you?

Do you have any set up?

"Michigan and FSU are supposed to come through here this week."
