Good afternoon...it's snowing and cold in Y-town this morning...let's heat things up!
Kirk (Jan 15, 2004 1:03:57 PM)
Feel free everyone to send your questions in for Gary. As mentioned, we have a big crowd today and might not be able to get in every question. Fire away!
riverwatchbucknut (Jan 15, 2004 1:04:12 PM)
I have a question on Morelli. I've been hearing talk of his opening of his commitment and OSU is the other school he is looking at. Gary what have you heard?
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 1:07:17 PM)
Hi riverwatchbucknut...I've heard about as much as you have at this moment about Morelli. The whole Bryant, Johnson Morrelli thing is really becoming interesting at this point. Bryant and Johnson are in this weekend and it would be great to pick up another top keystoner if all three decided to come aboard. I wouldn't get too excited about Morelli although Palko will likely be the QB at Pitt for the next three years! You never know.
may may (Jan 15, 2004 1:07:24 PM)
gary it was said on bsb that u thought ferguson was the most overated player in ohio history is that true if so why?
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 1:12:10 PM)
Hi may may...if you're talking about Delbert Ferguson then yes I do and did rate him very high going into this season and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I've watched Delbert do tremendous things in person for three years on the gridiron and I saw no reason for him not to continue doing that and more his senior year. Delbert was where I thought he would be when he got hurt and was out for the year. He learned how to block this season which he never would have done at Ursuline. He's a big back that can make plays and he's very intelligent. I think he will resurface prominently somewhere, but as of now I'm not sure with the change at Nebraska...he thought he would be heading there. So they can say what they want to say about me over there...it goes with the territory I guess.
Susan (Jan 15, 2004 1:12:54 PM)
Gary, Have you been able to speak with Coach Rios personally in the last few days? If so, is there anything you can tell us about the conversation that you haven't posted? hint hint....reassurance?
buckeyefan47 (Jan 15, 2004 1:13:03 PM)
Gary I need to know about some rumors floating around that you are a silent verbal to USC, is there any truth to this?
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 1:18:57 PM)
Hi Susan...yes I've had communication with Rios on a few occasions this week and there have been one or two comments he made that make me still feel positive about Fred. But when you read Fred making comments to other websites that are discouraging...I don't know what to believe any more. I haven't talked to Fred in a while so I don't know what he is feeling from that aspect. I'm just tired of the whole thing already. If he doesn't want to be a Buckeye at this juncture...then let him be. Sure I will love to have him at OSU but if he doesn't want to represent Dru and his school and his state at Ohio State then so be it. His friends Marcus and Ted don't even know what direction he's going to go in. So obviously he's not the same Fred that I first met back in May who was gung ho about wearing number 6 and playing for the Buckeyes. He's a tremendous talent and a super nice kid and I'd love for him to stay home...but I'm content to wait until signing day and find out then if I have to. God bless him whate
Buck87 (Jan 15, 2004 1:19:37 PM)
What is your feeling on Bryant and Johnson? Are they a package deal, or could we get one without the other? Would we take Johnson and not Bryant or is it Bryant; Bryant & Johnson; or neither?
BuckNutty (Jan 15, 2004 1:19:42 PM)
How likely do you think it is that Ohio State lands Bryant, Lyons, and Johnson?
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 1:24:58 PM)
About Bryant and Johnson...James seemed more than adament about him and Johnson being a package deal and he was pretty convincing that at least he was really interested in Ohio State. That's all that I can really tell you. When I add to that that a couple of players in the all-star game think Bryant really likes OSU...one can only surmise that he is indeed very interested in the Buckeyes and Johnson could be coming with him. Bryant talked about Johnson is even willing to change positions without me even asking him about Johnson so obviously things must have been discussed about that already. My gut says that Lyons ends up at Michigan because of Mundy and Breaston...and my gut says that Morelli stays at Pitt. I have not talked to Johnson, Lyons or Morelli at all. I think Bryant ends up at OSU and if that means taking Johnson too then make room for him JT. Bryant is an enormous talent.
dcbuck (Jan 15, 2004 1:25:10 PM)
Gary, does James Bryant seem open to the idea of going down to DE, he seems to have the body for it, but his comments seem like he's set on LB, also Gary you do a great job and don't let the suckas on msg board bring you down
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 1:28:13 PM)
Hi dcbuck and thanks for your kind words...I think Bryant is a natural linebacker and I'd stick him right in the middle but there might not any room at that position. He's like Carpenter, just get him on the team and he'll find a place to play because he's so talented. He's an SOB on the field just like Carpenter.
LoganBuck (Jan 15, 2004 1:28:21 PM)
Gary what do you make of the RB situation with several guys hanging around out there and Clarrett maybe coming back?
Chief (Jan 15, 2004 1:28:24 PM)
What are your feelings about MoC returning for 2004? Got a feeling either way?
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 1:33:21 PM)
About Clarett...I can actually see Clarett going either way...to the NFL or coming back. I think however...as I've said all along...that he knows he needs another year at OSU to be able to earn some big money in the NFL. I think he pursued the NFL route all along as a fallback in case he's not eligible to come back to OSU for whatever reason. I know a lot of stuff about Reecie off the record and I've alluded to it many times, but it seems like all the minefields have been cleared away and the stage is now set for him to come back to OSU. I think JT will take him back whether he really wants him on the team or not. And if Reecie can shut his mouth and ball for one more year, he can actually make the people of C-bus proud of him..he can make a lot of money...and maybe win a Heisman before departing. So it makes sense for him to come back one more year if all parties can make it work.
hondo (Jan 15, 2004 1:33:56 PM)
Hi Gary -any new info on Mitchum or Hart?
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 1:36:47 PM)
Hi Hondo...Nothing new but on a scale of one to four winks...I give Mitchum four winks and Hart three winks. I feel almost sure about Mitchum...and I really get some good vibes about Hart although I admit we can easily lose him before signing day.
jd (Jan 15, 2004 1:37:30 PM)
What are Gary's predictions for the remainder of the class ? We won't hang him if they don't come true : )
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 1:41:41 PM)
Hi Jd...This is my wish list...give me Mitchum...Hart...Bryant...Johnson (because I believe Bryant)... Anderson...either Estovan-LB from Florida or Zellner and Davis.
Susan (Jan 15, 2004 1:42:02 PM)
Gary, are you planning to attend Mitchum's pc? What happens if it's the same day as some guy is Toledo's? (Kirk..that is not a Davis question so it doesn't count)
SteveHelwagen (Jan 15, 2004 1:42:08 PM)
Hey Gary, too bad you didn't get to go to Toledo today. Oh well, there will be other days (VBG)
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 1:45:46 PM)
I'd love to go to Mitchum's if he indeed has anything. He's closer than Toledo. I don't know if I'll be in Toledo or not...I'm starting to buy into the feeling that he's not coming to OSU. The snow up here is brutal today so I am glad that it wasn't today at least.
seedubya (Jan 15, 2004 1:45:58 PM)
Hi Gary! Is Williams going the Prep route and is he promised a schollie next year?
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 1:50:09 PM)
Hi cw the stranger that you are...I know it's hard to leave your comfort zone over there...lol... but anyway I feel pretty confident from what I've been told that Williams will go the prep school route and will end up at Ohio State if he takes care of business. I don't know for sure that he's promised a schollie but I think there is an understanding there and Williams has people helping him in that effort. So he can visit anywhere he wants but he's not going to be eligible this season is what I've been told. I do think the people at Benedictine have done Williams a disservice by hushing everything up. They've made a bad situation worse by not being forthcoming about Williams academic status.
scUM Hater (Jan 15, 2004 1:50:37 PM)
Feelings on Jarrett? Love his size.
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 1:54:30 PM)
if davis spurns us...give us Jarrett...we need another receiver...I just hate to Jarrett on the line while we have to wait on Davis. Enough already Fred...give Ohio State a commitment and put this fiasco behind you. You belong at Ohio State period! Forget about the stardom and whatever BS they're selling you. Home is where you belong with people who really want you here! (Deep breath!) But yes I'd love Jarrett and his size. I really love Davis' size though. I expect to lose Manningham next year but not Davis this year. And that's where we are headed. Oh well...
edbuck51 (Jan 15, 2004 1:55:10 PM)
Are the Bucks accepting verbals first come, first served, or are they saving spots for certain priorities?
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 1:57:20 PM)
I think there are certain guys left that have spots like Mitchum...Hart...Bryant...and Davis. The rest will fill out the class. I might even bet that Anderson has a spot reserved. Just a guess though.
jd (Jan 15, 2004 1:57:34 PM)
At this point in recruiting, does the coaching staff have a really good feel as to who they will get or is it almost like roulette with these kids ? We seem to be in on an awful lot of prospects with only a few spots to fill. Thus, you get the impression that there is not a lot of confidence that they know who is going to eventually commit.
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 2:02:07 PM)
Hi jd... at this point...i think the coaches have an idea who they will get but there are a few that will be unknown to them and they will have to save a spot for. Hart being one in particular. But most of these guys say they will announce before signing day so that helps so we don't have a Crable situation like last year. Crable wasted two scholarships from Ohio State and Pitt last year but I'm sure the staff plans for such actions. I believe Bryant will be the Monday before signing day although there have been reports it would be on signing day. But I think they will give Rios and Davis an ultimatum on a certain day and then move on. But Conley I'm sure has a really good idea who they're going to get and not get.
may may (Jan 15, 2004 2:02:39 PM)
campbell grad here! gary besides manningham any other big time recruits out of our youngstown area
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 2:07:09 PM)
hi may may...Shawn Patton was a great high school running back at Campbell...I really like Derrick Stewart out of Ursuline next year. Ursuline just hired an assistant of of Warren Harding's staff, Dan Reardon, who is a big time OSU guy...so the pipeline from Ursuline to OSU is secure. The Irish have a couple of tremendous players who will be juniors next year. Stewart is a great talent who will probably be moved to QB...he was Darryl Clark's top target at wideout and he is a tremendous defensive back as well. Shaun Lane's brother Ben is a big talent although he may be undersized at linebacker. That's two quick names. And the lineman at Harding Rocco Cironi will be a player. He loves OSU.
Kirk (Jan 15, 2004 2:07:40 PM)
Ok, we're going to do the second and final round of Fred Davis questions:
Rbuck (Jan 15, 2004 2:08:02 PM)
Gary, Sorry I joined late. Have you addressed Fred yet?
Buckj (Jan 15, 2004 2:08:22 PM)
Are we losing Fred? Gary?....
Jay Buck (Jan 15, 2004 2:08:56 PM)
when is the announcement set for
Jay Buck (Jan 15, 2004 2:08:59 PM)
is it tuesday the 20th or is it waivering
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 2:09:04 PM)
Hi Rbuck...I've vented about Davis already ...yes....
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 2:09:43 PM)
Hi Buckj...im not happy with the Davis situation to say the least. I hope common sense prevails in the end and we don't lose him...but I'm bracing for the disappointment.
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 2:12:36 PM)
Hi Jay Buck... I think the date is still unknown at this point because the decision is unknown. I really think at this time that Davis wants to go to USC or wherever and doesn't want to disappoint everyone and doesn't know how to do it or announce it. That's my feeling right now. I think he's decided already that he thinks the grass is greener for him somewhere other than Ohio State...unfortunately. He's worried about number of receptions than the reception he'd get from OSU fans if he were to become a Buckeye.
BirmBuckeye (Jan 15, 2004 2:13:38 PM)
Gary, greetings from Arizona. As a supplanted Toledoan, I am sorry you didn't get to make the snowy trip today either. My question is this: Who do you think will be the bigger surprise; SirJo Welch, Brandon Underwood or Shaun Lane? Also, do you remember my uncle, Jeff Upton from Adrian College? Thanks in advance.
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 2:18:24 PM)
Hi BrimBuckeye...Yes I remember Jeff and he still is a hanger-oner over at the other website I believe...tell him to get his butt over here...lol... I think all three redshirt first of all but I think there is a tremendous upside as far as expections for Brandon Underwood...nobody seems to be expecting much from him but I think he can be a really good one down the road and I'm hoping that the brothers Underwood will have a chance to pair up at the corners even if it's just for a series or more obviously in the future, if it's possible. I really like Shaun Lane because I've seen work his magic... he's Ginnlike with the football in his hands...well maybe not quite...smile!
edbuck51 (Jan 15, 2004 2:18:35 PM)
Do you know why Manningham seems to be a Michigan guy all the way? Are the Bucks even going to work on him, or do you think it is no chance?
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 2:24:03 PM)
Hi edbuck...I just think that when you combine the fact that Michigan has an offensive more conducive to being a big-time playmaker as a receiver with the small but very pro-oriented Michigan people around the Harding program who will be in his ear continuously...it's almost a no-brainer that he will wear number one there after Braylon Edwards leaves next year. Again...I'm not writing him off at OSU and I'm sure JT isn't either in any way...OSU was his first offer and Manningham's grandfather loves JT and OSU so that will be important. But I just feel the odds to land him over Michigan ...early on anyway... will be overwhelming. He is going into this with an open mind however. I still have great connections on the Harding staff so I'll keep my ears open.
seedubya (Jan 15, 2004 2:25:09 PM)
Gary: What is Jamario O'Neil doing these days? Is he still with Ginn Sr? or was that just for football. Where will he play next year? Thanks
GaryHousteau (Jan 15, 2004 2:29:44 PM)
CW...you missed my column last week...On the Lighter Side... it was about Ginn Sr. and I mentioned Jamario obviously... You miss a lot from being over on that other site...lol...anyway... Jamario is living with the Ginn's and they consider him to be another of their children. I think Jamario will play where they need him to play...my early projections for next year have him at QB and Safety. Ginn Sr. and Duane both have him as a corner at the next level and that's fine...He'd be a great big corner if that's the case. I see him as a safety in college because he can do so many things and I'd love to have his speed and his hitting ability to roam the field freely. He's really good and he will be a tremendous addition to their track program...as if they needed him...
Kirk (Jan 15, 2004 2:30:07 PM)
Ok, we'll have to let Gary go now. Sorry everyone for not getting all the questions in today... I'll stick around for a few to answer any general recruiting questions (except on Fred D since I have nothing new to add) if you wanted to ask them and didn't get them in. Thanks Gary for stopping by!
