Coach: Welch Still Plans To Sign With OSU

For more than a week, rumors have been swirling that Columbus Beechcroft defensive back Sirjo Welch may not sign with Ohio State on signing day. But his coach, Tom Dunlap, told Bucknuts.com this afternoon that Welch is on target to sign with the Buckeyes next week. Click here for more details.

For the past week or so, rumors have been flying that Columbus Beechcroft safety prospect Sirjo Welch would not sign with Ohio State next week on national signing day.

At least two sources told Bucknuts.com staff members that Welch's status was similar to that of Austintown Fitch wide receiver Miles Williams, who had his OSU scholarship offer pulled due to academic concerns.

But Beechcroft coach Tom Dunlap told Bucknuts.com today that Welch is still planning on signing with Ohio State next Wednesday.

"I stopped paying attention to all the rumors that float around," Dunlap said. "There is nothing to this one. We are having a press conference at the school next Wednesday and Sirjo will be signing with Ohio State."

According to Dunlap, Welch is qualified academically.

"He has a 2.6 GPA," the coach said. "I don't know how he is not going to qualify. He is the only player we have this year so there is no reason to have the press conference if he is not signing."

With verbals in the last day or so by Louisiana DT Nader Abdallah, Florida WR Albert Dukes (we are still working on contacting Dukes or his coach) and Florida RB-DB Dennis Kennedy, OSU now has 23 verbal commitments in a class that could reach as high as 26 players.
