Less than a week until Signing Day...what else is there to talk about? Hi everyone...Go Bucks!
SpielmanForPres (Jan 29, 2004 1:03:09 PM)
Gary, either you or Duane suggested we may still be in for Jarrett, Lyons, and Anderson. How realistic a chance?
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 1:07:02 PM)
Hi Spielman...I was very high on Jarrett after his visit to OSU, I know some specific things that happened on the visit that made me feel that way. But Jarrett hasn't taken my calls since right after his visit now so I no longer have any first hand information from him to go on, which is not good obviously. It doesn't look good for Jarrett but I'm still trying to get a solid read on him. I like our chances for Lyons a lot, in fact I'll be going to his presser on Monday night. And I've been high on Anderson since his visit to OSU because of some of things that I was told after that. But if we bat 1 for 3 here than I'll be happy. Anything more would be great.
SmellyCat (Jan 29, 2004 1:07:26 PM)
Gary-Who do we close the class with realistically?
Kirk (Jan 29, 2004 1:12:16 PM)
Gary, last question was from SmellyCat - "Who do we close the class with realistically?"
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 1:13:37 PM)
Hi SmellyCat...I'm one of the few, if only, who think we close with Bryant on Signing Day. He's been so candid talking to me that I'm led to this conclusion. If we can close with Lyons on Monday and Bryant on Wed. that would be great.
Kirk (Jan 29, 2004 1:13:44 PM)
Ok, next topic will be James Bryant... let me get the questions on him....
JoNasty (Jan 29, 2004 1:14:17 PM)
Gary I know bryant has been playing his announcement very tight, but did mention a rivalry with henne and the bond with the ginn family as positives for tOSU do we know anything about who his leader is?
hondo (Jan 29, 2004 1:14:27 PM)
Gary - What's your thoughts on Bryant? I read a article on BSB about him yesterday and didn't sound too good for the Buckeyes.
ygtbuckeye (Jan 29, 2004 1:15:25 PM)
Bryant said that he thinks he could start at osu; what do you think?
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 1:18:52 PM)
Hi JoNasty and hondo...like I said I'm out there on an island with Bryant. I only go by the information that I'm told and I try to be just as honest with you all that I can be. I have cassette tapes with nothing but positive and even unsolicited stuff that Bryant has said about OSU. I didn't know of his relationship with Chad Henne and he would like to continue that in college...Bryant volunteered that to me. He's also said he has a leader in his own mind and he could be playing me like a fiddle. I admit it. But all that I can do is provide first hand information and try to interpret it. I'm not connected into the recruiting offices of Ohio State sorry. Most people who read me know I attempt to give solid information and sometimes that is not enough. We will see here with Bryant. I like our chances...but what do I really know?
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 1:20:36 PM)
Hi ygtbuckeye...I like Bryant's bravado but I don't know how realistic his chances of starting are right away. Marco Cooper spoke the same way when he was being recruited. That doesn't mean Bryant will be like Cooper but it's all unknown at this point. I like our LB depth period. With or without Bryant.
Kirk (Jan 29, 2004 1:19:34 PM)
Ok, next topic is the Buckeyes' newest commitment. None of us has seen him play, but Gary will give the questions a shot...
Buckeyefreak (Jan 29, 2004 1:19:41 PM)
Gary, what is your take on Dennis Kennedy?
bucks101 (Jan 29, 2004 1:19:47 PM)
is kennedy coming in at RB or DB?
ToledoBucknutty (Jan 29, 2004 1:19:52 PM)
Kennedy sounds too much in the mold of Haw and Pittman. Don't we need another bruising, big back?
Debord (Jan 29, 2004 1:19:55 PM)
Gary - does the offer to Kennedy signal the end of recruits for OSU. I think we get Anderson and that is it. Thoughts?
tsteele316 (Jan 29, 2004 1:20:09 PM)
does the recent commitment of kennedy mean that osu is out of the running for johnson?
OzBuck (Jan 29, 2004 1:20:51 PM)
Hey there Gary, thanks for all your hard work and excellent updates! There's been a lot of conjecture on the boards as to whether we should offer Dennis Kennedy or back that scholie. I know Helpinghand really vouches for him. With him now a Buck, do you think it was a wise chance to take? He seems to have a lot of upside.
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 1:24:14 PM)
About Kennedy and Johnson...I believe JT has his ducks lined up all in a row...he always does. I don't know why he would have visited Johnson so late unless he really wanted him in this class. But then Kennedy comes along who could be another bruiser at running back where Johnson is a speedy guy who could play defense at OSU. The number of ships are getting smaller so there's not a lot of wiggle room for even the master of wiggle to work with. Don't be surprised if Johnson and Bryant are indeed on board next week... but that is pure speculation on my part. I'll call both before Wednesday to try and nail it down as best as I can. I really don't know much about Kennedy yet.
cantonbuck (Jan 29, 2004 1:25:40 PM)
gary, BSB says that Sirjo Welch is still committed to the bucks and vice versa, anything you can tell us other then that?
Susan (Jan 29, 2004 1:26:10 PM)
Is Sirjo good to go? Were those rumors just that? Rumors?
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 1:29:01 PM)
Hi cantonbuck...No I'll take that at face value right now. I established a relationship with Sirjo last summer and have continued it on somewhat, so when I have the time...I will speak with him myself just I can feel comfortable that he won't be on the outside come signing day. I haven't recovered yet from the Williams fiasco, which at best is horrible timing on JT's part..but then again...he does nothing without knowing all ramifications fully! Always remember that!
xhscoach (Jan 29, 2004 1:29:34 PM)
Gary, do you see anyone flying under the radar that we might be after
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 1:32:30 PM)
Hi xhscoach, not really but always remember that JT had great relationships with high school coaches in South Florida when he was at YSU, he always mined South Florida well as the boss of the Penguins. Combine that with Coach Conley's prowess in South Florida and there could always be a hidden gem that we don't know about beneath the radar. Dukes is a great pickup but he wasn't necessarily flying below the radar.
Nutz4Bucks (Jan 29, 2004 1:33:14 PM)
Gary, I am concerned with the "perceptions" these recruits are having about OSU. If we are such a run-oriented offense, and it's widely known that MoC may not be coming back, why was it so hard to go get some real blue-chip recruits? No offense to Pittman, Haw or now Kennedy...but I don't see them making an impact much more than Ross or Hall. Please tell me I'm mistaken and in for a big surprise.
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 1:38:10 PM)
Hi nutz4bucks... I like Haw...I really do. I like Pittman. I think Haw can come close to what Reecie does and may even have more pure speed than Reecie. But Reecie is Reecie. It's a shame that he has to still linger over this program but JT has no real options with him at this point. We are indeed a run-oriented offense but our biggest concerns going into next year are the youth on the O-line and the unknown situation at running back. I can't figure it out. The only thing I do know is that JT only coaches one way and that for the most part will not change. Look at the SuperBowl!
hondo (Jan 29, 2004 1:38:26 PM)
Gary - what was your reaction to Davis going to USC?
redondo (Jan 29, 2004 1:38:59 PM)
Gary - what do you think JT's thoughts are regarding Fred Davis? Does he think it's just one of those things, or there's something to be learned, or what? Thank you.
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 1:43:39 PM)
Hi hondo...very disappointed with Fred in the way he went about doing it. I don't begrudge him in any way for wanting to go to USC but he could have been a lot classier about the whole process. He left a good man hanging in the wind...Coach Rios... and that wasn't right. Sure Rios is a Buckeye guy and maybe Fred felt he was swimming up stream with Rios but to diss him in such a manner was uncalled for. Rios is a great guy and Fred could have handled everything in a better fashion. At one point I had said that Ginn and Davis were not Crable and Burgess, well I'm not so sure that Davis doesn't belong in the category with Crable and Burgess. At least he didn't go to the school up north. So I wish Davis well but I can tell you he is not the same kid now that once wanted to proudly play for OSU and represent Drushawn Humphrey there. I guess envisions of grandeur can do that to you.
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 1:46:18 PM)
Hi redondo...I think the OSU staff still thought they were in on Fred until the Toledo Blade article appeared. I was told Davis had another visit with the OSU coaches again right before that and things went well. That was obviously just a cursory for Fred. Once again, his own coach was surprised so I am assuming that OSU's staff was also surprised.
mcorf (Jan 29, 2004 1:43:59 PM)
If Dukes is like S. Holmes, I think we got a good one here. Your thoughts on him?
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 1:48:33 PM)
Hi mcorf...I like the logic except that Dukes is a bigger Holmes which I like even better. I don't much about Dukes to be honest with you. I had a heads up on Holmes a couple of years ago before he committed and knew a little about him. With Dukes, I don't know a lot more than what's been on the Internet about him. I think it's a great Conley-type grass roots pickup for the Bucks.
Buckeyefreak (Jan 29, 2004 1:49:00 PM)
Do we have realistic chance to land Rhyan Anderson? I hope so! BTW- how many scholarships left do we have after Kennedy and Dukes?
LloydSev (Jan 29, 2004 1:49:04 PM)
Gary, Rhyan Anderson seems to have a new favorite every week, but Ohio State is always at least in his top2.. what is your prediction here?
tsteele316 (Jan 29, 2004 1:49:10 PM)
Gary, what is your read on Rhyan Anderson?
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 1:53:19 PM)
About Anderson...I had it from a good source after his visit that things went really well. He is not one of the guys that I have been tracking but I do like the fact that we continue to be in his top two or three. Someone who knows told me he had a really good visit on Dec. 5 but that was so long ago. I like the fact that Fickell has played video games with him..etc. That would be a great late pickup by the staff. As far as the numbers go... Steve always crunches that stuff. All I really know is that if JT and his staff really want someone...they'll be included on signing day.. if the feeling is mutual obviously.
JoNasty (Jan 29, 2004 1:53:40 PM)
gary what do think is the reason for the # of recruits from PA. and will we be able to continue getting these top PA. prospects in years to come?
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 1:56:32 PM)
Hi JoNasty...Joe Daniels is the reason for the # of recruits we will land in Pa. this year. Both Kyle Mitchum and his coach spoke tremendously of the job that Daniels did with them. Also Rory Nicol spoke well of Daniels. Of course JT is the great closer in the back end but Daniels is obviously a great set up guy. I'm sure Lyons will say the same thing about Daniels on Monday night.
Wilsy (Jan 29, 2004 1:56:56 PM)
Hey Gary do you still think Dwayne Jarrett will be a buckeye?
constructive (Jan 29, 2004 1:57:06 PM)
Lets talk about Jarrett, what is the rumor of him going to USC and Davis switching to OSU...anything of merit there
BUCKEYEFAN4LIFE (Jan 29, 2004 1:57:13 PM)
Joined the chat late so dont know if this has been asked? Whats the deal with Jarrett is he not taking calls from anyone, Or is it just Buckeye reporters? Whats the deal with him? Havent heard much lately.
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 2:01:25 PM)
About Jarrett...I'll proudly say again that I was told from a really good source that Jarrett had a great visit to OSU and it looked like there was a really great chance that we could land him. I spoke to Jarrett two times after his visit and he spoke well of his OSU visit to me, of course, but he still said he had to talk it over with his family and coaches. Ira Guilford was his host and he's from Hoboken NJ and he had a great visit with him. So combine all that...I felt really good about Jarrett. But he has not taken my call on his cell phone since that time and that's all that I know. I don't go by what others report, only what I have found out. I want to remain positive especially since Williams and Davis aren't in the picture and they were the last time I spoke to Jarrett. But according to everyone else...we no longer have a chance with him. I still call him every day and will do so until I have reason not to.
Helpinghand (Jan 29, 2004 2:01:47 PM)
Gary, you have been around this team for a long time. How do you feel about this recruiting class in general, and how it stacks against other years?
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 2:06:40 PM)
HI helpinghand...I would like to converse with you sometime...firstname.lastname@example.org is my email address and that goes for everyone if you have a question. I really like the offensive line guys in this class. Person, Skinner and Mitchum are great gets in my opinion. If Rehring is of that caliber as well than that's even more fantastic. I like the top end talent of Ginn, Freeman, Nicol and Haw in this class and just the overall athletes in this class that we seem to be assembling. So all in all...with hopefully the addition of Lyons next Monday and maybe a Bryant and Anderson as well....it can be a really great class. I think this class has a chance to be the backbone of a few tremendous teams in the near future.
NJBuckeye (Jan 29, 2004 2:07:11 PM)
Gary, any surprise recruit(s) out there that may end up at OSU?
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 2:09:00 PM)
Hi NJBuckeye...if you can help us with Jarrett ... if NJ is for New Jersey...then that would be a surprise recruit. Maybe Estovian...the LB from Miami could be a possibility. Irizarry hosted him and Shaun Lane thought Estovian had a really good visit when he was here.
Wilsy (Jan 29, 2004 2:09:23 PM)
Gary Who do you think could be a surprise and not Red Shirt and make an impact next year other then Ginn?
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 2:12:28 PM)
I really like Jon Skinner for some reason. I think Marcus Freeman could obviously make an impact. Mitchum looked great on film and he has great size so he could be in the two-deep. It's really hard to project now...let's take another look after the final class is in. But Ginn is truly a keeper in this class.
mcorf (Jan 29, 2004 2:12:35 PM)
Gary, what positions do our 4 OL recruits end up playing at and how soon before they see the field?
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 2:15:05 PM)
Rehring has to be a tackle...he's enormous...I think Skinner and Mitchum are interchangeable at guard and tackle...good for depth... and Person could likely be a true guard. In order of chronological impact...only a guess...Person, Mitchum, Skinner and Rehring.
borderbuck (Jan 29, 2004 2:16:14 PM)
Is there any walk-on, or any non-schollie player, that JT might save a schollie for in order to reward them for 2 or 3 yrs of hard work, contributions, loyalty? (that's gotta be a good question :)
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 2:19:10 PM)
Hi borderbuck...yes it is a good question...but I've only been looking at guys recently that are going to be scholarship players on signing day so I can really identify any walk-ons or others at this time. I'd like to see a bigger walkon group every year...guys who not only think they truly belong and are willing to go and prove it and earn a scholarship. We don't get enough of those kinds of guys.
BirmBuckeye (Jan 29, 2004 2:19:27 PM)
Should any stock be put into the fact that Miami is in serious need of LB's and they weren't actively recruiting Estopinan? Or is their arrogance such that they feel they can continue to let these Florida kids go, because they can get anyone they want?
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 2:23:20 PM)
The main reason I like Estopinan other than his football prowess is because of his wrestling prowess. I truly love that combination. I'm sure Fickell loves that combination as well. I don't know the mindset at Miami...I don't know the depth chart there either. I just like good hard-nosed football players that make football plays to be on my team. That's the biggest indicator of greatness than anything else. When they're like that in football and wrestling...Tim Anderson and Alex Stepanovich... you know they're special. I'll take Estophian in a heartbeat, but I'd love Bryant if I have a preference...Just because.
russiabuck (Jan 29, 2004 2:23:41 PM)
Is Morelli a possiblity??
GaryHousteau (Jan 29, 2004 2:25:42 PM)
Hi russiabuck...is Morrelli a possibility? I would say no...but I wouldn't rule him out either. Morelli would be the biggest surprise recruit of any. But there has been communications with the family and the staff in recent weeks is all I do know.
Kirk (Jan 29, 2004 2:35:51 PM)
Ok, Gary thanks for the chat! Talk to you next week. Everyone, Gary and I have to take off, but there's a bunch of people here still, so feel free to continue chatting amongst yourselves if you'd like!
