Good afternoon for those of you who are in attendance. Let's make the most of this chat that we can. Smile!
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 1:04:31 PM)
I spoke with Coach Ginn this morning and he says there's absolutely nothing more to it than curiosity as to what is out there. Nothing has changed as far as his firm commitment to Ohio State.
dcbuck (Mar 4, 2004 1:04:11 PM)
Who's going to be the starting MLB at the end of the season?
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 1:05:14 PM)
Hi dcbuck...my guess is Schlegel as to who will be the starting MLB by the end of the season. Hawk, Schlegel and Carpenter across the board.
osufan25 (Mar 4, 2004 1:05:06 PM)
Gary, Is there any truth to the rumors on espn.com that Jamario is rethinking his committ to OSU?
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 1:06:59 PM)
Hi osufan25...I briefly addressed the Jamario situation when I first came on the chat. Forget about anything you hear with him rethinking his commitment to OSU. He's a Buckeye all the way. He just wants to take a few visits to see what it's like out there. Nothing, even with the home situation with the Ginn's has changed. I just spoke with Ginn Sr. this morning.
osufan25 (Mar 4, 2004 1:06:20 PM)
Gary, what do you think our chances of pulling guys like Maurice Wells out of the south this year will be?
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 1:09:23 PM)
About Wells...I kind of like our chances. Obviously the OSU staff is very interested in him at this point and that's a really good thing. If all the reports on him are accurate...he's a good one and there's really a better than average shot that we have to land him.
osufan25 (Mar 4, 2004 1:09:28 PM)
Gary, that's great to hear about Jamario! Thank you for clearing that up for all of us worried fans.
buckdave (Mar 4, 2004 1:09:30 PM)
don't know if this has been asked or not but what is the deal with hall maybe redshirting?
ToledoBucknut (Mar 4, 2004 1:09:33 PM)
Gary- Could you clarify on what the "little birdie" told you about Mo Hall possibly taking a redshirt year to rehab his knees? What is the possible academic problem that may prevent it?
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 1:13:38 PM)
About Maurice Hall...Someone who knows told me just yesterday that the staff would really like to see Hall redshirt this coming year so that he can get healthy and have a chance to show what kind of ability he really does have in 2005. He played with 2 really bad knees last year is what I was told and it might be a while yet until he's fully healthy. He's such a wonderful person and young man and I know he has high aspirations academically so the thinking is he may want to just play out his four years and move on to his life after football. Nothing is certain from what I am told but it would definitely be a good thing to see a classy young man like Hall around for two more seasons. I wish him the best no matter which route he chooses and a speedy recovery for his knees. He's one of my favorites no doubt.
dcbuck (Mar 4, 2004 1:13:58 PM)
Maybe a little OT, but w/ all the talk of steroids, how in the world do some of these college football players put on so much weight in one or two years, what is the testing that goes on in CFB?
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 1:18:51 PM)
Wow...wasn't prepared for that question. I tend to think college football players are confronted by people to use illegal steroids but I would imagine the testing and the common sense and people dying now are enough to prevent most if not all from indulging in such a harmful and dangerous substance. I don't know the testing procedures but I would bet that the kids are well informed of them and the consequences of being caught with the substance in their bodies. I guess the vices of a college student and athlete are just too numerous for us older folk to imagine these days.
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 1:22:42 PM)
Between now and the end of school...and in between my writing assignments are completed for Bucknuts the Magazine...I will make another sweep of Northeast Ohio and maybe even the Columbus/Dayton area to meet players in person and get photos. Steve and I will be making a minitrip coming up here in March to meet a few of these guys who are or will be recruited by big schools, guys like Haas and Robiskie and Hartline. So if you'll be patient and with track season upon us...I will be on the road soon providing up close and personal stories and photos of some of the guys we all want to know about in the next year or two. I have nothing new on Haas and Robiskie right now to report.
buckdave (Mar 4, 2004 1:23:00 PM)
what is the latest on ginn and the summer games
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 1:26:13 PM)
He's just preparing now for his high school track season and it should be a pleasure to watch the Glenville team in action this year. There is speed to burn on the oval with that group of athletes. Teddy will continue to prepare for a run at the Olympic trials all during the spring and summer months leading up to it. He's doing some work at the Speed Plant in Euclid as well.
MBuck37 (Mar 4, 2004 1:26:17 PM)
Good Afternoon Gary, How good is this kid Freddie Lennix from Glenville? Is he projected as a Safety or a Linebacker? Is he a lock to come to Ohio State? Thanks.
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 1:31:43 PM)
Hi MBuck37...My prediction days are over and you certainly won't hear me use the 'L' word again around here. Too many people take what you say too seriously and hence there is absolutely no wiggle room. As far as Lenix (one 'n' not two) goes, I've seen him play numerous times in person and I really like the speed and intensity that he plays with at the linebacking position. This kid is flat out fast on the field first and foremost. But he has a really solid nose for the ball as well. He thinks he might even be a top-notch running back prospect this year...that's his thinking and I fully agree. He's put together very well and if anyone can play LB at his size (maybe a tad under 6-0) he can. That's his natural position. But he's talented to play anywhere you put him. Of course he likes the Bucks and if OSU wants him...he'll be a Buckeye! Shocking huh?
MrBuckeye (Mar 4, 2004 1:32:25 PM)
Hi Gary. What's the deal with Lemming's report on ESPN-Recruiting that O'Neal is looking around?
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 1:34:02 PM)
Hi MrBuckeye...really Jamario will be a Buckeye in 2005 there is absolutely no question about it. Smile!
MrBuckeye (Mar 4, 2004 1:34:33 PM)
Thanks, sorry, late joiner.
BuckeyeDave (Mar 4, 2004 1:36:09 PM)
If offered do you think Miles Schlicter will red-shirt for a year?
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 1:40:22 PM)
About Schlichter, considering the fact that either Zwick and Smith and then Boeckman will likely be around for three or four or even five years from now, Schlichter may indeed choose to redshirt but that is so far into the future and so many snaps under center until his time may come... and who knows if his future will even be at OSU. I tend to think it will be and he could be the heir apparent to Boeckman after his two seasons under center. But again...who knows.
MrBuckeye (Mar 4, 2004 1:40:26 PM)
Think the recruiting staff will put much effort into trying to sway Super Mario away from his commitment to Michigan?
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 1:46:12 PM)
From everything I know...and I know a couple of Harding assistants and former assistants very well...it's not worth the effort to try and lure Manningham away from Michigan. He's one of them and it sickens me...I don't even want to cover him this year but I'm sure I'll be at a few Harding games...namely Glenville in week two. I plan on setting up a meet and greet in Warren with the help of some of the good people there if people want to get together before that game. Stay tuned for details in the summer. But forget about Mario...he's gone. Duane says Hartline is as good or better than Mario and although I'll have to see that in person to believe it...I hope he's right. Folks in just a year and a half, he didn't play until week eight of his sophomore season, I've seen Mario do some incredible things with the football in his hands. He's a special talent and a much better prospect that Bam Childress...which I've heard some people compare him too.
Susan (Mar 4, 2004 1:46:36 PM)
Hi Gary. How's Jamario doing, aside from football? Has he gotten past the "trouble" he was in....learned anything from it? Also, is he involved in any other sports such as basketball or track and if so, how's he doing there?
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 1:52:23 PM)
Hi Susan (stranger), how was your vacation??? Jamario seems to have his head on straight now, I just spoke with him at length on signing day. I believe that his life is so much different now than what it was just one year ago. He's in a really good and stable situation and he's involved with people that really care about him. He's getting ready for the track season along with his brother Teddy. Jamario and the best 100 meter guy in the Senate league from last year, Howard from Collinwood, will join an already explosive Glenville track team this year. This may be the best high school track team ever assembled in Ohio. Jamario is making the most of his second chance...that's for certain.
MBuck37 (Mar 4, 2004 1:52:34 PM)
Who do you think will be the one player that could have a break out season that no one expects to?
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 1:57:53 PM)
Carpenter will but I think we all are expecting that. I think Tim Schafer will surprise people. I was impressed with T.J. Downing from high school and his father was a player so he may surprise people. I really like Tony Gonzalez so I'm hoping he will surprise us. I like Devin Jordan. I like David Patterson to have a breakout season on defense. I really like John Kerr but I don't know where he'll fit in. Quinn Pitcock is a football player and a big play-maker on the line as well. I love playmakers like Patterson and Pitcock on defense. But the top player to have a breakout season next year will be Tim Schafer in my opinion and boy do we need at least one offensive lineman to have a breakout season.
Kirk (Mar 4, 2004 1:58:21 PM)
We have one more question for Gary and then we'll let him go for today...
MrBuckeye (Mar 4, 2004 1:58:26 PM)
What's the status of Tress filling the open coaching positions? See any possibility of him trying to lure Ginn Sr. to the staff or is he too valuable as a recruiting tool in the field directing kids our way?
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 2:04:05 PM)
No Ginn Sr. will stay at Glenville. A funny story...on signing day at Glenville... all 11 G-ville players were sitting at the head table and Ted Sr. was sitting next to his son at the head table. All of the players began...left to right... giving their name and the school they will be at next year... Ted Jr. gave his name and said Ohio State and then Ted Sr. was next in line so he said 'Ted Ginn...Glenville High School,' it was unexpected and it drew laughter from everyone in attendance. So he's right where he needs to be. There are some rumors it's going to be Tress's brother...I can't say at this point. I don't think it will be a high school coach but I don't know. I've always wanted one more former OSU player on the staff but I'm sure Tress already has his man and they're waiting for the right time to make the announcement. If it is his brother... it's a solid and safe choice and JT is known to make a few of those in his day! Smile!
Kirk (Mar 4, 2004 2:04:56 PM)
Thanks a bunch Gary and everyone for joining us today! Stay tuned as we'll post a chat transcript within the hour. See you all soon!
GaryHousteau (Mar 4, 2004 2:05:01 PM)
Thanks for chatting today...it's another week closer to Spring football and I can't wait. We hope to keep up with any big recruiting news that goes on in the spring as well. Have a great day and tell the ones that you love...that you love them. Smile!
BuckeyeDave (Mar 4, 2004 2:05:12 PM)
