buckhunter asks "With all the info across the boards on Denlinger, do you have any insight of your own? Have you seen film of him?
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:10:23 PM)
Haven't seen any film. Seen him in person a few times. He is a big boy. With more lbs. could be a DT down the line. We have him at 6-4, 265 pounds, so he could go either way. With the number of times I've seen him at OSU, I'd think an offer is imminent. Of course, Nick Smith from GlenOak practically took up residence on campus at all the camps, games, etc. he attended last year and was never offered.
ZwickHead (Mar 17, 2004 1:10:30 PM)
Ringer sounds awesome. Do you think we offer? Sounds like he may well accept if offered. Thanks.
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:12:14 PM)
Ringer is potentially a nice college back. Again, his academic situation will probably come into play. I have no idea if his situation is the same as Ray Williams' or not.Two 2,000-yard seasons is good, no doubt.
Fighter59 (Mar 17, 2004 1:12:20 PM)
Steve, How far do you see the lady buckeyes going in the tourney?
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:16:13 PM)
Great question. They have to beat West Virginia in the first round. Then would play the winner of Boston College and Eastern Michigan to get to the Sweet 16. Playing at St. John Arena should help. But they need to get 4,000-5,000 people in there. Why do I keep feeling like they'll be lucky to have 2,000? BC stunned UConn in the Big East semis, then beat Rutgers (which beat OSU) in the finals. OSU had chances against Purdue and PSU, teams on UConn's level, but could not get it done. So they have their work cut out for them, no doubt. Obviously, if they get past BC they become the 3 seed, so to speak. The 2 seed is Kansas State and the one in the Mideast is Duke. Not sure I see a Final Four in this team's future, but this is the year to capitalize on homecourt and go to the Sweet 16.
ZwickHead (Mar 17, 2004 1:16:17 PM)
Steve could review who we have offers out to at this point? Any commits looming on the horizon?
Kirk (Mar 17, 2004 1:20:11 PM)
I got booted... Steve did you answer the last question yet
Kirk (Mar 17, 2004 1:21:51 PM)
I apologize guys -- since I got booted, it cleared out the question queue, so I lost some questions. buckhunter, BuckeyeBK, can you guys re-send your last questions? Sorry about that
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:22:12 PM)
The list of offers is not long and indicates with few spots in this class, they are being extremely cautious. It includes PA DB Justin King, Hamilton DB Adam Myers-White, MD WR Derrick Williams, Fla. RB Maurice Wells, N.Y. DE Doug Worthington and Fla. WR Fred Rouse (from Bauserman's school). If Worthington (6-7, 256) turns out as good as the last DE OSU got from N.Y., then I'd take him in a heartbeat (VBG).
BuckeyeDave (Mar 17, 2004 1:22:33 PM)
What are the odds of Monday chats next fall?
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:23:35 PM)
That's a good idea. We have to see what the weekly routine will be in terms of interviews and so on. Stay on us about that or anything else you think we should try and do.
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:24:15 PM)
I'm hoping to have one on April 24 after the spring game, too. Stay tuned. When I was at BSB, that was one of the best ones I ever did.
BuckeyeDave (Mar 17, 2004 1:24:55 PM)
Gimme a projected 2-deep for next season. But that can wait until after the Scarlet & Gray game, I suppose.
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:26:15 PM)
Two-deep coming right up, be patient, I'll do offense first
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:28:16 PM)
QB Zwick, Smith; TB Ross, Haw or Pittman; FB Joe, Schnittker; SE Hall, Hollins or Jordan; FL Holmes, Childress, Hiley; TE Hamby, Irizarry; LT Sims, Downing; LG Olds, Coleman; C Mangold, Datish; RG Kne, walk-on; RT Schafer, Barton.
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:31:16 PM)
Defense: DE Fraser, Patterson or Reggie Smith; DT Green, Penton; DT Pitcock, Cotton; DE Kudla, Richardson or Frost; WLB Hawk, Matthews; MLB Schlegel, D'Andrea or Kerr; SLB Carpenter, Kerr or Lukens; CB Fox, Jacobs; FS Salley, Everett; SS Whitner, Mitchell; CB Youboty or E.J. Underwood or Ginn. K Nugent. P Trapasso or Huston.
BuckeyeDave (Mar 17, 2004 1:31:22 PM)
That was quicker than I expected. Thanks!
BuckeyeBK (Mar 17, 2004 1:31:25 PM)
Steve, Are you going to any of the NCAA games on Friday or Sunday?
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:32:27 PM)
Nope, not going to make it to any of the NCAA men's stuff. Wish I was going, but have got some other things planned (when I knew OSU wasn't going to be in I made some other plans).
ZwickHead (Mar 17, 2004 1:32:49 PM)
Steve: Do you think Troy Smith gets a fair shot at QB or do you think JT already has his mind made up?
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:34:10 PM)
Oh yes, Troy Smith will get a fair shake. The fact is they have to get them both ready to play. The starter could go down against Cincinnati and the other guy would have to finish the year. Those 2 and Boeckman will get more work than they care to have this spring. But that's good. The coaches will put them in some real difficult situations and look to see who pulls through and who makes mistakes (critical INTs) in those rough spots.
tsteele316 (Mar 17, 2004 1:34:23 PM)
when did osu offer worthington?
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:37:30 PM)
Not sure, he's listed in the Insiders data base as an offer. It says in the Insiders update that he was offered by OSU either 3/11 or 3/12. Here is the link. http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=145&p=9&c=2&yr=2005&cid=242158&nid=1200971&fhn=1
buckhunter (Mar 17, 2004 1:37:34 PM)
Steve, the more I read, the more it looks like we may go out of state for more kids than we orginally thought. (OL offers are slow coming) In your opinion, who do you see getting an offer soon?
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:39:49 PM)
Offer soon? Hmmm. I thought they would have more out there now than they do. Sounds like they are high on Hartline the WR. maybe Denlinger, possibly the OL Cironi (Gary has an update today), LB-DB Lenix. They have Nike camp in April, evaluation period in May and camps in June to bring in all of this intelligence on these kids and make better decisions. I see no reason why they shouldn't wait this year.
tsteele316 (Mar 17, 2004 1:39:56 PM)
you dont think that person will make the 2 deep behind kne over a walk on?
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:40:36 PM)
They're going to get 16-18 good to great players this year, regardless of when they offer. Book it.
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:41:31 PM)
tsteele, oh I don't know. OL is hard to make as a freshman. Bollman spoke recently and mentioned a pair of his returning walk-ons McLaughlin and Conroy. I think he considers them among his best 8-10 right now. Whether a freshman moves by them in Aug. or not, while certainly possible, remains to be seen.
BuckeyeBK (Mar 17, 2004 1:41:49 PM)
Will we offer the kid from Troy anytime soon? He seems like a Buckeye already and will commit when offered.
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:44:25 PM)
That has been asked already (no problem). My feeling is by how many times he's been at OSU, etc., it seems inevitable he will be offered. But OSU is working on its own timetable (not mine or yours) and I like what they're doing. By waiting they are reducing the chance of making a mistake (not saying taking this kid would be one, by the way, either). They only have 16-18 spots. They have 4 of those filled with O'Neal, Boone, Pettrey and Bauserman. They want to be totally certain on the other 12-14. What this tells me is they are sure of about 5-6 guys they want to have (listed above, including Myers-White). The rest they are still waiting to make sure of. I have no problem with that. Take your time, I say.
buckhunter (Mar 17, 2004 1:45:34 PM)
If we don't get him, sounds like someone will. Jamie seemed to like him on tape.
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:46:00 PM)
good, get him in here yesterday then (ha ha).
yooperbuck (Mar 17, 2004 1:48:19 PM)
where does stan white end up this year?
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:49:40 PM)
Good question. When I told you that Bollman mentioned 2 walk-ons, Bill Conley was also interviewed and didn't mention White. I'm sure it was just an oversight, but I wonder if he is the 3rd TE now behind Hamby and Irizarry. He is such a smart kid. They need to find something for him to do.
ZwickHead (Mar 17, 2004 1:49:48 PM)
Do you think Stull gets an offer?
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:51:32 PM)
Probably. Duane just talked to his dad and should have an update sometime soon. The son has said OSU is his first choice and he'll be at OSU Nike and likely back for summer camp, too. He is 6-4, 190 with a year to grow still. From what I know (no film viewed), they could do a lot worse.
buckhunter (Mar 17, 2004 1:51:34 PM)
I personally like to Bucks waiting, this way we know the ones offered are sure-fire guys!
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:52:23 PM)
I agree. That takes a lot of guesswork out of it. You want guys who are going to be great college players, not necessarily guys who peaked as juniors in high school.
ZwickHead (Mar 17, 2004 1:52:28 PM)
Stull sounds like Hoyer physically.
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:52:44 PM)
Yes, sounds similar in size, etc.
Kirk (Mar 17, 2004 1:55:50 PM)
Any more questions for Steve today? I'd like to know if I should take Wisconsin over Pitt and UNC over Miss St but I'm not sure any insight there would help me in my indecision
BuckeyeDave (Mar 17, 2004 1:56:21 PM)
Frank DeFord suggested that the NCCA hold their Women's Basketball Tournament in February for a variety of good reasons, not the least of which is to put it in the spotlight and separate it from the Men's Tournament. What do you think?
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 1:57:50 PM)
Those are 2 of the tough questions, no doubt. I did 3 brackets and picked Pitt over Wisky on 2 of them. Both of those teams got the shaft in the seedings. I actually have Texas over UNC on 2 brackets, then Miss State over Texas in the Sweet 16 on 2 of my 3 as well. Hope that helps.
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 2:00:33 PM)
Dave, not a bad idea. Maybe back up the men's a week and move the women's up. They'd almost have to have it out of the way by the weekend of the conference tourneys because those monopolize so much TV time over that weekend (wasn't that great or what?). By Sunday I was ready for it to be over. ESPN and ESPN2 last Sat. probably had a combined 14-15 games. Plus 4 on CBS. The women need their own platform.Maybe start their season 3 weeks earlier. and wrap it up the first weekend in March. Not a bad idea.
buckhunter (Mar 17, 2004 2:00:36 PM)
Steve- What is Maryland doing recruiting Ohio? Do you have any insight into that?
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 2:02:37 PM)
I'm not sure what you mean, Maryland in football? They've been here after second-tier guys for 5 years or more. They're a national program now. Some of their coaches may have Ohio ties, too. I can't think of any great players they've taken from Ohio, but they're trying to get established. I think Barrow was looking at Md. before committing to OSU.
BuckeyeDave (Mar 17, 2004 2:02:41 PM)
Any news on Orton from Huber Heights-Wayne?
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 2:03:33 PM)
Nothing to report. I think he will attract a great deal of attention. OSU is well aware of him.
buckhunter (Mar 17, 2004 2:04:23 PM)
Bring on Spring Ball. ..we need some excitment!
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 2:04:47 PM)

Ok, if there are no more questions for Steve, we'll let him go for today. Thanks Steve for stopping by
SteveHelwagen (Mar 17, 2004 2:05:50 PM)
