Hi everyone...let's get it going with the Nike camp, the spring game and the draft being the hot topics of the day. Smile!

The Almighty Turd (Apr 22, 2004 1:03:25 PM)
Gary, whats the deal with Todd Denlinger he is getting some big offers. are we going to offer this kid or what?

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 1:06:20 PM)
Hi Turd...Denlinger is the mystery guy I guess. I'm sure they want to see him camp but they might have to offer him anyway. I'm sure it will come later this summer.

russiabuck (Apr 22, 2004 1:06:25 PM)
I read some stats from a scrimmage last week, and Zwick's numbers didn't look so hot. With Smith's numbers being a little better and the fact that he was drafted first. Wouldn't you have to say he has a bit of an edge?

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 1:10:33 PM)
Hi russiabuck, I have a bit of a different take on the QB situation, one that isn't as favorable for Smith as other people have. First off I like both guys but the main difference was exposed right away in the scrimmage. Smith is looking to run almost immediately and although he is so talented on his feet and has a strong arm, he shouldn't abandone the pocket so easily. But if results are more important than the means, then Smith may have the edge coming out of camp. Zwick will be slower and steadier, IMO, and that might win out in the end.

dozer51 (Apr 22, 2004 1:10:48 PM)
Hey Gary, who will be at the Spring game. I wonder if numbers will be down due to everyone being there last week for the NIKE clinic

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 1:13:29 PM)
Hi dozer...I'm not certain of any list of players that will be attending at this time. There are track meets going on as well. Sorry.

edbuck52 (Apr 22, 2004 1:13:41 PM)
HI Gary. Do you think the Bucks answered a lot of their questions in Spring practice?

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 1:18:12 PM)
Hi edbuck...Let's see at Defensively, Mark Snyder is looking to build depth and I think he's gotten to look at a lot of guys in that aspect because of injuries. Doug Datish has had a good audition this spring and should make the line more solid. I think T.J. Downing has had a good opportunity as well this spring. They need bodies on the offensive line before the talented freshman guys come in in the fall. I think Kirk Barton has been hampered by injuries. I think Ross is showing that he can step up this year at tailback. There's still a lot of questions to be answered but progress has been made I'm sure.

toledobucknutty (Apr 22, 2004 1:18:26 PM)
Gary, have you seen any film on that behemoth OL from Pennsylvania. Sounds like he must eat up a lot of space, but also sounds like his legs are heavy.

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 1:22:16 PM)
Hi toledo...if you're speaking of Hartung from Butler...I met him in person last year at one of the home games. He's a big fellow for sure. He's really big. He's a basketball player and takes up even more space on the hardwood. He's almost too big in fact. He has a teammate...Pritts... who is a midget compared to him but he's a prospect at tackle as well. I hope to get down to Butler before the school year is over. It's only about a 45 minute drive or so from where I live.

The Almighty Turd (Apr 22, 2004 1:22:24 PM)
Gary, who do you like this saturday in the spring game and by any chance can you record it and send me a copy :)

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 1:25:16 PM)
I like the scarlet for these reasons... Holmes, Zwick, Carpenter, Hamby, Sims, Ross and Kerr that were drafted on the Scarlet side. I'm sure there will be copies of the game floating around somewhere.

BuckeyeDave (Apr 22, 2004 1:25:46 PM)
Late to the chat. Sorry if this question has already been asked - Should we really be excited about Lydell Ross at RB this season? I know 12 carries for 100 yds looks good, but if you take off the 1st carry, you've got 11 carries for 20 yds and that pretty bad. Didn't Joe perform better with 11 carries for 45 yds?

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 1:31:13 PM)
I'm willing to give Ross every benefit of the doubt and I'm hoping he has a Jonathan Wells season this year. I want to be excited but I'm not betting the mortgage on him. I like Brandon Joe if he can stay healthy. I'd love to see him get a legitimate shot at carrying the ball. And although I saw Pittman play in high school, I saw him do a few things last Saturday that made me get really excited about his future. Pittman has a great upside folks. Those three could give us a nice stable of backs because right now we can't count on Guildford obviously. And Hall has to deal with his knees before he's even healthy to play.

toledobucknutty (Apr 22, 2004 1:31:26 PM)
What is your take on Troy Smith? I have read numerous articles over the last year that he has outperformed JZ on several occasions. It sounds like his completion percentage was a lot better in the O vs. D scrimmage and that he had NO PICKS. Yet everyone wants to anoint Zwick the next big thing. Is it because of Zwick's pedigree that he gets so much more love or is he really the better QB? I've yet to see them in action, so...

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 1:36:27 PM)
I'm glad that JT is the man who is ultimately responsible for that decision because it's going to be an unpopular one no matter who is the starter. But it's clear there has to be a clear number one choice and no hemming and hawing around between the two. I think you know what you're going to get with Zwick, slow and steady, but with Smith it could be anything from a misread or checkdown to a great improvisation that makes you say wow. That in the end is the decision that JT will have to ultimately make as to how he would like his offense to be run. And knowing JT so well..............

toledobucknutty (Apr 22, 2004 1:37:01 PM)
What do you think Reecie will do if he gets shut out? Do you think he will call up God himself and TELL him that he is going back to tOSU? I personally do not think his ego will let him play a year in the CFL or NFLE.

TulsaBuck (Apr 22, 2004 1:37:06 PM)
The second Clarett (and Williams) were at least temporarily barred from NFL Draft, Pete Carroll and the Pac10 Commish issued announcements on doing all they could to help Mike get back into college football. Andy G. looked like he swallowed a porcupine and JT hemmed and hawed ... knowing that they don't want Mo back, shouldn't they at least pretend to want to help him badly -- just for perception with media and recruits? Maybe I'm being too disingenuous with today's pr culture -- but it doesn't play well in many outlets.

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 1:42:36 PM)
I think Ohio State will never say never about Reecie coming back but when they say they would have to explore the possibilities if Clarett even wanted to come back...says it all. OSU wants Clarett back about as much as they want it to snow on Saturday for the spring game. The sooner Reecie gets to the NFL the bigger the collective sigh of relief there will be in the athletic program. Reecie and his people will plug on for a supplemental draft at any point. It's just really terrible that Clarett and his people continue to go down the wrong path at each and every turn. It's really sad. I think what could have been and now I see what it is! I had such high hopes for Reecie at OSU and now his entire future is in shambles.

BuckeyeDave (Apr 22, 2004 1:43:04 PM)
I was at a reception for JT this passed winter. He said that tOSU has a program in place that allows ALL scholarship athletes to return to Ohio State as a student and receive the FULL benefit of the remainder of their scholarship at any time. Clarett burned his own bridges as an athlete at Ohio St. His options as a student are still wide open.

The Almighty Turd (Apr 22, 2004 1:43:08 PM)
Gary please address the recent lenix news and his saying he favors the gators, i really hope this kid becomes a buckeye.

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 1:44:52 PM)
BuckeyeDave...about Clarett I think his bridges have been incinerated. There's no hope, IMHO, that he will ever be in a classroom again at the Ohio State University.

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 1:48:31 PM)
Turd about Lenix...if Ohio State offers, Lenix will be a question. First they have to offer. With Ginn's own son now at OSU, you don't think that his other best players now and in the future won't be going to Ohio State as well. Ohio State is where he will go if he gets offered and with his speed and his ability as a football player, an offer is in the offing...that's my guess. He's a football player. I'm sure he'll visit Florida but he's a Buckeye, if/when he's offered. From what I know the offer will come.

edbuck52 (Apr 22, 2004 1:48:39 PM)
Some think offers are going out slowly, others think it's fine since the May evaluation period isn't even here yet. Your thoughts? And, do you think the staff is going to go after fewer and higher rated players, and really focus hard on them, while filling in specific needs?

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 1:54:22 PM)
Hi edbuck...after seeing some of the studlier guys at the Nike camp this past weekend, I think the offers will be slowly and painstakingly doled out this spring and summer. When you see guys like E.J. Morton-Green, Alex Daniels and Dennis Underwood among others, I can see that OSU really does need to take their time. I think there's a lot of talent to choose from. A LB from GlenOak, Brandon Long, might not even get a sniff from OSU and he looks tremendous. There were a lot of good looking prospects out there on Saturday and there's a lot more, I'm sure, that weren't there that OSU is considering. BTW, Underwood's head coach at ST. Thomas Acquinas played TE for JT at YSU. That's good to know.

toledobucknutty (Apr 22, 2004 1:54:40 PM)
Who were the studs and surprises at NIKE camp?

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 2:00:14 PM)
I just mentioned four of them from the last question. I like Hiller the QB from Orrville. I thought Mister Simpson looked great. I liked Pollard, the lineman from Westerville South. I saw Greg Keys for the first time and he looked pretty good. I liked Talonnie Russell from Detroit Depores. I thought Brandon Harrison looked great. I could really go on and on. But I know I didn't get to see as many guys as closely as I would have liked before Steve and I left for the jersey scrimmage.

OUKid (Apr 22, 2004 2:00:20 PM)
Gary, do you know if D'Andrea is going to be 100% by this fall and ready to start the opening game?

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 2:03:42 PM)
Hi OUKid...barring another injury or aggravation to the shoulder, I'm sure D'Andrea will be 100% by the fall. Our linebackers are going to be fantastic this fall. I can't wait. Keep in mind...Thomas Mathews is an afterthought and he was a tremendous high school linebacker in Florida. A tackling machine. He led everyone in tackles on saturday with nine. Don't be surprised when John Kerr catches everyone's fancy at some point in the season next year. And Marcus Freeman is as good as advertised.

Seabus (Apr 22, 2004 2:03:47 PM)
A little late joining, not sure if you have talked about this. After the jersey scrimmage, I am now concerned about the RT position. Neither Shaffer or Barton looked solid. Do you think one of them can step it up? Or who would be the most likely frosh to help at that position?

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 2:07:41 PM)
Hi Seabus...Barton went down really early with a sprained ankle so that didn't help his cause. I'm worried about that spot as well, I'm not sure how that will shake out this fall. Maybe a T.J. Downing could be the answer. It will be difficult to expect an incoming freshman step up and man the position from the get go. Don't count Barton or Schafer out or anyone that's there yet. I'm sure that spot will be filled by someone already in the program when the season begins.

TulsaBuck (Apr 22, 2004 2:08:11 PM)
Like everything I read and see about Boone, including he and his parents' emphasis on education. Apparently liked the academics at UM. Tell me there's no chance in a million he'll decommit!

dozer51 (Apr 22, 2004 2:08:15 PM)
I'm concerned about the Ohio boys looking elsewhere... Whats up? First Boone traveling to Michigan, Lenix with Florida and now Denlinger with Tennessee? I hope last years blunder with recruiting hasn't changed the hearts of these kids. What is your take on Boone?

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 2:12:34 PM)
Hi Tulsabuck...there's no chance in a million Boone will decommit! I wish someone would step up like Zwick did a few years ago and help recruit his classmates to OSU but on the other hand, these kids want to enjoy the spoils of their position and I don't blame them. I don't Boone should visit Michigan, that's close to committing a Cardinal Sin, but again it's what he wants to do. In the end Boone will be at OSU and so will O'Neal and Kordle, that's all we can really be sure of at this point.

russiabuck (Apr 22, 2004 2:12:58 PM)
Do you have any insight on Darius Hiley and or Ira Guillford as to why they are not practicing?

toledobucknutty (Apr 22, 2004 2:13:06 PM)
Any idea what is going on with Guilford and Hiley?

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 2:14:47 PM)
Yeah I have a really good idea why Hiley and Guilford are sittiing out and it's probably the same reason that you're thinking it is.

edbuck52 (Apr 22, 2004 2:15:40 PM)
Do you think Ginn will be solid holding onto the ball this fall? He was shakey in the Army All-American game. Did he hold onto it well at Glenville?

OUKid (Apr 22, 2004 2:15:50 PM)
Gary do you expect to Ginn will be a starter right off the bat this fall and O St. will have one of the most dangerous return corps. in the country this year with Ginn, Holmes awaiting kickoffs??

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 2:22:54 PM)
Contrary to what I even heard from a couple of reporters at the jersey scrimmage on Saturday, who never saw him play in person, Teddy Ginn is one tough SOB. I saw him blow up a few plays last year and that's a lot because they hard ran to his side, if ever. He'll hit you with a full head of steam in the secondary. And due to the fact that people really got a good shot at him, Ginn was pretty secure with the football. He's not perfect but he's a lot better than people think he is. He's really good on defense and even better when he has the ball in his hands. He will be returning kickoffs again Cincinnati. He and Holmes on punts could be one of the most dangerous return tandems in the country. At corner, he will have a difficult time beating out Youboty or Underwood for playing time, but I wouldn't count him out in the least. He's just a really, really good football player and he's really fast and he's a tough kid.

edbuck52 (Apr 22, 2004 2:23:10 PM)
Is all of the players work after Saturday done without coaches? Do they work with strength coaches between now and August, or do they work on their own following guidelines set by the coaches? I know the seven-on-seven stuff they do is on their own, but was just curious if they technically have to go four months basically on their own?

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 2:25:57 PM)
That's a Steve Helwagen question to answer but I think they can be supervised by the strength and conditioning coaches to some degree and I think they can watch as much film as they want as well. I don't know that technical answer to that but I'm sure they will not go completely unsupervised until August. Plus guys like Zwick and Smith are suppose to make sure they get the guys together for workouts over the summer.

BuckeyeDave (Apr 22, 2004 2:26:06 PM)
Is there any significance to Troy Smith being the 1st QB selected for the spring game?

BuckeyeDave (Apr 22, 2004 2:26:07 PM)
What about Santonio Holmes as the #1 pick for the spring game?

SteveHelwagen (Apr 22, 2004 2:28:24 PM)
Hey Gary (and everybody), a reminder, I will NOT be available Friday. But I will Chat Saturday 6-8 p.m. after the spring game. The first hour will be in this club room with a password. The second hour, starting at 7, will be in the free room. I'm sure we'll have plenty to talk about. see you then!

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 2:32:09 PM)
About Troy Smith...someone said his style is more conducive for success within the rules of the Spring game. Now whether that is an endorsement of the players for him to be the starter next fall...I really doubt it. Is he more popular than Zwick... he might be but I'm sure it's not a popularity contest. The gray thought Smith gave them a better chance to win, for whatever reason. Holmes is just a complete stud and this could be the last year we see him in Ohio Stadium if either Zwick or Smith can get him the football this year. He's really good in so many ways. On his touchdown catch Saturday...the DB, I think Mike Roberts it was, didn't even know the ball was coming his way until Holmes caught it.

The Almighty Turd (Apr 22, 2004 2:32:27 PM)
gary, do you think this is holmes last year as a buckeye?

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 2:33:03 PM)

Kirk (Apr 22, 2004 2:33:41 PM)
Ok, Gary thanks for joining us today. If anyone has any last questions about anything, you can send them in real quick and I can give them a shot. Thanks Gary for stopping by!

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2004 2:35:05 PM)
