Ringer's Hard Work Pays Off

Recently, RB Javon Ringer of Dayton Chaminade-Julienne has been focusing on academics in a big way. Ringer has proven that hard work pays off though as he recently received a qualifying test score.

RB Javon Ringer of Dayton Chaminade-Julienne impressed several observers at Nike Camp a couple of weeks ago. His performance was more impressive if you consider that he hadn't exactly been training for anything.

"When I came in, I had really not been doing anything," he said. "I had been spending all my free time working on my grades. That is my focus. All that I'm doing on the football field doesn't matter if I don't have my grades."

No sports-related activities at all?

"I have not been doing anything," Javon said. "No running, no weightlifting since January. Coach has been chasing me out of the weight room. I want to be in there, but I know I shouldn't, so I don't protest."

It has paid off in a big way. Javon is now a projected qualifier.

"I've been working with tutors and with my mother, and everything is paying off," he said. "I got a 21 on my test. Coach Place told me today. I was super happy when I found out."

Despite not having been in the weight room, Javon still sounded a bit disappointed in his camp showing.

"I enjoyed Nike Camp, but I was not happy with the surface," he said. "Last year, I was 4.34, but Ohio State changed their surface and we could not run with our track shoes. We had to run with cleats, so I ran a 4.44. I was sure I was going to run under 4.3. I was heartbroken.

"If I could have just gotten one week of lifting, I know I could have done better. My weight was down, but when I was lifting, I was right around 195 consistently. Every time I weighed in, I was give or take a pound or two, but the time off has taken a toll."

Still, he did put up some great marks.

"A lot of people there were impressed with my shuttle. It was 3.87. Someone said that was the second-best shuttle ever, I don't know. That's just what I was told," he said.

What's on the horizon for this exciting running back prospect?

"I know I'm going to adidas camp at Notre Dame, and I'm looking to go to MSL," Javon said. "As far as school camps, I know I'm going to Ohio State and Michigan and hopefully some others for one day.

"Florida invited me down to camp. I'm thinking about that. Texas has been in touch. Iowa too. Me and Brandon (Harrison) might go to Iowa (camp) together."
