Hi everyone...I'm more than ready! What's on everyone's mind today?
GreyMonkey (Apr 29, 2004 1:01:44 PM)
Hi Gary. Semi-disturbing news regarding Jamario the other day. Do you feel that he is still a strong OSU lean?
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:03:27 PM)
Hi GreyMonkey...I get so frustrated with this question...no offense to you...I'm not even concerned for one second that Jamario will be no other place than Ohio State. I'm not worried at in the least no matter you hear elsewhere.
Sunburned From the Spring Game (Apr 29, 2004 1:04:06 PM)
Troy smith, looked dull in the game, but what happened that he missed alot of the first half, and will tressel consider that in the fact that zwick put up better numbers
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:06:48 PM)
Hi Sunburned...my burn is turning into a nice base for tan. I'm not certain of your exact question but in a nutshell, Zwick will be the starter going into the fall and Smith will be number two. They'll continue to battle in the fall.
rbuck (Apr 29, 2004 1:06:53 PM)
Hi Gary, Do you think Brandon Harrison will get an offer? I didn't realize he was that in love with OSU?
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:08:33 PM)
Hi rbuck...it's really a numbers game but in the end...with that speed, and we know he can play ball, I think he'll get that elusive offer that he so dearly covets. Yes.
tsteele316 (Apr 29, 2004 1:08:46 PM)
with javon ringer receiving a qualifying score, will osu offer him soon? or perhaps offer he and harrison together?
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:11:20 PM)
Hi tsteele316...If indeed he got a 21...wow... they still need to look at his GPA and then go from there. I'm guessing he'll get offered at camp now. I'd love to see him and Harrison get offered together. I've only recently met both of them in person but they both seem like really quailty young man. Yeah I think both will get an offer soon. Why not?
Turd Ferguson (Apr 29, 2004 1:11:45 PM)
Gary who is the most underrated play in the state this year, who do you see coming out of nowhere to get that so treasured buckeye offer?
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:15:42 PM)
Hi Turd...On that last question you asked I did answer that I did not know but Kirk answered it better. Anyway the most underrated player in the state is Tyrell Sutton by far and the player who might come out of nowhere to get an offer could be Alex Daniels. I was really impressed with him at the Nike combine. Another guy whose name is never mentioned is Bryan Williams from Buchtel. He's an exceptional athlete that can play some pretty good football. He could be surprise this year that no one is talking about. I don't think he'll get an OSU offer but he'll be out there prominently.
tal (Apr 29, 2004 1:17:02 PM)
which quarterbacks do you feel will get hard looks?
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:19:45 PM)
Hi tal...if that hand written letter from Jim Tressel meant anything, I think that quarterback from Illinois will get a good look. Again I'm not convinced they take any quarterback this year unless it's a handpicked guy like this kid by Jim Tressel.
rbuck (Apr 29, 2004 1:20:09 PM)
Who were some players that really stood out at the spring game?
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:25:37 PM)
From my vantage point...I kept seeing Donte Whitner around the football. E.J. Underwood had a large day. My man Tony Pittman played great. I thought Richard and Frost played really well on the D-Line. Sian Cotton showed some things. Thomas Matthews is really trying to earn some playing time. I saw T.J. Downing containing Simon Fraser on a couple of occasions so that's impressive. We need more SOB's on the O-Line and I think Downing can be a guy like that. Ashton Youboty starred in the game. Now we need to heal the injuries.
Helpinghand (Apr 29, 2004 1:25:44 PM)
Gary, How can we let the fastest LB, with the most tackles in 2 games, sit on the bench at the start of a game? (ok, Kickoffs don't count)
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:29:35 PM)
Hi helpinghand...I hear you about Thomas Matthews and I just mentioned him in the previous answer. I hear some of that Florida bias in you on that question and that's all good. But that's just how deep we are across the board at Linebacker. How can we not get Marcus Freeman more playing time as well. There is just not enough positions. Carpenter and Hawk are mainstays, period. I think D'Andrea will get first crack in the middle in the fall but I like Kerr and Schlegel as well. Let's hope they all can get enough playing time to stay happy and help us win games. Nice to hear from you HH. Hope to meet you someday!
Seabus (Apr 29, 2004 1:29:43 PM)
Is there a linebacker in the State that you or Duane like alot? Phillips, maybe BJ Travers from Westlake? Do any of these guys get offers? Do we even need a LB in this class?
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:32:44 PM)
Hi seabus...at this point in time there is not one linebacker in the state that I'm enamored with. I thought Brandon Long out of GlenOak looked fantastic at the Nike combine. No one really has caught my attention yet at linebacker but now is the time I go hunting around the state to look at players and I hope I do find someone I really like.
Turd Ferguson (Apr 29, 2004 1:33:33 PM)
gary do you have any thoughts on Rico McCoy , he seems to be a plaer and looks good in that scarlet and grey
Turd Ferguson (Apr 29, 2004 1:33:36 PM)
do you think we have a good shot at landing cushing and mccoy?
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:36:26 PM)
I don't know much about McCoy or Cushing right now ... sorry. Maybe our new receivers coach has some good contacts with the Cushing people so that could be a plus. He just doesn't seem really into OSU yet.
GoBucks25 (Apr 29, 2004 1:36:32 PM)
Does Jay Richardson have a chance at stealing Mike Kudla's projected starting DE spot.. or you could see maybe just using him in obvious passing situations and keeping Kudla in to help stop the run...?
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:39:56 PM)
Hi GoBucks25...no I don't think Richardson has a chance at stealing Kudla's position going into the fall but yes I could seeing him being used successfully in some passing situations this year. The thing about Kudla is that he's just going to wear you down and eventually make a big play or two because of his work ethic and desire. He's a monster in that sense. I think Richardson and even Frost might have more of an innate ability to get to the quarterback but I think it will be really hard to unseat Mike Kudla who has been groomed by Will Smith the past couple of years.
osufan25 (Apr 29, 2004 1:40:16 PM)
Hey Gary! Now that Javon has received a qualifying test score do you see a OSU offer in the near future. I've seen him play and I think he's a special back.
osufan25 (Apr 29, 2004 1:40:19 PM)
Gary, Do you think OSU will offer Mr. Harrison from CJ now that Jamario O'neal is shopping around. I hear that Brandon put on a show at the nike camp. Maybe they could get both and move O'Neal to WR or S.
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:44:08 PM)
Hi osufan...first of all...let me repeat...Jamario is going nowhere other than to The Ohio State University. With that being said. I saw Ringer play as well and I think he's a really special back also. Yes I see him getting an offer by camp if his grades are where they need to be. I like Harrison as well. Looks like he's put together well and he has lights out speed. It's hard to say with there being so many talented DBs on the roster but he's a speed guy that will be looked at by every major school in the Midwest and he wants to become a Buckeye. So I say offer Ringer and Harrison at camp. Just do it!
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:44:54 PM)
BTW, someone who knows at the Nike Camp thinks, as do I, that Jamario will be a safety at OSU and not a corner.
GoBucks25 (Apr 29, 2004 1:47:12 PM)
I think Tyree and Sims played really in the Spring game and were a big part of why Zwick and Pittman had successful days. What do you think the chances are of Tyree starting over Kne or Datish (the projected starters).. ?
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:50:20 PM)
Hi GoBucks...You know I noticed Tyree a lot in some of my photos that I took as he was leading the way through the holes for Ross and Pittman so that was a positive. I noticed him yes. I expect Sims to play well as do I with Mangold. I'm disappointed that Barton isn't in the mix but what can you do with an injury like that. I could see Tyree overtaking Datish before Kne but I'm hoping that Datish can take advantage of the injury to Olds and claim a starting spot of his own. I think Tyree will be in the mix somewhere.
BuckeyeDave (Apr 29, 2004 1:50:33 PM)
I heard a sports announcer say that the most important physical attribute an athlete can have is foot speed. Your thoughts?
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:53:13 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...you can't coach speed as they say! Yes speed is very important...you can over come a lot of shortcomings with pure speed. It's definitely a bonus to have. I think the mental part is so very important at the college game because unlike in the pros you do have a chance to be a lot better than the guy you line up across from and if you know all you can about him and the opponent, you can have a tremendous advantage. But I like fast guys!
osufan25 (Apr 29, 2004 1:53:22 PM)
Thanks Gary and GoBucks25! That's what I wanted to hear. Two more questions for ya Gary. Is OSU in hot pursuit of any OOS guys? I would love to have King, Williams, Wells Udofia and that big DT from down south. What other O-line guys to you see them going after this year.
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 1:58:17 PM)
Hi osufan...I'm the last guy to know a lot about OOS guys, that 's an area that guys like Duane do such a tremendous job in. And if you read the current Ohio High, you'll Duane and the rest of the staff do a pretty good job with in state guys as well. I like king a lot and I have plans to try and visit him this spring and well as the two big linemen from Butler, Pa. I think I can get to both schools in one road trip. I've heard a lot of good things about Williams the receiver from people who have already seen him in person. Wells sounds like he's a really good scat back type talent and we have a shot at him. But really I wait until Duane focuses in on OOS guys we have a real shot at and then I try to find out more about them from there.
GaryHousteau (Apr 29, 2004 2:01:41 PM)
We started a bit early and we'll end early as well. Thanks everyone for chatting. Have a great day and enjoy the nice weather this weekend. Thanks Kirk! Go Bucks!
