Ok, Duane's here. Feel free to fire away with questions
buckeyenole (May 25, 2004 1:07:34 PM)
Of the QB's that have expressed interest in the Bucks, who do you like the best, Duane? Is there anyone under the radar that we should know about?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:09:39 PM)
I like Stull the best. Delle Donne is a bit ponderous and I am not really excited about his level of competition. I know the Buckeyes have an eye on Doug Snider from Walsh Jesuit. I like him too.
russiabuck (May 25, 2004 1:09:48 PM)
Hi Duane, How would you compare Denlinger to Pitcock?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:10:25 PM)
I wouldn't. Pitcock is a power player with speed. Denlinger is a speed player with some power.
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:11:06 PM)
He is more like Patterson if you want a comparison.
edbuck51 (May 25, 2004 1:12:03 PM)
Thanks for joining us Duane. I really believe the Buckeyes need to get an Elite 11 QB no later than signing day 2006. Do you think either Hartline or Schlitcher will reach that level?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:13:21 PM)
Great question and it allows me the opportunity to mention that Hartline is already getting offers. Pittsburgh, WVa and kent have already offered him. I am trying to confirm an offer from Purdue.
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:14:30 PM)
I think both are on track and lets not forget Rudy Kirbus. That is a great QB class.
landrover (May 25, 2004 1:14:41 PM)
Duane, there has been a lot of talk today about Ryan Williams from CA. Have you heard anything about a possible offer?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:16:00 PM)
I am not really up on the out of staters just yet.
buckeyenole (May 25, 2004 1:16:14 PM)
On the topic of Qb's, do you feel the Bauserman situation has been clarified any, with the pro scouts seeming to back off?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:18:17 PM)
I don't think it has. I think it depends on what kind of money they offer. Based on what has been said about him when he committed and what is being said now, I see no difference. It will come down to where he is drafted and how much money is on the table.
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:19:47 PM)
One thing to keep in mind about any player evaluations in any sport is you hear about the negatives alot of the time. Based on the last report you would think Bauserman was not a major league prospect at all then he is projected to go as high as the 3rd round.
Mr. Ferguson (May 25, 2004 1:18:25 PM)
Duane any kids from pickerington or reynoldsburgh to watch out for this year?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:20:27 PM)
No seniors. Justin Boren is a nice junior to be OL and there is a former Buckeyes son who will be a sophmore that is lookign like a prospect. I can't recall his name off the top of my head.
russiabuck (May 25, 2004 1:20:38 PM)
Will Brandon Harrison be a buckeye.
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:21:32 PM)
I think Harrison to the Buckeyes is likely with an offer but it is not for sure.
edbuck51 (May 25, 2004 1:21:36 PM)
Will the Buckeyes take more than 10 in state kids in the upcoming class?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:23:09 PM)
I think it is likely. I feel like Denlinger, Myers-White and Hartline will be Buckeyes and Harrison as a good possible. Grades could tell the tale.
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:25:55 PM)
If not for grades I think we have 10 now with Curtis Smith, Antwon Hight and Kendell Davis.
IzzyTizzy (May 25, 2004 1:23:25 PM)
What about the QB...Robb S.?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:24:30 PM)
I have seen Schoenhoft once. Maybe it was a bad game. I think he looks like John Navarre who I was never impressed with.
edbuck51 (May 25, 2004 1:25:16 PM)
Are you familiar with the kicker from St.Ed's. Did the Bucks miss out on one here?
Guest (May 25, 2004 1:25:21 PM)
Duane how would you compare the Ohio kicker (his name escapes me) to Pettrey and did OSU know about him last year?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:30:33 PM)
I don't think we need a kicker in this class.
Trey (May 25, 2004 1:30:49 PM)
do you see them offering a bunch of scholarships at the senior camp or will they hold off until after the high school season?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:32:47 PM)
I think it depends on performances. I think there is a short list of players on the cusp of being offered and camp will tell if they are offered.
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:34:26 PM)
The ones I look for are hartline, Harrison and Daniels.
Mr. Ferguson (May 25, 2004 1:33:46 PM)
duane you get 2 out of state recruits this year, who do you take? (ohio state has to have some sort of chance with them)
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:37:23 PM)
James McKinney and Doug Worthington.
IzzyTizzy (May 25, 2004 1:38:42 PM)
Any idea on the next RB who might get offered? How many do we take in this class?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:40:57 PM)
No clue as to who might get offered. I have not seen enough of the national crop on film to make a determination of class strength but it doesn't look strong. I think we wait to see how Haw and Pittman play before we look to see if we need help in this class.
tulsabuck (May 25, 2004 1:41:03 PM)
How do the Buckeye players feel about Mo Clarett? Do some resent Geiger? Does there seem to be a significant contingent that want him back? Any rumors on how Clarett feels about Buckeyes?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:41:57 PM)
This keeps coming up. Fans want Clarett back. Nobody else does.
tsteele316 (May 25, 2004 1:43:05 PM)
Has Denlinger been discussed yet? If not, what are your feelings on his final 2 and OSU's chances?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:44:01 PM)
I think Denlinger is a Buckeye. I am not concerned.
Kirk (May 25, 2004 1:43:55 PM)
(Based on the reaction to Duane's last comment I can safely say that SOME fans MAY want Clarett back, others don't :) )
edbuck51 (May 25, 2004 1:44:19 PM)
I know it's early, but has Chris Wells been offered by the Bucks?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:46:22 PM)
No, Wells has not been offered yet.
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:46:25 PM)
I have avoided getting into the Clarett thing but it won't go away. There is a thread on the board again about Ohio State trying to bring him back. Maurice Clarett will NEVER play for Ohio State again. I am 100% sure, and nobody is going to lose sleep over except fans, or as Kirk says, some fans.
Mr. Ferguson (May 25, 2004 1:46:47 PM)
duane what do YOU make of the o'neal stuff lately is he for sure a buckeye. why this looking around interest?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:48:37 PM)
It happens every year with Glenville. Coach Ginn is not interested in getting as many kids as possible scholarships. He wants them all to get scholarships. His big time players need to let schools know they are still in the game so schools will keep coming and hopefully take a look at someone else.
russiabuck (May 25, 2004 1:49:02 PM)
How would you compare or contrast Haw and Ringer?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:49:57 PM)
No comparison. They have completely different styles and bodies.
edbuck51 (May 25, 2004 1:50:06 PM)
Have you seen the RB from St.Thomas Aquinas in Louisville?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:51:38 PM)
I really like Underwood. There was a question about his speed, even though he says he runs 4.4. He runs with power and breaks tackles. Runs over tacklers. Goes out of his way to take them on. I love him. Too bad he is going to miss the year.
tsteele316 (May 25, 2004 1:51:53 PM)
do you think osu stays in state for another OL, or will they try to go OOS to fill that need?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:54:57 PM)
Keep the name Robert Brewster in mind. I know they like him and I would offer him. He is the perfect compliment to Boone. I put him at RT and run behind him and Cordle all day. Other than him the staff seems to like Zack Hennis. I am not sold on him. Other than those 2 I think we got out of state. I think we are looking around right now. I have not heard this but I would not be surprised if they take stock now on out of state possibles and decide whether to offer Brewster at camp. That is what I would do.
buckeyenole (May 25, 2004 1:55:10 PM)
What have you heard about Forcier and the kid from IL at QB? Do the Bucks pass and wait on next year's class? Is it THAT good?
Duane (May 25, 2004 1:57:06 PM)
New name to me. I don't know. I think it depends on Bauserman. If he comes in I think we wait. If he doesn't I think we get more aggressive about bringing in a QB this year regardless of the quality of next years class. That would be 2 years in a row not bringing in a QB. I don't see that happening.
IzzyTizzy (May 25, 2004 1:57:35 PM)
Did the situation with Pettrey change? What was with the recent news about that other kicker that might gray shirt?
edbuck51 (May 25, 2004 1:57:42 PM)
I guess I was thinking since it sounds like we are getting a kicker from Boston area, there would not be room for another, and no offer for the St.Ed kid. Are we getting the New England guy?
Duane (May 25, 2004 2:00:22 PM)
I am not following you. I have not heard anything about this situation.
landrover (May 25, 2004 2:00:46 PM)
You mentioned McKinney, do you really think we have a chance? Where do you see him playing OL or DL?
Duane (May 25, 2004 2:03:37 PM)
I see McKinney as an OL. I think we have an SEC kid looking north, we have a history of doing well in Kentucky, we are closer and our depth chart is much more open.
Mr. Ferguson (May 25, 2004 2:04:11 PM)
are we sincerely interested in Rob Schoenhoft?
Duane (May 25, 2004 2:05:36 PM)
I have seen nothing that tells me we are overly interested in Schoenhoft. He is coming to camp here so that could change.
edbuck51 (May 25, 2004 2:05:42 PM)
Do you think the Buckeyes are actively pursuing a big stud fullback for the upcoming class?
Duane (May 25, 2004 2:07:05 PM)
No. I think they like White, and that is why they took Johnson last year.
edbuck51 (May 25, 2004 2:07:17 PM)
Duane. Do you actually get to go to the Buckeye games in the Shoe?
Duane (May 25, 2004 2:08:23 PM)
As as guest? No.
Mr. Ferguson (May 25, 2004 2:08:32 PM)
Duane if i went back to school for my masters or MBA could i walk on to the football squad?
Duane (May 25, 2004 2:09:41 PM)
To my knowledge anyone can walk-on.
IzzyTizzy (May 25, 2004 2:09:45 PM)
Could you give a quick rating 1-2-3 on your top WR's in state?
Duane (May 25, 2004 2:12:28 PM)
The jury is still out. Let me give you 5. Manningham and Hartline are 1 and 2. After that you get Massey, Mike Chambers and Brian Robiskie. Massey has the speed but if either Chambers or Robiskie runs great cat camp they are going to jump into the elite rankings. Both are big, athletic and very talented.
BuckeyeDave (May 25, 2004 2:12:36 PM)
I'm pretty sure the coaching staff has to invite you ti try out as a walk-on.
Kirk (May 25, 2004 2:12:50 PM)
One more question for Duane and then we'll let him go today:
edbuck51 (May 25, 2004 2:12:54 PM)
Where do you rank this high school senior class compared to the last three or four?
Duane (May 25, 2004 2:13:15 PM)
Those are recruited walk-ons. That is different.
Duane (May 25, 2004 2:15:52 PM)
It is a good class but not a great class. 2001 is the recent benchmark. It is not that good. The DBs are special at both corner and safety. There is good depth on the OL and at WR but the QBs are lacking, we are still waiting on the LBs to really step up and outside of Denlinger and Hight the DLs leave alot to be desired. No TEs and the RBs have too many questions.
slimkid (May 25, 2004 2:16:31 PM)
I don't know about football, but in many sports, there are open try outs for anyone interested in becoming a walk-on. After a certain length of time (2-4 weeks, say) coaches make cuts: some are invited to remain on the team, while others are not.
Kirk (May 25, 2004 2:16:36 PM)
Thanks so much for joining us today Duane. Everyone, thanks for stopping by and stay tuned for a transcript to be posted shortly!
Duane (May 25, 2004 2:17:49 PM)
See you all on the boards!!
