Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau

We have a transcript of today's chat with Gary Housteau now posted. Recruiting has been the favorite topic of most fans recently, and that's what we talked about today.

osubucks221979 (May 27, 2004 1:08:13 PM)
Gary... What do you think about Curtis Smith? Will we offer? Will he be another Glenville Buckeye?

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 1:10:36 PM)
That's a long name there osubucks221979 but anyway...I just spoke to Curtis this week at Glenville and he seems to think everything is going along fine academically and if that is the case...I think he will get an offer and he will be a Buckeye. I look for O'Neal, Lenix and Curtis Smith to eventually all be in the fold.

wolfbuddy (May 27, 2004 1:10:38 PM)
gary, when do the elite 11 results come out, and what are the chances a recruit with OSU interest (stull, delle donne, etc.) is named to it?

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 1:13:40 PM)
Hi wolfbuddy...I'm not aware of any certain time frame for the elite 11 camp but it should be coming up very soon. I haven't the slightest idea of who would be involved in that as of now but I'd like to Stull be name as a participant. I really like this kid but I'm certain if he's a candidate or not for that. Will try to find out though. I would like to think we are interested in at least one or two guys that will be going to the camp. We shall find out soon.

edbuck51 (May 27, 2004 1:13:43 PM)
Hey Gary. Have you expressed your thoughts on Alex Daniels?

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 1:17:56 PM)
Hi edbuck...I was impressed with his physical stature first off at the Nike camp. He definitely passes the look test. I watched him work out some with the receivers and I was very impressed with his leaping ability and his agility. They were working in confined areas doing their individual drills. Combine that with his speed and I think he would be a tremendous candidate as a wide out. Obviously he thinks he's a wideout because that's the position he participated in at the camp and they tell you to go to the position you feel you will need to work on. They give you the option. Real solid prospect in my opinion.

buckeyenole (May 27, 2004 1:18:14 PM)
Is Curt Smith more an LB or is he DE all the way? If he's a DE, will they take another one with the Williams kid from CA, allegedly this morning, already in the fold?

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 1:21:35 PM)
Hi buckeyenole...IMHO Curtis Smith is first off a defensive end in high school a la Kenny Peterson with the skill and agility and quickness and toughness to move inside at the next level if warranted. He doesn't have the requisite LB speed, especially with the corps we have on this team. I project him long term at 6-feet-2 as a monster inside defensive tackle.

Kirk (May 27, 2004 1:21:38 PM)
osubucks221979 asked "Gary... What do you see happening with Ringer and Harrison? I live in Dayton and get to see them play. Both would look great in Scarlet and Gray."

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 1:26:14 PM)
I haven't really counted numbers of schollies available still but when you see talent and playmakers you have to find room for them on your team. I like Ringer a lot. Rick Shepas of Massillon thought he was the best back he faced all last year and he went against a bunch of good ones. I also think Tyrell Sutton is the bomb from Akron Hoban. Can't take both of them. I'll take Harrison's 4.25 speed any day of the week month or year. In my opinion you can't go wrong taking either of them. I hope we get them both but at least we have to get Harrison.

edbuck51 (May 27, 2004 1:26:18 PM)
Do you think the Bucks will sign more than 10 Ohio players in next year's class?

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 1:27:53 PM)
Sure do edbuck...I'm big on instate players. You're looking at possibly five from Glenville and DCJ alone. Boone and Cordle give you seven and we haven't even started yet. I say as many as 12 or 13 is likely.

tsteele316 (May 27, 2004 1:32:15 PM)
gary, have you seen lemming's rundown of ohio kids that he put out recently? if so, your thoughts? I find it to be slightly innaccurate to say the least.

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 1:33:15 PM)
I haven't seen it tsteele316 can you rephrase your question to include some of his insights?

Wizzle (May 27, 2004 1:33:28 PM)
Gary, another internet source said that Denlinger is very close to deciding probably by the beginning of June and it looks like the bucks have the upper hand, do u know if there is any truth to that??

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 1:35:55 PM)
Hi Wizzle...I have heard from a couple of independent sources that it is just a matter of formality at this time. I haven't spoken with Denlinger directly myself but I'm hearing from multiple sources that it's only a matter of time that he gives the official word. Him and AMW are two more solid Ohio kids that you can for certain add to the list. Smile.

tsteele316 (May 27, 2004 1:36:06 PM)
would it seem odd that lemming said there are no superstars in ohio this year, and left mario manningham off of his list of prominent ohio players? that's just to start with.

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 1:40:59 PM)
I would call O'Neal and Boone superstars right off the bat and we have both of them in the fold. Manningham is another superstar in my opinion. He's extremely gifted. I guess all the rest don't fit his criteria but I'm excited about guys like Denlinger and Myers-White and you have to call Tyrell Sutton a prep superstar whether you want to or not. Here's a fine young man with solid academics and he's going to have close to or more than 9,000 career yards. I'd say those are some pretty good players. Freddie Lenix could be another potential superstar at running back or linebacker this year. I'm happy with the very top end of the talent pool in Ohio. Another kid that would be a top player if he had his academics is the Davis kid from Alliance. Tons of talent there.

osubucks221979 (May 27, 2004 1:41:34 PM)
Do you think Brian Hartline is a camp offer? Will he be an impact player?

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 1:46:03 PM)
I'm starting to think that Brian Hartline will be a camp offer. This kid is all but waiting to put his name on an OSU football scholarship and it would be a tremendous thing if that were to happen. He's got all the skill in the world and if he fills out just a bit more, he could become quite the player at the next level. I look forward to seeing him and others at the Regionals in Austintown this weekend. I'm not a betting man but I'd say the odds are good that he's a camp offer. Will he be an impact player? I still want to see how good he really is this year before I go out on a limb but the ability and work ethic is very much there to become an impact player as a wide out.

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 1:46:05 PM)
I like his brother very much as well.

wolfbuddy (May 27, 2004 1:46:28 PM)
Gary...Are there any prospects in the northwest ohio area? I know my hometown of Toeldo isn't known as a big talent pool, but are there some guys up there that are going to get some good offers (maybe OSU)?

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 1:51:04 PM)
Hi wolfbuddy...what's with the dearth of big-time talent in the Toledo area. I went to college in Adrian, MI..D III for football, and I had a lot of buddies at school from the Toledo area and for whatever reason, they don't export big time talent. The linebacker from Maumee about 10 years ago was one of the more prominent names I can remember...what was his name? I guess the fullback from Delphos is a candidate but I don't know if that's the Toledo area or not. There is a linebacker up there from Orange High School I believe who is creating some interest in himself but other than tell me!

tsteele316 (May 27, 2004 1:51:36 PM)
how many receivers do you think we will take? how many ohio kids will we offer?

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 1:55:49 PM)
I like the depth of the receiving pool in Ohio alone than you can sprinkle in one or two others as well. I would say ...forget Manningham... Hartline, Orton, Robiskie, Chambers, Stross and Daniels are all top shelf quality. OOS I like Williams and Rouse and I'm sure there are others. I believe we will get Hartline, Daniels and Orton possibly... no more than three unless you can move Daniels to another position. I said before we might land as many as 12 or 13 Ohio kids this year and it's not a class overloaded with talent.

ToledoBUCKnutty (May 27, 2004 1:55:58 PM)
Hey Gary...Hey Kirk! Thanks for taking our questions and comments. Pretty cool to get a highly touted kid out of Cali eh? Do you think that might stir up some OSU hype out there or does it not really work that way?

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 1:59:26 PM)
Hi Toledo...I like the pickup and I'm eager to learn more about him but I wouldn't get too carried away with an deluge of Cali kids as a result of this. I'm happy with Ohio and PA and FL on a regular basis. Sounds like a good prospect though.

osubucks221979 (May 27, 2004 1:59:50 PM)
Who is the receiver/corner prospect from Middletown that Tom Lemming is high on? His was a new name to me?

osubucks221979 (May 27, 2004 1:59:55 PM)
Kirk... the kid from Middletown in my other question's name is Andre Amos

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 2:02:26 PM)
Yes Amos is his name and I completely forgot about him...I've heard that OSU does have some interest in him but I'm not aware of him at this point other than I know of him. I hope that he will be camping with OSU in June. It's almost June already... North South and then Big 33 and then the season is upon us. Wow...

buckeyenole (May 27, 2004 2:02:52 PM)
Gary, Have you seen Sanchez, Forcier or Christensen? If so, do you like them better than Stull?

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 2:04:18 PM)
I saw Forcier at the Nike camp and even chatted with him, neither him or Stull were of the physical specimen variety. I watched stull as much as any of the QB

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 2:04:21 PM)
QBs there and I was impressed with him.

wolfbuddy (May 27, 2004 2:04:46 PM)
Gary... what quarterback is on OSU's radar the strongest? who do the really want

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 2:07:49 PM)
I'm still not convinced entirely that we will take a QB this year... I like Stull to be honest but I have to believe the staff likes Christensen very much as well. I wouldn't mind taking at an extra look at the Cincinnati QB during the year to see how he performs. Right now I'd be happy with Stull if we take a QB and he could be had very easily. So early on I'll say Stull but that could change with the wind.

riverwatchbucknut (May 27, 2004 2:08:02 PM)
gary just wanna say thanks for the updates and being able to get ahold of. seems like alot of player updates are nothing but restating information we already know

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 2:09:55 PM)
Hi riverwatch... I always try to find something new that even I didn't know when I do an update on a kid and I figure that if I didn't know it, then there are probably many of you reading it that might not know it either. I have a great update on Lenix coming soon. It's a lot of fun doing them. Thanks for the kudos.

osufan25 (May 27, 2004 2:10:09 PM)
What is the latest on Javon Ringer? I didn't see anything about him in Duane's transcript the other day. Is OSU still looking at him?

GaryHousteau (May 27, 2004 2:13:24 PM)
Hi osufan25...I would have to think that Ringer is still high on OSU's list. Grades were/are an issue but from what I understand he scored high on his ACT recently and should be in decent shape. I know that Ohio State is heading more toward Notre Dame's standards and not Michigan State's so that is not making the staff very excited I'm told. But you have to grab Ringer or Sutton in state this year. Both too good to ignore despite smallish in size.

Kirk (May 27, 2004 2:14:06 PM)
