Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau

We took a step away from the basketball controversy today to chat about a little football and recruiting with Gary Housteau. Check out the transcript posted now.

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:05:46 PM)
Hi everyone...I'm here...Let's chat's chat. Track, recruiting and the North South Classic are topics on the agenda today.

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:07:01 PM)
Before you ask...yes I think Boone and O'Neal are and will be solid in their commitment to Ohio State.

edbuck51 (Jun 10, 2004 1:06:27 PM)
Was Ginn Jr. the most impressive athlete at the state track meet?

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:08:25 PM)
Hi Edbuck...Ginn was just unbelievable at the meet as anyone who was there can attest to. But the most amazing thing about it from my perspective is how he turned it all off and became little Teddy again after the meet was over. Smiling and joking and enjoying life. Very impressive yes on the track though...yes.

edbuck51 (Jun 10, 2004 1:08:34 PM)
Are you able to attend the camps coming up?

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:09:48 PM)
I'm working on getting free for some part of the camps if my work schedule will allow it. It's tough being in Columbus for two days for the North-South Classic the week before. But I'll do what I can do. I want to very much.

edbuck51 (Jun 10, 2004 1:10:53 PM)
Were you surprised to hear Schoenhoft had an OSU offer? Were you surprised to hear he had been invited to the Elite 11 camp? Does this say anything about the overall talent at QB in the country this year?

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:14:22 PM)
I've heard nothing but good things about Schoenhoft. I was even talking to some southern Ohio people at the track meet who had good things to say about Schoenhoft. I wish I watched him at the Nike camp. My focus was on other players at the time and I completely forgot him. I think it's great we offered. I'm always a proponent of going instate first. I want Ohio to always keep their best players if they want to be Buckeyes. If he's Elite 11 material, then that's even better. If he wants competition he will have it at Ohio State. I wish him luck and if winds up at OSU then I have no problem with that. He might not be high profile, but he's from Ohio and that's all right by me.

tsteele316 (Jun 10, 2004 1:14:31 PM)
gary do you know of any out of staters that will be attending camp?

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:17:29 PM)
Hi Tsteele...out of state is not my specialty at all but I do think guys like King and Stull might be coming to camp. I would have to research it at this point, just as you would. I'm sure there are some major impact guys coming but I'll just wait and see when they get here. Sorry.

bucknut13 (Jun 10, 2004 1:17:35 PM)
Gary, I am not sure if you read Steve's (or your - which you would know about) interview with Hartline, but does he seem to feel an offer is imminent at camp? Thanks.

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:19:50 PM)
Hi Bucknut...I spoke with Hartline as well at the Regional meet and then a week later at the state meet and I get the impression from him that he believes an offer is imminent indeed. He just needs to take care of business at camp and he might or probably will come away from there with an offer. I really like the poise and athletic ability of Hartline. Very confident in himself and a quality kid to boot.

Duck Of Death (Jun 10, 2004 1:19:58 PM)
How would like to see are starting O line of Boone, Mitchum, Akers, Person, and Cordle in a few years?

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:23:40 PM)
Sounds great but I think you're forgetting about Barton who is only a redshirt freshman this year. Sure the possibilites seem endless with this next group of lineman in the pipeline. You might have forgotten the best one...Jon Skinner. What quality hard working good young men they all are. Throw in Hoobler and Nicol at tight end and the future up front looks outstanding. Great talent in the pipeline.

edbuck51 (Jun 10, 2004 1:24:21 PM)
Players level of interest in the Buckeyes ebb and flow. We get real excited when they like, and bummed when they don't. Do you think fans of other programs see it as much as we do? It just seems like we have to fight really hard to get these kids comitted, while other schools seem to have 5*s fall in their laps. Perception, or reality?

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:28:33 PM)
I would guess the situation is similar all across the country. Buckeye fans only know about the 4 and 5 star players across the country which we all tend to monitor. I bet it's pretty competitive in Florida for instance. I would like to see more Justin Zwick's, meaninig guys who want to step up and be loud and proud and say Ohio State and start working to bring other top players in the fold as well. We're all pretty rabid fans here so we see it and follow it and notice it a little more or the same as other top programs I believe.

skeelo (Jun 10, 2004 1:28:37 PM)
have you seen and talked with cordle what would you say his true measurables looked like to you?

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:32:12 PM)
I've only seen him one time and have not spoken with him. He snuck up on my radar...I didn't really know about him until Duane started talking about him. He's not as physically imposing as a Mitchum for instance but he's a solid looking individual. I'm looking forward to seeing him play this year either in person or on film. Everything I read about him and heard has been really positive though.

edbuck51 (Jun 10, 2004 1:32:22 PM)
Did Boone participate in the state track meet?

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:33:04 PM) would not have missed him if he was at the facility.

Duck Of Death (Jun 10, 2004 1:33:13 PM)
With the talent that we are piping into the O line we should see some big seasons from our RB's. Break out the crystal ball and tell us who will bring home the Heisman for us over the next few years.

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:37:54 PM)
Hi Duck of Death, I'm really happy with Pittman and Haw to be honest with you. Pittman was even more impressive this spring than I thought that he would be. Pittman is going to be special. He's tough and he a bit of a slasher and he can go the distance. Haw just looks to have tremendous ability. He's very fast, he has a low center of gravity, he can run between the tackles and he's got a great head on his shoulders. Both young guys do. I think both will be very exciting and very productive backs in JT's offense at OSU. If Kennedy is everything that HH says he is then we're really in for a treat. You have to be tough and break tackles first and foremost.

edbuck51 (Jun 10, 2004 1:38:02 PM)
Do you think Groom and Sander were a product of great coaching, or did they just have talent? The reason I ask is that the punting this spring was scary, and hopefully great coaching will help that area this fall.

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:40:36 PM)
It's amazing how good Groom and Sander were. I don't think we can be as fortunate to have that same kind of success again for the short term. We've been blessed to have two really good punters back to back. I'm hoping for another to be around for about four years now but it might take a season or two to find him. I think it's more than just coaching unfortunately. It's the resolve of the individual doing the punting.

edbuck51 (Jun 10, 2004 1:40:44 PM)
Did you think Jamario would win the 100m before the injury?

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:43:11 PM)
Perkins beat a healthy O'Neal and Lenix the week before at the regionals so it wasn't a given. I was looking forward to a one-two finish with O'Neal and Lenix so I was a bit disappointed. But I'll take my chances with O'Neal any day be it in football or track. The same with Lenix.

skeelo (Jun 10, 2004 1:43:19 PM)
gary or kirk how is it we have a recruiting coordinator from middletown and mich. gets to him before we do in evaluating him? that is of course andre amos.

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:46:31 PM)
You're not being fair to Peterson who is just getting into his role as "recruiting coordinator." I'm sure Peterson was aware of Amos at Miami of Ohio and he should have a relationship going already, but I'm thinking that maybe he came in and sold JT on Amos first.

Planeteer (Jun 10, 2004 1:46:37 PM)
What kind of role do you see Ted Ginn playing this fall?

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:50:49 PM)
Returning the opening kickoff against Cincinnati. I know JT always defers on the coin toss but he should everything in his power to get Ginn the football on the opening kickoff of the season. Period. Let Ginn jump in and get his feet wet right off the bat. Eventually Ginn will get comfortable on defense and will see time on the field but he will also be used sparingly on offense because of his playmaking ability. Remember there won't be many if any big plays being made by receivers anywhere near the beginning of the season. You haven't seen conservative yet like you will during the non-conference portion of the schedule. Ginn may run a reverse or two if anything but there won't be many big plays in the air until we're well into the season.

rbuck (Jun 10, 2004 1:50:53 PM)
I think Kirk (not sure if it was him) said that he would like to see Carpenter move to end??? Do you see that happening?

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:53:00 PM)
Hi rbuck...leave the nastiest and toughest SOB on defense right where he is. Carpenter is big time at linebacker...right where he is.

skeelo (Jun 10, 2004 1:53:06 PM)
is their anyone who would like to see roy hall play some tight end for tosu this year?to replace the void of irrizary as that second tight end.

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:56:24 PM)
I would think Marcel Frost would be a better alternative than Hall for tight end because he's played the position. But I think they know Frost is going to be a big time talent on defense eventually. I don't think Hall would adjust to a change to tight end very well either. I just don't see it happening although I think it has some merit. Caldwell needs to step it up and be the backside TE until Nicol or Hoobler are able to man the position.

planeteer (Jun 10, 2004 1:56:25 PM)
why take one of our only experienced receivers and move him to TE?

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 1:58:53 PM)
Hi planeteer I wouldn't exactly call Roy Hall an experienced receiver just yet. They do need him to step up no doubt at the position. I see a golden opportunity for Devin Jordan, Tony G. and the two freshmen but Hall needs to be the man to step up to complement Holmes.

HH (Jun 10, 2004 1:58:55 PM)
Is there anyone you are looking forward to seeing at camp?

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 2:02:20 PM)
Hi HH. I want to see Justin King if he's coming and I want to see Cushing, the NJ linebacker if he's coming. That's two names. McCoy from DC if he's coming. Anyone else from your neck of the woods HH that I should look out for? E-mail me at

planeteer (Jun 10, 2004 2:02:30 PM)
Who starts at the Mike this fall? Any chance D'Andrea is used more at rush end if Schlegel wins the job?

GaryHousteau (Jun 10, 2004 2:05:43 PM)
Don't count Mike D'Andrea out of anything. And John Kerr for that matter. Sure I'll concede right not that Schlegel may be the starter week one but D'Andrea will be a force this year on defense and I think it will be at Mike linebacker. What a dilemma to have. Three great ones.

Kirk (Jun 10, 2004 2:06:05 PM)
All right everyone, thanks for stopping by today. A transcript should be up shortly. Steve will be in to chat tomorrow.
