Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau

It was another session of recruiting chat today as Gary Housteau joined us for a club chat session. We have a transcript posted now.

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 1:04:14 PM)
Hi everyone...if Kirk's around we can get things started. Start sending in questions now if you'd like.

browndawg (Jun 17, 2004 1:04:18 PM)
Hi Gary! Gary who is the player to watch out for in Ohio that isn't getting a lot of love right now? Do you have a update if you'll be able to make it to the camp? Do you know if their will be a list of the players attending the camp posted before or after the camp? Thanks

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 1:08:13 PM)
Hi Browndawg...I'm going to take a flier and say Greg Keys of Bellevue High School. First of all his statistics are impressive and I was looking at him at the state track meet and he's put together pretty well. I'd say him and Brandon Long Long of GlenOak High School are two guys that are going to rise on the recruiting lists this fall. As far as camp goes, I'm going to try to make at least one session I hope...not certain. And I'm guessing we will start compiling names of guys headed to some of the camps, mainly next week. And you're welcome! Smile!

themainbuck (Jun 17, 2004 1:08:19 PM)
when you watch tape of Lydell Ross do you see the false step he has before he enters the hole. He holds up, losses about a half second. Do you agree?

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 1:11:38 PM)
hi mainbuck...there does seem to be a bit of hesitation but I've never closely looked at it on tape to make that determination. The Buckeyes will need consistency from Ross this year because their passing game just might have us wanting Craig Krenzel back under center, especially in the beginning part of the year. Sorry Craig...I love ya! Ross needs a senior year like Jonathan Wells...bottom line. We have to expect that from him and no less.

osufan25 (Jun 17, 2004 1:11:46 PM)
Hey Gary! Will Javon Ringer be attending OSU's camp and do you think an offer will be extended if he has a good showing.

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 1:16:24 PM)
Hi OSU fan...when I spoke to Brandon Harrison at the state track meet I almost get the impression that both he and Ringer feel that they've done or shown all that they need to warrant an offer from OSU and they claim to be settled on looking elsewhere if that doesn't happen soon. According to Harrison he won't be at the camp and I don't think Ringer will either but I'm not certain of that. I just hope they both don't bite off their nose to spite their face. I would rather see both be determined to battle for a precious OSU scholarship tooth and nail than offer some sort of ultimatum by not going to the camp. I like both of these guys and I really think that OSU has both in their plans but not going to camp can't help their cause one bit. Again I think an offer would change things instantly in both instances.

C'ville Buck (Jun 17, 2004 1:16:28 PM)
Hi Gary!Any idea why there is'nt an offer yet for Hartline? If he is the #2 WR in Ohio why would he not have one before guys like Amos and Stross.

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 1:21:38 PM)
Hi C'ville Buck...this Hartline issue is starting to take on a life of it's own. My impression from talking to people who know, including Hartline himself, is that an offer is imminent. OSU knows Hartline's feelings on being a Buckeye and I'm betting on them providing all the pomp and circumstance of having an offer presented to Hartline in JT's office with all of his family members there. How exciting and awesome would that be for Hartline and his brother Mike. OSU is almost recruiting two players here. If OSU knows Hartline wants to be a Buckeye and they've given him the impression an offer is likely coming, what's there to worry about. If he doesn't get one at camp then you can start all the Hartline threads you want. I think OSU knows he's the real deal and they will offer him when the time is right.

sears3820 (Jun 17, 2004 1:21:51 PM)
Hi Gary. Who in your opinion are some players who might walk away offers from our camp?

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 1:28:13 PM)
Hi sears 3820...that's really a tough one, especially when you're not certain who will really be there or not. Looking at it position-wise, I don't think a QB will get an offer at camp. No running back unless they would go with Sutton which I doubt. In addition to Hartline at WR you could maybe look at Orton or Robiskie. I don't really see another OL getting an offer yet but they will be interested in some of the ones there obviously. We need TE's but I don't see any getting an offer. And I don't really see many offers coming on defense unless they go with Lenix who they may want to look at as running back. If Ginn plans to use Lenix as a running back like he says, then he is no longer a tweener prospect like he is on defense. I just think OSU will evaluate all the talent after the camp more than anything and then make offers at a later time. There may be a few but not very many.

26runner (Jun 17, 2004 1:28:23 PM)
Hi, Gary. Since you are a Y-Town native, thought you might have some thoughts on who the top prospects are in the area (other than Manningham) and if the Buckeyes might be in on any of them.

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 1:35:10 PM)
Hi's a down year in the Y-town area as far as OSU recruiting goes but in addition to Manningham there is Rocco Cironi, an OL from Harding that will get some looks. There's Marty Bowman, a wide out from Liberty who is Big Ten material and Derrick Stewart from Youngstown Ursuline is a Big-time talent who is flying way under the radar. Kendell Davis is from Alliance but he plays in a Youngstown based conference. Ben Lane is a stretch from Hubbard to get any Big-time offers. There's a lot of Pitt and West Virginia and Iowa and Michigan State and Penn State material, second-tier level talent, but the OSU-Mich talent is few and far between this year.

Kirk (Jun 17, 2004 1:35:51 PM)
browndawg asks "Gary, I know you played a large role in Mitchum and was wondering if you see OSU getting any players from PA this year? Andre Mathis?"

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 1:38:56 PM)
As far as PA material goes, I could hope for Justin King but that seems only remotely possible. I would like to see Jayson White of McDowell get a good look, I've seen film on him and I liked what I saw. I'm not really familiar with a lot of Pa talent. The two OL linemen from Butler might be worth a look and there are others I'm sure. I usually hear of some solid prospects when I go to the Big-33 game in July every year. I'm sure this year will be no different.

osufan25 (Jun 17, 2004 1:39:02 PM)
Gary, What is the latest on Antwon Hight? I read recently that he is starting to put things together in the class room.

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 1:44:26 PM)
Hi osufan...Antwon Hight is an intriguing prospect no doubt. When he said he was lazy the last time I interviewed him he was referring to his academic prowess. But I'm certain he realizes now how important it is to him. I just hope it's not too little too late. I don't think he's camping with OSU but again I'm not certain. When I visited Brian Cross at McKinley back in April some time I was privy to some comments and things while I was there and I didn't feel really great about Hight's chances then. But I know that Cross is there and he's involved in trying to help Hight so that's a good thing. He's a big-time talent...he really is. And his best football is ahead of him if he can make the grades. And he wants to be a Buckeye also. So let's still hang in there with him. He's got a long way to go and it doesn't look real good but you never know until the time comes.

themainbuck (Jun 17, 2004 1:44:38 PM)
speeking of #2 how well do you think E.J. Underwood will do this year? and if he is injured who do you think will be behind him in the corner spot?

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 1:49:57 PM)
First of all I think very highly of Ashton Youboty and I don't see him supplanting Underwood opposite Fox. Underwood is top quality cover corner no doubt. And confidence is just naturally instilled him as a family trait I believe. Brandon has it as well. I feel very secure knowing Youboty is the third corner and guys like Underwood and Ginn are there to increase the level of competition. We're in good shape on the corners. And please stop talking about Donte Whitner at corner, it's never going to happen at this level. Safety is his most natural position and he's going to be a good one by the time his career is over.

Duck (Jun 17, 2004 1:50:06 PM)
I just watched some more video of Alex Boone. That kid is scary good. What a unique player, he doesn't really remind me of any other LT at the high school level. Is it realistic to expect him as a starter as a freshman?

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 1:55:22 PM)
Hi Duck, no don't count on Boone coming in and being a starter. First of all the level of talent in front of him is scary good as well. Secondly...he's still a baby and will only improve as he matures. I'm really looking forward to quality line play after about one more rough year. The classes from Sims to Barton to Person have been great for the future prosperity of the offensive line. Boone and Cordle are just more quality depth up there. Boone will have to be awfully, awfully good to come in ahead of some of the guys already in the program. It's possible but I'd like to see him redshirt for separation from the pack.

skeelo (Jun 17, 2004 1:55:30 PM)
hey gary how good of a prospect is cyrus kersey? he really seems to move very well on tape. what are his chances for an offer from tosu?

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 1:58:46 PM)
Hi skeelo... Coach Brown speaks highly of Kersey and he should. But Kersey isn't a guy that excites me a great deal in person. I'm going to catch Buchtel again this year to check Kersey out but I'm not as high on Kersey as someone like Duane is.

osufan25 (Jun 17, 2004 1:58:55 PM)
One more question Gary! What running backs will be offered? Thanks for taking my questions.

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 2:03:55 PM)
Thank you for asking questions osufan...If I've said it once I've said it a 1,000 times, but I like Tyrell Sutton. I also like Ringer. I also like Maurice Wells and I also like Freddie Lenix as a running back. Tim Conners will be the workhorse running back for Glenville but Lenix will the big-play running back for the Tarblooders. Curtis Smith may even get some carries at running back for Glenville. I like Greg Keys a lot more than most people do. He's got size, speed and he's an athlete. I'm not sold on Brinson from Canton McKinley. I do like Mister Simpson from Colerain. I think all of those that I've mentioned are worthy of watching this season. Other than Wells, I can't really comment on the OOS prospects.

Kirk (Jun 17, 2004 2:04:36 PM)
themainbuck asks "What type of player do you think Devon Lyons is? Can he make a big impact as a freshman, maybe end up like Jenkins?"

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 2:07:12 PM)
Regarding Devon Lyons, I'm guessing that number 18 will have a presence this season as a member of the receiving corps this fall. Because of the lack of overwhelming talent returning at the position, I believe opportunities for playing time are abundant this season and he's ready and willing to take advantage of any opportunities that come his way.

labsbeabmm (Jun 17, 2004 2:07:17 PM)
'm disappointed in the quality of running back we've been able to recruit in the last few years when you exclude the problematic clarett. What's the problem?

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 2:11:47 PM)
Hi labsbeabmm...I completely agree with you now that I think about it. I think Pittman and Haw are two guys that can turn the trend in the other direction, at least I hope so. But overall, other than hitting the mother lode with Clarett for one year, we haven't had great results recruiting the position really in recent years. I don't know the answer to that. We should almost come up aces on every single running back we bring in. And be three and four deep at all times. Right??

Beavis (Jun 17, 2004 2:11:53 PM)
Gary, who do you like better, Ringer or Sutton?

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 2:16:36 PM)
Hi Beavis...don't be a butthead. Smile! That's like asking a guy that loves to eat, which I do, whether I like Filet Mignon or Porterhouse. Give me either or give me death! Smile! We may get neither one. I just like all things about Sutton because I know him better but my first impression of Ringer was fantastic when he was a sophomore at the state title game. I really like both but if I had to decide between the two than I'll say Sutton just because no one else would.

Beavis (Jun 17, 2004 2:16:38 PM)
While you are answering, could you assess % chance that either Sutton or Ringer will get an offer? Thanks.

GaryHousteau (Jun 17, 2004 2:19:13 PM)
Unfortunately it doesn't look like either one is getting an offer right now but I was always under the impression that Ringer was a shoe-in. Maybe he still will.

Kirk (Jun 17, 2004 2:19:16 PM)
Ok everyone, thanks for stopping by. We'll have a transcript on the front in a bit. Be sure to stop by tomorrow morning for Steve's chat!
