What's the latest on Adam Myers-White. Any chance he will commit at camp?

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:07:29 AM)
He told me at the track meet 2 weeks ago that he intends to take 5 visits. But OSU is the only football camp he's going to. He will go to 2 basketball events with his state championship winning team and wants to spend the rest of the summer working out. It looks good to great for OSU, but it may take a while (then again, he may do a 180 and commit later this month).

TheLastStand (Jun 18, 2004 11:07:36 AM)
Thanks for taking the time Steve. What are we to make of the bracket at fullback on the preseason 2-deep? Is this punishment for Joes alcohol incident or is Schnittker really stepping up?

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:08:31 AM)
They were kind of co-fullbacks last year. You might read into it that Tressel is sending Joe a message that he can't screw up again. But Tressel rarely puts the screws to the seniors (unless it is a total screwed up mess like the Stevie B ordeal).

ObieJuanKanobe (Jun 18, 2004 11:08:47 AM)
Do you like Sutton or Ringer for an offer? I know Gary thinks not.

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:10:56 AM)
I have only seen Sutton in person, not on tape or in a game. His numbers don't lie. You wonder about Akron city competition. Neither guy is that big. Ringer 5-10, 190 and Sutton 5-9, 180. Saw Ringer on tape and in person and he is potentially awesome. Obviously, if he gets to 200, he could be dynamite. But small backs just don't seem to get it done in the Big Ten. Both have been great high school backs. I think they will end up a better schools than we might think right now.

Seabus (Jun 18, 2004 11:11:05 AM)
Steve, hope all is well. By the way, I liked the article in Columbus Monthly. How does the Columbus media members feel about the replacement of Obie?? Are there strong opinions for or against Knight??

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:12:18 AM)
Thanks for the comment on the MOnthly articles. really enjoy doing that and I'm working on a Troy Smith story now for them (would be out late July). Cols. media members know Knight would be no fun to work with, but I think most see he would create the kind of splash to get this program back on the front page (for the right reasons, ahem).

blitzer (Jun 18, 2004 11:12:25 AM)
Good news about Boone. I know he was still going to be a Buck but does send out a positive message to everyone that he is solid. Let's get this class a rolling!!!!

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:13:16 AM)
I agree, he is the cornerstone. Saw tape on him again the other day and he's just a road grader at an athletic 6-8, 300. I think he's your LT of the future. I believe OSU will do another bang-up job. If they can steal Sanchez ...

g0d1am (Jun 18, 2004 11:13:21 AM)
When (or if) will we begin to hear about who has been contacted for interviews for the Head Coaching position for the Basketball team?

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:14:30 AM)
Andy Geiger is keeping a tight lid on this. Usually this news surfaces from media that may cover a Knight or a Matta or whoever else when their ADs and SIDs confirm that contact has been made. Geiger said he would not discuss it until a coach is named. His search committee members (Hosket and Kellogg we understand are part of that mix) are also keeping mum.

ObieJuanKanobe (Jun 18, 2004 11:14:35 AM)
I thought Ringer claimed he was at 210 just recently? I'm afraid he's going to be an animal and we may miss a good back. As others have commented, we have not had much talent at RB other than MO for a while.

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:15:36 AM)
If he is, that's great. Maybe I'm working off old or bad information. As for the no talent at RB, I liked Pittman in the spring and I want you to watch Haw on Sat. and tell me what you think of him. These 2 are potentially dynamite. Pittman is the speed and Haw is the speed and power.

blitzer (Jun 18, 2004 11:15:41 AM)
Speaking of Sanchez, I haven't heard about his trip to C-Bus. Have you heard any rumblings?

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:16:46 AM)
We are trying today to do a follow up. At his press conference yesterday, Coach Tressel said they just had a prospect in (did not say his name) and his eyes bugged out when they walked inside the stadium. Could only presume he meant Sanchez, since we know he was supposed to be here. A source said the visit went well, we'd like to hear it from Sanchez, though.

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:17:49 AM)
Again, my Internet capability has been sporadic here at our office. Something is wrong with the router. I go down and unplug it and plug it back in and it works ... but only for 20-30 minutes then I have to do it again. So if I drop off you'll know why (ha ha).

ObieJuanKanobe (Jun 18, 2004 11:17:53 AM)
What's the latest on Bauserman? Did he sign? How many QB's do you think we take this year?

tsteele316 (Jun 18, 2004 11:18:58 AM)
bauserman did sign

tsteele316 (Jun 18, 2004 11:19:04 AM)
http://www.timesonline.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=12001254&BRD=2305&PAG=461&dept_id=478568&rfi=6>

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:19:31 AM)
I had not heard that. We'll try and follow up, but I'm sure he is at "spring training" for draftees before heading to Rookie ball.

TheLastStand (Jun 18, 2004 11:19:41 AM)
How do you think Stan White Jr. will fit into the mix this year? As a full back or tightend or a kind of hybrid position? We seem to have all the parts to put together an offense that can keep people off balance and guessing, and we seem to have adjusted the coaching staff to favor that, do you think we will be more diverse this season?

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:21:58 AM)
Stan is on the depth chart as the third TE and FB, so take that for what it's worth. I think you'll see him at both positions as necessary. More diverse? Oh, I don't know. They're going to try and establish the run so they don't feel the need to make the young QB or QBs and unproven SEs try and win games. That's my gut feeling. Obviously, they will need to throw the ball and, overall, have a better offensive output than last year if they expect to do anything. You can't expect airtight defense all year long because the opposing off. coordinators are pretty good, too.

blitzer (Jun 18, 2004 11:22:06 AM)
will anyone from Bucknuts be at the camps this week and next? Is media allowed to attend, especially the Senior Camps?

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:22:31 AM)
That is our plan. Things could be quiet for the next week or so leading up to the senior camps next Sat. and Sun.

tsteele316 (Jun 18, 2004 11:22:35 AM)
i'm sorry, the link is to the bauserman signing. very last paragraph

Seabus (Jun 18, 2004 11:24:02 AM)
Steve, I am interested in Brewster, the big OT from Wyoming High School. We have a ton of inside lineman and really have only signed a few OT's the past two years (Rehring and Boone). What info do you have on him and do you think a camp offer then commit happens like Sims or Mangold a few years back??

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:25:07 AM)
That is entirely possible. I believe Duane just did an update with Robert Brewster, who goes 6-5, 320. He is an athletic looking kid just standing there. I liked what I saw. I need to view some tape to gauge him as a football player. I think if he shows some things here he could be offered.

TheLastStand (Jun 18, 2004 11:26:17 AM)
What do we (OSU) think of Zach Hennis? All I know about him is that he is freakishly strong.

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:29:32 AM)
A lot of schools like Hennis. One of my sources, though, said he wished Hennis looked better on tape. Not my take, but what I heard.

osumack (Jun 18, 2004 11:29:39 AM)
It was my understanding that kids were not allowed to be offered at camp. Is this true?

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:30:39 AM)
No, not true (at least from my experience). Usually toward the end, the coaches invite guys they want to speak with to hang around. They may give them a verbal offer in the coach's office, then follow up with a written offer a day or 2 later.

ObieJuanKanobe (Jun 18, 2004 11:30:45 AM)
What's the court timeline for figuring out if Izzy or Guilford may be gone for sure? Thay longer it drags out the more OSU gets strung along.

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:33:03 AM)
OSU is not strung along. They are suspended from the school and off scholarship as it stands. This won't drag out that long that it will affect OSU's scholarship numbers. Even if it isn't decided until December, that's still a month before signing day. You never presume somebody is guity until it's proven in court, but I think most are making the assumption they are (they were caught essentially red-handed) and Irizarry, in particular, is gone on top of being gone with his now growing total of incidents (probation violation, trespassing on campus on top of the robbery). OSU is moving ahead without those guys in their plans, trust me on that.

blitzer (Jun 18, 2004 11:33:32 AM)
Steve-I know the "other" site has put out thier top 100 and runner-ups, when will the insiders do the same? Also, who does the midwest 100? Did I miss that one or has it not been out yet like the others?

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:34:32 AM)
Insiders is due to announce next week. They want to make a special splash with video of all 100 of the top 100. They are close to obtaining all the tape (in fact, we're helping them finish that up). Should be a masterpiece when it's done. I trust rankings done by Newberg and Wallace ... unless I don't like them. (ha ha)

Seabus (Jun 18, 2004 11:34:36 AM)
Steve, you make the call right now, who do we see as instate WR's in this class?

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:35:34 AM)
That's tough. They offered Andre Amos from Middletown. I think they also like Orton and Robiskie and they're supposed to offer Hartline. I think the uncertainty on Dareus Hiley (gone at least for now) may lead them to offer more guys and take an extra one.

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:36:21 AM)
If I had to guess, I suppose they get Amos, Hartline and maybe one more (here or outside the state). That's not a knock on Orton or Robiskie, who some have said has also been offered or will be at camp. All good to great players.

crazybuck15 (Jun 18, 2004 11:36:25 AM)
Hey Steve, who do you think will step up and become the next big star at tOSU?

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:37:59 AM)
The next big star at Ohio State? Hmmm. How about Ted Ginn Jr. May take a few games but at some point the New New Freak will get loose. (For those scoring at home, Gamble was the Freak, Holmes the New Freak and that makes Teddy the New New Freak.) Pittman and/or Haw will get a shot, too, if Ross reverts to his (injury-prone) form.

TheLastStand (Jun 18, 2004 11:38:09 AM)
Is there any speculation about coaches leaving after this season? I just get the feeling Coach Tucker is ready to assume the top spot some where. If that were to happen, would there be room for, oh, I dont know, mabey SPIELMAN??!!

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:40:41 AM)
I, too, wonder how this new arrangement will work for the upwardly mobile Coach Tucker. You know they had to get him some more money with the co-coordinator title. He really does have a huge responsibility by coaching almost half the defense at times with the nickel and dime situations they will be thrust into. I'm not sure I ever see Spielman coaching at OSU. He is enjoying his daily radio show and ESPN gigs. Plus, as I understand it, the local news reported that his wife, Stefanie, has had another relapse with her cancer. I doubt he wants to take on a 60-hour a week job as a college coach/recruiter with that situation still part of their lives.

brutus4633 (Jun 18, 2004 11:41:06 AM)
Steve-i'm a late arriver. Why do you think OB never was able to make much progress w/recruiting after the Final Four?

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:43:56 AM)
Well, he did have success. Everybody raved about the BFC, Sylvester and Dials class and they all got hurt. The problem was he never was able to get that upper echelon kid (the one who may only want to play college ball for a year or 2 then head to the NBA). Izzo had that down for a while, but you can tell even he is struggling a bit with that formula now. Harris was also a big deal and so is Butler (he could be a REAL nice player). Let's be clear, they went to the Final Four on Scoonie Penn's back. He was a special, special guy. Redd wasn't as good then as he is today, not by a long shot. He's made himself into an NBA all-star.

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:44:33 AM)
They did win 2 Big Ten titles after the Final Four. Dials is probably the only high profile recruit he's had that has panned out since the Final Four appearance, though.

ObieJuanKanobe (Jun 18, 2004 11:44:40 AM)
Are the coaches down on Roy Hall? Do you think he ends up starting vs. Cincy?

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 11:59:06 AM)
Somebody asked about hall. i talked to a coach yesterday and he said hall did great in bowl practice when Jenkins was hURT> Then he pressed too much in the spring. He should be fine.

ObieJuanKanobe (Jun 18, 2004 11:53:47 AM)
If we had to bet on 1 coach getting the BB job, who would it be? Say the odds on favorite? the silence is killing me!

TheLastStand (Jun 18, 2004 11:53:54 AM)
I believe Carpenter will be the MVP of the D this year. I think he will be the disrupter/playmaker that Will Smith was last year. Anyone agree?

TheLastStand (Jun 18, 2004 11:54:21 AM)
I think Knight, He fits this situation like a glove!

skeelo (Jun 18, 2004 11:54:41 AM)
i agree w/you last stand

Kirk (Jun 18, 2004 11:55:12 AM)
That's a good question Obi. I've never really been sold on the Knight stuff, but now I'm starting to believe it could happen. However, I've followed Knight fairly closely, and I'm really not sure if the negatives for OSU will outweigh the positives. Sure, it would bring$$$, but Knight is Knight. It would be good for college basketball though.

Kirk (Jun 18, 2004 11:55:35 AM)
The odds-on favorite is really hard to tell though because so little info is getting out.

ObieJuanKanobe (Jun 18, 2004 11:56:07 AM)
Does anyone know if Matta or Crean have been contacted?

tsteele316 (Jun 18, 2004 11:56:15 AM)
the one looming issue is whether or not osu is going to get slapped with probation, and for how long.

tsteele316 (Jun 18, 2004 11:56:52 AM)
i dont know if knight will want to break smith's record with a probation team that cant be in postseason play.

ObieJuanKanobe (Jun 18, 2004 11:57:33 AM)
I have to believe we need to move quickly here. This can't drag out 4+ weeks, can it?

Kirk (Jun 18, 2004 11:57:57 AM)
What Kyle wrote on the message board about Crean having high interest was interesting. Everything I had read before then suggested Crean would stay at Marquette. If you didn't read it, it's a must read: http://mb6.theinsiders.com/fohiostatefrm19.showMessage?topicID=74.topic

TheLastStand (Jun 18, 2004 11:58:14 AM)
Welcome back, Steve. I think the last ? you were asked was if Roy Hall would start against Cinci this year. I would like to add to that, will Zwick be "The Man" this year?

Kirk (Jun 18, 2004 11:58:59 AM)
Going back to TheLastStand, I think that's a good pick. Hawk is my early pick, but I'm with those that think that Carpenter will be making big-time noise on D

Susan (Jun 18, 2004 11:59:20 AM)
I'm curious as to Steve's reply to ObieJK's Roy Hall question. I there any substance to the rumors that the coaches aren't high on Roy?

giller (Jun 18, 2004 12:00:00 PM)
What is the lowdown on brian hartline's brother, is he really all that and a bag of chips? How interested in tOSU is he?

buckcrazy (Jun 18, 2004 12:00:54 PM)
How good is Teddy Ginn can he come in and start as a freshman?

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 12:00:58 PM)
No they aren't down on him. the coach I spoke with said it seemed like roy got down on himself when things didn't come easy. the dbs they were against were good too.

crazybuck15 (Jun 18, 2004 12:01:11 PM)
Well I heard Brian said they might be a package deal and we all know how much brian loves the buckeyes

skeelo (Jun 18, 2004 12:01:55 PM)
steve did osu offer trey stross?

SteveHelwagen (Jun 18, 2004 12:03:13 PM)
No, I don't think they offered stross.

Kirk (Jun 18, 2004 12:03:26 PM)
Trey Stross told Duane that he "heard" he had an offer

TheLastStand (Jun 18, 2004 12:03:47 PM)
Thanks, Steve. GO BUCKS!!

ObieJuanKanobe (Jun 18, 2004 12:03:48 PM)
Thanks for all Steve!

themainbuck (Jun 18, 2004 12:03:55 PM)
Thanx guys

themainbuck (Jun 18, 2004 12:04:03 PM)
GO BUCKEYES!!!!!

Kirk (Jun 18, 2004 12:04:59 PM)
Any last questions I might be able to help with?

themainbuck (Jun 18, 2004 12:06:16 PM)
Any outstanding walk ons that you've heard about during spring practice?

themainbuck (Jun 18, 2004 12:06:42 PM)
Possibly Kicker?

Kirk (Jun 18, 2004 12:07:05 PM)
I didn't hear about anyone in particular outside of Kyle Turano, and there was some talk about the Nnake kid who people said walked on out of flag football or something and was doing well. Turano is a good one to have around though since he kicked at BG

Kirk (Jun 18, 2004 12:08:02 PM)
skeelo asked about Stross

Kirk (Jun 18, 2004 12:08:31 PM)
To elaborate on that a bit, we had communication with Stross two days ago, and he said he had been told OSU had offered, but it didn't sound like he had it in his hand.

Kirk (Jun 18, 2004 12:09:09 PM)
I think if OSU wants him, he'll probably listen to what they have to say despite his Iowa commitment.
