Hi everyone! That has to be the most un-inspiring password by Kirk ever. lol. I've got an hour to see what's on your collective minds...let's chat!
Kirk (Jul 1, 2004 1:05:02 PM)
I thought it was second in uninspiring-ness to last week's password of "password"
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 1:05:59 PM)
You're on a roll I guess! Smile!
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 1:07:53 PM)
Congratulations to Brian Hartline...He's an extremely fine young man and very personable. He'll be a great Buckeye!
bucksfan47 (Jul 1, 2004 1:07:55 PM)
Hello Gary, good to talk again. What is everyone's feelings around the staff about AMW, and Daniels becoming Buckeyes? Thanks brother
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 1:10:12 PM)
Hi bucksfan...I think AMW will be a Buckeye but I also think he wants the whole treatment that is due to come his way along the way. He'll take his visits and be a Buckeye. I think Daniels will eventually be in the fold as well. What position yet I don't know.
MiniBus (Jul 1, 2004 1:10:13 PM)
Gary will you or have you had a chance to talk to Justin King since camp?
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 1:12:20 PM)
Hi minibus...I have not yet had a chance to talk to Justin King but I am intending to make a trip to see him as early as next week possibly. I'm elated that he was at the camp even though he didn't participate. We still have an outside shot with him I presume.
buckeyenole (Jul 1, 2004 1:12:23 PM)
Hi Gary! Do you put much stock in Justin King's friendship with Devon Lyons and his sway over Justin's college choice?
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 1:15:37 PM)
Hi buckeyenole...no I don't put much stock in that when it comes down to it. It sure helps to have another friendly voice in there but Devon didn't listen much to what Mundy and Breaston had to say from his own school and Mundy is his first cousin. But it helps. It gives King a place to stay for instance if he wants to come to campus in the summer or the fall. I'll take my chances with Daniels and Tressel working on him.
buckeyenole (Jul 1, 2004 1:15:42 PM)
Have you heard anything about the instate receivers other than Hartline(Amos, Robiskie, Orton)? Was Lymon at camp? Do we have a chance with him?
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 1:18:43 PM)
Don't know much about Lymon or even if he was at camp to be honest with you. I really like Orton both his size and demeanor as a receiver. Robiskie has the genes...His dad was in the NFL and obviously the Buckeyes must like Amos pretty much. I like big receivers that can run and I'm guessing Robiskie might be the next receiver to get an offer. Just a hunch.
MiniBus (Jul 1, 2004 1:18:46 PM)
Did Freddie Lenix give you any indication if the coaches said anything regarding an offer comming post camp?
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 1:22:21 PM)
No indication of an immediate offer to Lenix is what Coach Ginn told me earlier this week but again, they are anticipating one at some point in the future. I think maybe the Buckeyes need to see how they're going to fill this class out position wise before they pursue Lenix any further. I think ultimately he can play LB even though people say he's a tweener. Ray Lewis was a tweener at some point as well. And this kid can run and he's tough so he's going to surprise people this year at running back. I think you get in the fold and then worry about where you're going to play him at a later time. But I think one will come and he will be a Buckeye...eventually.
slimkid (Jul 1, 2004 1:22:24 PM)
OSU doesn't seem to be going hard after any RBs except Maurice Wells. Am I mistaken about this, or is the staff putting all their eggs in his basket? If Wells decides against OSU, who would be next at the top of the list?
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 1:26:19 PM)
Hi slimkid...I'm happy that Ringer swallowed his pride, unlike Harrison, and attended OSU's camp. I still think he has to be somewhere in their plans. He has to be. As far as Sutton goes...I don't know what to think of him. I guess he'll be another Mr. Football in Ohio that OSU has no interest in pursuing. Greg Keys from Bellevue has to be looked at but I doubt that he'll be offered a scholarship. I'm sure some OOS names will also pop up along the way but I would like to see one of these three become a Buckeye.
bucksfan47 (Jul 1, 2004 1:26:30 PM)
Gary, do you think that our current commits are going to be able to land us some more big time recruits ala 2002? I really like Boone, and O'neal and they seem to have a lot of the qualities that Zwick possessed in his attempt to land some others!
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 1:30:49 PM)
I'd really like to see Boone take a leadership role and talk to some of the more prominent recruits still out there like Doering for instance. Denlinger also seems to be a kid that can help attract other recruits on the fence. O'Neal has had conversations with Manningham in the past but that's a lost cause. Those are three top-notch players no matter how you slice it and it would be great if they can talk to a player or two along the way. Maybe Justin King would listen to those kinds of guys. Wishful thinking I guess.
edbuck51 (Jul 1, 2004 1:30:54 PM)
Did you get to see the o-lineman at camp? Was Wilson a stud? What about the kid from Kentucky. What is the grapevine saying about him?
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 1:34:47 PM)
Hi edbuck...unfortunately I couldn't make it to either senior camp day. I'm sure Steve can answer some of those questions tomorrow. I have been trying to call on a few this week and will continue to post those interviews as I complete them. From everything I hear and the people I've spoken to...Wilson would be quite a catch.
edbuck51 (Jul 1, 2004 1:34:51 PM)
I'm guessing you will see commits out of Sanchez, Schoenhoft, and many other big name QBs at, or shortly after the Elite 11 camp. Do you have any thoughts on that?
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 1:38:10 PM)
What a stage that would be for either of those two guys to commit to OSU. That would be wonderful. I doubt that will happen but if either of those two guys know they're going to be a Buckeye...they ought to commit when they're out there. It would be great publicity for them and for Ohio State. I say go for it. I don't know if the people running the camp would encourage or discourage that at the camp?
osugrad21 (Jul 1, 2004 1:38:14 PM)
Gary, with Izzy enrolling at YSU, have you heard anything about Ira's plans? Obviously they both have to wait for the cases to run the course, but could Izzy suit up for YSU after this year if he avoids time? With Willie Williams, I guess it is feasible to believe a team somewhere would take a talent even if he is on probation.
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 1:42:58 PM)
Hi osugrad...I don't believe you will be seeing Louis on the field any time soon at YSU. When JT was at YSU, he had a running back that played as a true freshman in 1990 and got into trouble with the law during that offseason. He didn't show up again until what would have been his fifth season at YSU and was a vital part of the 1994 championship team at YSU. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes either Louis or Ira that long to make a similar impact. I'm guessing Louis will be out of action even longer than Ira but I hope both have at least one more year at some point to play college football.
rossram (Jul 1, 2004 1:43:09 PM)
Gary, I'm interested in OSU interest in Southwestern OH kids. Is OSU looking at any of the kids from the Greater Catholic League or the Greater Miami Conference?
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 1:47:22 PM)
Hi rossram...I was hoping Mister Simpson was going to be one kid that OSU was going to track this year if he is a part of either league you mentioned, but that's not possible now. For whatever reason, OSU doesn't recruit many players in the SW part of the state. Other than Myers-White and Schoenhoft...I'm not sure who the next big recruit is that OSU is pursuing. Sorry.
MiniBus (Jul 1, 2004 1:47:30 PM)
What reciever would you compare Hartline too?
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 1:53:45 PM)
I would compare him to any other fast receiver with good size and good hands who isn't afraid to go over the middle to make a difficult catch. He's smart, he's played QB so he knows how both positions think, he can jump, he goes after the ball aggressively and he's a football player. I refuse to limit a comparison with him to just any certain white receiver. Smile. He's a good one folks.
edbuck51 (Jul 1, 2004 1:53:53 PM)
The Bucks seem to be in good standing as far as being in on many top notch recruits at most positions. The exception would seem to be at WR, OL and LB. Would you agree?
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 2:03:20 PM)
I prefer Ohio talent first of all for two reasons. One is because I like the talent in the state and I think there are plenty of "top notch" players here and two is because most of the big name OOS talent is going to take it down to the wire and our percentages in that scenario isn't very good. I'll take 80 percent of every class made up of Ohio kids and whatever we get OOS...and we will get some...is a bonus. JT always recruited the "state of Youngstown" at YSU (a 75 mile radius) and sprinkled in Florida kids every year. I like the same formula. Recruit Ohio and the area around it well and Florida and I'll take my chances. Regardless of position. There's enough big time talent right here.
labsbeabmm (Jul 1, 2004 2:03:34 PM)
how would you rate buckeyes signings to date?
GaryHousteau (Jul 1, 2004 2:07:18 PM)
Hi labsbeabmm... I'm very happy with what we have right now. Of course I've made no bones about not getting the best receiver in the state for the second year in a row and I'm not happy about that. No offense to Hartline, I think he's tremendous in his own right, but Manningham is special with the football. Myers White will be another tremendous pick up down the road. Sure I'd love to see a big name out of state player like Justin King and Sanchez and Wilson and other names we don't even know yet but I'm happy right now. Let's secure Ohio and then move on to others. It's a great and winning formula.
Gary Housteau (Jul 1, 2004 2:09:53 PM)
Thanks everyone for participating in the chat today. Have a great weekend and always smile!
