We have a transcript from today's chat with Gary Housteau now posted.

I had a nice chat with Alex Boone this morning and I hope to have an update on him posted today or tomorrow. What a wonderful young man to talk to. There was never any doubt in his mind he would be a Buckeye!

dozerman (Jul 8, 2004 1:06:43 PM)
sounds awesome about Boone...I hope he is helping with recruiting

dozerman (Jul 8, 2004 1:07:18 PM)
gary, Do you feel like Sanchez is now only a dream?

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 1:09:31 PM)
Hi dozerman...yes he did mention that he spoke to a player or two at OSU's camp about that's a positive thing. Naturally in his position or being in his status...some recruits look up to him. He would like to see AMW come into the fold soon as would most of us Buckeye fans.

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 1:09:57 PM)
About Sanchez...I feel like more and more our chances are improving and they will improve greater when the lineman comes in for his visit this weekend. It's not as far fetched as it once was...landing the trifecta in California.

BuckeyeDave (Jul 8, 2004 1:10:03 PM)
Rocco Cironi seems like he would be a "good get" for Ohio State. If we are in need of an additional OL, why do you think we haven't offered? Seems like he'd verbal right away.

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 1:14:03 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...I know Rocco pretty well being from Youngstown and he from Warren and I for one would like to see him offered as well. But a couple things are working against him. One is I think besides Boone, OSU will take only one other tackle and I don't think Rocco is next on their list. Two...he's not the ideal size weightwise for his position but he will grow into doubt. I see his best football way ahead of him and I think he will be a guy that will land somewhere in the Big Ten. It would be a shame if he didn't. I really like his potential and his current ability isn't too shabby either. Thom McDaniels thinks Cironi could be the best OL that he's ever had. Not too shabby of an endorsement.

bucknut13 (Jul 8, 2004 1:14:13 PM)
Gary-Do you think we are looking at any other QB's beside Sanchez and Schoenhoft, so if neither one chooses us, they go for a Stull, etc? Thanks.

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 1:18:17 PM)
Hi seems as if Stull has temporarily fallen off the radar but that might be because OSU is anticipating landing either Sanchez or Schoenhoft or both. Again I'm happy getting one or the other or neither. I like Schlichter and Hartline next year and we can't two QB's two years in a row. Steve did a great update on Sanchez and that got me excited as a fan. Maybe we will reap more than we expect at the Elite 11 camp. Two verbals to OSU would be nice! Smile!

intogloryride (Jul 8, 2004 1:18:20 PM)
What are the thoughts on Travers is he an Iowa lean or will he wait for a Buckeye offer. Thanks.

tsteele316 (Jul 8, 2004 1:18:24 PM)
gary, will travers wait to see if osu offers, or will he bolt for iowa?

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 1:22:31 PM)
Hi guys...thanks for the Travers question. I think Travers is a guy that wants an OSU offer to come his way and I think he will wait on one before he commits to Iowa. Again, I don't think it's a great year at all for instate LBs and if OSU wants one, there is only him and Lenix to consider and most people think Lenix isn't big enough for the position. Travers is a football player no doubt but I like the Katzenmoyer, Wilhelm, D'Andrea and Hoobler types in the middle of my defense. Travers unfortunately doesn't fit that profile. I don't see him at OSU but that doesn't mean he isn't worthy of being a Buckeye. About Lenix...I'm one of the few who say to watch out for him as a running back this year! But I'll take him at any position...just take him.

bucksfan47 (Jul 8, 2004 1:22:39 PM)
whats up Kirk, and Gary? I want some clarity on all of this Troy Smith to transfer crap that is circulating on the boards. Is there any truth to it, are just mis - info? Thanks guys.

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 1:24:54 PM)
Hi bucksfan47...I talk to Coach Ginn pretty regularly and I just ran into Troy Smith at the state track meet and the North/South game and there was no consideration of him transferring. So I wouldn't put much stock into that. Smith loves being a Buckeye...I'm certain of that.

JONESEY (Jul 8, 2004 1:25:05 PM)
Gary, how many more recruits do you think JT will take in order to complete the class of '05??

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 1:29:24 PM)
Hi jonesey...I always defer to Steve when it comes to numbers in the class. I'm like the kid in the candy store who just wants to keep grabbing more until I'm told I'm not allowed to have any more. I say we're no where near or final tally right now. At least 10 to 12 more commitments before we even start crunching the final total. Sure we all have a few earmarked but you never know how it will play out until the final day. And we don't too well on the final day. Mostly because our solid guys are already in the fold and we're just hoping to land one that we'd be fortunate to get at the end. But we usually don't get the late ones for the most part. So keep enjoying the recruiting stuff for a while. By the time the season starts we'll have a better idea.

BuckeyeDave (Jul 8, 2004 1:29:33 PM)
Are we likely to get Schoenhoft? And if we do, will we pursue Miles Schlichter?

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 1:34:29 PM)
I'm not certain about Schoenhoft. I'm not certain of his grand plan at all. In one way...I think he should feel fortunate to be in his position and jump on the Buckeye offer so that makes me really think he's not ultimately interested in the Buckeyes. But he's also saying some of the right things and going to OSU's camp and the Nike camp so I don't know how to interpret things. I do like Schlichter so I won't be disappointed if we don't get Sanchez or Schoenhoft. But if I could take either Sanchez or Schoenhoft right now...I would prefer Sanchez by a wide margin. Sanchez, Schlichter and Hartline and I'll be a really happy guy.

dozerman (Jul 8, 2004 1:34:45 PM)
Any word on when WIlliams and teammate will be in? I forget his name

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 1:37:10 PM)
I think it's Bemoll is the lineman's name...correct me someone if I'm wrong. The latest I was told is that he will be in this weekend for a visit. I haven't confirmed that with Steve or anyone on this site. Maybe Kirk can confirm that? I think it's a great thing to have a chance at all three of them. And I mean a real chance. Will see if Williams can finish!

Kirk (Jul 8, 2004 1:37:46 PM)
Last I knew, Bemoll was still planning on coming in this weekend. Landing all three of them would be huge.

tsteele316 (Jul 8, 2004 1:37:54 PM)
do you know if the penn/ohio big 33 game will be televised? i live in columbus and dont know if it will be on or not.

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 1:39:09 PM)
I think Steve said it will be a delayed broadcast back to Ohio. I'll be there live and in color for updates and photos and the latest on all the Buckeyes in the game.

bucksfan47 (Jul 8, 2004 1:39:46 PM)
Gary.... Is Teddy Jr. still thinking about the Olympics, are is he set on getting ready for the football season? I'm getting pretty excited to see the new number 7 in 58 days!

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 1:43:29 PM)
Teddy's dad just told me that Ted is just going thru the 7-on-7 drills and he's staying in Columbus now so I have been under the assumption since the end of his Raleigh track meet that he was finished with track for now and is all football. He's also slated to play in the Big-33 game and I haven't heard anything to the contrary. It's safe to say that his very real Olympic aspirations are on hold for now.

dcbuck (Jul 8, 2004 1:43:43 PM)
What position does F. Lenix want to play? Does he think he's big enough for LB or fast enough for S? Or is there intersest in playing on Offense? What are the coaches telling him they'd like to see him at?

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 1:49:40 PM)
Hi dcbuck...I've spoken with Freddie a couple of times about this and he's adamant about wanting to play at running back not only in high school but even at the next level. He intends to make everyone believe he can be a runner this year. Tim Conner and Lenix will be the two main backs this year. Ray Smalls is talented is in his own right and is there to fall back on if Lenix doesn't pan out there but Smalls main focus will be on defense where he will be this year's Ted Ginn Jr at corner for the Tarblooders. As far as Lenix on defense...Coach Ginn is adamant about him being a linebacker period and he's confident that Lenix will answer any doubters this year. Lenix is put together well and he's very fast. I'll take him anywhere. Lenix himself would like to play linebacker on defense as well but he's told me he will move to safety if that's where the college teams wants him to play. Just watch him and enjoy. He could be one of the best two-way players in the state if not thee best.

BuckeyeDave (Jul 8, 2004 1:49:45 PM)
Anything newsworthy on Maurice Wells? He's seems kind of small to be a Big10 RB.

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 1:54:39 PM)
I'm not happy with the whole running back mess that we seem to be in. For JT's purposes, the back that fits his ideal profile the most is Greg Keys or Underwood from Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas...and I'm not sure what his situation is now. I like Keys a lot but obviously Wells is the more attractive choice. He looks smallish...I've never seen him play in person obviously but the best options we seem to have are all small and we're ignoring two of the top ones in Ohio. I'll take Ringer or Sutton anyday. We can't take both because they're both small but we should get at least one of them. Wells has to be considered a bonus if he comes I guess. I have nothing new on him to report. Sorry.

dcbuck (Jul 8, 2004 1:54:45 PM)
Any news on Javon Ringer, watching his highlight videos really screams out for an offer, if he had the grades would he be a no doubter, is it just the grades?

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 1:59:12 PM)
We need running backs especially if Kennedy doesn't come aboard. We need at least two this year to stock the cupboard and maybe even three considering we barely had any last year. I like Ross but unfortunately we cannot count on him and most people have given up on Mo Hall. They'll both be gone next year anyway so we really need to add depth. I don't want to speculate but with Harrison at ND now...Ringer would be a great catch for them as well if his grades have improved so drastically like they did on the ACT. Ringer is good. He was good as a sophomore. I like Ringer and I know he likes the Buckeyes so I don't get it? We'll have to wait and see.

giller (Jul 8, 2004 1:59:21 PM)
Hi Gary, i have a theory on m. wells, that he has actually committed to tOSU, but because he is announcing on some show on signing day no one is making it public. This would explain the lack of interest in Ringer or anyone else. What do you think? (he is ranked the #1 rb in the country on one service) thx gary.

giller (Jul 8, 2004 2:02:43 PM)
ps emmit smith was supposed to be too small and barry sanders was only 5'8"

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 2:03:22 PM)
Hi giller...I like your theory but in the mean time we all have ants in our pants about the running back position! I too think we are in a good position with Wells but you never know for certain with out of state guys...period. I'd hate to lose Wells at the last minute and lose Ringer or Sutton because of it as well. I think you have to offer Ringer or Sutton...period. This is Ohio State for crying out loud and we should have the state's best runners for the majority of years.

dcbuck (Jul 8, 2004 2:03:31 PM)
On a non-recruiting note, how do you think the UC game will go this year, we had a lot of trouble with them last year and even though we have them at home they have Dantonio, will we have to make dramatic changes to the D so he doesn't have a huge advantage? Add in the fact we'll be breaking in a new QB a new o-line, I can see this one being a nail-biter since JT will be ultra-ultra conservative

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 2:09:37 PM)
I know all the pro-JT people won't like this but Dantonio will embarrass Ohio State's offense at Ohio Stadium and we will be very fortunate to come out with a win in this game but we will prevail. JT will take one shot and that's it. One long pass and maybe even on the first play of the game like at Penn State and even Wisconsin I believe and that's it. It's back to playing not to lose. It's the only way he knows how to run a team. It works and I'm pro OSU as much as anyone reading this but JT's offensive style will never, and I repeat never, change. It's what has made him the successful coach that he is. The parts are greater than the sum of a JT offense, evidence by the number of guys that went to the NFL this year. It is what it is. Play not to lose. I'm pro JT. I'm pro OSU. But JT is what he is. Let's kick a late field goal and beat the bearcats any way possible.

giller (Jul 8, 2004 2:12:45 PM)
dcbuck, i was at the game last yr and the bucks were indeed lucky to win, which is why they wont be taking them lightly, uc has alot of experience and if the OL plays well they will score some pts, they have richard hall(remember him) at tb and Guiduli(sp) a sr. at qb, but not close to the talent of tOSU in the shoe, no blowout , but i dont think a nail bitter, also dont be suprised if the bucks have a very good rushing attack this yr both ross and hall will be strong, and zwick is twice the passing talent of krenzel JT did run a spread offense at Y-st a couple of yrs, so heres hoping

dcbuck (Jul 8, 2004 2:14:03 PM)
What are some other junior to be's that aren't getting much pub yet?

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 2:16:29 PM)
Tony Reed from Warren Harding is going to be a tremendous talent on the defensive line the next two years to name one.

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2004 2:17:31 PM)
If that's it then I want to thank Kirk for his help with the chat every week and thank you all for taking the time to ask the questions. See you all here next week. Go Bucks! And remember to always smile!
