Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau

We have a transcript from today's chat with Gary Housteau posted now.

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 1:05:48 PM)
Hi everyone...everyone is obviously concerned about Sanchez and Schoenhoft at this time but I really enjoyed speaking with a young man who is talented in his own right earlier today. Tim Hiller from Orrville is a 4.0 student and a prolific passer standing 6-4, 215. I'll have an update posted on him in the near future.

dagat21 (Jul 15, 2004 1:07:13 PM)
When are Sanchez and Schoenhoft going to announce?

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 1:08:16 PM)
The Big-33 game is just a week away and I'll be there to give you the latest on all of the Buckeye recruits in the game. I won't be chatting next week so now is a good time to ask any of those questions as well.

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 1:10:07 PM)
Hi the best of my knowledge...we could be hearing something as early as Monday or Tuesday of next week as the Elite 11 camp will be getting underway next week. I would think the two would like to meet out there and have a discussion before either one goes public.

Grand PooBah (Jul 15, 2004 1:10:13 PM)
Gary, do you agree with the offer and signing of Skeete? Is he worthy of helping us?

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 1:13:19 PM)
Hi Grand offense to any of the kickers but my focus right now is only on Mike Nugent and Josh Huston at this time. I'm certain these two guys will give us a formidable kicking game this year and frankly I can't even keep track of all of the other scholarship kickers on the roster right now. But Skeete is an engaging personality to say the least and I do think he can help us in the future after watching him kick in the North-South game.

LloydSev (Jul 15, 2004 1:13:25 PM)
Hey Gary, being brutally honest, where you do feel the Buckeyes will end up at the end of the year?

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 1:17:31 PM)
Hi Lloyd Sev...First thing is first...the Buckeyes will continue their home winning streak even though it obviously won't be an easy task, beginning with week one. But we have to win every game at home...singing Carmen Ohio in the endzone after a home victory is the worth the price of admission alone. I think NC State will be a tough road victory but a victory nonetheless. I can see us getting knocked off by only Purdue on the road this year. I see one loss this year during the regular season. I'm basing this on an unbelievably talented defense and a solid kicking game. I have no faith in our offense because of the youth and the philosophy. I'm being brutally honest and I'm not trying to be negative or offend anyone. Smile!

homesickbuck (Jul 15, 2004 1:17:40 PM)
It sounds like Kevin Bemoll might be ready to commit. How Good is he?

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 1:22:36 PM)
Hi homesickbuck...I would defer to Duane on how good Bemoll actually is but the consensus is that he's a really good one. I personally can't rate a guy until I can see him in person or at least on film. I look for intangibles as much as obvious physical talent. If he helps to bring Sanchez to us by coming here than that is good enough alone. We could really have something with all three of these California studs coming here. Let's hope for a good weekend and upcoming week for Buckeye recruiting. And then maybe the rest of the dominoes will start falling. Bemoll, Sanchez and Schoenhoft would be a great kick start. I'm crossing my fingers.

mbuck37 (Jul 15, 2004 1:22:47 PM)
On a Scale from 1-10 how good are our chances with Sanchez really. I believe he can be a super QB for us . What do you think Gary..Thanks

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 1:27:28 PM)
Hi mcbuck37...I would say 7 right now. I've been trying to read between the lines of everything that I've read about him and I want to be more encouraged but I prefer to remain cautiously optimistic at this time and leave it at that. I haven't spoken with him myself so I can't offer any insights that way, sorry. I too believe he can be a super quarterback but super is a relative term under JT. Super means an accurate and consistent Craig Krenzel.

InterPants (Jul 15, 2004 1:27:50 PM)
Hey Gary, I was surprised ESPN said our best player was Holmes, with Hawk second, and Carpenter third. What's your take?

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 1:32:46 PM)
Hi interpants...Hawk had a quiet end of the year by his standards and I believe it was because of his injury status more or less. Carpenter is just a stud. I like him even more than Hawk at this time because of his size and physical prowess. Holmes on the other hand is just short of magical as a receiver...I really like this kid's ability but he needs to have another big receiver, be it Hall or even Lyons, on the other side. He will be the focal point of the defensive backfield this year. I also think Fraser could be as big a playmaker as anyone on defense for the Buckeyes this year. We will definitely be a defensively dominated team this year. Let's hope were not on the field too much!

mbuck37 (Jul 15, 2004 1:32:55 PM)
Gary is it also true that Scheonhoft is a Strong lean towards Michigan? Could we possibly have a top 5 recruiting class on our hands?

osubucks221979 (Jul 15, 2004 1:33:01 PM)
sorry i'm late and if this has been covered.... Gary, what are the rumors about Schoenhoft? Is he really favoring OSU?

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 1:37:20 PM)
About Schoenhoft... I don't believe he's a strong Michigan lean at all. In fact I'm thinking more Ohio State as every day passes. Sanchez, by name value, will help us in becoming a top 5 class but we still need more pieces to come our way. Maurice Wells is another piece that will propel us to being a top five class. Worthington is another name that will help us be a top five class. In state...we need AMW. I think we're expected to get AMW and we have to get him. Those four, with or without Schoenhoft, will help us become a top five class. I'm sure we'll get one or two other big names we're not even considering right now.

edbuck51 (Jul 15, 2004 1:37:33 PM)
Am I a little crazy, or is the more excitement around the football program this summer than most years?

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 1:42:45 PM)
He edbuck51 you seem like a crazy guy just from the beer signature alongside your name. But I think the Internet is driving the excitement more than anything. I know passionate Ohio State are looking here and the other main site for recruiting information all of the time and we're trying as best as we can to provide that. I think by Steve coming here...he's made this site better than it already was. Our football team is one of the greatest in the country and the legitimate websites that cover them should strive to be the best sites in the country to feed our avid Buckeye fans. Recruiting information is only going to get better and better going forward.

gobucks04 (Jul 15, 2004 1:42:58 PM)
Gary what do you make of Marcel Frost supposedly moving over to TE? He was having a great first year at DE and I wonder what prompted the change (obviously Irizarry being gone). Do you think he may even play both sides of the ball as a TE aand DE?! And what about the rumors of him trying to play basketball when football is done? Thanks.

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 1:48:44 PM)
Hi gobucks...I'm a big Marcel Frost and I was on both sides of the ball in high school. He's an abundantly talented football player and was already showing it on defense this spring. He can be an Irizarry type of tight end on offense. He's a major talent. I was anticipating this move after the Irizarry fiasco but I almost didn't want it to happen after watching him on defense this spring. He and Jay Richardson were very pleasing sights IMO to watch on the defensive line. I think is going to excel at whatever position he settles in to eventually. Now it looks like tight end.

osubucks221979 (Jul 15, 2004 1:48:44 PM)
When do you expect AMW to commit? Is he still a sure thing?

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 2:06:27 PM)
Hi osubucks...I do expect AMW to commit but I'm not sure when that will happen. I think he will take the rock star circuit and visit all five schools before becoming a Buckeye. To be honest, I'm not as certain as I once was about AMW but in the end I do believe that he will be a Buckeye. Also sorry everyone about the delay.

osubucks221979 (Jul 15, 2004 2:04:40 PM)
Gary, what do you think about Lawrence Wilson? What's his best position? What are the bucks' shot?

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 2:08:07 PM)
Lawrence Wilson is an intriguing prospect as well. He's another kid that I fully intend to see in person this year. I kind of like his potential at tight end...but I really want to see him perform on defense before making a decision. I know ST V's new coach doesn't throw the football at all...he makes another college coach I know look we won't truly know Wilson's value as a receiver by statistics alone.

mbuck37 (Jul 15, 2004 2:08:16 PM)
The one question I had was worst case scenario if we lost Sanchez and Schoenhoft would we go after Forcier & McDonald and how good are they? Thanks again

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 2:10:59 PM)
If we lose Sanchez and Schoenhoft next week... I too like Forcier but I also like Hiller and Stull...those are the next three in my pecking order and maybe in that order as well. But I would then only take one QB and not two. If we only get one of Sanchez or Schoenoft, then I might be happy with just one and then take two next year. I really like Hiller after seeing him at the Nike camp and he's a 4.0 student as well.

redondo (Jul 15, 2004 2:11:06 PM)
Hi Gary - We seem to be using a lot of scholarships on kicker-punter types. Is this "in-character" or "out of character" for Coach Tressel. IF out of character, what is driving this behavior? please comment. Thank you.

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 2:14:27 PM)
Hi redondo... I can tell you that JT at one time had a long punter and a short punter at YSU...two separate people. The kicking game is very important to JT. I think he believes he can get an advantage on everyone through the kicking game alone. I hate to use up too many scholarships on kickers/punters because that takes away from other positions but I do trust JT entirely in this aspect. JT has always had solid place kicker (i.e. Jeff Wilkins types) and solid punters.

mbuck37 (Jul 15, 2004 2:14:41 PM)
Do we have a remote chance with either Lymon of Rouse?

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 2:15:37 PM)
hi said it best using the word remote.

Kirk (Jul 15, 2004 2:15:51 PM)
IH8Michigan asks "Gary, If we don't get either Sanchez or Schoenhoft, then you think we'll shoot for Miles Schlichter next year?"

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 2:18:26 PM)
If we don't get either Sanchez or Schoenhoft this year than I'm taking Schlichter and Hartline next year. I think Hartline is eventually in the bag for certain. I believe Schlichter will consider the depth chart more at OSU before he makes a decision. We could get both but it depends on if we get both this year. If we get both Sanchez and Schoenhoft this year...I don't think we will get Schlichter the following year. I think we bag Hartline either way.

osubucks221979 (Jul 15, 2004 2:18:34 PM)
I heard a rumor that Maurice Wells was already committed to OSU and was just waiting to announce nationally. This may be why OSU hasn't pursued any RB's heavily. What do you think? Is this a possibility?

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 2:22:55 PM)
We need more than Wells this year anyway. Ideally we need Wells, one big back (i.e. Greg Keys type) and either Ringer or Sutton. And if we don't get Wells, than we need to get both Ringer or Sutton. We know what we're getting in Ringer and Sutton and both are good enough for me. Say what you want about their size but these guys are both football players. I do think we could use a big back like Keys or Underwood or an OOS kid with size. But I can't say if Wells has already promised to commit to OSU or not...I've heard nothing close to that being the case. It could be true but I haven't heard anything and I doubt it to be true.

BuckeyeDave (Jul 15, 2004 2:23:09 PM)
Do you keep track of the 7-on-7 high school games held during the summer? Do you know where I can get a schedule?

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 2:26:22 PM)
Hi Buckeye Dave... no I don't keep track of the 7-on-7 games but I do venture out to a high school practice whenever I have the chance. Most schools have them throughout July though. I think it's funny because most high schools run the ball predominantly anyway but they participate in 7-on-7 drills.

osubucks221979 (Jul 15, 2004 2:27:37 PM)
How many WR's will we take and what names do you like?

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 2:30:49 PM)
I'm guessing maybe two more receivers this year. I kind of like Orton but we're hearing less about him as time goes on. Obviously Ohio State likes Amos. I like Robiskie to be honest with you. I'm sure we'll be in on a Florida receiver before it's over and done with. Maybe Jessie Hester Jr. ... In Ohio I would be happy taking Robiskie and Orton.

mbuck37 (Jul 15, 2004 2:30:50 PM)
Thank You again Kirk and Gary for your time and patience in answering our questions. Is Lennix a OSU lock?

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 2:32:49 PM)
Lenix has one 'n' and not! Yes in the end...he's a Buckeye! It's as simple as that.

Kirk (Jul 15, 2004 2:33:37 PM)
All right everyone, thanks for stopping by today and sorry about the glitch in the middle of the chat. Steve Helwagen will be chatting tomorrow at 1 pm EST. Talk to you soon Gary.

mbuck37 (Jul 15, 2004 2:33:47 PM)
Thanks again guys! Take Care

GaryHousteau (Jul 15, 2004 2:35:22 PM)
Thanks to everyone for participating in the chat including Kirk for his efforts in bringing us together. I will not be chatting next week but we will continue this the following. It's almost time to start the season. August 11 is media day for our Buckeyes. It won't be long now.
