Hi everyone! Media day is the 11th of August. I'll be there. Let's chat!
InterPants (Jul 29, 2004 1:06:39 PM)
Hey Gary, tell me some good news per our special teams, I'm not so worried about returning with holmes and gin, but what about our punting game
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 1:08:09 PM)
Hi interpants...I'm going to put my faith in the Josh Huston as our senior punter and not worry about it until proven otherwise.
MBuck37 (Jul 29, 2004 1:08:20 PM)
Good afternoon Gary, Has there been any talk about a kid named Jonathan Stewart. I saw the video and WOW! he has speed, power and quickness and the Bio says he's 200 +lbs. What about M.Wells, J Ringer? I also read about a kid named Conredge Collins a RB from Miami,Fla Pace High School he's listed at 5'10 220lbs 4.5 forty..The Bucks have already been to Florida to see him. Has there been an offer that you know of. Thanks Gary.....Also Collins has a strong interest in OSU......Thanks again
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 1:12:24 PM)
Hi MBuck...my forte is mainly with recruiting in Ohio but I am aware of everyone but Collins at this time. I'll be happy with M. Wells and Ringer and call it a class. Anything else is a bonus. I'm on record to saying I like Tyrell Sutton, Greg Keys and now Dennis Underwood...if he has indeed gained his eligibility that is a great thing. Between those five and maybe the name Jay Oakley from NC...I think we can have at least two or maybe three more than serviceable backs in this class. Add maybe Collins as you mentioned in that group as well.
Blue Chip (Jul 29, 2004 1:12:31 PM)
Is it just a matter of time before Lenix is offered?
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 1:16:30 PM)
Hi Blue Chip...I'm under the belief it's a matter of time but when Ginn Sr. himself says he's not sure what's going on right now, then I'm really lost. I think JT can't really miss anymore on any kid he brings into the program due to his hit on the graduation percentage. He's losing guys left and right before they even finish their eligibility now. I'm sure that's a concern to him as well as the admissions office. Maybe Lenix's domestic situation is a hindrance when it comes down to it but that's all speculation. I hope to have a sit down talk with Lenix this weekend and see what he's really thinking at this time. In the end, with a good senior season, Lenix will have an offer and he will be a Buckeye. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
Duck Of Death (Jul 29, 2004 1:16:41 PM)
And what about the return coverage units?
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 1:18:50 PM)
Hi Duck of Death...what about the return coverage units? Smile! There are athletes everywhere in the program so I'm certain all special teams units will be upgraded dramatically this season.
osubucks22 (Jul 29, 2004 1:19:03 PM)
Good day Gary! How much will TG2 play at WR this year? He has to after watching him this weekend I would think?
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 1:24:29 PM)
Hi osubucks22...I get in trouble with people every time I talk about offense! Obviously Ginn is a tremendous talent. Devon Lyons is a tremendous talent. Roy Hall is a specimen. Santonio Holmes is a special guy. Tony G. is a speedy and talented guy. Devin Jordan has the total package. Dukes is touted as possibly Florida's best receiver. Justin Zwick was a schoolboy legend in Ohio. Troy Smith dazzles everyone that watches him. There's so many weapons there and yes I expect Ginn to be right there in the thick of it. A blind man can see that we have all the makings of a prolific passing attack...whether that comes to fruition or not we will have to see. Yes I too think has to be a big part of it somewhere on offense but in the end...I still think his NFL career will be at corner on defense.
Dan (Jul 29, 2004 1:24:44 PM)
Hi Gary, 37 Days I can't wait. How do you think our QB situation is going to shake out this year? I hope Zwick can get the job done.
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 1:28:52 PM)
Hi Dan...QB is still an iffy situation at best. I think we all are under the impression that JZ will start out the season as the number one guy with an able TS available in the bullpen. I firmly believe that JT will avoid any rotating type of situation and he will stick with his number one more than the fans may want him to. Can you say Bellisari and Krenzel. Smith claims that he can handle the backup role well but we will have to see how he will handle it if the offense sputters with JZ under center. Again...look for the offense to be safe instead of sorry at the early part of the season. I'm certain that JT hopes Lydell Ross and the offensive line can carry the team until everyone settles into a particular role.
bucksfan47 (Jul 29, 2004 1:29:03 PM)
Hello Gary! I want to know about the stewart kid in Wash. Is he the real deal Are not? Also sounds like he has some interest. What is the lack of interest for the #1 R.B. in the country?
buckeyenole (Jul 29, 2004 1:29:12 PM)
Did anyone ask you about Jonathan Stewart already? I watched his vid clips last night and I REALLY want him to be a Buckeye. He reminds me SO much of Reecie; it was amazing. What do you think? Have you seen TheInsiders vid clips on this kid?
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 1:32:54 PM)
Hi guys...about Stewart... I probably know as much as you guys know and not a bit more. I don't even have him on my potential radar screen at this time. I think it's nothing more than a pipedream...sort of like Jeff Byers last year and Dan Doering this year. I would worry more about getting a guy like Justin King, someone we at least have a shot with right now. King can play running back or DB. I'm certain he had to be impressed watching Ginn and his buddy Lyons in the Big 33 game. So if we're more involoved in the Stewart sweepstakes then that's a good thing but I'm not holding my breath right now.
MBuck37 (Jul 29, 2004 1:33:20 PM)
Gary do we have any interest in Robiskie, Orton or any of the top WR's in Ohio and around the Country? How long until AMW becomes a Buckeye? Do you think his Commitment is a 100% lock Thanks
osubucks22 (Jul 29, 2004 1:33:22 PM)
Gary, why the lack of interest in Greg Orton? I've seen him a couple times and he is very solid.
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 1:39:00 PM)
Hi guys...I also get chastised every time I've used the 'L' word in the past but unlike I was certain with guys like Ginn and Freeman last year (and Fred Davis), I'm not 100% certain on AMW although I do believe he will be a Buckeye in the end. All signs and indications point to AMW being a Buckeye next year. I personally like Orton but it doesn't look like the Bucks are ga-ga over him at this time. I'm also big into Robiskie because of the NFL genes to go along with his obvious ability as a receiver. He's been around the game his entire life. I think his upside is enormous. But I've heard glowing remarks about Orton from the Glenville guys who have gone against him. They had the highest praise for Hartline and for Orton. I guess we will wait to see what Amos does first and then the chips will fall from there at receiver.
ToledoBucknutty (Jul 29, 2004 1:39:13 PM)
Good afternoon Gary...and Kirk! Just wondering if you had a "latest" on Antwone Hight? Is he going to get eligible?
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 1:44:28 PM)
Hi Bucknutty...thanks for recognizing Kirk because he does so much work that goes unrecognized and he's such a big part of what Bucknuts is becoming. Duane probably knows the Hight situation as well as anyone and it just doesn't look too good right now from all that I know. I think you have a better chance of throwing snowballs in Florida than there is of Hight being at Ohio State or any other D-I university. He is making progress, I've been told but that is all relative when you look at where he had to come from. He's a tremendous talent, on both sides of the ball, but he has a struggle to make it to say the least. He would indeed be a top 10 or even 5 prospect in Ohio at defensive end if his academics were in good shape. I hope to see him on a couple of occasions this season.
Chip (Jul 29, 2004 1:45:14 PM)
After talking to Rico McCoy, how would you rate our chances in landing him?
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 1:49:39 PM)
Call me naive...I played that role quite well with James Bryant last year...but Rico McCoy sold me on becoming a Buckeye with one phone call. His knowledge of OSU's program was so immense and he even told me...I'm paraphrasing.."I haven't even met Tressel yet." He mentioned how much he would like to play with Marcus Freeman in the future and he mentioned how impressed he is with what Corny Green has been telling him about OSU. I think it's a two-horse race between OSU and Miami and I see us with a big lead at this time. But again, that's JMHO!
bucks4fun (Jul 29, 2004 1:50:28 PM)
Hi Gary, I saw where Greg Keys of Bellevue ran a sub 4.4 at the NW camp. This seems to be a big improvement. What kind of season does he need to start getting some big school offers? Last I knew, he was right around 200 lbs
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 1:53:54 PM)
I like Greg Keys a lot because he has the bigger body and he still can run very well. I think he needs to start out the season big and be durable and produce big numbers and someone will have a schollie waiting for him at the end of the season. He passes the look test that's for sure and I'm certainly looking forward to seeing him play somehow this season.
osubucks22 (Jul 29, 2004 1:54:07 PM)
Outside of AMW, Ringer, Hight, and Lenix, what Ohio guys do you see the Buckeyes getting in on?
osubucks22 (Jul 29, 2004 1:54:17 PM)
add daniels to my last question
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 1:59:29 PM)
Curtis Smith for one. At least one more offensive lineman. I'm keeping an eye on Brandon Long and Greg Keys. I'd like to see Tyrell Sutton get a decent look but I know that won't happen. Marcus Council is worthy of a look but nothing will come of it. Bruce Hampton and Brad Jones are worthy of a look and I think if Jones is patient, he might get one. And depending on what Amos does there could be another instate receiver like Robiskie or Orton.
Madler6808 (Jul 29, 2004 1:59:39 PM)
Why is OSU not pursuing that many RB's. I know that many people feel that wells is a "silent verbal", but It is not wise to put all your eggs in one basket. Is there not many RB's to choose on a national scale. Ross and hall are gone after next year and then it looks like nothing but RS and true freshman. Have you heard anything on Ira coming back. Thanks
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 2:06:53 PM)
At the Big 33 presser...JT certainly didn't rule out Ira coming back or Louis for that matter in the distant future but the I would think Ira could eventually find his way back on the roster sooner rather than later. But yes I believe we need at least two and probably three in this class. Ringer has to be a part of it and if Wells already might be that's two solid guys. Give me a bigger guy in state or out and I'll be happy. I personally don't know Wells status with OSU other than it looks favorable but I'd like to nail down a verbal or two at running back before long. Please don't put any words in my mouth about Louis but JT had a star running back at YSU that got in legal trouble after his freshman year and was back on the team as a fifth-year senior to help win a national title in '94 so the precedent has been sent.
buckeyenole (Jul 29, 2004 2:07:03 PM)
Hi Gary! Have you heard anything about Justin King? Is he really interested in us?
Kirk (Jul 29, 2004 2:07:25 PM)
buckeyenole asks "Have you heard anything about Justin King? Is he really interested in us?"
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 2:12:52 PM)
Hi buckeyenole... I've been trying to get Justin King on the phone for some time now but have missed him for one reason or another. I'll bet he's interested after being at the Big 33 game Saturday. I can't say for sure what I think until I talk to him but I think we have a shot at him.
MBuck37 (Jul 29, 2004 2:13:10 PM)
Opinions vary but do you think that Jamario Oneal could a better Cornerback than Teddy Ginn Jr? Besides AMW are there any other Blue Chip Defensive Backs flying under the radar in Ohio that we aren't aware of that haven't committed elsewhere ala B. Harrison. Also of all our recruits that are coming in this year who will see the most playing time besides Teddy Ginn.
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 2:21:47 PM)
I've made my opinion perfectly clear on Jamario O'Neal many times already and will be glad to state it once again. I watched him play his first game back last year and he was at safety and he was ready to come forward and make big contact to the point of missing the big hit on an occasion or two. I think it's more instinctive for him to come up from his safety position and make the big hit than it would be to be a cornerback and and play the run second. The bottom line is that he's physically and mentally better suited to play the run than the pass although I think he's gifted enough to excel at either position. But no O'Neal cannot be a better cornerback than TGII, IMHO. Ginn is the total package at the position. Justin King would really be one of the few other DB's were interested that haven't committed yet as are Brad Jones and Bruce Hampton. And besides Ginn...Freeman, Lyons and I'm going to say Skinner is going to be the sleeper of the class as far as playing time. Hoobler could play but why not redshirt his with the depth we have at LB.
osufan25 (Jul 29, 2004 2:22:05 PM)
Hey Gary! What is the latest on javon ringer and do you see OSU getting in on any other running backs besides Ringer and Wells? I read on here yesterday that the #1 running back in the country may take a look at OSU.
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 2:25:26 PM)
Again guys like Stewart, Sutton, Keys, Dennis Underwood and even Oakley are all legitimate candidates but I'm sure others like Collins will surface before the recruiting season ends. The latest on Ringer is that he is very much interested in Ohio State and he will be very patient while he waits on an offer.
Dan (Jul 29, 2004 2:25:42 PM)
Do you see Haw or Pittman getting significant time this year? I know we struggled last year with a lot of negative plays from our running game.
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 2:28:16 PM)
Right now I would say that Pittman will get significant playing time and I would redshirt Haw if possible. I'm not opposed to playing Haw but unless there's an injury to Ross, Hall or Pittman, I would redshirt Haw. And people that know him well tell me he would do it no problem. And from getting to know Haw well, I too think although he would like to play, he would indeed redshirt he was asked to.
daytonbuckeye (Jul 29, 2004 2:28:24 PM)
This might be a tough question to answer, but looking at the current verbals OSU currently has and the possiblity of Wells, McCoy, Ringer, Daniels, plus others do you see OSTATE have a top 5 or top 3 class this year? Thanks for all the hard work.
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 2:32:50 PM)
Hi daytonbuckeye...yes I think there's a chance with Boone and O'Neal and the others we already have, and the chances of landing AMW and the guys you mentioned there and Doug Worthington and Justin King would bode well for a top 5 class. We're a consensus top 10 no doubt when it's all said and done but adding a few of those guys just mentioned and maybe even Ronnie Wilson or Cushing also would propel us even higher.
rbuck (Jul 29, 2004 2:32:55 PM)
Hi Gary, I've been hearing all this about Ginn Jr. in the Big 33 game as a receiver. When his career is said and done, in your opinion, will he be known more as a WR or DB??
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 2:37:06 PM)
DB...WR will be his hobby! His speed will be diminished as a receiver at the next level and there is always a chance of him dropping a ball like he did on a crucial third down play in the Big 33 game (his dad wasn't happy about that one) or even fumbling the ball on a big hit, but his skills as top-notch, lock-down corner will only become enhanced with greater competition. "The First pick of the 2007 NFL Draft...Ted Ginn, cornerback...Ohio State."
GaryHousteau (Jul 29, 2004 2:38:58 PM)
Thanks for the chat guys...please post any questions on the Insiders message board as Kirk stated and I'll get to them when I can. Have a great day and smile!
