timbucktwo (Aug 5, 2004 1:05:43 PM)
Are they going to lose daniels to Oklahoma?
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 1:07:45 PM)
Hi timbucktwo...like the name... I'm guessing that Daniels stays at home when it's all said and done. Duane seems to be tracking Daniels the closest and he seems to indicate that OSU is more or less the place to beat, not Oklahoma. He's seen OSU so many times and he knows what it's all about compared to Oklahoma. I think he's a Buckeye in the end.
Toledo Pete (Aug 5, 2004 1:08:15 PM)
Did Malcolm Jenkins from Jersey Verbal?
MADBUCKEYE (Aug 5, 2004 1:08:35 PM)
What do you think of new verbal m. Jenkins?
osubuckeyes2731 (Aug 5, 2004 1:08:40 PM)
do you know anything about Malcolm Jenkins.....and is there any chance for us to get both AMW and Oatis
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 1:13:06 PM)
Hi Toledo Pete..that is an affirmative on Jenkins...I like the size and speed of Jenkins and he obviously showed his wares well at OSU's advanced camp. Besides it's a good get for Hazel to make his presence known in the east for OSU. I like his potential but don't know enough to comment on his play at this time. Steve reported that he had the second fastest 40 time at the camp he was at, second to Fred Lenix of Glenville so I like that. I still think we have a great shot at AMW and Oatis is still in the running obviously but he may be on hold at the moment. We need Lenix and Daniels in the fold and then I'll worry about a guy like Oatis later. AMW will likely be a Buckeye eventually.
timbucktwo (Aug 5, 2004 1:13:26 PM)
Should we be worried about o'neal?
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 1:15:31 PM)
Not a concern in the world about O'Neal. I know O'Neal well. I just visited with him Sunday at Teddy Ballgame's graduation party. I talked with his father. I talked with Coach Ginn as well. O'Neal is as solid as a rock for OSU no matter anything else you hear. Same with Alex Boone. I thought I'd throw that out there before that gets asked. Smile!
Rodney Bailey (Aug 5, 2004 1:15:50 PM)
Does the commitment today of Malcolm Jenkins signify the end to our recruitment of CB's this year?
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 1:18:16 PM)
Hi Rodney Bailey... a big fan of his I'm guessing! I don't know if we can squeeze any more DB's onto our team so that likely means goodbye to Brad Jones and Bruce Hampton and any other instate DB's!
edbuck51 (Aug 5, 2004 1:19:03 PM)
Do you think Barrington Edwards and Johnathan Stewart are on the board, or are they just mentioning the Bucks to raise their stock?
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 1:20:21 PM)
Hi edbuck...I don't know their reasons for mentioning OSU but the likelihood of seeing either of them in scarlet and gray is unlikely, IMO.
redondo (Aug 5, 2004 1:20:33 PM)
Hi Gary - Decipher Tressel-speak for me please. What does each QB have to show to get the nod as the starter? Is the playing field level, particularly for Boeckman and Smith? Thank you.
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 1:26:43 PM)
Good question redondo...First of all I believe from what I've heard that Zwick is the safest of all options so that carries the greatest weight in JT's world. Secondly, I'm hearing in so many words that none of them are close to having a full grasp of the offense at this time and that will only develop with game experience. It all comes down to who will make the fewest mistakes and who can put his team in the best position to make a positive play at the line of scrimmage. I'm comfortable with Zwick starting until he falters and Smith coming in from the bullpen. We all know that JT likes to stick with his starter until he's nearly incompetent so I think we will see a whole bunch of Zwick unless he stinks up the joint.
Toledo Pete (Aug 5, 2004 1:27:08 PM)
Is there an academic problem with Javon Ringer? Why hasn't he been offered? He seems like a power big ten back.
swiftbuck (Aug 5, 2004 1:27:19 PM)
Ringer looks like a stud not to pass on. How long with it be before osu pulls the trigger on this guy?
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 1:30:36 PM)
About Ringer... I think it's academic that Ringer will get an offer from OSU and he will be a Buckeye but they are just making sure that the GPA will be where it needs to be a year from now. He took a summer school English class and got an A so that bodes well for his situation and I'm certain he'll be a top student his senior year as well. JT can't take another hit to his graduation percentage and the admissions people are clamping down accordingly. Everybody knows Ringer is a stud and he's willing to be very patient. He just needs to up that GPA another notch or two to make sure he will be admitted. We need to be patient as well.
nbuc7 (Aug 5, 2004 1:30:51 PM)
Speaking of Lenix...any news as to whether OSU has offered, or if he is interested?
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 1:34:27 PM)
Hi nbuc7...no, Lenix has not been offered yet but he is interested. The only way he won't be a Buckeye is if he doesn't get an offer from OSU. But there just seems to be a lot of uncertainty around Lenix right now. It's hard to explain. No one seems to know for sure what his status is with OSU right now. I think Ohio State just wants to make sure he has a solid senior season on the field, in the classroom and in his personal life as we all know that Lenix is trying to raise a son in addition to being a student athlete. There's a lot on his plate right now.
Brutus10 (Aug 5, 2004 1:34:48 PM)
Gary, How do you see our WR and RB recruiting shaping up for this year? How many are we going to take of each, any names that you think are close to a lock and anyone that we're on already talking about.
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 1:39:30 PM)
Hi Brutus... I believe the instate WR pecking order is Amos, Robiskie and Orton in that order. I don't know if there is that Jarrett type receiver from OOS that we really covet so I'm waiting to see how our instate situation plays out first. At running back, I think the pecking order is Wells, Ringer and then wait until the season to look at a third back like maybe a Simpson or a Keys or an Oakley or whoever else may pop up on the radar at that time. Let's get the first two and be happy with that.
osubuckeyes2731 (Aug 5, 2004 1:39:49 PM)
What are our Chances with Mo Wells??? Are we leading??? Do you think he will be a Buckeye in the end?
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 1:43:04 PM)
Hi osubuckeyes2731...that's a lot of letters and numbers in your name...I think our chances with Mo Wells are very good, at this time, and because of the family situation in Columbus I believe we are the leaders and, at this particular, I think he will be Buckeye in the end. And I think the OSU staff feels good about Wells as well right now.
Brutus10 (Aug 5, 2004 1:43:43 PM)
Gary, Not to be petty, but with Michigan getting the extra week of practice why didn't Tressel petition to get an extra week? With all of the young players we have, it would seem to make sense to try.
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 1:46:53 PM)
Hi Brutus...I'm certain that would have been too much of a preseason without a game. Sure the extra reps would have been good for a young team but they could also lose concentration over an extended period of time without a game. JT will have his team well prepared for Cincinnati come week one...I'm confident of that. The extra week just gives Michigan an extra week to suffer an injury!
nbuc7 (Aug 5, 2004 1:47:22 PM)
Hey Gary - Have you heard anything as to the development of Marcel Frost at TE? Is he coming along well, or will guys like Rory Nicol and Chad Hoobler have a chance to step in and get a shot at that second TE spot? Thanks!
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 1:52:46 PM)
Hoobler is likely headed to defense from the outset so that eliminates him. Chad told me that the defensive coaches want him over there but they just don't know if it will be on the inside or outside at linebacker yet. I say he's a young Matt Wilhelm with a potential of being a Katzenmoyer. But make no mistake. He could be a great TE as well. Nicol is a rugged and athletic TE, he ran the 110 hurdles in high school. He will be a pleasant addition to the position. Frost is just a superior athlete and is a wonderful two-way prospect. He has that athleticism and ability that Irizarry brought to the table. Frost will be a great complement to Hamby and will become a star in his own right sooner rather than later. Nicol is destined for greatness as well at tight end. I think the TE position is in great shape with just those three guys. Yes, Nicol will see the field as well this year.
daytonbuckeye (Aug 5, 2004 1:52:53 PM)
Gary, which OOS prospects do you believe we have a shot at landing? I know you just stated Mo Wells, but what about Rico McCoy, Sean Oatis and others? Also, with Justin King being a PA guy, do you believe that the Big 33 game this year could have swayed his opinion of Ohio State? I know he is moderately interested but I would think with all the talent in that game going to OSTATE would entice any young man. Thank you!
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 1:58:46 PM)
Hi daytonbuckeye...I sure do believe, almost without a doubt that Rico McCoy will be a Buckeye a year from now. I've gotten really strong vibes about his affinity for the Buckeyes but like he told... "Miami is Miami." I confidently think McCoy will be a Buckeye. With AMW and Jamario O'Neal in the fold... Oatis is still a possibility for sure. I'm glad King attended the Big 33 game so he could see for himself that the two best talents on the field, Ginn and Lyons, are going to Ohio State. I wouldn't exclude OSU from being in the running until late with King. Simpson from Harrisburg is in the running I would guess as well. We need to get a couple of PA guys again this year to keep the momentum going there. I'm sure we will keep hearing about guys as the season goes on. Derek Hardman is a tight end/tackle prospect from West Virginia who is underrated. Oakley, a running back out of North Carolina is also a name to keep an eye on.
sdbuckeye (Aug 5, 2004 1:58:53 PM)
Under what circumstances would be employ Ginn as a WR? I'd also like to know what you think the chances are of Dukes and Lyon getting minutes in the spot opposite Holmes.
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 2:05:57 PM)
Hi sdbuckeye... I see Lyons getting big time minutes period and if Dukes is better than Lyons then God Bless the Buckeyes! Lyons is so talented and even better, he's so confident. Look at his average per catch - 33 yards in high school. His average TD catch was 40 some yards. Look at his big plays in the Big 33 game. He's a Mike Williams type of receiver. He is a bonafide star as a wide receiver even in this offense. He's a safe target for Jim Tressel to use. Ginn is Ginn...when you need a big play...the ball needs to be in his hands. He's Mr. Excitement. He can do it all. He is the most spectacular high school football player, by far, that I have ever laid my eyes on. If it sounds like hyperbole...then all I can say is just watch. Ginn is on another level, on both sides of the ball and in the return game, and Lyons is almost right there with Ginn. I only hope our offense will take advantage of these two immensely talented, not ordinary by any means, individuals. Ginn needs to play on offense in
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 2:09:24 PM)
To finish my ending that got cut on Ginn and Lyons... I think Ginn will eventually settle in on defense at corner like Gamble did and he will be an NFL cornerback and Lyons will be an NFL receiver...no question.
TazMania (Aug 5, 2004 2:06:34 PM)
Are Fox and Ross the Captains for 2004-2005 since Tressel took them to Chicago this week?
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 2:08:18 PM)
Hi tazmania... I don't know if they are officially the captains but I would think that they need to be two of them for certain.
DuckOfDeath (Aug 5, 2004 2:08:42 PM)
Do you think Greg Keys from Bellevue will get and offer? There has to be room for an athlete that is 6'1", 205 lbs, runs a 4.4 forty, and is the Div 2 state runner up in the 110 hurdles.
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 2:12:44 PM)
Hi Duck of Death... about Keys...yes I think he is a tremendous athlete and is a guy that has to be taken seriously, especially if he goes nuts at Bellvue this year. He was disappointed he lost in the 110 hurdles and I''m sure he was expecting to win that event. I'm a big Keys fan, I like him a lot. He's got a good body and is a bigger back with speed that OSU isn't pursuing at this time. Dennis Underwood from Louisville St. Thomas Acquinas is another back with good speed that is a solid prospect.
daytonbuckeye (Aug 5, 2004 2:13:15 PM)
Gary, In your opinion, why does it seems like neither Zwick and Smith has stepped up to solidify the QB position? I can only imagine the amount of pressure these guys are facing this year. Being the QB after the success Krenzel and McMullen enjoyed has to be paramount. What about Todd Boeckman, will he see any minutes on the field? Based on articles I've read it does seem like Coach Tressel will give him an equal opportunity. Thank you!
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 2:18:16 PM)
I personally don't think Boeckman will see a down this year for two reasons...one is that other year of separation and two is how often do you see JT go with a backup let alone a third stringer. Even if the backup shines...he goes back to being a back up. I think JT will settle on a starter for week one and he will be the guy even if the boos echo down from Ohio Stadium. I'm just kind of hearing that neither guy has the real QB saavy that you would expect them to have by this time. So with all things being equal...JT will always go with safe rather than not as safe! Zwick wins the battle and war by default...unless Smith has an unbelievable preseason.
osurfc (Aug 5, 2004 2:18:31 PM)
Hi Gary, when ever the TE position is talked about rarely is Jason Caldwell mentioned. I know he was a project coming out of high school, but he is now a fifth year senior with great physical tools. Do you think he has developed enough to see significant playing time? If not, what is holding him back?
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 2:23:56 PM)
Hi osurfc...It's true that Caldwell was a project coming out of high school but he has tremendous physical attributes and he's the perfect candidate to step up and have that senior year beyond everyone's expectations. But it still seems that Caldwell is a work in progress and he can't find his niche at tight end or any other position at that matter. I'm not even sure he'll be at tight end yet this year or not but I would think if he is, that Caldwell himself knows the opportunity is there if he can go for it, be it a blocker or pass catcher at tight end. With Hamby out front, OSU only needs a complementary guy and the spot is wide open. It's now or never for Caldwell obviously. I'd like to see him be that Stafford type of senior that finds his way into the regular lineup somehow.
MADBUCKEYE (Aug 5, 2004 2:24:10 PM)
What do you think our greatest position of need is right now?
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 2:28:09 PM)
Hi Madbuckeye...Quarterback! I think the line will be a serviceable unit, Hamby is a solid tight end, the backfield is more than adequate and the potential to have a solid receiving corps is there also. We need a quarterback to be the straw that stirs the drink. The defense will rock you like never before from week one until the Bowl game, unless our offense keeps them on the field all game. So quarterback is our greatest position of need that needs to produce going into this season. Some might argue offensive line and they have a valid arguement but I think we'll have a good group up front this year.
flydell (Aug 5, 2004 2:28:11 PM)
What is OSU's chances of landing another OOS lineman, either Wilson or Doering?
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 2:30:34 PM)
Hi flydell...I'd say our chances are much better with Wilson than they are with Doering...I think we're just getting a cursory look from Doering. I'm pretty sure we won't have an instate lineman in the fold until we know what Wilson is going to do. We have a decent shot with Wilson I would say. We already have three studs in the stable right now.
TazMania (Aug 5, 2004 2:31:27 PM)
How does the timing work with Schoenhoft coming in and Boeckman being spaced out another year? Does OSU need another QB this year and how do they space Boekman, Schoenhoft, Hartline, and Miles Schlichter?
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 2:36:40 PM)
About the quarterbacks. Boeckman still has five years to play four if he redshirts this year and Schoenhoft will have five to play four as well when he comes in as well. Zwick and/or Smith have three years at the helm right now so the new group of Boeckman, Schoenhoft, Hartline and Schlichter since you asked about them will all battle for an open spot in three years. Boeckman will be a junior, Schoenhoft a sophomore and Hartline and Schlichter redshirt freshmen if I've done my math correct. So they'll have a solid stable with one this year and two next year.
alabama buckeye (Aug 5, 2004 2:31:30 PM)
With our inroads into Western Pa do you feel we will net any other guys from there this year? Are we to believe that we will only take one QB in this class? Why not a more urgent need to get a few more RBs signed? We seem to be taking a very conservative approach to running backs this year. Why is that? What does JT know that we don't? Are we done with DBs besides AMW for the year? How many more OLs do we sign this year and will that be an Ohio guy?
GaryHousteau (Aug 5, 2004 2:44:30 PM)
Hi alabama buckeye...I'm hoping for King first and foremost but not counting on him. There's not a whole lot of prominent names in Pa. we're looking at now but Lyons or Nicol weren't very prominent at this time either last year. I think Daniels is working hard under the radar and we will see more talented Pa. guys showing up on our radar soon. Simpson is one running back candidat for instance. *** I believe we only need one QB this year*** I believe we will have two if not three RB's this year...Wells, Ringer and a third possibly... I think JT is pretty confident that Wells and Ringer are going to be Buckeyes in the end so there's no big rush for a third right now***We need AMW for sure but I'm not certain were done with DB's overall... we could use some more LBs to come on board....maybe Daniels and Lenix are two guys that will help us fill any voids on defense***and I would like us to get one more instate and one out of state OL in this class...Can never have too many and attrition or graduation usually
