Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau

In today's club chat with Gary Housteau, we talked about the latest recruiting news Gary has picked up from his trip around the state, this year's Buckeye squad, and much more. The transcript is available now.

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 1:05:08 PM)
Hi everyone...are you ready for some football? High School starts next week already and then our beloved Bucks on the 4th of Sept. It's time to kickoff another chat session now.

CJ (Aug 19, 2004 1:05:52 PM)
On the article with Rob S and his mom (yeah it was a while back) . Does it surprise you guys at all with the rudeness and anger to which the coach's that Rob turned down reacted? I recall that one of them said he was going to waste his arm at OSU , basically. His mother said a few others were pretty mad too. Your opinion's?

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 1:08:13 PM)
Hi it doesn't at all. Over the recent years I've spoken with a couple of recruits who have shared their experiences with me about what happened after they committed and some have been shocking to say the least. I've heard of one instance when a particular head coach punched a brutus buckeye doll right in the recruit's own living room for instance.

edbuck51 (Aug 19, 2004 1:08:18 PM)
Is Mike Kudla going to be OK?

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 1:09:22 PM)
Hi edbuck...from what I've heard from a distance...yeah he should be okay with a little extra precaution. Jay Richardson needs to be ready at all times this year for sure.

MBuck37 (Aug 19, 2004 1:09:27 PM)
Good Afternoon Gary and Kirk. Is there an update on AMW? Whom do you feel will be our next committ will be? How soon will they committ? THanks

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 1:12:20 PM)
Hi MBuck...if you stick around and read my latest trip around Ohio tour that will be posted later today there's a good chance you might get that first question partially answered. As far as our next commitment goes...I'm not certain of that at all because I don't know of any that are imminent. I will guess and say Andre Amos will commit by the third game. Just a guess.

philbuck (Aug 19, 2004 1:13:11 PM)
I was wondering if any one else saw LSU practice on ESPN a few days ago? Don't you think the national tv coverage gives them unfair recruiting advantage? Was Ohio State given the same opportunity?

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 1:16:23 PM)
Hi philbuck... a nice story in Sports Illustrated certainly helps out the cause as well for them and USC. But to the victors go the spoils. I don't begrudge them at all for their success or their resulting publicity from it. Now if it was just a random interview or not I don't know, I have been a little too busy to even watch ESPN these days...sorry.

redondo (Aug 19, 2004 1:16:32 PM)
Hi Gary - On tour trip around Ohio, what is the most surprising thing (football -related, of course, unless there is something really compelling that's non-football) you have discovered/encountered? Thank you.

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 1:21:00 PM)
Hi redondo. I'll have to say that I didn't realize just how small Brandon Harrison was until I saw him at practice in full pads. I've seen Brandon in person before, a couple of times for that matter, but I was almost taken aback at his size when you consider he'll have to cover guys 6-3 on a regular basis. That's just a testament to his true natural ability as a DB becuase size is definitely one thing he is lacking. But I really like Brandon a lot and I'm happy that he'll be going to a school like ND.

edbuck51 (Aug 19, 2004 1:21:08 PM)
Chris Wells sounds like a bright young man. Sounds like he is going to evaluate everyone before he decides. Do you agree?

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 1:27:14 PM)
I really like Chris Wells off the field as much as I like him on it. But last week I felt, for the first time, the Michigan fence that Ohio State is going to have to kick down. At this very early stage...I really feel it looks better for Michigan than it does for Ohio State. And I'm basing that on not only some of the answers he gave me but from his body language. But already I've swung from Michigan, to Ohio State and right now back to Michigan. Maybe it just has to do with the timing of my interviews. Right now...edge Michigan. But again he's a very impressionable young man and Michigan is making a real good impression on him right now.

MBuck37 (Aug 19, 2004 1:27:24 PM)
Is there any reason why there has not been an offer made to Freddie Lenix? Is it his grades? Do we really have an interest in him? Thanks

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 1:31:26 PM)
From what I've been told, Ohio State definitely has an interest in Freddie Lenix but the situation is comfortable enough to wait and see how his season goes, how his grades go and even how his personal life goes. Lenix was close to quitting school at one point in the spring to nobly take care of his son. His heart wasn't in it and the Ginn Sr. had to urge him back to school and athletics. In the end, OSU can afford to be patient with Lenix and I think that is basically the understanding the two sides share right now. But he'll open up everyone's eyes again this football season, I'm certain of that.

bucksfan7 (Aug 19, 2004 1:31:43 PM)
Hello Gary.... I would like to thank you for all of your recent posts with some of our recruits! What is your gut feeling on Freddie Lenix? Also on Daniels? Again thank you for all of the updates... and Go Bucks!

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 1:37:10 PM)
Hi Bucksfan7...again about Lenix, I don't the situation is as dismal as it looks right now. Lenix is Ohio State's for the taking when the time is right. OSU is just being extremely cautious with all of the kids they're recruiting these days. So don't fret too much over Lenix and go see Glenville play if you get a chance. About me crazy but I was pretty happy with the way he spoke about Ohio State compared with all of the doom and gloom that I've been reading about his recruitment. I don't think Oklahoma is nearly as sure of a thing as some people think he is and I also don't think Ohio State is out of it like some people think they are. He hasn't even been to Oklahoma yet. He told me 50-50 right now, face-to-face and I'll take him at his word right now. But make no mistake, he likes Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes a lot....And you're welcome!

E$ (Aug 19, 2004 1:37:15 PM)
Gary, do you think that Jamario O'Neil is as good as Derrick Williams? Also with Glenville having so many stud players over the years, why haven't they won a state title?

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 1:41:59 PM)
Hi Emoney...I have no way of knowing how good Derrick Williams is but JO is the real deal. Again, do yourself a favor and join me at Mentor High School on week one and see for yourself. Glenville scrimmages Shaker Heights on Saturday afternoon and I don't know if I should go there or to Ohio State's scrimmage? I've been asked that second question a lot, even by a father of one of the OSU players who I respect tremendously just this past week. The only answer I can possibly is that they are learning how to win as every year goes by. This is their best team yet, even without TGII, and if they don't win a few playoff games this year then hopefully I'll have a better answer for you. I don't know if winning is truly the top priority at Glenville although it is important to them, don't get me wrong about that.

BlueChipPoster (Aug 19, 2004 1:42:32 PM)
Do you plan on contacting Rico McCoy in the near future? We really need a couple LB's in this class and he has to be on the top of the list. Still feel confident we land him?

MBuck37 (Aug 19, 2004 1:42:38 PM)
Gary I live in the MD/D.C. area and I am going to see Derrick Williams and Rico McCoy play this year. Is R.McCoy going to be a Buckeye in the end? Do we have a snowballs chance at Derrick Williams becuse I know that Cornelius Green OSU QB #7 who also lives in this area has really been talking with D Williams dad about OSU. Or is that pie-in-the-sky wishful thinking...Thanks

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 1:47:21 PM)
Hi BlueChipPoster ...yes I do plan on keeping in contact with Rico McCoy and I'll update his progress through the season. He was a real good young guy to speak to over the phone because of his knowledge he has of OSU already. I felt really positive that OSU could/would get this kid in the fold next year. And MBuck...if I have to guess right now I say yes to McCoy and No to Williams. I think Williams is pie-in-the-sky as far as his chances of coming to OSU but you never know. MBuck e-mail me at and keep me posted on those two guys from your end.

philbuck (Aug 19, 2004 1:47:32 PM)
HiGary, it was a live one hour coverage of practice for LSU. Some how I doubt that Ohio State was given the opportunity after they won their national championship. In your opinion do any of our quarterbacks look good enough to lead our team to a big ten title?

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 1:52:08 PM)
Hi philbuck...Yes I do think either of our quarterbacks are capable of leading us to a Big Ten title and even further because JT will only ask of them what he knows they are capable of delivering. An unproven Craig Krenzel led us to a national championship for Christ sake. It's not about offense on this team. The punt is the most important play in the game here. Somehow I don't think USC or Oklahoma will concur with that. It's about defense and special teams and play not to lose the game on offense. Sorry...I did it again. Didn't mean to. But yes Zwick or Smith or Jim Otis Jr. if you bring him back will do fine under center at OSU.

plam (Aug 19, 2004 1:52:23 PM)
Hi Gary, will Stan White's roll be expanded this year? He appears to be a quality blocker and can handle a pass.

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 1:56:54 PM)
Hi plam...Stan White is a football player first and foremost and a skilled athlete next. White will figure prominently into this offense somewhere this season. The H-back type of role seems to fit him the best. But he's a competitor and his talent will land him securely in some definite role this season.

MBuck37 (Aug 19, 2004 1:57:05 PM)
Are we wasting our time even beginning the recruitment if Cornredge Collins or Johnathan Stewart who is said to have more than a passing interest in OSU. Should we focus more on Ringer & Wells?

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 2:01:21 PM)
Yes and Yes. I really believe both Ringer and Wells can be very easily had and I have no problems with them. We do need a big back at some point for variety be it this year or next. But we'll be okay in the interim with Pittman and Haw. I was talking to an observer at a closed practice this week and he raved about both backs. Two other names this person spoke of that aren't not common or thought much about for this season were Shaun Lane and Dionte Johnson. Both of these guys are having good camps and are being noticed by the staff.

RossfordBuck (Aug 19, 2004 2:01:45 PM)
Hey Gary. Nader Abdallah. Did you ever visit him or see him play during his recruitment? I heard his father and brother were sort of managing recruiting for him. Think he'll be one of the tops of this class?

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 2:04:40 PM)
Hi Nader was never a guy on my radar I have to admit but I have heard some good stuff about him from some of the other freshmen who were around him this summer in Columbus. He looks the part which is good and I'm looking forward to his future at OSU but I hardly doubt he'll be a factor this year. If he can be a Tim Anderson or Quinn Pitcock type then I'll be more than happy with him. But really, even now, I don't know much about him.

philbuck (Aug 19, 2004 2:04:54 PM)
Is there a reason that you know of why we have not offered Javon Ringer? he seems good enough to me to warrant an offer and then see who commits first, him or Maurice Wells.

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 2:09:19 PM)
I think Ringer likely not get offered until the first semester grades come out, unfortunately. I believe it's completely an academic issue and OSU is just crossing their T's and dotting their I's on this before he actually gets the offer. I also believe Ringer and his people are fully aware of where he stands with Ohio and I fully expect him to be a Buckeye by this time next year. If he's not I'll be completely surprised. It may not even happen formally until Dec. or Jan. but the offer will be there and I fully expect Ringer to be a Buckeye. Am I worried if it goes on that long. Yes, because you never know, but at the same time I'm really not.

BlueChipPoster (Aug 19, 2004 2:09:25 PM)
Are you in the "Ross will have a breakout year" camp or like me do you believe one of the freshmen will have to step up this fall?

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 2:14:24 PM)
Yes I'm in that same camp as you are but if Ross doesn't deliver, then I know Pittman will. I feel very strongly about Tony Pittman. I'm certain we will see him racing down the sidelines for six many times in the next three or four years. I also think very highly of Haw and I know he will be a great back as well but the edge Pittman had from the spring is going to pay huge dividends for him and for us. But I do expect Ross to be given every opportunity to be the senior member of this team he's suppose to be in this offense. I'm very happy with our backfield including Mo Hall for leadership and some occasional production from him. I can't count Mo out!

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 2:17:03 PM)
For clarification, I do believe Ross will have a breakout year on that last question. I expect him to but I also expect Pittman will have a breakout year as well.

philbuck (Aug 19, 2004 2:15:48 PM)
Gary...Point made about our quarterbacks! Since you brought up punting do you feel we have enough skill at that position to play the field position battle that JT likes?

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 2:20:47 PM)
Hi philbuck...about punting... I don't know the situation at this time but I'm hoping Josh Huston takes full advantage of this opportunity if he is indeed the one. And if it is him, being a senior, I fully expect him to answer the call. It's not easy being a senior on a JT coached team. The expectations of all seniors to provide leadership are tremendous. I've witnessed ordinary players have extraordinary years as seniors under JT at both YSU and now OSU. I'm sure Huston won't take his situation lightly. If we leave it to a could prove disastrous I'm afraid.

MBuck37 (Aug 19, 2004 2:15:59 PM)
Gary Devon Lyons looked awesome in the Big33 Game. Will he be able to contribute at all this year on Offense or Special Teams? Will Dukes, Gonzalez be able to see much PT knowing our growing depth at WR.

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 2:26:13 PM)
About Devon expectations of him are as high as kite and I expect him to have an impact sooner rather than later at OSU. He is truly a 'can't miss' wide receiver and if any can get him the ball the results will speak for itself. He without question has the greatest potential of any receiver we have on this roster right now. He is the man and he will be the man. That said...Dukes looks pretty good as well and he will see the field this year. It might be another year before Gonzo is the playmaker on offense that he can become. I think Hall needs to catch everything in his zip code early on or Lyons will be lining up opposite Holmes sooner than we think. But Hall, Lyons and Holmes can be a terrific three receiver set I believe. Devin Jordan is a player too...don't forget him.

philbuck (Aug 19, 2004 2:26:22 PM)
Gary good to talk to you! GO BUCKS!

GaryHousteau (Aug 19, 2004 2:27:21 PM)
Thanks Kirk and everyone else for participating in the chat...Next Thursday is Garfield at Hoban for me so we may have to chat Wednesday instead. High School football is here and I hope to see you at a game. Smile everyone and Go Bucks.
