Chat Transcript - Bill Conley

The online subscribers just wrapped up their first chat with ex-OSU recruiting coordinator and TEs coach Bill Conley. Coach Conley touched on several topics today and shed some light on some frequently asked questions, such as whether or not OSU gets silent verbals, how decisions are made in the offer process, and so much more. Click on this link for the exclusive comments from Coach Conley.

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:03:22 PM)
Fire away!

Mike68 (Aug 30, 2004 3:03:36 PM)
Bill- What made you jump at Mo Wells and push for an immediate scholarship offer to him w/o Tress even seeing his tape. What other back(s) would you directly compare him to.

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:04:51 PM)
We actually saw him on tape last he was special. Big play guy all the way, great hips.

chex1868 (Aug 30, 2004 3:05:39 PM)
Coach C! Great having you. Who do you see making the largest impact of this incoming freshmen class?? A lot of hype around Ginn Jr. Who do you expect to immediately contribute?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:07:22 PM)
Ginn, Lyons, Dukes, Nicol, Freeman, Pittman, Haw, and maybe Dionte Johnson all should see action.

Kirk (Aug 30, 2004 3:08:07 PM)
Question from "Cali8": "I'd like to know what the coaches think when a kid like Kenyon Buford verbally commits to OSU without having an offer."

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:09:58 PM)
Self hype is a major problem. He didn't understand an invite to a game doesn't mean an offer.

Lucky (Aug 30, 2004 3:10:47 PM)
Hi coach! Can you shed some light on the Dajuan Morgan scholarship reversal for us? Did that at all contribute to your moving on?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:13:18 PM)
I think some powers to be felt like we we're going to fill up too early, which never happens. It had little effect on my decision. I felt the timing was right for me.

philbuck (Aug 30, 2004 3:14:02 PM)
Bill...welcome to The Best Damn Website In The Land! I was sorry to see you leave OSU but you ended up at the next best place. Question...I admit that I didn't and still don't know much about John Peterson although everything I have heard is all good. How do you feel about as a coach, recruiter and your replacement. Good hire?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:16:15 PM)
John is an excellent offensive line coach and I feel he'll end up there before it is all over. He has to earn his stripes in recruiting. The caliber of athlete is different at O.S.U than the MAC.

P-Digits (HH) (Aug 30, 2004 3:16:37 PM)
Coach, could please explain the interaction between the state/area recruiting coordinator and how much influence they have in the selection process at Ohio State. Does the position coach or area coordinator have to “make a case” for a scholarship for the recruit to the other 8 coaches or is it one man that pulls the trigger.

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:19:26 PM)
Good question. It starts with the area coach, then the osition coach, the the recruiting coordinator O & D coordinators and even the head coach if necessary. It takes a unanimous vote of th

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:19:54 PM)
Not unanimous but majority of those coaches.

Kirk (Aug 30, 2004 3:20:09 PM)
Here's a question from UABuck1: "My question for Coach Conley is to ask him to tell us about the changes in the academic requirements for the football team, and to tell us how that has impacted recruiting over the last couple years. Do we have a set amount of "at-risk" kids that we can offer? Does the academic side provide enough definition to the requirements so that you know which kids you can offer, or is it so fluid that it puts the coaches in a very difficult spot with borderline kids?"

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:22:27 PM)
It's getting tougher to know which kids can get in school because things are so subjective. It makes it very difficult on the coaches. You try to keep the at risk kids down to just a hand few.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2004 3:22:44 PM)
Why did/does Ohio State have no interest in Tyrell Sutton from Hoban at all. And what's the main difference between Sutton and Javon Ringer ... and when not if will Ringer be offered?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:24:13 PM)
Sutton may be size, I know Ringer is still being evaluated this season.

coxew (Aug 30, 2004 3:24:37 PM)
Did Jarrett and/or Hart verbal or were those simply rumors?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:25:37 PM)
Jarrett did, Hart didn't.

RossfordBuck (Aug 30, 2004 3:26:10 PM)
Are you REALLY out of coaching forever? Or is there a chance you'll return some day?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:26:49 PM)
Never say never! We'll see down the road.

redondo (Aug 30, 2004 3:27:01 PM)
Hi Bill - Welcome to Bucknuts!!! Thank you for taking my question. What impact does the feedback from some offensive "skill" recruits have on OSU's ability to recruit? What adjustments, if any, do you think should be made in the offense to counter this perception that the offense is boring?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:30:20 PM)
The offensive playbook is large and we always have had many great skilled players like Gamble, Glenn, Cris Carter, etc.

Kirk (Aug 30, 2004 3:31:21 PM)
question from stemmshady: "Does the silent verbal actually exist. The word itself is an oxymoron but there is constant speculation as to whether this phenomenon happens. For example does a player ever tell you he's coming to your school for sure, but he doesn't want to make it public so that he can take all his visits and get the royal treatment? Just Curious."

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:32:02 PM)
Yes, a lot more than you can imagine.

Zeek (Aug 30, 2004 3:32:25 PM)
Bill, how much do the coaches take character into account when they recruit? How often do the coaches not recruit a player because you hear from his coach or another source that he has a poor work ethic or more serious character issues?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:33:41 PM)
If he is a good, not a great player, it means a lot. If he is great, does the good outweigh the bad?

Orlando Buckeye (Aug 30, 2004 3:33:45 PM)
First off, Welcome aboard Coach. My first question is about Defensive ends currently on the roster. Do we have any DE's that are difference makers and perhaps even NFL caliber DE's. Thanks in advance......

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:35:19 PM)
Obviously Simon Fraser but also watch out for Jay Richardson and Gholston.

bucksfan47 (Aug 30, 2004 3:35:37 PM)
Bill, what do you think coach Tressel's greatest attribute's are? Also is he as genuine, and as kind of a man as he appears to be in person, and behind the scenes?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:37:05 PM)
His greatest attribute is his work ethic.

redondo (Aug 30, 2004 3:37:30 PM)
Coach Conley - My question has to do with OSU's relationship with Tom Lemming. Do you think he has at the very least a less than objective bias toward OSU? Do you think he impacts OSU recruiting in a negative way by perhaps steering recruits away from OSU? Thank you.

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:39:35 PM)
I really don't think he does anything negative but he does encourage kids to wait till the last minute to commit. At times he actually has helped.

Zeek (Aug 30, 2004 3:39:39 PM)
Bill, how much cheating really goes on in college recruiting? Is the SEC the worst offender?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:41:41 PM)
Some schools are notorious but they usually get caught. A lot of them in the SEC. What is amazing is how the NCAA closes its eyes to certain programs.

DragonKnight (Aug 30, 2004 3:41:51 PM)
What are your thoughts on OSU's offensive struggles. Is it personel, playcalling, scheme, or a combination?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:43:41 PM)
It's probably more philosophy. Play great defense and special teams first.

mcorf (Aug 30, 2004 3:44:03 PM)
Whitner vs. Everitt, Schlegel vs. D'Andrea, Barton vs. Schaffer, Haw vs.. Pittman, Zwick vs. Smith? Your opinion ?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:47:51 PM)
Probably Everett, D'Andrea vs. pass, either vs. run. Schafer and Barton and maybe downing all playing till someone earns the spot in the heat of battle. Toss up with Haw and Pittman, one may get a redshirt if Mo Hall and Ross stay healthy....

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:49:23 PM)
About the QB's, Both will play till someone earns it. Both unproven but Zwick has the best shot. Down the road, watch out for Boeckman.

cb(great to have you here bill) (Aug 30, 2004 3:49:56 PM)
Since Silent Verbals do exist, who were some of the silent verbals to the buckeyes that you can remember?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:51:12 PM)
Pace, Katzenmoyer, etc.

Kirk (Aug 30, 2004 3:51:38 PM)
BucknutsInAnnArbor wants to know "After reading comments by kids about the recruitment process. Many kids want to end all the talk and commit early and get it all over with. How aggressive does OSU continue to recruit kids who have given a verbal to another school? Do you find that other school pick up the pace of the recruitment process with kids that verbal to OSU? Do we recruit with the same intensity a verbally committed kid to another program as other school of our status?"

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:54:27 PM)
If the kid is a great one, it's still full steam ahead. Some schools get real negative once a kid commits to another school, especially in the south.

P-Digits (HH) (Aug 30, 2004 3:54:37 PM)
Any insight on what went wrong with Fred Davis?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 3:56:52 PM)
Only USC knows the answer to that.

cb(great to have you here bill) (Aug 30, 2004 3:58:12 PM)
Who in this class(05) have you talked to? Recruits. Do you think we could land any of them, from your conversations with them in the past, before you retired ( :( )

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 4:00:51 PM)
Wells, Myers-White look good. I was disappointed that Perilloux committed to Texas. I thought we had a shot.

Kirk (Aug 30, 2004 4:01:06 PM)
A question from HeyILikedCoop: "Bill, you were there for such a long time. Who are 2 or 3 of the players who you worked with, either at your position, guys you recruited or just guys on the team, that were your favorites? Just guys who were the best to work with, guys you respected as players and people? Thanks, and I think Bucknuts has made a great hire in bringing you on board."

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 4:02:53 PM)
Hartsock, Salley, Nugent, Vrabel, Spielman, Simmons, Houser just to mention a few.

buckmark (Aug 30, 2004 4:03:13 PM)
Many of us try to follow recruiting. What could you tell us that would help us to understand how to view all the talk/rumors/etc. that we hear throughout the process. How much does all of that "chatter" truly affect the recruiting process for the coaches?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 4:05:28 PM)
It makes a coaches job harder because of the rumors. Anybody can say anything.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2004 4:05:36 PM)
How much, or to what extent, does the OSU staff monitor internet sites, particularly the two main paid sites that cover Ohio State?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 4:06:30 PM)
Fairly often, someone is assigned to do that.

mattent2b (Aug 30, 2004 4:07:03 PM)
If Zwick is able to hold off Smith in the QB race, do you see Smith moving to another position to better utilize his skills? eg, WR?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 4:08:13 PM)
No, he's a QB and you need more than one. The next guy is one play away.

Stellar (Aug 30, 2004 4:08:18 PM)
Bill, As I am sure you have been told it is great to have you as a part of the Bucknuts family. I couldn't imagine a better source for OSU Recruiting information. My question is, in all your years of high school recruiting, who is the best prospect you have ever seen out of high school?? In your opinion, who was the best prospect out of high school that OSU ever landed - Orlando Pace, Andy Katzenmoyer, Maurice Clarett, Ted Ginn, someone else?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 4:10:37 PM)
Best high school-Cris Carter, Chris Spielman, and Orlando Pace. All great in high school, all great at OSU.

P-Digits (HH) (Aug 30, 2004 4:11:11 PM)
Coach, do you think that the Football Office uses OSU’s selective admissions policy to remedy over-recruiting issues. In published admission criteria, Admissions takes into consideration, “other attributes that the student brings to the University”. Does the Football Office have the opportunity to seek “exceptions” or ask admissions to weight this criteria higher for certain recruits?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 4:13:15 PM)
No one really knows what the admission office does or is going to do. There no number of exceptions ever talked about.

touchdownbuckeyes (Aug 30, 2004 4:13:38 PM)
Coach, What's your prediction this season for the Buckeyes?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 4:15:41 PM)
Good season, soft schedule early but watch out for NC State. Maybe two losses pre bowl game.

buck (Aug 30, 2004 4:15:57 PM)
Hey Bill, any insight on why we didn't offer or at least more heavily recruit Deshaun Wynn from Reading? Kids a stud for UF, Duane thought he was in Clarett's class. Realize we had Moe and Humphries but we could use him now.

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 4:16:48 PM)
Didn't get a majority vote. I liked him.

Will (Aug 30, 2004 4:17:33 PM)
Coach, what do you think of Chris Wells as a runner. Does he project to have a greater impact on the offensive or defensive side of the ball?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 4:18:19 PM)
Offense, reminds me of Mike Wiley.

Kirk (Aug 30, 2004 4:18:35 PM)
Coach, thanks for joining us today. Last question for the day... lots of people asked -- what are your thoughts/predictions for this week's game?

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 4:20:41 PM)
If the Buckeyes don't have turnovers and play well in the kicking game - Bucks by 4 TD's

Kirk (Aug 30, 2004 4:21:13 PM)
Everyone, thanks for coming today. There were so many terrific questions, so many of which we didn't get a chance to post due to traffic. Sorry we didn't get to post everything, but remember that Coach Conley will be back to answer questions soon. Thanks so much for stopping by and if your question didn't get answered, please be sure to bring it back for the next Conley chat!

Bill Conley (Aug 30, 2004 4:21:40 PM)
