Hi everybody...week three of the high school football season tonight and week two for the Buckeyes. It's almost fall. I love talking football. Let's do it!
redondo (Sep 10, 2004 1:05:09 PM)
Gary - any ripple effect from Troy's win over Mizzou to tomorrow's game with the Herd? thank you.
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:07:12 PM)
Hi redondo...I watched the game because Brad Smith is from Youngstown Chaney High School and he's a wonderful young man. I would think that game is totally unrelated to Ohio State and Marshall.
OSUBucks22 (Sep 10, 2004 1:07:18 PM)
Gary, have you seen any surprise Ohio recruits in your travels this year?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:09:31 PM)
Hi OSUBucks22...yeah I guess the best player I've seen that isn't really being recruited by Ohio State is Marcus Council. I saw both of the first two Garfield games and he's clearly stood out as a player. He's fast, he's physical, he's got good size and he never leaves the field. He's a player. I really like him.
BuckeyeDave (Sep 10, 2004 1:09:37 PM)
Hi Gary - Speaking of high school football. My nephew, a soph, got the nod to start at QB for Princeton vs. Colerain Saturday night!
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:11:58 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...Congratulations but you have my sympathy at the same time. Not exactly the best team to have your first career start at quarterback against. Please share the name and we'll have him on our radar now. Class of 2007!
BuckeyeJoe (Sep 10, 2004 1:12:06 PM)
Do you think the coaches would like a good FB in this class and why can't they find one?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:15:29 PM)
Hi BuckeyeJoe...sure I'd always like to get a good fullback when one is available. I think they have a good one for the future with Dionte Johnson. I think he'll be a solid three-year player. When you think fullback in Ohio the first name I think is Matt Shumaker but I don't know enough about him at this time to comment on him. But yeah I'll take a fullback in this class if we can find one.
edbuck51 (Sep 10, 2004 1:15:45 PM)
What high school games are you checking out this weekend?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:18:18 PM)
Hi edbuck...I just had a change of plans...I was set to go see Ed's and Maple Heights but now that Quinn committed to NC...I don't have as much urgency to go there other than to possibly see a great football game. So I'm staying closer to home tonight to watch Brian Robiskie in action...Chagrin Falls at Liberty. I'm looking forward to seeing him. With the Buckeye game at 3:30 tomorrow that eliminates a night game on Saturday for me this week. No Glenville game for me either but that will be a rout.
OSUBucks22 (Sep 10, 2004 1:18:35 PM)
Have you seen Ringer yet this year? If not, you gotta. He looks even better than the past two years. He is something special. I've seen him twice this year already. Brandon Harrison looks pretty good too. I wish he was a couple inches taller.....
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:20:40 PM)
Hi OSUBucks22...I've seen Ringer only in the preseason when I went to Dayton to see him at practice. I will make it to see him in action this year I just don't know when yet. I really like the kid a lot and I can't wait to see him. I'm curious to see Harrison in action as well. I like both players. But sure Ringer is a priority for me at some point.
C'ville Buck (Sep 10, 2004 1:20:51 PM)
Hi Gary! Have you any knowledge of Tommy Tamaska from Centerville. He's put up 360 yards and 8 tds in two games including 224 against Troy last week. I haven't gotten out to see the Elks play yet but am looking forward to it next week.
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:23:12 PM)
Hi C'villeBuck...I'll have to consult Ohio High and see what Duane has to say about him as I have no knowledge at this time. 224 against Denlinger sounds like a pretty good thing to me. I'll keep him in mind. Touchdown Tommy (Vardell)! I'm a Browns fan! Thanks for the heads up.
edbuck51 (Sep 10, 2004 1:23:35 PM)
Can Marshall's RB gain 100 yards against the Bucks?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:24:58 PM)
I would think not. No!
labsbeabmm (Sep 10, 2004 1:25:05 PM)
Please tell me we're going to get at least one stud running back this year.
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:28:52 PM)
Hi labsbeabmn...I can't really tell you that right now. I'll be more than happy with Ringer and Maurice Wells this year but the stud is coming next year when/if Chris Wells arrives on campus. Give me a good blocking fullback and I'll be really happy with Pittman and Haw in the near future.
CJ (Sep 10, 2004 1:29:03 PM)
Why would any coach use a slow developing play as OSU did on 4th and 1 last week?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:31:27 PM)
Hi CJ...Still trying to figure that one out, sorry! It's seem like we've never been successful with a delayed type of handoff like that on short yardage.
BuckeyeDave (Sep 10, 2004 1:31:34 PM)
What will Marshall's strongest threat be tomorrow?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:34:58 PM)
I really see the game as a total mismatch unless the QB plays out of his mind. I have a lot of respect for Marshall from watching them in I-AA for many years. But JT has a solid track record against Marshall. They're quick to point out that was the Jim Donnan Marshall teams and not the Pruett-coached teams..whatever. Last year's BG team was a bigger threat than Marshall this year. I think we'll spank them pretty hard tomorrow.
edbuck51 (Sep 10, 2004 1:35:08 PM)
What are you thoughts about the verbal from Amos?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:39:10 PM)
I had a friend check him out last week against Cleveland Heights and he pretty much said that Amos was all that. I'm just in the fact-finding stages with Amos right now but from what everything I've heard about him so far...he seems to be pretty special. That's why I'm anxious to see Robiskie tonight so I'll be able to compare the two. I'd like to see Robiskie be that third receiver this year but I'm not quite sure he's at the top of their pecking order. And with the injury to Hartline..they're certain to take another receiver just in case Hartline has any complications healing. Which I don't foresee. I hope to catch Middletown in action this year at some point.
OSUBucks22 (Sep 10, 2004 1:40:16 PM)
What's up with Marcel Frost? Will we see him on the field anytime soon?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:43:04 PM)
Not sure what's up with Marcel Frost sorry. Great athlete and I have high expectations for him in the future. In the mean time I really like to Rory Nicol out on the field. Nicol is a specimen out there. I really really like this young kid's future at Ohio State. The same with Frost. Great athletic ability with both of them. With Hamby at the top of the depth chart there, the TE position is in really good hands.
edbuck51 (Sep 10, 2004 1:43:11 PM)
Are you going to check out Justin King this year, or do you think the Bucks have a slim chance?
labsbeabmm (Sep 10, 2004 1:43:17 PM)
Living here in Pittsburgh, it saddens me to hear King may go to MICH. Any encouraging words. He is telling the media here he wants to play CB since he sees that as his pro position
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:46:02 PM)
I haven't really tried consistently to hook up with King since the summer but from talking to some people who would know, it doesn't look promising. Gateway is about an hour and 15 minutes away and I have their schedule so it's a possibility that I'll go over and see him but I'm not sure if it's worth the time. I'd rather go to Woodland hills and see Wesley Lyons. I've met him up at Ohio State and he's going to be bigger than his brother. He tells me he's going to be better as well. That's a tough task. Devon is a player as we all shall see sooner rather than later.
buckeyenole (Sep 10, 2004 1:46:27 PM)
Hi Gary! I'm a late joiner, sorry if this has been asked, but have you seen Carlton Jackson's stats from the (I think it was) Stranahan Game? 15/17, 246yds, and 3TDs! Wow! Could he be BETTER than Schoenhoft? Do you think there will be room for him since we already have a QB and are in on about 17 guys for 10-11 spots most of which are needs at DL, RB, and LB. What do you think?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:51:48 PM)
HI I met CJ and Taz last week at the game and I had a brief chat with both of them. Both are extremely interested in Ohio State and I won't be surprised in any way if Wilson is a Buckeye for sure. CJ is also interested and those numbers he posted are pretty awesome on paper for sure. However I saw all I needed to of Schoenhoft in week one to know he's the guy I want at Ohio State in the future. I don't know CJ's stance on being a quarterback or if he's flexible to come in as an athlete. I was planning to contact them both after this hurricane business subsided for them. But JT likes to bring in versatile athletes so that bodes well for CJ.
homesickbuck (Sep 10, 2004 1:52:08 PM)
I'm a little concerned about Justin Zwick's arm. Most of his passes were wobbly with not much zip. Am I wrong? How do you feel about his arm strength, accuracy and a seemingly lack of ability to throw a spiral (catchability)?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 1:58:04 PM)
Hi homesickbuck...Zwick's a big boy physically and he's been playing the position for quite some time so I'm certain he can make all of the throws that he needs to at this level and in Jim Tressel's offense. That may be more relevant when he's ready for the pros. I'm sure Zwick pulled the trigger early on some passes last week cause he was anxious and he'll settle down I'm sure. He might not throw the prettiest spiral but if it gets where it needs to, that's all that matters. I'm already much more happier with him there than what we had the past three years of JT's tenure.
OSUBucks22 (Sep 10, 2004 1:58:33 PM)
Gary, have you been to see Ross Homan yet? He's another I recommend. I know it's small division, but you should really get to the Coldwater vs. Versailles matchup later this year. Homan can really play and both teams play great football.
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 2:02:04 PM)
That as well is sincerely noted. I'm going to get to learn more of Homan soon as I think he is one of my magazine assignments coming up. I am aware of Homan and I would like to see him play this year. Hopefully I'll see him in the state playoffs if they advance.
edbuck51 (Sep 10, 2004 2:02:15 PM)
Are you surprised at Massillon's start so far this season, and do you expect the beatings to continue?
edbuck51 (Sep 10, 2004 2:02:16 PM)
Why did Canton McKinley join the Federal League?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 2:08:09 PM)
I'm well versed on Massillon and McKinley. I am shocked at Massillon's start. Rick Shepas is a friend of mine and I have a hard time believing that Buchtel and Benedictine got the best of his Tigers. The community can't be happy I'm sure. Rick's a hard worker and I heard he had some talent in the lower classes, I'm just surprised there isn't any talent there now. If that's the case. I have no idea why McKinley joined the Federal league but knowing what I know about Fitch and Boardman leaving the Steel Valley Conference, it's best that I don't say anything that will ruffle any feathers. I don't see Boardman and Fitch staying in the Federal League for a very long time but what do I know!
bob (Sep 10, 2004 2:08:44 PM)
should we be at all concerned about linebackers in the upcoming class. we could lose Carpenter and Hawk to the nfl
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 2:12:25 PM)
Hi bob...for some reason I don't see us losing either Carpenter or Hawk to the NFL. Schlegel, Freeman, Kerr, Curt Lukens, Chad Hoobler and Curtis Terry and are a solid cast of LB's there now. I hope we can get Rico McCoy and I was told that Mathias from Erie Prep is a solid player. Prep played Fitch last week. Not a ton of big LB names out there this year. Not really concerned.
buckeyenole (Sep 10, 2004 2:12:49 PM)
Gary did you think that Nate Salley had a good game? He was in on 7 tackles and he had a pass break up or two, but he repeatedly FAILED to WRAP UP! Do you see that as a problem in the future, maybe even this week, or do you think it's something that's being rectified? As our last line of defense you'd really think he'd wrap up better, no?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 2:16:39 PM)
I'm a big Salley fan. He plays with a lot of intensity and he's a leader out there. Coach Snyder gave his troops a B-minus last week because of tackling and a lack of turnovers. Sure tackling is a concern and Salley might have to wrap more instead of worrying about making the big hit, but we didn't give up a TD. I'm not worried about our defense at all. Way too much talent on the field. I think we would lose Salley to the NFL before Carpenter or Hawk, but I don't we will lose any of the three right now.
jck21 (Sep 10, 2004 2:16:57 PM)
Based on the interviews with the defense posted today I predict a shut out, I think they are really pumped up. Do you feel differently after interviewing them?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 2:20:23 PM)
Hi jck21 I think the feeling after last week was that the defensive guys think they can play so much better than they did against Cincinnati. It's terribly difficult to predict a shut out because of turnovers and field goals but I don't see Marshall being any major threat on offense tomorrow. We're really good on defense and we're fast and we're physical.
buckeyenole (Sep 10, 2004 2:20:31 PM)
Do you really think that we'll take THREE wr's this year? I know Hartline got hurt but I thought his prognosis was looking good, no? If we take Smalls, he's a two way threat so could he be the answer to that conundrum?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 2:24:20 PM)
Smalls is a junior and he's on the smallish side. Not you're prototypical Big Ten receiver. He'll be a gem in next year's class but I'm not sure at what position just yet. I think we need to take one more receiver be it the Lymon kid from Indiana or Robiskie or some other Florida receiver we haven't heard from yet. But I think that was always Conley's specialty.
BuckeyeDave (Sep 10, 2004 2:24:41 PM)
Its interesting that in June/July we were worried about Ohio St's TEs and now they seem to much more solid.
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 2:28:26 PM)
And we threw Caldwell and Hoobler over to the defensive side of the ball as well. Make no mistake about it, Hoobler is a great defensive player. I've seen him play at Carrollton and I liked him a lot on both sides of the ball. He was coached up as blocker by Kirk Lowdermilk for four years so he was skilled as a blocker and as a receiver. But he's a *itch on defense as well. I hope he does redshirt and I don't know if he played or not last week. Why waste a year when he could be an All-American in his fifth year at MLB if not sooner. So we've recovered from the Irizarry debacle quite well, yes.
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 2:33:32 PM)
Yeah I was thinking Ray Smalls and he did make a sweet 73 yard touchdown catch in week one so I just thought maybe you were throwing a hypothetical at me...sorry. I've got Glenville on the brain I guess. I had thought we weren't in the picture mutually with Sean Smalls at this time. Ray Smalls is a running back/cornerback but with Tim Conner being a nasty boy at Glenville running the ball and even Raymond Fischer as the third TB, Smalls is certain to get less touches on offense and be a defensive recruit next year as a lock-down CB.
OSUBucks22 (Sep 10, 2004 2:33:13 PM)
Any word on Antwon Hight? Is he just in too big of a hole to get out of with his grades?
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 2:37:05 PM)
We'll know more about Hight after the first grading period this year but I had a nice long talk with his dad this summer and they are working hard to get the grades situation corrected. It may be too little too late but Hight definitely wants to play for OSU and his dad wants him to go there as well. It may take a JC or a prep school year but I know the Hight side of the equation wants to make it happen if at all possible. I tentatively will see GlenOak and McKinley in week four I believe. I like Hight a lot as a wreckingball defensive lineman. He lost some weight and looks good too.
GaryHousteau (Sep 10, 2004 2:37:45 PM)
Thanks to Kirk for conducting this chat and thanks to everyone who participated in it or took the time to read it afterward. I appreciate it. Go Bucks!
