GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:05:17 PM)
Hi Bucknuts...I'm listening in to while we are doing this chat because Steve is suppose to be a guest I understand. I'm ready for anything on your mind from OSU football to high school football talk. Go Bucks!

edbuck51 (Sep 17, 2004 1:04:32 PM)
Were you surprised, and are you excited about the Worthington commitment?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:07:04 PM)
Hi edbuck...I wasn't surprised because Alex Boone told me this summer that Worthington was a guy he was happy to get to know at the camp this summer and he was hoping that he was one guy that we would be able to get. So I've had him on my radar all summer and I think it's a tremendous Will Smith type of get.

dayton (Sep 17, 2004 1:07:09 PM)
What's with Amato and some of his provocative comments regarding the bucks?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:09:49 PM)
Hi Dayton...he obviously has some want-to-be issues in his 54,000 seat stadium. He gagged last year when he had us on the ropes and that's all that matters. Sure they'll be fired up and he will stoke the fire, but it will be settled on the field.

dfwbuck (Sep 17, 2004 1:09:52 PM)
How many snaps does Troy Smith get this week?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:11:16 PM)
Hi dfwbuck...baring injury... one series.

edbuck51 (Sep 17, 2004 1:11:28 PM)
With this class having a lot of commits, and being in on lots of quality players, do you think there could be some shuffling on who OSU expects LOI's from come early winter.

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:14:21 PM)
Please no more shuffling with verbal commitments already in the fold but the priority of the remaining offers may be subject to change. For instance, I'm certain Worthington's commit won't have any bearing on Lawrence Wilson, but he may have a sense of urgency to commit. I'll talk to him and his family tomorrow night in Akron. I think the staff has a good idea of who the next 7 or 8 guys will be with one or two hopefuls hanging on like Justin King for instance.

homesickbuck (Sep 17, 2004 1:14:33 PM)
What's your prediction for Saturday's game and why?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:18:51 PM)
Hi homesickbuck...I'm really going to open up myself for criticism here putting so much faith in Justin Zwick...but I've said all along he's like Craig Krenzel with big time talent...well I was wrong. He's even better than I thought now that he has control of the reins. He proved his worth on the last drive last week. I've already seen more plays in two games that have excited me more from our quarterback than almost the entire last two years. Sure he could have four picks tomorrow but the long-term prognosis under center is very bright. I like our team's chances to perform well under adverse conditions tomorrow, weather and a hostile crowd, and come back home with the victory. We're going to get better every week.

jpbucks (Sep 17, 2004 1:19:07 PM)
is ta playing this weekend

Kirk (Sep 17, 2004 1:19:16 PM)
Injury report today says he is probable

buckman (Sep 17, 2004 1:19:29 PM)
Is Mario Manningham in the hall of fame yet?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:22:23 PM)
Hi buckman...I'll take that as a comment made with your tongue planted firmly in your cheek, but if you're alluding to me being a big Manningham fan than you are absolutely correct. I think he's a tremendous talent and I'm not happy that he's going to that friggin school up north. So I'll just take your question at face value.

Schaumbuck (Sep 17, 2004 1:22:41 PM)
How many plays will the coaching staff ask Brandon Joe to participate in tomorrow against NC ST?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:25:48 PM)
Hi Schaumbuck...I'm just disappointed in not being able to count on Brandon Joe for yet another season. Very disappointed. He's no Nate Stead, thank God, but he's no Jamar Martin either. However many plays he does play in this game or in the season is just a bonus for us I guess. I had visions at one time of him being a feature back at OSU, a la Ron Dayne, when he was in high school and he's never come close to living up to that.

Seabus (Sep 17, 2004 1:25:57 PM)
Gary, not sure if this has been addressed yet but can you talk about Lawrence Wilson and where he stands. What position do you see him playing in college?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:29:33 PM)
Hi Seabus...I saw Lawrence Wilson in week 2 this year and he made plays on both sides of the ball including a 12-yard TD grab as a TE. He's an athletic, big body type kid whose better days on the gridiron are still ahead of him. The good thing about him being a TE for coach Wakefield is that he will be coached up well blocking for the run. He's in the same position that Kirk Barton was at Perry. But he's a talent and I think he can play either side of the ball but I tend to think he'll be a defensive player with his speed and athleticism. We're in it with ND and Pitt and from talking with his dad two weeks ago...I think there's a good chance he'll be on board in February.

edbuck51 (Sep 17, 2004 1:29:46 PM)
Can you tell us something about De'Angelo Haslam? He's in the two deep at CB, but I've never heard of him and he's not on the roster.

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:33:20 PM)
I noticed him making some plays in the spring game this past year but he wasn't even in the media guide in the player profiles. He played for Sax at Garfield so I need to do some homework on him...thanks for asking.

PackHater (Sep 17, 2004 1:33:27 PM)
I've never been worried about our coaches knowing what they are doing (other than some play calling) until all this concern about Snyder. Do we have reason to be concerned in your opinion?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:36:59 PM)
Hi PackHater...I'm comfortable with Mark Snyder...I've known him from back in his days at YSU and he has a strong football pedigree so I'm not concerned with him at the helm on defense. Am I missing a specific concern? Let's give this defense some time to one of their leaders isn't out there...Fox. He talked about depth all spring and now he's able to showcase his depth.

homesickbuck (Sep 17, 2004 1:37:13 PM)
What's your take on the running game? Is it the Offensive line or Lydell Ross? It seems that he has all the tools except vision and that's HUGE!!! Can that be taught?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:39:40 PM)
I think as the season goes on...we will see a distinct difference when Pittman is in and when Ross is in and that will tell you that it is not indeed entirely the line's fault. Pittman is a different animal than Ross at running back. Once Ross has space he can run well but if it's not there he can't find it. Pittman will find it fast and get down the field.

dfwbuck (Sep 17, 2004 1:40:00 PM)
Since this is NC State's first "real" game of the year, how long have they been preparing for this one?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:44:03 PM)
Obviously they have some formidable teams in their own league to worry about now but I'm sure this game has been on the calendar in big red letters since the very end of last season. There's a lot of issues between the two teams as far as players that would have or could have or should have been Buckeyes but that is secondary to the the OT loss they suffered in Ohio Stadium last year. But I'm happy that we have two consecutive games under our belt for our young QB and they played two weeks ago against a bunch of Spiders. Smile!

PackHater (Sep 17, 2004 1:44:18 PM)
Do you think Robiskie gets an offer? Do YOU think he is worthy of one?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:47:18 PM)
I love the intangibles that Robiskie brings to the table as much as his young and still developing physical skills. Yeah I like him a ton and I give him an offer and call it a class at wide receiver this year. He's just a 16-year-old young kid with a ton of upside to his game. He's a big-time student of the game already. I like the entire package.

Dozer (Sep 17, 2004 1:47:37 PM)
There seems to be some discussion with Worthington's height. Do you see him staying at DE or could a kid that tall be moved inside?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:49:50 PM)
Hi Dozer... I like him on the outside and that would seem to be his natural position. But once you get here who knows what will happen? He's here, that's all that matters.

yooperbuck (Sep 17, 2004 1:50:06 PM)
Gary, will John Kerr be ready for the big ten opener, how is he doing now that he is practicing, and do you think he will be in the dog house for a while?

Rick (Sep 17, 2004 1:50:11 PM)
what's the story with John Kerr? I noticed he is still not listed on the roster

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:55:34 PM)
Hi guys...about Kerr...I've been pretty mum on Kerr because I feel that's the best way for me to handle it. If you've noticed or not...I've never had much publicly to say about Reecie, Louis or Kerr now. One I personally like all three of these guys and two...sometimes I've been privy to some confidence that has given me a certain perspective. I don't know Kerr's current situation but I was under the impression that he would be back with the team the day after Labor Day and I expect him at some point to be back to his full capacity at some point down the line. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Seabus (Sep 17, 2004 1:56:13 PM)
Gary, where does Ringer stand in your Mr Ohio rankings after the gaudy numbers he has put up over the first three games? Did you get a chance to see the Trinity game? Could you summarize it quickly if you did?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 1:59:24 PM)
No I didn't see Ringer against Trinity but I am and have always been real high on Javon Ringer since I saw him in the state final game in his sophomore year. As far as Mr. Football goes...Tyrell Sutton is still my number one man, Ringer is second and Manningham has risen to third because of his Glenville performance. He did it on offense and defense in that game. Unless Sutton falters in any way, Mr. Football is his to lose. I will see him again Saturday night against St. Vincent-St. Mary-St. James in the Rubber Bowl.

buckman (Sep 17, 2004 1:59:42 PM)
Gary- I was just needling you a little, nothing personal. I would like to know if you honestly believe with academics in order that Javon Ringer will get an offer

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 2:02:41 PM)
No offense taken buckman...I am under the impression that is pretty close to being an accurate assessment of the situation. I think their days of pulling scholarships under any circumstances are over so they want to be safe first with guys like Ringer and maybe even Freddie Lenix and Curtis Smith of Glenville.

Rick (Sep 17, 2004 2:03:17 PM)
I find it interesting that Amato is so open about this being a HUGE game for them. Usually coaches downplay the importance. I'd like to see it backfire on him!

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 2:06:36 PM)
If you're hoping to upgrade your need to beat the Ohio State's of the world when you get that rare chance to play them. It would huge for their program to beat the Buckeyes who just won a national title two seasons ago. And face it, they believe they should have beaten us in Ohio Stadium last year. But guys they don't have Rivers this year...big difference...huge matter who else they have back.

canal fulton buckeye (Sep 17, 2004 2:06:39 PM)
gary do you believe the weather concerns help us or them, personally i think it helps them, i'm not confident depending on ross, and pittman (freshman)

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 2:09:18 PM)
hi canal fulton...I'm just excited about our chances in every game this season because I like the talent we do have and I know it's only going to improve individually and as a team we will improve every week as well. And I'll take my chances with my guys every week, home or away, rain or snow. Our defense gives us an edge in every game and more so in adverse weather conditions.

buckeyenole (Sep 17, 2004 2:02:56 PM)
Hi Gary!! Thanks for doing this every week. It sure is fun. I have two recruiting questions: 1. With all the talent that we are in on at LB (Alex Daniels, Rico McCoy, Travis Beckum, and Andre Mathis) does Freddie Lenix get left out possibly. With only 9-10 schollies left we're in a pinch being still involved with about 16-17 highly rated and talented kids. 2. Why haven't we offered Jonathan Stewart from WA yet? Are certain that we're gonna get Riner and Wells? Have you seen Stewart's video? He runs with the power and balance Reecie ran with. He's on track to break the WA state career rushing record THIS WEEKEND and lists us but no love.

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 2:14:26 PM)
Lets see...First I've seen Freddie Lenix make football plays and that excites me no matter who else we get or don't get. I'll take Daniels, McCoy and Lennix before Mathis and I don't Beckum is our zip code. Runningback-wise, I think we get Ringer for sure and I believe our staff is pretty comfortable about getting Wells in the end. I'm pretty excited about Ed Collington from Penn Hills in Pa. now, he reminded me of Reecie. I don't think we have a shot at Stewart in the end. I think I answered everything.

calibuck (Sep 17, 2004 2:14:38 PM)
Gary, I sure miss Coach Dantonio's ability to make adjustments in the defense on the fly especially at half. Are you concerned about Snyder's and Tucker's ability to make adjustments after two games?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 2:18:18 PM)
Hi Calibuck...I think the jury is still out on this matter because we've faced two pretty darn good quarterbacks in the first two weeks and have contained them both for the most part. We've only given up two offensive touchdowns after two games and that's pretty good no matter who you're playing. Sure Snyder is no Dantonio at this stage in his career yet...but I'm confident in his and Tucker's leadership. Don't know what else to say about that.

edbuck51 (Sep 17, 2004 2:18:49 PM)
Schnittker seems to be playing at the same level he did when he arrived on campus. Do you see D.Johnson making any waves this year?

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 2:23:23 PM)
It would be nice to know that Schnittker would be able to handle whatever he's asked to do from this offense at this stage in his career but if he isn't I would have no problem seeing Johnson in there. He's definitely the future at the fullback position.

mohawkbuck (Sep 17, 2004 2:23:36 PM)
Gary,if disaster should happen and Zwick goes down Sat.,Troy would take over but, who is next if he needed backup? Stranger things have happened.

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 2:26:41 PM)
Hi mohawkbuck...I'm guessing that the staff would love to see Boeckman redshirt this year but he would be the next in line after Smith. However I don't think a redshirt would actually keep him from getting on the field he was needed. I don't see it happening that way. I think we can all be happy with having Zwick as the starter and a capable backup in Smith. We're in good hands at the quarterback position.

GaryHousteau (Sep 17, 2004 2:28:59 PM)
Tentatively...I'm heading to Canton soon in the pouring rain to watch McKinley be the visiting team tonight against GlenOak in Fawcett Stadium. Tomorrow I'll be at Buchtel to watch them host Glenville at 1 p.m. and then to the Rubber Bowl to watch Sutton versus Wilson. I'm picking McKinley, Glenville and Hoban as winners. Smile. Thanks for your questions today. Go Bucks!
