We have a transcript of today's chat with Gary Housteau now posted.

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:05:34 PM)
I'm here guys...let's rock!

Getaback (Sep 24, 2004 1:06:10 PM)
While watching the Houston-Miami game last night I couldn't help but notice but notice Houston backs cutting back and hitting holes with authority, often getting significant yardage after the first hit. Some of these backs(#27) were of considerable size. At one of the greatest universities in the country why do we not get the best big back instead of our stable of slashers with no vision?

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:09:16 PM)
Hi getaback...I think having Reecie around for his third year would prevent that question from even being asked. He rocked the whole applecart obviously but I agree that should still have a few more candidates to turn to then what we have. Let's hope that Pittman and Haw will help correct that problem going forward.

BuckeyeDave (Sep 24, 2004 1:09:20 PM)
Hi Gary. Give us your prescription for Ohio State anemic offense.

BuckeyeDave (Sep 24, 2004 1:09:22 PM)
What do the coaches at NC State and Houston know that the Ohio State coaches don't know?

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:14:13 PM)
It's the tale of two Tressels and you can see why JT believes in what he believes in. The first two games of Air Tressel were rip it and zip it on offense and we had a minus 7 turnover ratio. With Tressel ball implemented in week three, we were better off safe than sorry. Tressel has more control over the outcome of a game in the second scenario and that's why we're 31-2 or whatever the record is over that time and that's why he wins championships. So the bigger the game...the more conservative we become. Tressel obviously trusts his system more than the talent he has at his disposal on offense. I don't see the recipe ever changing much.

APittmanShouldStart (Sep 24, 2004 1:14:31 PM)
Pittman's da man!!!

APittmanShouldStart (Sep 24, 2004 1:14:32 PM)
Hey Gary, Selwyn Lymon, whats the latest?

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:17:11 PM)
With Pittman I have alluded to that as much for quite some time now and I hope that we will see more and more of him in the future. I would also like to see more of Haw. Rip the red shirt off of his back and let's one-two it with Pittman and Haw! I have nothing to offer on Lymon sorry. Post that for Duane on the message board and I'm sure he'll get around to answering it.

Kirk (Sep 24, 2004 1:18:03 PM)
Gary, outside of Tyrell Sutton what are some players that have impressed you this year? Any names we're not hearing much of? I know Alex Allen is one that has put up big numbers

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:23:58 PM)
The chat is really going slow when Kirk starts handing out the questions but Alex Allen has been a terror for the Ursuline and he's been a vital part of their 3-1 start. The Irish play St. Thomas Aquinas minus Dennis Underwood this week and should advance to 4-1. St. Vincent-St. Mary-St. James has a couple of nice and speedy running backs that were impressive against Hoban but neither is a D-I player. Buchtel has a couple of nice looking players on their squad with Cyrus Kersey, an offensive tackle likely to attract some attention. McKinley has a couple of nice junior athletes on their team and they have a fullback/linebacker by the name of Goodrich I believe that is a nice player but he's too small for D-I. Steven Hight will be a nice player in two years at tight end.

APittmanShouldStart (Sep 24, 2004 1:24:08 PM)
Gary, Lawrence Wilson. Where do you think he plays in college, DE or TE?

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:26:25 PM)
I want to say on defense because he has great size and speed and he would like to play on defense, but I could also see him being coached up enough to be able to play tight end at the next level. I really like our chances of landing Wilson, BTW. But I'll go with defense for Wilson at the next level. He couldn't stop Tyrell Sutton last week. I don't think anybody could have. He was awesome.

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:28:23 PM)
I'm hoping to see the sophomore running back from Nordonia play this year. I think he's going to be special.

rdshep07 (Sep 24, 2004 1:32:32 PM)
Hi Gary. Why do you think there is less high school talent in northwest ohio. Is it the coaching, lack of contacts, or the players just dont have the ability?

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:35:56 PM)
Hi rdshep07...It's amazing I have to admit. I don't even find myself wanting to go in that part of the state to look at talent. Other than maybe Greg Keys, Matt Shumaker, Blaine Maag and the linebacker from Coldwater...there isn't much else. No offense please if I missed an obvious player there but I can't figure out why Toledo for instance can't produce any more players. I just don't know the reasons.

Mike68 (Sep 24, 2004 1:35:59 PM)
Gary- I was speaking w/ Whitner's dad down in Raleigh and he told me that Donte's younger brother is a freshman phenom at Glenville- 6'2" 245# 4.5 DE- Have you heard anything about him being one of the next premier Tarblooders

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:38:59 PM)
Hi Mike68... no I haven't heard of him yet but I will look into him now. Last week someone told me that Drew Carter's brother was on the Glenville staff and I didn't know that so I introduced myself to him last week. Grant Carter is his name and I'm told he's a pretty good assistant coach. So I'll look into what Donte's younger brother is all about. Thanks!

BuckeyeJoe (Sep 24, 2004 1:39:11 PM)
What kind of defense will NW try to stop us with? Do you think we will be back to throwing downfield?

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:41:06 PM)
I think we will mix it up some more offense because we're clearly the better team and JT might allow himself to loosen up the reins some. I think it has a lot to do with the mindset he sets early in the week with his quarterbacks so that they clearly know the way he's thinking come game time. I think we'll see more of the big plays that we saw in weeks one and two.

scribeohio (Sep 24, 2004 1:41:10 PM)
Gary, what remaining Ohio kids do you see getting an OSU offer?

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:45:04 PM)
Hi have to start with Ringer... I think that's all but a formality. I personally would love to see Lenix get an offer. I'd like to see Robiskie get an offer. Bryan Williams of Buchtel and Marcus Council of Garfield are really good players but I don't think we'd go after either of them. Williams has already committed to Pittsburgh. Maybe one more lineman in Ohio from among three or four guys still out there. I almost would like to see Brad Jones get an offer but I don't see that happening. Maybe Curtis Smith but I doubt that as well.

buckeyenole (Sep 24, 2004 1:45:17 PM)
Any news on any of the instate kids (Ringer, Wilson, Robiskie, Long, Lenix)?

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:47:50 PM)
Hi buckeyenole...nothing new on any of those guys that I know and I've seen them all play this year except Ringer who I hope to see for sure. Sorry. I would think we have a good shot at all of them if all of them get an offer. A great shot actually. Lenix might be the only one to stray.

Getaback (Sep 24, 2004 1:47:56 PM)
with the number of hurricanes hitting florida this year why can't we use this to our advantage and get a few good hurricanes up north

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:49:41 PM)
Maybe that will indeed sway one or two kids to head north for a safer football season. It seems to get worse every year. That's a natural way to neutralize the weather advantage that the Florida schools have.

BuckeyeDave (Sep 24, 2004 1:49:49 PM)
Any news on Branden Joe? Will he be ready for N'western? We could sure use him!

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:51:23 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...I have no new news on Branden Joe other than we'll know when he's healthy when he's on the field and no time sooner. I agree we can sure use him but let's face it... he's not one player that we're able to count on much.

scribeohio (Sep 24, 2004 1:53:27 PM)
Gary, do you think that word is out and clear enough to HS kids that OSU (and many other colleges) expect gpa/ACT/SAT before an offer is made? What reactions have you seen to the OSU academic mandates?

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 1:57:34 PM)
The word should have been out by now and with the amount of money this country spends on education there is no reason why not one student or student/athlete isn't prepared to enter the college level. It's an excuse. Nothing more. Why people wait until it's too late is way beyond me. I don't understand it.

daytonbuckeye (Sep 24, 2004 1:57:43 PM)
Javon Ringer is has over 1000 yards in 4 games. They are playing Roger Bacon tonight in Cincinnati, which I may go to. I know one of his goals is to break over 3000 yds rushing. Do you believe he will have a chance to accomplish his goal? Though I hear through a couple of CJ grades that the coach usually takes him out during the 3rd quarter. Also, any words on his grades?

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 2:02:25 PM)
Sure I think both of Ohio's great backs this year have a chance at 3,000 yards but they'll have to go deep into the playoffs and I think Sutton has a better chance than Ringer because of that. I'm just worried that Ringer might not make it to the playoffs because of their difficult schedule not because they're not good enough. I take my hat off to both these two guys. I get to enjoy Sutton because I live in the north so I hope you people in the south are enjoying Ringer. I hope to enjoy watching him at OSU some day. No new words on Ringer and his grades...let's wait for the first grading period to end before we look into that.

buckeyenole (Sep 24, 2004 2:02:32 PM)
Have you heard anything about Keys? Is he probably more of a MAC back as opposed to a B10 back?

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 2:05:40 PM)
Greg Keys is a really decent prospect that may get noticed by a BCS type of school before it's all said and done. He's got good size and speed and he can play so I would think that he could be a steal to land out of Ohio for some program. I would guess that will end up in the MAC at least but I'm hoping for something bigger for him.

daytonbuckeye (Sep 24, 2004 2:05:53 PM)
With Ross fumbling in the 4th quarter, will this open the door for Pittman to see more playing time during N'Western? This will allow him two weeks to recover from his injury as well. I do like Pittmans vision for the field and his burst of speed hitting the line. It seems like Ross shuffles too much. Why does it appear Ross isn't hitting the holes with authority. I get frustrated watching him then turning it over and watching D. Walker for ND run.

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 2:09:35 PM)
Hi daytonbuckeye...I'm ready for the change...I'm ready for Pittman to start. It's Northwestern for crying out loud and why not name him the starter...just as a change of pace for the offense...early in the week. Every carry by Ross seems like a missed opportunity or one less opportunity that Pittman could have had. Pittman could easily be our Darius Walker and if he can't handle it then go back to Ross because we know what we're getting with Ross. If there is open daylight he will get some yards but if a truck can't drive through it to get started then neither can Ross.

daytonbuckeye (Sep 24, 2004 2:09:45 PM)
Gary, how pleased are you with Snyder? It appears to me, through the first 2 games we didn't blitz and run as many stunts as last year. It appeared we blitzed much more during the NC STATE game. Also, sorry for saying this, but Amato needs to learn how to dress. Those sunglasses have got to go! What a great feeling it was to see us with the W. NC STATE was just two hyped up for this game. Hats off to a well coached and disciplined buckeye team. My Purdue buddy was just as impressed.

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 2:13:13 PM)
I said last week that not having Rivers was a huge difference for a program still learning or trying to learn how to be a winner and win with class which they've got a ways to go on both of those fronts. I think Snyder will be okay and he too will improve as the season goes on. With Amato...NC State is what it is. They're a reflection of their coach as are we.

buckeyenole (Sep 24, 2004 2:13:23 PM)
Gary, using your experience watching JT coached teams over the many years, do you think he will go to Pittman or is it Lydell or bust b/c he's a senior? I think many are clamoring for Pittman or Haw or both and I wonder whether either will get a true shot this year. What do you think?

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 2:16:56 PM)
If the talent is clearly there, JT will go with the younger player a la Clarett but all things being equal...he'll stick with his seniors. But senior leadership is so vitally important, as is the punt for instance, with Tressel, so he will not compromise it unless he can justify it overwhelmingly in his own mind. That's the impression that I've gotten over the years.

Kirk (Sep 24, 2004 2:16:59 PM)
It looks like that is all we have today as far as questions so we'll let Gary go. Thanks everyone for stopping by today!

GaryHousteau (Sep 24, 2004 2:19:18 PM)
Thanks for all the questions we did have and thanks to all of you who took the time to be a part of the chat today. Again I'm going with Fitch over McKinley and Ignatius over Worthington's team from NY. Have a great weekend and go enjoy a high school football game tonight if you can. Smile!
