What will be the biggest factor in Cook's decision?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:13:17 PM)
I would say the biggest factor is goign to be a tri-state decision. It's not a requirement, but staying close to home is a strong desire so his parents can have the opportunity to comes to game and watch him play
EvanDaniels (Oct 12, 2004 9:13:23 PM)
What are the chances Cook, Conley, and Oden go to school together
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:14:17 PM)
I would say two out of the three are very possible, but all three are probably not probable right now. Oden is the situation where he's goign to have a hard decision to make the decision between college and the draft. Conley is definitely going to college, and the jury is out on Daequan, but he desires to go to college
Buckman (Oct 12, 2004 9:14:35 PM)
Coach, we all know what a talent Cook is what do you think the chances are that he will play college ball before heading to the NBA?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:15:22 PM)
Right now i'd call it a 75 percent chance he's going to college. We havent heard enough buzz to say it's worth going to the NBA. It comes down to his desire, and thats college. Our smartest move is going to college... unless he's a lottery pick, he's definitely going to college
bucknga (Oct 12, 2004 9:15:44 PM)
What kind of timetable is DC looking at? Who are the major players in his recruitment? (Family, yourself, AAU coach, any others?)
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:16:32 PM)
The timetable is basically 8 to 10 team wish list, and have that down to 5 by march madness and make that decision by july before he starts his seniore year. The people helping is his family first and foremost, his high school coach, coach conley, and myself
UABuck (Oct 12, 2004 9:16:50 PM)
Why is Wake Forest on Cook Conley, and Oden's lists so high? How influential wiLL Conley Sr. be with these three's decision?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:18:00 PM)
I think Wake got involved right off the bat. The first piece of mail was from wake, and Skip Prosser's ties to the area has helped. Sometimes kids talk and they look at package deals. The opportunity to play together as a freshman is tempting to them. Its almost the same situation that can be offered at OSU. Those two schools, the three can go to college together and play
bucknga (Oct 12, 2004 9:18:17 PM)
Does Pgue follow right behind Cook, and will Cook consider him at all in his decision?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:19:14 PM)
I think that its a possibility that Aaron can follow where Cook goes, but I dont think thats a strong chance of that happening. He plays a different style. I do know that Pogue is a fan of the UD flyers. I do think that there's a good chance he stays close to home.
OSUhoops1 (Oct 12, 2004 9:19:34 PM)
What is one thing that Cook needs to work on the most?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:20:34 PM)
I'm a defensive coach in football, so as part of my mentality i think that every kid could work on defense. I think he needs to work on footwork and get himself in position to guard the 6-7 and 6-8 kids at the next level. he could also work on his left hand.
OSUhoops1 (Oct 12, 2004 9:20:46 PM)
What is the difference between Coach Matta's style of recruitment compared to O;brien's?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:21:58 PM)
Just being able to have Coach Matta take the front run, where with Coach O'Brien it was Coach Lamonta Stone. Once that happened with OSU, Daequan was very disapointed, and OSU dropped right off the radar. But Coach Matta and Coach Groce really attracted themeselves to Daequan, and i think they are the perfect fit. Withotu them, they wouldnt be in such a good position to recruit him now. Period.
UABuck (Oct 12, 2004 9:22:15 PM)
Tell us about Aaron Pogue. Is he going to be O.K. academically? What does his early list look like? Who would you compare him to, in terms of Big Ten players we might be familiar with?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:24:21 PM)
Again with Aaron, the biggest factor is maturity. He's going to be alright academically. Everyone understands the importance that he has to bare down and get his grades worked on. University of Cincinnati, UD, OSU, Minnesota, Michigan State, and Louisville. We have to reevaluate things, because now there's going to be a lot of interest in football as well. This is more complicated because he's a legit 2-sport athlete. 6-8 280, he's a legit PF and an offensive linemen in football. he will make coaches drool. He's a great run blocker with great reach, and great pass blocker. If you saw film on him right now, you would think he's a veteran, but he's only played four football games
OSUhoops1 (Oct 12, 2004 9:24:38 PM)
How would you assess Coach Matta's ability as a coach and a recruiter? Has he made an impact to Daequan?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:25:45 PM)
His X's and O's speak for themselvs. Everywhere he has been he's won 20 games a year. It wont surprise us at all if they get an NCAA tourney bid or at least an NIT. He's a simple guy, but makes kid believe in his abilities. he gets the most out of his talent. You almost think its a fluke he didnt beat Duke. He's a great coach, and Daequan is very attracted to his style.
UABuck (Oct 12, 2004 9:26:00 PM)
How much do you think OSU's oncourt performance this year will factor into Daequan's decision? What does DC specifically like about Matta and staff?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:26:49 PM)
Its really not the on court decision. We know Coach Matta and what his style is like. Its more likely what happens with the NCAA. Its not likely he will get a 3 or 4 year ban or anything, but as long as its not past Daequan's freshman year that things are straight, OSU is definitely going to be in the picture
bucknga (Oct 12, 2004 9:27:10 PM)
Is it hard to keep a kid with the talent of DC focused, especially witnessing the lebron james model coming straight from the state of ohio. Has DC expressed an interest in a major or program of interest?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:28:19 PM)
Not really. One thing about Daequan is that he's humble. He's a teen, and he likes to play play station and talk on his cell phone, but I dont think he realizes what the next year will bring. He wants to play ball and win a national championship in college. His mother has a strong hand on Daequan, and he comes from a disciplined background. He understands i dont play and he knows how the rules are layed out
EvanDaniels (Oct 12, 2004 9:28:37 PM)
Oden is obviously the best player in his class, what will it take for him to go to college? How can he turn down 15 millions dollars?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:30:13 PM)
It probably wouldnt take much. I do think there's a great desire to do just that, but with financial situations being as they are, he will have to do what's best. I think theres a good chance he goes for a year or two but it's just really tough to tell. It would be hard to pass up the NBA if he knows he will be a lottery pick, as I think anyone in this chat room would understand, but I think it comes down to desire, and he wants to go to college
Buckman (Oct 12, 2004 9:30:24 PM)
Coach, is Daequan an OSU fan? Does he have a desire to be THE guy to return OSU to greatness, much like Jimmy Jackson did?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:31:37 PM)
There's no question he's and OSU fan in both basketball and football. He feels wherever he goes he wont leave footprints in the sand. He is a great team player, he just wants to be part of a team that will win. He doesnt look for a lot of individual stats. He will pass the ball in a crucial moment if he feels someone else should take the shot. He's the one player... every program is one player away, and Daequan is that one player. he's the type that attracts other good players.
OSUhoops1 (Oct 12, 2004 9:31:53 PM)
Do you think Coach Matta can put a fence around Ohio and keep the in state players in Columbus? Can he turn this program into the right direction?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:32:34 PM)
I think Coach Matta has the ability to put a fence around the tri state with his ties to Indiana, as well as Ohio. I think he will be able to draw from the area, and return to greatness at OSU. mark my words, Coach Matta will do great with what he has got
buckmark (Oct 12, 2004 9:32:43 PM)
How often do you talk to the college coaches?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:33:37 PM)
Daily. Through the legal period. Also once a week we make calls to the schools Daequan is interseted in. It's a 24/7 job. Its very entertaining not only for Daequan, but at Dunbar several kids who have this opportunity-- Aaron Pogue and Mark Anderson. It's a daily job, but it's fun
cap10buckeyes (Oct 12, 2004 9:33:57 PM)
What are the biggest obstacles that the buckeyes face in the recruitment of Daequan??
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:35:29 PM)
Probably the fact that Daequan is the type of kid that can go anywhere. Sometimes kids are MAC kids, or national kids, or whatever. The biggest obstacle is that Daequan just has so many options out of high school. He was born a North Carolina fan. To add to that, I dont want to scare anyone, but Michigan has done a great job. Tommy Amaker has done a great job from the beginning. They are very very much in the picture too. He's just keeping his options open
Kyle S Lamb (Oct 12, 2004 9:35:46 PM)
Along those lines, who has recruited Daequan the strongest so far?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:36:48 PM)
No question Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Wake Forest, UConn, and Dayton and the Local teams are doing anything they can. Everyone is your friend right now. We just have to keep a fence up and do what's best for Daequan. I'm glad certain rules are in place, it just gets overwhelming at times
MrLogic (Oct 12, 2004 9:37:16 PM)
Is there a timeframe that OSU must know the details of the possible NCAA sanctions to remain on DC's list
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:38:21 PM)
We dont feel like with the things that happened several years ago... we dont think what the worst case scenario is that they have to pay money back? Maybe a slap on the hand? That might affect the first year or two at the most, but unless they had a really severe penalty we dont feel its a factor
UABuck (Oct 12, 2004 9:38:47 PM)
How much will the depth charts of other schools impact DC's choice? I hope you are making him aware of all the wings Michigan is stocking up on ;-)
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:40:27 PM)
Depth Charts are definitely important, but I believe Daequan can play the 1,2, or 3. He is a baskebtall player, so depth charts dont mean too much. he is goign to play. Worst case scenario is that he will be 6th man off the bench. Starting right away isnt a requirement. He will get his time. Even on the Airmen and Indy Heat he came off the bench sometimes. Thats important but not too important because he's the type of player that will play. Believe that. We try to teach him that he has to earn the PT anyhow. We arent going to run from competition. It brings the best in him
EvanDaniels (Oct 12, 2004 9:40:58 PM)
Has OSU offered all 3 members of the BIG THREE (oden, conley, and cook) When Conley listed his offers he didn't mention OSU?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:41:24 PM)
I'm not aware of that specifically. But I can tell you, if any of the three called OSU today and said they were coming, there's a spot for them
OSUhoops1 (Oct 12, 2004 9:41:43 PM)
I'm sure you have seen some of the recent Ohio State basketball games. As a coach, what are some of the changes you feel need to be made? Whether it is personel, offense, pressure.
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:43:23 PM)
I dont think too many changes need to be made, I do think the style of play will help. The shooters will be turned loose a little more, they will move the ball, they will take smarter shots. he's always done well with undersized centers. I think he will do with Terwilliger and develop him. I'm confident within the next few years they will be a top 25 program. With the kids he has there, once they learn him and learn his style, they will be okay. I've seen him up close and personal at a xavier practice, and it didnt surprise me with their run. We had the pleasure to get to know him close and personal because they used Dunbar high school as a place to practice during the tournament.
cap10buckeyes (Oct 12, 2004 9:43:37 PM)
If you were to honestly rank where Daequan stands in his recruitment with the schools you have mentioned, how would the schools be ranked??
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:45:23 PM)
Pretty well even, but I would say North Carolina, OSU, Michigan, Wake, Oklahoma, UC, Clemson-- remember there's a strong connection with Oliver Purnell. Michigan State, Illinois. He's attracted to the Big 10 because his family can come to see him play. Outside influences are UConn and Texas. Kentucky and Kansas are knocking, but we're at the point that no one else is getting in. We're not entertaining anyone else at this point. In March we will cut things to five
buckmark (Oct 12, 2004 9:45:38 PM)
what is the most difficult part of the recruiting process for you as a coach of a top recruit?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:46:34 PM)
To try and entertain and make time for everyone. You just can't do it. If you could clone this kid, maybe everyone would be happy. But there's just not enough time, and it's distracting at time. I'm glad there are some of the rules in place that there are. Another thing is a lot of people try to get close and influence him. Close friends, family, lost uncles, etc
buckmark (Oct 12, 2004 9:46:56 PM)
Who would you say are some of the best players in Ohio who are "unknown" right now?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:48:06 PM)
I'm prejudiced, but one of the best unknowns is Mark Anderson at Dunbar high school.. Adrian Graves of Cincinnati Hughes. Eddie Gray of Cincinnati Taft ... there's a lot of kids in that league that we see. Another is Chris McKnight of Withrow. He's tough too
MrLogic (Oct 12, 2004 9:48:22 PM)
What college coaches have you dealt with that are as hands-on in recruiting as Thad Matta? Are there college coaches that are more hands-on in recruiting?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:48:47 PM)
Tommy Amaker right away. Coach Sampson at Oklahoma. Those two come to mind right away
Buckman (Oct 12, 2004 9:49:01 PM)
Coach, can you give us some insight as to where his parents want him to go? Obviously they want to see him play but do you think they want him to go to OSU in particular?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:50:33 PM)
I think they particularly are the ones that helped design the gameplan of the tri-state. Its not a requirement. If Daequan wants to go to Wake Forest, they will support that. But they are just being patient and weighing things out. We have ways of talking to ex players rather than current players and give us the low down of what to look for. Again, the tri-state area is what we are looking at the most.
UABuck (Oct 12, 2004 9:50:47 PM)
What would be a good game to come see Dunbar play?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:51:27 PM)
Cincinnati Taft at the Flying to the Hoop Tournament. I think that's the one in early November. Brookhaven will be a good game too.
bucknga (Oct 12, 2004 9:51:42 PM)
Have you talked about any team goals for this year, and what type of things will DC be expected to do for your team? What type of numbers do you expect out of DC? What type of competition are you guys looking at?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:52:58 PM)
I think Daequan has tasted the district championship and was a game or so away from the Regionals. They have set their goals high and want to get to Columbus. He wont accept anything less. We got this far without Aaron last year. We started one freshman and four sophomores, so the experience they have together is invaluable. You can be beaten any night, and there's a big target on Dunbar's back with a Daequan Cook.
cap10buckeyes (Oct 12, 2004 9:53:08 PM)
Coach, what steps remain in Daequan's recruitment with the schools involved and what will compel him to make a decision??
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:53:54 PM)
The decision could come sooner than later, but the steps are official visit/ unofficial visit. Keep gathering info, style of play, and some factors is security of head coach.
OSUhoops1 (Oct 12, 2004 9:54:02 PM)
Can Ohio State win a National Championship with only Ohio players. I ask it only because quality of players in Ohio seems to be a hot topic.
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:55:06 PM)
Anything is possible. If you can go accross the borders to get a 7 footer here and there, maybe. I think it takes national talent, however, to win a national tournament. They can do it dont get me wrong, but right now Ohio is hot. The class of 06 and 07 is stacked
bucknga (Oct 12, 2004 9:55:34 PM)
Have you heard much on the NBA's efforts to pass the minimum age requirment for the draft? Do you have sources lined up to evaluate DC's NBA stock when the time comes? How will you handle that situation, I am assuming you have never had a player in that type of situation before, who will you turn to for guidance in that manner in giving the right advice to DC?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:56:58 PM)
The sources are in place. We have them lined up for us. I think it's going to depend on how many kids leave to go pro. I think there's a possibility of seeing the rule. Sometimes the problem is kids getting bad advice. I think there might be some sort of developmental league put in place. I think these kids dont have the advice, they dont have the grades, and their dream is done. They dont realize that 10 mil may sound like a lot, but by the time uncle sam gets his cut, and you party unwisely, you're broke
Buckman (Oct 12, 2004 9:57:16 PM)
Coach, is Daequan good friends with any of the other top Juniors and Ohio and do you think they would want to go to the same school?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:58:14 PM)
I dont know about top juniors. I know he's friends with Lighty, with Jones (Jujuan) who is now in Georgia. I know he's friends with OJ Mayo, with James Dews. They are friends and talk to each other. But I havent heard any other package deals other than maybe him and Mike Conley
UABuck (Oct 12, 2004 9:58:23 PM)
Have you heard much through the grapevine regarding other Ohio players interest in OSU? Any kids you are hearing that might really like us (e.g. - Dews, Chichester, Morgan, others)?
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 9:59:09 PM)
Just Lighty and that's the only one i've heard. That's the only one that Daequan has mentioned really liking OSU. They both could play at OSU. I think being their versatility and being able to play different positions make it better for both of them
Kyle S Lamb (Oct 12, 2004 10:00:19 PM)
Okay guys, we'll take two more questions then Coach has to run!
UABuck (Oct 12, 2004 10:00:42 PM)
Follow up - does that mean you don't think those other kids aren't that interested in OSu, or that you just don't know? That's interestiung about Lighty - I thought he and Daequan would go separate ways for sure.
Coach Al Powell (Oct 12, 2004 10:01:46 PM)
I'm just not sure, because usually that type of info makes its rounds around the AAU circle. I just havent been in that circle but i'm sure Thad has talked to those guys. No, its not the case about Daequan and Lighty, at least in Daequan's mind. He likes David's style and liked playing with him
riverwatchbucknut (Oct 12, 2004 10:01:54 PM)

Kyle, were U disappointed that OSU told CDR they were going in a different direction with their recruitment? I mean the guy is a top 20 player!!
