Georgia Defensive Back High On The Buckeyes

Could Anderson Russell of Atlanta (Ga.) Marist someday be a Buckeye? We caught up with this DB/RB and learned more about Ohio State's interest in him and where the Buckeyes stand. Here's the report from Duane Long.

A new name on the recruiting scene to Buckeye fans is Anderson Russell out of Marist School in Atlanta, Georgia. We caught up with Russell to find out more, and it turns out he has already been up to OSU for camp and his numbers there definitely support Ohio State's interest.

"Right now, I'm 6-0, 197," Russell said. "At Ohio State camp, I ran a 4.44, 34-inch vertical, 4.34 shuttle, 18 reps of 185."

Russell is listed as a running back, but OSU wants him as a safety.

"I play running back and safety," he said. "I am being recruited by Ohio State as a safety. I've got over 1,300 yards rushing. I only play safety a little right now. I play mostly running back.

"I used to play baseball, but I gave it up. I will run track this spring to work on my speed."

Russell is being recruited by the man who would coach him in the defensive backfield, Mel Tucker.

"I'm being recruited by Coach Tucker," Russell said. "He's a great guy."

How did OSU and Russell come in contact?

"A guy who helps out our team -- Doc Spurgeon -- I think he knows Coach Tressel, and that got them interested," he said. "I went up to camp there. I was really impressed. The coaches are great. Everything's great up there. Ohio State's my clear leader."

Russell said he was offered by OSU about halfway through the season. He does plan on coming up this weekend.

"Yes, I am coming up for the Penn State game," Russell said. "I will be coming up with my mother."

Russell hopes to make it in right before the game because Marist (a 4A school; 5A is the largest Georgia classification) has a huge contest tomorrow night.

"I have a flight out at 8 am Saturday," he said. "We have a real big game Friday against our arch-rival. It's the final game of the year. The winner moves up in the rankings and it will have an impact on the playoffs."

Russell is rated as a three-star prospect by Some have wondered if a commitment could come this weekend, and while that is never out of the question, Russell said he plans on taking more visits.

"I always thought I would take some visits, and I'm sure I will likely take a few more visits," he said. "Unofficially, I've been to Georgia Tech and Duke."

In addition to Ohio State, Russell also lists offers from Duke, Furman and Middle Tennessee State. He will be on Fox Sports Net South's "Countdown To Signing Day" show this evening at 6:30 pm EST.
