Steve, what's the latest on the strip club incident involving Lydell? If he is being allowed to play, is he in the clear with the police?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:11:12 PM)
Yes, it sounds like he is clear to play. The police have not filed criminal charges against Lydell, as far as I know. I wonder if they ever will. A lot has been said publicly and privately. Some think Lydell was set up in some fashion or may have even been the victim of an extortion attempt of some sort (not sure by who). Police probably are just saying this is so minor (at least Ross' involvement) that it does not merit a charge. If he did not knowingly pass fake money, how is he supposed to know. All of this is supposition because we haven't talked to Lydell.
stephens6295 (Nov 4, 2004 3:11:18 PM)
Steve, what is your take on Pittman's roll in the offense? Seems to be in the dog house, but there seems to be more to it.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:13:04 PM)
Tressel made issue of the fact that punctuality is part of every player's responsibility. That tells me he was late for a meeting or function. Not the end of the world ... except then he fumbled. So now that's strike 2. The fumble was kind of BS, too. He was laying on top of the pile and his progress was stopped and they knocked it out. Here a quick whistle denied Hawk a recovery against UW when the runner was still churning and the ball landed right in his lap in a split second and this one on Pittman was ruled a fumble. Go figure.
scribeohio (Nov 4, 2004 3:13:22 PM)
Do you think that the OL is headed towards Rehring, Simms, Nick, Kne, Barton as starters? Also, the OL has been moving defenders (back, left, right) better - can be seen on film. What's the change?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:13:49 PM)
Biggest change was probably who they were playing, first off ...
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:14:51 PM)
Penn State has a nice defense and a good front, but no Courtney Browns by a wide stretch and Indiana is, well, Indiana. but, yes, Rehring and Barton are applying themselves nicely. They will not be giving up on Datish. I imagine Bollman will continue to rotate with Sims and Mangold the constants.
Buckeyes1979 (Nov 4, 2004 3:14:58 PM)
Steve, I am a little perplxed by OSU offering Anderson Russell RB from the south. With Furman as a primary competitor, I would think there is better out there or save until next year.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:15:24 PM)
We heard the same thing with Malcolm Jenkins, whose other schools were Rutgers and at least Virginia Tech ...
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:17:54 PM)
But they had Russell in camp (even though I never saw him and his name wasn't on the list I read). So they must like something about him. If his academics are in order and the staff likes him, who cares what other schools think (I guess).
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:18:24 PM)
Just came from a preseason basketball function and just posted a report on the front page ...
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:18:59 PM)
Obviously rough day with Brandon Fuss-Cheatham's mom dying after being in a car accident. Our prayers go out to him, his family and his teammates.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:20:05 PM)
Coach Matta fought back tears talking about it. The exhibition on Tuesday could be postponed if it conflicts with any funeral plans.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:20:37 PM)
And in another note, we learned that the exhibition and perhaps 4 of the first 5 regular season games will not be televised over the air in Cols. Pretty stunning.
Buckeyes1979 (Nov 4, 2004 3:21:14 PM)
I am very concerned on our future RB situation. With Ross and Hall gone, that leaves Pittman (I like him!) and Haw. I feel our chance are OK at best on some of the current prospects (Wells-50% Stewart 10% Gwaltney 20%). Anybody else in the mix? Why can't OSU get a couple big name backs every year?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:23:33 PM)
Gary has a story coming on Gwaltney, I believe, at some point. Maybe he'll shed some light on that. I think that may be 50-50 for OSU and WVU. Their recruiting at RB, obviously, was hurt by having Clarett. Guys didn't think they'd have a chance. They missed out on Darius Walker last year and that hurt. If this is how they plan to play, they need stud RBs. I think Pittman and Haw, honestly, have the potential to be those kind of guys. They need strong FB play too and haven't had it due to injuries. Can't expect to run inside out of a single back set.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:23:39 PM)
Not in the Big Ten, at least.
MinnesotaBuckeye (Nov 4, 2004 3:24:56 PM)
Steve, any thoughts on this Saturday's game with regards to Stanton being out and Dowdell in? Not underestimating Dowdell but he has a lousy record as a starter and didn't do that much against the team up north...
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:27:38 PM)
Dowdell played the second half and the OT. He was 8 of 13 passing for 72 yards and also had 6 carries for 32 yards. With a week to prepare, Dowdell will be somewhat formidable. He isn't a great QB by any means, but serviceable. OSU needs to get after him like they did Robinson last week and make him try and beat them. He has some good receivers with Shabaj, Knott and Trannon. This game comes down to how OSU does stopping the run. Cobb and Teague are tough if they can get running downhill. OSU has been shaky at times against the run.
MinnesotaBuckeye (Nov 4, 2004 3:27:45 PM)
What's the latest on the Basketball investigation from this summer? Are we still expecting to get hit with anything? It seems the lawsuit/litagation from the woman who started this has quieted down...was that settled?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:29:00 PM)
Lawsuit was definitely not settled. My feeling is the NCAA is taking a wait-and-see approach to see what is uncovered in the course of that civil suit. Have to think OSU will get hit with something for O'Brien's loan to Radojevic, at the least. But firing him sometimes mitigates those damages down to a slap on the wrist and time served.
skeelo (Nov 4, 2004 3:29:03 PM)
it seems to me that tressel is really trying to pull the reins back on these young talented speed athletes on the offensive side on the ball. i know pittman was late for a meeting last week but why must he continue to be punished this week? this kid should have been the starter from day one!!!!!! in your opinion is tressel to loyal to his veterans almost to a fault?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:29:19 PM)
Who cares who starts? ...
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:29:35 PM)
It's who's in the game and who helps win the game that counts ...
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:31:19 PM)
Hall had a good game against PSU last week. Pittman did not. I agree that Pittman is the future at the position, but he needs to get from point A to point B the right way and not just have it handed to him. Obviously there are issues Tressel does not want to make public. You will never win anything important with guys who aren't team-first guys (and I'm not sure AP has done anything that heinous to brand him as such), so send the message ... and still win the game. That's Tressel's job.
Buckeyes1979 (Nov 4, 2004 3:35:10 PM)
I am with you skeelo. Punishment seems to be harsh.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:35:34 PM)
We don't know what's really happened, though, so how can we speculate whether it is or isn't?
Buckeyes1979 (Nov 4, 2004 3:31:25 PM)
Thoughts on who will fill out this years recruiting class? I like our chances on Wilson (OH) and Wilson (FL). I saw film on Lenix. He is a player! Another Cie Grant type player. I also saw Daniels. He is an impact player without question. Hope he stays home.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:34:13 PM)
Those 4 would be a great start. When they bagged on Myers-White, I figured it was because Oatis was in the bag. Not so, I guess. I also like Walker Ashley, big DL from Minnesota that can play. Gwaltney or Mo Wells or Stewart are desperately needed at RB from a depth standpoint. probably need a TE of some sort here as well (maybe the Gowland kid from Ga.). Those are some of the key guys. Maybe Mathis or McCoy or somebody else at LB, too. If you can get DB Sean Smalls or a WR like Selwyn Lymon (away from Purdue, good luck with all of that) then you'd take them too. I still have them with 9 open spots.
spuds51 (Nov 4, 2004 3:34:17 PM)
Steve, do you know anything about Anderson Russell and why more big schools were not in on him ?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:35:06 PM)
No clue. All I know is what I read. Maybe he plays at a secluded school where few prospects come from. Sometimes you find a diamond in the rough. Tressel's guy at Ga. swears by him (as Gary outlined) and JT seems to take his word as the gospel.
osu25 (Nov 4, 2004 3:35:37 PM)
Hey Steve! Sorry I'm late but what is the latest with Javon Ringer?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:36:38 PM)
I was told he had surgery yesterday and word also came in from USC he has a scholarship there. OSU still sitting tight. My feeling is if they can get 1-2 good, healthy backs he won't be here. They're holding the cards now after the injury. This will be their call. May not make it until January now.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:38:32 PM)
Just got a box of the Nov. edition of Ohio High. Very happy with how it turned out with football playoff and basketball and wrestling previews. Has Mister Simpson on the cover from No. 1 Colerain. Check it out at most major bookstores and a lot of newsstands around the state. Also have features on Robiskie, Lawrence Wilson and Rudy Kirbus in there. Our team does a nice job with it.
osu25 (Nov 4, 2004 3:38:45 PM)
Is john stewart going to make it in for a visit?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:41:01 PM)
Latest I heard was he's been to Wazzu State and has dates set with USC. He is deciding between OSU, Nebraska, Cal and Oregon for his last few stops.
Toledo Bucknutty (Nov 4, 2004 3:41:07 PM)
Good Buckeye afternoon!! In your opinion, do we need to hope for a very deflated performance from those ugly green guys in order to beat them?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:42:47 PM)
No, these teams match up fairly evenly. MSU has a great offense, but is missing the QB who really makes it go. That plays into the hands of the defense. OSU's offense has sputtered, but has shown a sign or 2 that some pieces are coming together, big key will be how well Smith fares in first true road setting (Iowa doesn't count because that game was long since over). MSU is 9th in rush defense and that works well for OSU. I think MSU, as a young team, will be down. OSU will take advantage.
skeelo (Nov 4, 2004 3:42:52 PM)
steve in your opinion why is it that we rarely use the middle of the field on crossing routes and with so many corners eager to jump our out routes i have yet to see any of our recievers make a double move. one would have to think that ginn and holmes would have a field day with this simple adjustment to cheating corners.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:44:30 PM)
Great points. No crossing routes with guys running in space in what, 4 years now? No balls to the tight end since the opener? Double move like Lee Evans did to Gamble would be great, but you also have to pass protect to make that happen. Great points all. Just seems like the offense is confined to a limited number of plays. Maybe they need to broaden their scope a bit. Do some self scouting (and listen to the results and apply them).
skeelo (Nov 4, 2004 3:44:38 PM)
after watching rehring i am very surprised how well he played he completely caved in the the right side on at least three seal blocks. what has been your observation of him?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:45:20 PM)
I did not go back and watch PSU tape yet, so I will reserve judgment. Your stance is similar to many, though. He seems like he belongs. Big kid with better than average footwork. He may have a future.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:45:41 PM)
Obviously coming in early helped him, no question. Rare for a freshman OL to play.
spuds51 (Nov 4, 2004 3:45:46 PM)
Steve, is Gwaltney still going o visit USC ? I 've read that he was and he wasn't.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:46:57 PM)
I heard USC was off. I have not seen Gary's article. He said he did an interview with him and would send in a story sometime soon. Maybe that has the answer. I think it's down to OSU and WVU. He may make some other trips, but I think it's one of those 2. One source told me he (the source) did not see Gwaltney signing with WVU. Hmmm.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:47:11 PM)

MinnesotaBuckeye (Nov 4, 2004 3:48:00 PM)
Steve...looking ahead to Michigan...who covers Braylon Edwards for us in one on one coverage, Fox, Ashton, Tyler? Also, since ESPN is doing the game this week and next...who are the announcers?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:50:04 PM)
OSU does not assign specific cover players to specific receivers. They are assigned by field (wide side) and boundary (short side). If the ball is on the offense's right hash, then the offense will look up and 9 times out of 10, Fox will be lined up on the primary receiver stationed to its right. Youboty would take the primary receiver stationed to the wide side to the left. I have confidence in both. Fox has the experience and Youboty has the ability. He made 3-4 great plays last week against PSU. Duane and I were pretty much in agreement that he was at least the defensive POG if not the overall POG. ...
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:50:47 PM)
Edwards is great, don't get me wrong. Some of the beat reporters are mentioning him as a Heisman candidate for the way he took over games. But have some faith in OSU's guys, Maybe a safety will help on him from time to time. ...
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:51:33 PM)
Regarding ESPN, this week's announcers are Mark Jones, Bob Davie and Holly Rowe. Game starts at noon. No idea yet about the Purdue (ESPN, rare 3:30 game) or Michigan (ABC, 1 p.m.) crews.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:51:47 PM)
I like Davie by the way. I think he's found his calling.
fultonbuckeye (Nov 4, 2004 3:51:56 PM)
Hello, Steve two questions 1. Does OSU get it done on Sat vs. MSU and go to a bowl and 2. When and if does Ringer get an offer, USC must feel comfortable with the surgery
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:52:57 PM)
Yes, I have OSU winning. I think Smith makes the most of this opportunity, OSU runs the ball adequately enough and the defense reins in backup QB Dowdell. So put OSU in a bowl game. (I'll have some thoughts on that in my Buckeye Grove column). ...
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 3:59:53 PM)
Regarding Ringer ... I have heard nothing on how he was expected to be after the surgery, maybe the Dayton Daily article has that. I assume he'll be close if not 100 percent. Again, not sure why OSU was hesitating before. But so many other schools do not share their misgivings, I guess.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 4:02:52 PM)
Regarding Tresselball, I think most kids are savvy enough to see the results (national championship, 2 straight BCS bids, 14 in NFL draft last year) and recognize there is more to this program and this school than the football team's style of play. I agree, the close games retarded the growth of so many young guys (Zwick, Smith, Roy Hall, Richardson, Datish, Schafer, Youboty, etc.) who did not get to play last year because games that should have been over after three were still too tight.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 4:03:22 PM)
Regarding Doering, I saw a recent update where OSU was not mentioned. I think that's 75-25 for Iowa over ND, if I had to guess today.
trolly (Nov 4, 2004 4:05:15 PM)
Which RBs do you see us landing this recruting class?
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 4:06:19 PM)
May have the best shot now at Gwaltney and maybe Mo Wells. Gwaltney has visited and Wells will for Michigan weekend.Stewart says OSU is among 4 schools for his last 2 visits. Beyond those 3, not sure who else. Maybe Anderson Russell if they put him at RB.
fultonbuckeye (Nov 4, 2004 4:08:24 PM)
anything new on Chris Wells
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 4:09:25 PM)
No, his team is in the playoffs. I know that. He's had a really good season, well over 1,000 yards at Akron Garfield. We'll probably get back in touch with him after his team's finished. I know OSU loves him and has already offered.
skeelo (Nov 4, 2004 4:11:12 PM)
what is your gut feeling on l. wilson and alex daniels i consider these two athletes as priorities #1and 2 on our list. we are in desperate need for edge rushers!!!!!! daniels could play anywhere on the defensive side of the ball but d-tackle. he is that versatile. they will be better then both crable and burgess. with immediate playing time being a strong possibility they could be ready to start in 06'
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 4:13:12 PM)
I think OSU may be in better shape on Wilson than Daniels. Wilson took an extra visit to Pittsburgh and that shook him up a bit. I think OSU still has a slight edge there. He must be just taking his time to let it all sink in. Daniels will visit Oklahoma next week for the Nebraska game. No word on an OSU visit yet. He's probably been at every home game, though.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 4:13:53 PM)
Better than Crable and Burgess? ...
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 4:14:08 PM)
Let's watch it, those guys are great backup players at Michigan.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 4:15:42 PM)
Burgess had 2 tackles and Crable none in a game where MSU ran 83 plays last Sat.
Buckeyes1979 (Nov 4, 2004 4:16:07 PM)
Daniels appears to be the Fred Davis of this year. He is great but I say, "Goodbye". We want players who want to be Buckeyes. By the way, saw the film on Gwaltney. He rins HARD! I like him. He plays with GREAT effort and emotion.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 4:17:38 PM)
I'm not sure about that with Daniels. It does say something that he keeps coming to the OSU games. I'm sure he'll be back for Michigan. The Haven may be hunkering down for a long playoff run, too, so it could be a while.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 4:18:26 PM)
Yep, Gwaltney had 9 TDs in a game. They must not have liked who they were playing, but it's hard to score 9 TDs in a walkthrough.
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 4:20:00 PM)
If there is nothing else, I'm going to roll. Enjoy the game Sat.!
SteveHelwagen (Nov 4, 2004 4:11:34 PM)
