Good afternoon everyone...It's high school playoff time and the Bucks need to get a win in East Lansing tomorrow. I'll be at Garfield-Copley tonight and tomorrow night after the Buckeye game up at MSU, I'll stop off in Toledo for the GlenOak-St. Francis game. Let's talk football.
Swin (Nov 5, 2004 1:05:54 PM)
Gary, I know it isn't your neck of the woods, but I was wondering if you had heard anything about a kid named Austin Spitler from Bellbrook. The Dayton Daily did an article on him and he has some nice offers, but he is waiting on the Buckeyes to offer.
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 1:08:44 PM)
Hi Swin, I've seen him at Ohio Stadium and he's a nice looking player but I don't anything about his status right now. I'll see if I can find anything new about him this week.
bucksfan47 (Nov 5, 2004 1:08:57 PM)
Hello Gary, Listen my brother, We need Javon and Gwaltney, give me a reason to SMILE about Ringer, and Gwaltney! Go Bucks!
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 1:13:45 PM)
Hi Bucksfan...Someone who knows told me Gwaltney is very high on the priority list and I'm working on a update on him now as a matter of fact. USC has gotten involved now and of course West Virginia was his first love. Ohio State is right there but it's no gimme with Gwaltney. Ringer I don't know what to tell you about him except that after the first term grades come out and he doesn't have an offer by the Bucks then forget about him. And what do you know, USC is now involved with him as well. Mo Wells is another back that I know is high on the priority list but someone I trust outside of OSU told me that Georgia Tech just might be his ultimate destination. My solution...offer Tyrell Sutton. Smile!
BuckeyeDave (Nov 5, 2004 1:13:59 PM)
I read yesterday's chat transcript describing how Ross was not likely to be charged by the Columbus police. In the Clarett case last year, I read that the police do not normally press charges in those kinds of cases. I understand that Ross may not have known the money was fake. But if he did not pay for the club $$ himself, where did he get them? Wouldn't that come under the "Imporper Benefits" heading? Your thoughts?
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 1:17:21 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...it was just a very irresponsible thing for Ross to do or even be involved with that's my only thoughts. I'll take the police reports at their face as it looks as if that is what OSU has done. I still think Pittman needs to get the bulk of the carries on this team right now.
redondobchbuckeye (Nov 5, 2004 1:17:25 PM)
Hi Gary - Is there more to the Pittman story than being late for one meeting? You know Coach Tressel. Is the punctuality story a smoke screen? Thank you.
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 1:21:09 PM)
Hi redondo...I'm not privy to anything else on Pittman at this time but I'll ask a couple of my sources. I do know at YSU, you would miss the team plane or bus if you weren't there on time. JT leaves on the very second he says he will so punctuality is very important.
bucks4fun (Nov 5, 2004 1:21:16 PM)
I was eating breakfast this morning and saw a picture of our offense on the milk carton. Who steps up and makes plays tomorrow for the offense.
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 1:26:38 PM)
Hi bucks4fun...Kyle Turano! I really don't want to be so negative about this offense but do any of you watch any of these other college games on TV and see teams like Memphis having an offense to die for here while we have no real semblance of one. There is not an offensively philosophy here of rhyme or reason other than move the football for field position and play defense. If we score...great! But don't turn the ball over. Sure we might make some plays on offense during the day but there's no real prolific offensive strategy or system involved here.
Swin (Nov 5, 2004 1:26:44 PM)
Gary, has there been any word on how Javon Ringer is doing after surgery. Was it a total restructure of the knee?
ringerforRB (Nov 5, 2004 1:26:46 PM)
Hey Gary! What's the latest with Ringer and the running back situation this recruiting season?
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 1:30:42 PM)
About Ringer...I hope he's doing well and his academics won't suffer in any way because of this situation. I have nothing new to report on Ringer at this time. I'm assuming he's still one of the three running backs that we are still high on. Gwaltney, Mo Wells and Ringer. Ringer is a great athlete and he's into karate so I'm sure he will heal well and be as good as new.
BuckeyeDave (Nov 5, 2004 1:30:46 PM)
Centerville is #1 in Region 4 I think, but isn't it really about Colerain? Can anybody in the state beat them?
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 1:34:15 PM)
I just like the name "Touchdown Tommy" so I'm going with Centerville to pull off the upset if that's what you call it. Whoever gets out of region 4 will be very formidable as will be the case with Region 1. I think the Fitch-Glenville game will be a great ball game for instance and Ed's has a rematch with a much-improved Raider team. Just good solid football all over the state this year.
redondobchbuckeye (Nov 5, 2004 1:34:22 PM)
Hi Gary - Coach Rios appeared on USC's board asserting that Fred Davis may not be all that thrilled that USC moved him to tight end and Coach Rios questioned USC burning a redshirt season for Fred over a scant few number of plays per game, which seem to accrue mainly when the game is no longer in the balance. Are these views consistent with what you've been hearing out of the Toledo area? Thank you.
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 1:37:16 PM)
I saw Coach Rios at the OSU game last week and he was sporting another new wide receiver at this time. I didn't have a chance to talk with him about Davis but I'll make a note of it to contact him about that for next week if you ask again.
Swin (Nov 5, 2004 1:37:23 PM)
Gary, I don't know if you read some of the articles from other sites, but C. Wells absolutely gushed about Michigan in one I read the other day. ASSUMING that this information is accurate it certainly didn't look good for us. Is he seriously going to look at other places than Michigan?
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 1:40:33 PM)
I wouldn't say he absolutely gushed about Michigan but I will say he's been pretty consistent. What he said or implied in that article has really been his position all along. It will be an uphill battle to win his services but it is doable. His mom and his coach are big proponents of OSU and Butch Reynolds hopefully will have some pull. He's a young kid and he's excited about all of the mail he gets from all the schools. In the end though it's a two-horse race between us and the school up north.
dully (Nov 5, 2004 1:40:41 PM)
How many offers do we have out there for kids that are juniors this year? Who will be the next juniors we offer?
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 1:44:28 PM)
Chris Wells is the only one I can think of now...Ross Homan, Jake Ballard, Ray Smalls are three names right off the top of my head. There's Hartline, Schlichter, Nate Davis and Kurbis and Parris from St. Iggy. There may be a few more obvious names but that's all that comes off the top of my head right now.
scribeohio (Nov 5, 2004 1:44:40 PM)
Gary, do you know if any of our commits are working with prospects? Specifically, Dan Doering?
ringerforRB (Nov 5, 2004 1:45:26 PM)
Gary, when will the ohio high magazines be in the mail?
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 1:47:57 PM)
Hi scribe...nothing new that I know of with recruits do any recruiting at this time. I know Jamario O'Neal talks with Manningham on occasion but I don't think there is any recruiting being done. Maybe Boone will make an overture to Manningham this week or vice-versa! Some had said Schoenhoft was making a few calls but I don't have any knowledge of it.
Kirk (Nov 5, 2004 1:45:26 PM)
We just got ours yesterday; a little late arriving. The interim issues are a bit smaller (48 pages) but we really did get a lot of content in this issue. I would look for it to arrive in the next 7-10 days.
mattent2b (Nov 5, 2004 1:48:31 PM)
Who is the best junior QB in the country right now for us? Can you compare the talent of the Ohio QB's with what you've seen in the past?
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 1:53:17 PM)
Hi mattent2b...I speak about the QBs in the country but in the state I think the four I mentioned earlier are all top prospect in Ohio for sure. I've seen Hartline and Kurbis in person and like them both but I think Hartline has more upside where Kurbis is more of a solid Nate Szep type of QB. Hartline is tall, has a quick release, a good arm and is very football smart. I talk with an evaluator of high schools kids for colleges and he tells me that Davis is a terrific prospect. Schlischter is obviously a quality prospect but I haven't seen him play. It will be interesting to see how his team does tomorrow night...are they pretenders or contenders. My front runner right now is Mike Hartline.
ringerforRB (Nov 5, 2004 1:53:26 PM)
Gary, Do we take another WR in this class and what guys do you think we have the best shot at to round out the class?
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 1:56:12 PM)
With the injury to Brian Hartline we almost do need to take another receiver in this class but we really don't need one unless it's a high caliber guy. There are some quality receivers in the state next year like Daven Jones from Glenville and Robbie Parris from Iggy so we don't really need another receiver. I don't think we'll be reeling in any more Florida speedsters for a while and Derrick Williams is certainly out of the question.
mattent2b (Nov 5, 2004 1:56:23 PM)
Gary, Bucknuts in the past year has definitely become a force! Congratulations! How often do you think that recruits visit our discussion groups, and do you think that all of the negativity regarding JT and our offense can have a detrimental effect on recruits?
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 2:04:09 PM)
I don't think recruits see very much of the premium information at all. I hear it from Glenville a lot for instance because they don't have access to the premium information and miss a lot of the stuff because of it. As far as negative information hurting recruiting...that's more of case where fans want to shoot the messenger instead of the message. Any Buckeye game on TV does as much to hurt the image of this offense than anything that a reporter or group of reporters will say. We've been consistently bad on offense for a few years now and the statistic are there to prove it. We need to be more concerned about the product than what others are saying about the product. But yeah it's hard on the eyes to watch this offense week in and week out for recruits or anyone.
ringerforRB (Nov 5, 2004 2:04:26 PM)
Gary, I'm from stark county. I was just wondering if it was just me or is it a fact that most of the talent in the county is now concentrated in the schools other than McKinley and Massillon. I know McKinley has Steven Hight and Morgan Williams coming up but that seems to be about it.
ringerforRB (Nov 5, 2004 2:04:29 PM)
Other than C. Wells, would you consider any other kids in Ohio as national five star or high four star recruits?
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 2:11:17 PM)
It seems GlenOak is the place where the D-I recruits are consistently coming from now and I think Hartline will be an Elite 11 QB and high star recruit next year. Being from Youngstown, I'm newly exposed now to the Federal League which I know is having a down year in my opinion. Good teams with Fitch and GlenOak and even McKinley and Lake but not any great teams. McKinley has some good young talent as you know and so does Massillon. It's solid football country. Even St. Thomas Acquinas and Louisville have good talent but the big dogs like McKinley and Massillon will always have formidable talent.
GaryHousteau (Nov 5, 2004 2:13:54 PM)
Thanks everyone for chatting today...I have to cut it off early because of time constraints for th game tonight and this weekend making plans and such. Have a great football weekend. I look for Copley to beat Garfield tonight in my game and GlenOak to beat St. Francis tomorrow. Fitch and Glenville is a really tough game for me personally to consider but I'm going to go with Glenville getting past Fitch in that one. Have a great weekend and go Bucks!
