gobucks864 (Nov 24, 2004 1:05:53 PM)
Hi Steve, can you give us some thoughts, feedback, impressions from the recruits at The Game?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:06:58 PM)
Everybody we've talked to was impressed. I think back to 1998, though, and they had 6-7 big timers in, won the game and didn't get a one. Bill Conley made the point the other day. Some kids will decide on one great experience, while most expect the coaches to work them hard to get the verbal. Now is when the assistants will make their money.

fletch33 (Nov 24, 2004 1:07:02 PM)
whats your feel for the recruits that attended the big game last weekend? any verbals soon?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:07:34 PM)
I think they improved their position on Hodge and Wells, the 2 who made officials who were offered. Time will tell. I think Wilson would be here if he had an offer.

swolstein (Nov 24, 2004 1:07:40 PM)
Austin Spitler, a very interesting recruit we're in on....the same type of recruit AJ Hawk was, are we looking at another AJ Hawk?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:08:17 PM)
Yes, Duane has lots of similarities. In fact, Duane just talked to Spitler and he has now been offered. We will be posting a story to that effect when I'm done. No idea on when or if he will verbal.

shakerbuck (Nov 24, 2004 1:08:23 PM)
there are rumors of EJ possibly not returning next year, if this is true would brandon take his game elsewhere as well?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:08:55 PM)
This is all premature. I think E.J. will get his stuff straight and stay put. He probably has a lot of work to do, but he has 9 months to do it.

bradbuckeye2004 (Nov 24, 2004 1:09:04 PM)
are they gonna loose ringer if they keep messing around?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:09:41 PM)
Possibly. He now has a trip set to Michigan State, which has done well with Dayton area kids. OSU is his favorite, but everything is in a holding pattern right now.

eddie (Nov 24, 2004 1:09:45 PM)
Steve, what do you think about Ginns position? should he play some defense next year?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:10:34 PM)
Yes, I understand from a good source that Ginn will see some time on defense next year. Maybe he will play the nickel back and mix in at corner as well depending on down-and-distance and score.

touchdownbuck (Nov 24, 2004 1:10:40 PM)
What is the situation with Javon Ringer?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:11:48 PM)
Javon's side says he has all of his academics in order. OSU's side, there are rumblings they don't want to offer and have to pull it because of admissions (as we've seen all too often of late). They are treading lightly here and hoping to have some definitive answers before offering. Plus, there is the injury, although Ringer should be fine.

gobucks864 (Nov 24, 2004 1:11:52 PM)
Why does Wilson not have an offer? Aren't the recruiting sites saying that he has an offer.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:12:56 PM)
The recruiting sites say he has an offer because he told everybody he was offered. His people even maintain he got one in writing. Problem is, he did not act and verbal immediately and now they may be looking to allocate scholarships elsewhere. Things change over time.

swolstein (Nov 24, 2004 1:13:05 PM)
Does Carlton Jackson have an offer from OSU? If he doesn't, will he? I'ld like to get him and taz together

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:13:20 PM)
Nope, doesn't sound like CJ will even get a visit. He's on the back burner.

bradbuckeye2004 (Nov 24, 2004 1:13:24 PM)
is wells that much better than ringer or am i missing soemthing

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:13:58 PM)
Most view Wells as one of the nation's very best. Coach Conley likes his versatility.

Oubuck (Nov 24, 2004 1:14:11 PM)
Do you think Ginn will play both ways next year?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:14:26 PM)
Yes, somewhat. Probably not every play, but in situations.

swolstein (Nov 24, 2004 1:14:30 PM)
Ted GInn has had a huge impact as a freshmen on OSU, will Jamario O'Neal have the same effect?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:14:56 PM)
Good question, that would be tremendous. But Ginn is one in a thousand, I'm afraid. O

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:15:04 PM)
'Neal should be a good player here, no doubt.

swolstein (Nov 24, 2004 1:15:07 PM)
Whose going to be a better back for us, Haw or Pittman?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:15:44 PM)
Pittman has the edge now because of experience, but I really like Haw. He is a big back. He probably could have helped them this year, but for some reason they were not comfortable using him this year.

bradbuckeye2004 (Nov 24, 2004 1:15:50 PM)
Why is it we are salivating over wells who might wanna be a buckeye and are in a holding pattern over the same talent from ohio who is dying to be a buckeye?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:16:44 PM)
That's the thing. Are Wells and Ringer the same talent? Plus, Ringer is hurt and, at least in somebody's eyes at the university, may not pass academic muster. This is beyond the coaching staff, I understand. Think possible admissions issues.

fletch33 (Nov 24, 2004 1:16:56 PM)
is the the offer of spitler a bad sign on some other recruits would you say?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:18:09 PM)
Could be, I know he is 6-2, 230, which is similar to Hawk's size at the same time. Duane has seen him on tape and really likes him, says there are similarities. Who were/are they really in on at LB nationally anyway? McCoy, Mathis, Daniels? Maybe they take 2 in this class.

gobucks864 (Nov 24, 2004 1:18:16 PM)
I see getting a couple of good running backs in this class as being very important. It would be nice to get Lymon in from Indiana. If not, I think we are ok at WR. We are really loaded at the moment. Defensive end is important as well in this class. Any thoughts?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:19:17 PM)
I agree, they need two talented TBs. A great WR to go with Amos and Hartline would be cool. End is important every year. OSU only had average play at end this year and it showed in games when QBs picked them apart (Tate, Stocco, Basanez, Orton).

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:19:36 PM)
They could use another good end prospect in this class to go with Williams.

shakerbuck (Nov 24, 2004 1:19:45 PM)
sirjo welsh is kicking major *ss on special teams, any word on how is he progressing as a safety?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:20:52 PM)
The special teams are all speed and tackling. Playing defense every down is a different animal, especially at this level. It took Doss a year to learn the nuances of what's happening. Welch moved into the two-deep with Whitner's injury. He'll be in the mix again next year, but he is kind of caught in a numbers game with Salley, Everett, Whitner and Mitchell ahead of him there.

swolstein (Nov 24, 2004 1:20:56 PM)
Do we have a shot at Alaeze

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:21:35 PM)
It was pointed out, I forgot Worthington at defensive end. He could be a difference maker no doubt.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:21:43 PM)
Now about Alaeze ...

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:22:15 PM)
I just read he said an OSU visit is a possibility, but not a certainty.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:22:27 PM)
I think Maryland and VT are the teams to beat there.

hamiltuckbuck (Nov 24, 2004 1:22:34 PM)
Hey Steve. I continue to read the staff is still evaluating Ringer. Is this purely grades or is there a concern about ability. I'm not sure what JR could do at this point to impress.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:23:19 PM)
Yes, this was all asked above. I think they want to make sure he is healthy and also make sure they can get him through admissions. He may be qualified, but as we saw with Morgan and Williams last year they also need to be good enough to get through admissions, too.

bradbuckeye2004 (Nov 24, 2004 1:23:25 PM)
when did ohio states standards become higher than other big ten schools?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:24:21 PM)
I don't know. Nobody knows what the standards are because it seems to be a moving target. They want kids to be within a certain percentile within their graduating class, too.

swolstein (Nov 24, 2004 1:24:35 PM)
Everyone seems so sure that Jonathan Stewart won't come to OSU, I don't see why everyone's so negative, he's not leaning anywhere.....I think we have a shot do you?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:24:50 PM)
I think academics could be an issue there, too.

eddie (Nov 24, 2004 1:24:54 PM)
who is our best wr recruit so far?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:25:38 PM)
Well, they have Amos, but he could also end up as a DB. Hartline is pretty good, but he missed almost the whole year due to a broken leg. Those are their only 2.

touchdownbuck (Nov 24, 2004 1:25:58 PM)
Do not want to beat a dead horse about Ringer, BUT do dicussions ever go on between coaches / recruits that we never hear about?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:26:54 PM)
Certainly. The coaches can't discuss those publicly and it's up to the players to talk about such things. But certainly there are a lot of private discussions on the phone and details we never know about.

osuonu (Nov 24, 2004 1:27:02 PM)
With Spitlers offer, does that mean we are slipping with Mccoy?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:27:25 PM)
No, I can't say that. We'll see if he is still visiting in Dec.

Guest (Nov 24, 2004 1:27:58 PM)
strictly for discussions sake....if JT is found to have violated NCAA rules....does Geiger have any kind of succession plan in place?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:28:26 PM)
NedBeatty asks whether Geiger has a succession plan in place if it's found that Coach Tressel violated NCAA rules.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:28:53 PM)
Well, we saw with O'Brien that he was clearly knocked off guard. My answer would be no, but he'd get one going fast.

swolstein (Nov 24, 2004 1:29:03 PM)
With the emergance of Michael Hart, is there a chance Kevin Grady will decommit and go somewhere else? I think he's the best back in this class and I'd hate to play against him.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:29:09 PM)
No idea on Grady.

Buckeye4u (Nov 24, 2004 1:29:15 PM)
News on so-called "OSU scandals" seem to be dying out or is it in "eye" of the hurricane?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:29:39 PM)
You always hear rumblings that more damning allegations are to come, but what else could they possibly find?

Oubuck (Nov 24, 2004 1:29:47 PM)
Steve what are chances with Gwaltney?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:30:11 PM)
Probably 33 percent. 33 for OSU, 33 for WVU and 33 for USC and 1 percent somewhere else.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:30:19 PM)
He'd be a great get.

bradbuckeye2004 (Nov 24, 2004 1:30:38 PM)
Will Tressel try to use the bowl game in texas to open some recruiting doors in the lone star state? Is that why he is excited to play in the ALAMO BOWL?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:32:16 PM)
Perhaps, I don't know of many studs from the San Antonio area, though. Most of the major talent is concentrated around Dallas and Houston, which are quite a way away. You don't get much of a recruiting rub locally from the bowl game. Maybe a recruit will stop by practice, but you can't bring them to the game.

xmasbuck (Nov 24, 2004 1:32:28 PM)
go back to ginn - similar season to breaston's but breaston got nicked up a little and seemed to be much less of a factor this season - do you think that was all injuries and can it happen to teddy next year?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:33:49 PM)
The more you use Ted, the more you run the risk of injury. That's why they made a conscious decision not to use him on kicks or on defense. Punts and WR were his role this year. As he grows and gets stronger, they'll add more responsibilities. Man can he be something when he learns how to play this game (ha ha). He's better than I ever thought he would be (and that's no joke).

gobucks864 (Nov 24, 2004 1:33:59 PM)
On a different topic...Why does it seem like ESPN is biased against OSU?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:35:27 PM)
Yeah, I get asked this all the time. I'm not sure they are. Obviously, they saw an opportunity to take a shot at Ohio State, one of the sacred cows in all of college sports. In their defense, they gave OSU a chance to refute their allegations (however stilted it may have been) before they made them. They took their shot and exacted their pound of flesh. OSU handled it as best as it could.

trolley (Nov 24, 2004 1:35:34 PM)
Do we have someone on the roster next year that can pound the ball between the tackles like Joe has lately? If not, what recruit out there do we have a shot at for this need?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:36:03 PM)
Gwaltney at 235 would be a good start. Haw has to be around 220. Dionte Johnson is also 220, but primarily a fullback type.

shakerbuck (Nov 24, 2004 1:36:09 PM)
re: Mo Wells it sounded like to me he had a bit of a problem holding on to the ball? is this a concern at all?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:36:36 PM)
Have not heard that knock on him. I know he had 500 yards over his 2 previous games before being knocked out with a 35-yard game last week. Sounds good to me.

swolstein (Nov 24, 2004 1:36:40 PM)
How was Todd Denlinger's season, I completely forgot about him

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:37:17 PM)
OK, he played a lot both ways early in the year. I think when he had a chance to concentrate strictly on defense he was better. Troy made the playoffs, too.

xmasbuck (Nov 24, 2004 1:37:33 PM)
we all seem pretty good about not losing anybody early this season - should we?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:38:02 PM)
All clear right now. Holmes and Hawk say they'll be back. I heard rumors that Schlegel, with his advancing age, was maybe considering it.

bradbuckeye2004 (Nov 24, 2004 1:38:18 PM)
Sorry for all the Ringer ?'s but I'm in dayton and he is a beast down here i guess not as of a beast as cincy colerain is supposed to be, I guess glenville will have 1 hell of a time with them.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:39:11 PM)
Well, the semis are this week. I think most see Kilbourne as a speed bump for Colerain. Glenville should beat McKinley, but Brian Cross is real good. If we get a Colerain-Glenville final, that could be interesting. I'd pay to see that.

gobucks864 (Nov 24, 2004 1:39:22 PM)
Do you think there is much substance to the talk of Justin Zwick transferring?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:40:39 PM)
I think it's premature. My guess is Justin will finish fall quarter and then examine his options. Those would be stay, transfer somewhere I-A for one year of eligibility or go lower level for 2 years of playing time. My guess is he stays and Tressel finds a way to use them both over the next 2 years.

bradbuckeye2004 (Nov 24, 2004 1:40:45 PM)
funny we are loaded at wr now, this time a year ago we were paper thin i guess teddy makes everything great

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:41:42 PM)
Well, Gonzalez came on and got a taste of what it's like and now he is a play maker, too. Everybody loves Lyons and Dukes, too. So they're finding some options. Holmes sticking around would make that unit special. If those other guys emerge, maybe Ginn is needed a little less on offense, too.

swolstein (Nov 24, 2004 1:41:54 PM)
Jason Gwaltney is an absolute beast, do you like our chances with him?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:42:18 PM)
Yes, I do, but Hazell and the coaches will need to work him hard. USC and WVU will pull out all stops for him.

Guest (Nov 24, 2004 1:42:21 PM)
Steve, Do you think there is any chance Tressell will leave for the NFL(BROWNS)

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:42:32 PM)
TBD asks about Tressel to the Browns rumors ...

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:43:46 PM)
I'd say no, not at this time ... unless the heat gets too much from the NCAA. But Tressel has seen how the NFL has chewed up and spit out college guys like Davis and Spurrier. Plus, the Browns aren't any good and have their wagon tied to a 35-year-old QB. They're going nowhere (and it kills me to say that).

leftybuck (Nov 24, 2004 1:43:56 PM)
The lack of offense, and poor offensive line play, was causing a lot of people to think we needed a change. Do you think the way the Bucks came out and played against Michigan will put a lot of that to rest, or do you think they still might look at mixing up the staff for next year?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:44:28 PM)
No, my guess is it will be status quo, unless a Tucker or Hazell or somebody has an opportunity they can't refuse (NFL or true coordinator elsewhere).

xmasbuck (Nov 24, 2004 1:44:41 PM)
anything new from osu on luggage-gate - seems carr pretty much called geiger's first repsonse a lie

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:47:02 PM)
Plain Dealer had a pretty thorough and balanced story, even quoting Geiger joking "I own no dogs." My feeling is this: Security is a necessary evil in today's day and age. ...

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:47:34 PM)
OSU and the Big Ten can NOT come out with a policy saying "Team bags will not be checked." That would be an invitation to terrorists to plant stuff there. ...

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:47:45 PM)
At the same time, OSU's problems here are several ...

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:49:12 PM)
They seemed to make a departure from protocol by subjecting UM players and coaches to checks outside the stadium. Say fans start throwing stuff at them (like the night before at the Pistons game) and you have a riot right there. Nobody wants that. None of the other visiting teams (and there were 5 others) were subjected to this, so it does make you wonder. And, finally, they did not tell Michigan what it was in for when it got to the stadium. ...

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:50:26 PM)
It just doesn't look good guys. Plus, nobody knows if it was homeland security, OSU police or the athletic department who made the call. They're all passing the buck. Take off your OSU glasses and quit laughing for a second (I know, it is funny), but it ain't the least bit right, guys. ...

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:50:52 PM)
Carr made the statement, Geiger would not want his son put through what they were put through and that rings true as well. ...

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:53:03 PM)
And here's the worst of it: What do you think Ohio State will be subjected to next year when it goes there? You have to think when you do stuff like this that they can do 10 times worse to you in 52 weeks. The Big Ten needs to step in here (quietly) and tell everybody to stand down on this stuff.

dingbuck (Nov 24, 2004 1:53:11 PM)
I am new to the chats and late. Who do you think we will play and what will our chances be against an OK. St.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:55:02 PM)
I just haven't spent the time going through the different projections. They have had Colorado, Nebraska, A&M and Tech in the last five years. Oklahoma State hasn't been there since 1997, so they'd probably travel well -- especially for a shot at a name like Ohio State. I think OSU, if it plays like it did last Sat., would beat any of those teams -- OSU, A&M and Tech. That's my initial impression. If they play like they did from weeks 4-6, they'd have a hard time beating any of them.

bradbuckeye2004 (Nov 24, 2004 1:55:15 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:56:25 PM)
My feeling is they will do what they think is best to move the sticks with the personnel they have. I think the OL situation is starting to come around and maybe that would help them do what they "like" to do.

daytonbuckeye (Nov 24, 2004 1:56:34 PM)
Steve, Good Afternoon. I know the bucks could use two backs this year, but with Chris Wells graduating next year, could we feasibly take one back this year with the thought that this might give us the inside edge on Wells. You thoughts please?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 1:57:10 PM)
Good point, Chris Wells is a bright kid and he already thinks OSU is stacked with just Haw and Pittman. We know they're not, if only because of the depth.Situation bears watching.

dingbuck (Nov 24, 2004 1:59:04 PM)
Basketball Bucks. when do you think we will have a good sense of what this team is capable. Do you see an upcoming game on the schedule that will be a barometer for the B10 season.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:00:53 PM)
This game tonight with Creighton is big. Creighton was 20-9 last year and is kind of reloading this year. They blasted Missouri by 24 last night, so it may not be easy. This game is key and next week's game at Clemson. Oliver Purnell is rebuilding at Clemson, but it's a road game. I like it that St. Joe's and Texas Tech, on the schedule later, seem to be struggling a bit. Maybe those will be wins as well. OSU could be 12-2 or something outside the conf.

swolstein (Nov 24, 2004 2:01:01 PM)
I think we could use a solid DT prospect, although we have Denlinger, I haven't heard anything about him, what are our chances with Mckinney, Weston, or Owens?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:02:00 PM)
McKinney told Schoenhoft (who told me and a report is forthcoming) that he's going to Michigan or Louisville. He was at OSU for a free ticket to the game. Coach Conley brought up Weston Monday, but I don't see much interest. Owens told me he likes OSU, but has not heard an abundance from them.

BuckGuin (Nov 24, 2004 2:02:32 PM)
Hello. In college football, when the clock is running prior to a motion penalty by the offense, after the penalty is marked off, the clock is restarted. I've noticed many times that when OSU has the ball with a couple of minutes left and nursing a lead, one of the OSU linemen jump. This happened again vs Michigan with about 2:30 to play. Do you think this is by design? Tressle tells a lineman to jump? And why don't more teams do that?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:03:16 PM)
Good question. When you have a comfortable lead, 5 yards for 25 seconds is a great tradeoff. I'm not sure about the exact rules, but I doubt after the second one that the clock would keep running.

fletch33 (Nov 24, 2004 2:03:25 PM)
who do you see stepping up at linebacker after next year?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:04:03 PM)
Great question. Have to hope Kerr comes through as well as Freeman. Beyond those 2, probably Hoobler and Lukens. I like the 3 (4 with MDA) they have right now (ha ha).

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:04:45 PM)
We have a ton of questions in the queue ... I'll stick around and get to as many as I can.

ToledoBucknutty (Nov 24, 2004 2:04:54 PM)
Good afternoon Steve! I saw coach say again the other day that Mitchum has the best shot at PT next year. In the spring, I thought it was being said that Person was a monster and could probably play right away. Is he having difficulties in some regard?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:05:22 PM)
No, haven't heard of any particular problems with Person. I think he figures in now. OSU is getting the depth back where they want it to be.

bradbuckeye2004 (Nov 24, 2004 2:05:26 PM)
could ringer actually be silent so the other backs don't jump ship

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:05:49 PM)
No, I don't sense that. Why do that and deal with all these incessant questions and also schedule a trip to MSU.

Buckeye 4U asks for who I'd like to see OSU play from the Big 12 South ...

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:07:41 PM)
I think Texas is a pipe dream. I think their BCS chances are nil, but they'll be in the Holiday or Cotton before they fall to the Alamo. Plus they play UT next year, we don't want to take the bloom off that rose. We saw OSU against that Tech root canal in 2002. I don't need to see that again. ...

A&M has the name and has had a nice year for Franchione. That would be cool. OSU is 2-0 against the`Aggies in bowl games, I believe (Cotton in 87 and Sugar in 99). Oklahoma State doesn't have the prestige of A&M, but could have the best record of the group at 8-3 with a win over Tech.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:09:13 PM)
Oklahoma State is pretty good too. That would be a good game.

ToledoBucknutty (Nov 24, 2004 2:09:37 PM)
Does it put as big a smile on your face that we still have at least two more years with Teddy Ballgame?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:10:28 PM)
Yes, it's sad these kids are kind of like indentured servants for 3 years, but what are you going to do. Enjoy the ride for the next 2 years, I guess.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:13:08 PM)
Well, kind of like Ringer, they want to make sure he is qualified and will get through admissions before offering. OSU is vindicated here because of the flameouts by Dareus Hiley and Reggie Smith.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:13:32 PM)
They don't need or want any more one-and-outs, so they're going slow with all at-risk prospects.

daytonbuckeye (Nov 24, 2004 2:13:45 PM)
Steve, other than Chris Wells who are the kids to watch for next year?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:13:54 PM)
Ohio is starting to come in with this junior class ...

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:15:53 PM)
Obviously the QBs are as good a crop as we've seen with Rudy Kirbus at CSI, Mike Hartline at GlenOak and Miles Schlichter at Miami Trace. Bellaire's Nate Davis is a great athlete prospect, though he may favor basketball. CSI WR Rob Parris had a good year, Picktown North OL Justin Boren has been to several OSU games, as has Massillon TE Brett Huffman, Brookhaven DL Jeff Cumberland, Coldwater LB Ross Homan and others are also on the short list.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:16:48 PM)

Steve, everyone says their excited about the Alamo. Thats to be expected. Is there any inside scoop on the disappointment of not playing in a higher level bowl?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:18:06 PM)
tlzimmerman asks about disappointment, possibly, of being in the Alamo ...

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:18:49 PM)
A month ago they weren't in a bowl when they were 3-3 and it seemed bleak. They went 4-1 and beat Michigan. I think they're happy to be alive. They're glad to have the opp to go on a nice bowl trip to a nice town.

SlobberKnocker (Nov 24, 2004 2:19:05 PM)
Steve, do you think any freshman (redshirt or true) will start next year for our offensive line? If so, who?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:21:02 PM)
Well, I assume you're talking about the group that now includes Boone, Bemoll, Cordle, Skinner, Mitchum and Person. Hard to say because Sims, Mangold, Datish, Schafer, Rehring, Barton and Downing all have time played ahead of them. And I haven't mentioned Tyree or Coleman. They have the numbers up. I think we can be assured that the best 7 or 8 will play. And with this kind of embarrassment of riches they better be able to move the ball. There should be no excuses.

OfferTaz (Nov 24, 2004 2:21:18 PM)
Steve, There's got be room in the class for Taz? He's something like the 16th best guard in the nation. Are Cordle and Bemoll both guards or can someone move to Tackle? Also, how about going over the scholarship limit this class? Seems like someone always drops off in the spring anyway. thanks

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:22:10 PM)
I don't think this staff cares about recruiting rankings. Cordle is a guard, not sure exactly how Bemoll will fit in.Doubt Tressel will go over the limit. He's had chances before and didn't.

What does the UM win do for the psyche of a young team like ours into the bowl game, and the entire offseason? I mean, this was the first huge game for many of these guys, and they delivered.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:23:53 PM)
I agree, it means the world. Look what that win in 2001 (even with a bowl loss after it) did for the 2002 team. They believed they were capable and trained like it all off-season.

sdbuckeye (Nov 24, 2004 2:24:03 PM)

Possibly, I ticked off all the receivers earlier and never mentioned Hall.

Does Ginn start at cornerback next year? If so, will he be too worn down --or will it be too risky--to contribute on offense?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:30:05 PM)
Start? yeah, for pub sake he'll probably "start" but whether he plays more than 50 percent of the plays on either side of the ball is the true question. They will figure out which side they need him on the most, he'll probably play 80 percent of the time there and 50 or less on the other side.

I'd say OSU just because the RB situation is so up in the air. Michigan's gotta have Hart.

Guest (Nov 24, 2004 2:31:08 PM)
Sorry, Steve, I disagree with the retaliation angle. Higher-than-thou Carr and the TSUN alum will take the high ground to attempt to make this situation look worse and get play out of it next year. I would be shocked if this was escalated. Now, if it had been Wisconsin, all bets are off.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:31:25 PM)
Indy2buck doubts UM will retaliate next year ...

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:31:55 PM)
I agree, my feeling is they'll want the PR mileage of threatening similar treatment to get in OSU's heads, then not doing it to make themselves look better, which they will.

BuckeyeDave (Nov 24, 2004 2:32:07 PM)
What is your best advice for a HS sophomre thats wants to play D1-A football? How does he go about getting an honest appraisal of his skills? Whats the best way to get in front of coaches/recruiters? How concerned should he be about a subpar sophomore season? Thanks.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:33:00 PM)
The key will be to hit the camp circuit. Pick out 4-5 schools he'd like to play for and try and make a day at each of those schools to show himself. Take his own highlight tape with him and personally hand it to the coach at his position and/or his area coach.

Oklahoma State may be the best of the 3. I'm discounting Texas. They'll go much higher, even at 9-2.

Lot of duplicate questions ... If I did or do not answer your exact question it's because it's the same as many others (like the offense, Ringer, etc.).

sdbuckeye (Nov 24, 2004 2:34:25 PM)
What about the situation at DE next year? For most of the year, our lack of a pass rush really hurt us. Could Worthington get a look?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:34:43 PM)
Definitely. Worthington looks like a monster standing there. I want to see how he plays.

platinum5 (Nov 24, 2004 2:35:01 PM)
Looking at Iowa and Wisconsin (teams that had some much trouble with injuries that they had trouble putting scholarship tailbacks on the field), seeing how OSU has struggled with RBs the last two years, and seeing how Michigan is still recruiting backs like crazy, don't you think the Bucks need at least three RBs.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:35:17 PM)
I would say this: They need 2 and Chris Wells next year. That would be the best case scenario/

buckeye1979 (Nov 24, 2004 2:35:29 PM)
I have two on big recruiting questions? Sorry if they have been brought up. 1. Sounds like Beckum was dropped by OSU for his visit. Thoughts? 2. What is your thoughts on Worthington? What if he waits until Feb and we have a few other DL that want to commit? My take is either you want to be a Buckeye or not (remember Fred Davis?)

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:37:05 PM)
Beckum told me OSU called him to push it back. I just don't think they wanted to do a bunch of visits on this weekend. Of course, he is rated as one of the top DEs in the country, so I'm not sure what the point is in jerking him around like that. I don't blame him for dropping them (although he told me he'd still be here in January). They'll wait until April 5 on Worthington if they have to. He is potentially that good.

Probably not. OSU needs to solve this with 2 good TBs this year.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:41:51 PM)
I like the Buckeyes next year. The schedule is so good if they get by Texas in Week 2. The other nonconfs are Miami (Ohio) and San Diego State. The other 3 road games are winnable: IU, PSU and Minn., as are the 4 Big ten home games: Iowa, NW, Illinois and MSU. That leaves Michigan (uh oh). OSU should have 17-18 starters back, but will need a kicker and a punter (uh oh).

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:43:38 PM)
I think some other schools have taken note of Spitler and they don't want to lose him. That's my guess.

Sounds like we are luke warm on Taz based on his commnets that he is "waiting for a little love from the buckeyes" sounds like they have backed off a little.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:45:03 PM)
He's on the fence for an offer. They're trying to allocate the scholarships properly and already have 3 OL in this class and 15 or so on scholarship total. Do they really need another one (if he's not a top-5 player)? Hmmm.

Stoejoe (Nov 24, 2004 2:45:10 PM)

why would you put ginn on defense he could win the heisman just playing o and specials

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:48:51 PM)
It's simple ...

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:49:12 PM)
If you have people burning your defense and you need a stopper, you play him (just like they had to with Gamble) and besides ...

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:49:26 PM)
It's not about Teddy winning the Heisman. It's about OSU winning ballgames.

fletch33 (Nov 24, 2004 2:49:36 PM)
dont you think ginn is much more valuable on offense since most teams would simply stay away from him on defense just like they did with gamble

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:50:38 PM)
Time will tell. If Hall, Gonzalez, Lyons, Dukes and Jordan have everything under control, maybe Ted only sees spot duty on offense. Going to have to let that one play out and see where they need him the most. After ticking off the other corners, he may be needed more on defense next year.

OfferTaz (Nov 24, 2004 2:50:48 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:55:41 PM)
It's about winning games. Do you think Ted will be happy if he is getting 7-8 catches for 100 yards and 2 TDs and they're losing 35-31 because nobody can check the other teams' receivers? I don't see that.

Stoejoe (Nov 24, 2004 2:55:54 PM)

Yes, you're robbing Peter to pay Paul.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 2:59:52 PM)
The thing is if the young WRs come through there is less urgency for Ginn to play every play on offense.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 3:00:45 PM)
Again, go through spring ball and establish who will help you every play in 2005 and plave Ginn accordingly. I'm confident that is what they will do and I'm confident Ted will rep and play at least part time on defense, particularly if the rumors of E.J.'s demise are true.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 3:00:55 PM)
He's still with the team now, so that's a good sign.

it is like ok well we have this 1 guy who can do it all so we need him to never come off the field beacause if he does we only have a scout team player backing him up

Did Frost get a Red shirt this year?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 3:03:23 PM)
Frost had already redshirted. He'll be a soph next year.

Guys that's 2 hours and I've got to run. Thanks so much for sticking around. Spread the word about Bucknuts.com and check out my buddy Eric Kaelin's book for an Xmas gift for the OSU fan on your list (or for yourself). It's a great product.

I guess my biggest beef with JT this year was his reluctance to change both in scheme and with personnel. I thought that Ross should have been out sooner, Zwick should have been giving ground to Smith sooner, I thought new offensive lineman should have been rotated in sooner and I thought Roy Hall saw way too much action. Your thoughts in general if not specifically.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 3:05:19 PM)
Yes, I'd agree. Hindsight is 20-20, of course. I know after the first or second loss people were clamoring for Smith and it took an injury to get Zwick out. Maybe Smith is a gamer and not as good in practice. I don't know. Ross was all they had for the longest time with Joe, Hall and Pittman in and out of the lineup. Roy Hall was nearly a complete disappointmnet, other than the 1-2 big plays he made. He needs to come on or get passed by.

thanks steve didn't mean to get into it with you i just want the best for the team and i think we need to keep our offensive talent on offense

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 3:06:20 PM)
No, it's cool. I didn't see it that way. A lot of this is based on speculation EJ won't be there. Hopefully, he is around and Ted can concentrate on offense. But I reiterate I have it on very good authority that Ginn will pop up on defense at least from time to time next year.

Any remote chance that OSU gives Irrazary or Guilford another chance?

SteveHelwagen (Nov 24, 2004 3:06:37 PM)
I have heard nothing to support that.
