Mr. Bucknuts' Bucket Of Bullets

Now that the season is over, recruiting will start to heat up. Official visits are about to begin in full force. Mr. Bucknuts checks in with his monthly recruiting review and looks at who's on the list, who's not, and who may or may not be.

And what a long strange trip it's been…

Recruiting trips, that is. With some more officials upcoming (and more on that later…) and just a few more spots to fill. We are but 60 days or so away from finishing the Class of 2005 and we've just had our first new member to the class in the past 2 months!

That new member is Austin Spitler, who went from un-offered to offered to commitment in near-record time. Austin is a big nasty linebacker from the Southwestern Buckeye League, a DIII-DIV that doesn't send many players to Ohio State. We need as many as four linebackers in this class and Austin is a good start. Welcome aboard, Austin Spitler!

Another announcement might be coming momentarily as rumors abound that national recruit Maurice Wells will make his intentions official this week or next. Wells has been rated as high as the No. 1 RB in the nation and is on everyone's Top 50 list. This would be a monumental pick-up for the Bucks and will change some of the strategy at this position for recruiting.

The final introduction is to bring back a recruit we "lost", someone that the Bucks wanted but he chose another school. In this case, that someone is Ohio's Lawrence Wilson, who committed to Notre Dame. Then, earlier this week, the Domers unceremoniously dumped their coach and Wilson dumped his commitment. He says that he wants to re-visit Ohio State, Michigan and Pitt so the Buckeyes have a great shot with a great DE.

Let's take a final gander on where OSU stands, what they need, and whom we are assuming will climb aboard:

Running Backs: The Buckeye perfecta would be to get a great small back and a great big back. That would be Maurice Wells and Jason Gwaltney respectively. The tri-fecta would have OSU getting those two plus gray shirting Javon Ringer, who might be the best of the three. But since Javon has offers from some "also-ran" schools like Florida, Tennessee and USC, I don't think he will fill that bill. I also don't think Gwaltney is coming. So we will have to make do with Wells and Ringer, two of the top ten backs in America.

Quarterbacks: We're done. Rob Schoenhoft is the project this year and he is all upside…

Tight Ends: Not a good year in Ohio here, and OSU is not in on much nationwide. Without a surprise (or settling) I see nothing in the TE category. As mentioned below, we haven't given final rites to our search for Richard Gordon.

Wide Receivers: The Buckeyes are loaded and still looking! Coming back, we have great WR's in Holmes and Ginn, of course. But we also have Gonzales, Roy Hall and Devon Lyons. Wait – don't forget the promising yet unproven Devin Jordan and Albert Dukes. Plus, OSU has 2005's Brian Hartline and Andre Amos already signed up, both of whom could end up as DB's. If they take another pure receiver, OSU would love to land Selwyn Lymon or OJ Murdock. And Brian Robiskie is an exciting – yet un-offered – back-up.

Offensive Line: By my analysis, the Buckeyes are in great shape. As the old line slips into the sunset, the Buckeyes have 15 big bodies to work with and three real good ones that were red-shirted this year: Skinner, Person and Mitchum. Plus, we have the greatest haul OSU has seen in many years in newcomers Alex Boone, Kevin Bemoll and Jim Cordle. If they get three a year of this quality, we will have Michigan-type lines for years to come.

Defensive Ends: The Buckeyes got the dubyas coming: Ryan Williams and Doug Worthington from California and New York respectively. Another great dubya might be the resurgent interest of Lawrence Wilson. The last realistic possibility left comes from the middle of the country in LB/DE Travis Beckum and we will know more in January.

Defensive Tackles: With lots of young DT's getting scant PT (Sian Cotton and Brandon Maupin plus the red-shirted Nader Abdallah), this isn't a position of need. There's an exciting prospect Todd Denlinger coming aboard and he might see time at DT or DE. The final two possibilities seem to be Kentucky's James McKinney and Minnesota's Walker Ashley, both of whom seem committed elsewhere, but you never know…

Linebackers: This seems to be the one position for late-season drama. We start with one good kid that want to be a Buckeye but is still waiting for an offer: Glenville's Freddie Lenix. Then we go to the guys with offers that the Buckeyes still have legit shots at bagging: Rico McCoy, Elijah Hodge, Anthony Felder, Andre Mathis and Alex Daniels. They will get two from that group and the two Ohio kids might have to be patient while they sort it out.

Safeties: Perhaps Freddie Lenix could fit here and perhaps superstar-in-the-making Jamario O'Neal will fit here. Eric Sledge could be a hammer at safety or a wideout and relative newcomer Anderson Russell could fit in here as well.

Cornerbacks: In addition to the flexible aforementioned Hartline and Amos, OSU has O'Neal and Malcolm Jenkins aboard. The Bucks are still looking at Virginia's Sean Smalls but they have lots of options here…

Kickers: Will Josh Huston get yet another year? Will Kyle Turano? If not, the punting chores should come down to AJ Trapasso or Jonathon Skeete and the placekicking duties to Aaron Pettrey or walk-on Ryan Pretorious. Yes, that's right.

Offers

New to the offer sheet

Austin Spitler: A Division III linebacker that was off the radar screen for most of the recruiting season, Spitler has been compared to AJ Hawk (and who wouldn't want him to be…). Hard-nosed, with a nasty streak, it was assumed he would honor his "commitment" to go visit Wisconsin next weekend and then truly commit to Ohio State but he pulled the trigger prior to his subsequent "official" Columbus visit. Since OSU could be taking as many as four LB's, this projects as a good pick-up.

OJ Murdock: Another four-star receiver from Florida (think Santonio, Albert Dukes, Chris Gamble) who has expressed some desire to visit Columbus. We shall see…

Other changes to the offer sheet

Brian Cushing: He took OSU off his list (not even in the Top7?), so we have removed him from our "amongst the leaders" list.

Nick Harris: Once a long shot, he is a no-shot now.

Ray Henderson: The focus has moved to Oak Creek teammate Travis Beckum and there is no thought of landing them both.

Lawrence Wilson: A disappointment, but Lawrence surprised many and chose Notre Dame over the Buckeyes. As noted, he is now back into play.

Justin King: The biggest surprise here wasn't that he didn't commit to Ohio State; it was that he picked Penn State over Michigan. It almost seems like a small victory!

Jason Gwaltney: This "soft verbal" to West Virginia still remains highly sought by the Buckeyes.

Carlos Thomas: The Buckeyes are fighting with Georgia Tech over Thomas and Maurice Wells. They won the fight over Thomas…

Kyle Williams: Kyle committed to Purdue.

Richard Gordon: Certainly not new to the list, but since the coaches were down at his basketball game last week, we fired up the interest again…

The Visit List

Weekend of December 3: Uncommitted: Rico McCoy, Walker Ashley, Andre Mathis, James Laurinaitis and Lamont Robinson.

Committed: Brian Hartline, Doug Worthington and Andre Amos.

Weekend of December 10: Uncommitted: Anderson Russell

Committed: Alex Boone, Malcolm Jenkins, Austin Spitler and Rob Schoenhoft.

Weekend of January 7: Uncommitted: Anthony Felder, Travis Beckum

The Recruiting Chart

There has been some talk within the staff offices (yes, really here at Bucknuts and probably just rumor at the WHAC) that the coaches have decided to go with 22 scholarships for this class of 2005. So, I have updated the chart to accommodate the positions they seem to be looking for: Three running backs (have to find a fullback?), one quarterback, three wide receivers, three offensive linemen, four defensive linemen, four linebackers (hey – that's what we hear…) and four defensive backs. The kicker is a freebie, this year.

Here's what that chart would look like then:
