SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:09:54 PM)
My feeling is he can get where he wants to get at Florida a lot quicker than he can at Notre Dame. Plus, I bet Fla. pays $2 million a year, while ND would probably not approach that (they go for the "prestige of the job" angle in lowballing people).
buckmark (Dec 3, 2004 1:10:00 PM)
Steve, the Army AA game might be a huge day for Buckeye recruiting. It looks like there could be up to 5 recruits naming the Buckeyes that day. Is Gary going? Should be fun!
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:10:27 PM)
Gary will be there and Scout.com will have exclusive coverage of all events -- the junior combine, the verbal announcements and the game.
redondo (Dec 3, 2004 1:10:33 PM)
Hi Steve - Playing out the U. Meyer scenario either way - UF or ND - which way would have the greatest impact on OSU recruiting? Or, does it not really matter? Thank you.
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:11:56 PM)
I don't think it matters. ND with Willingham was coming into Ohio (L. Wilson) and getting a handful of guys OSU wanted, not that many. OSU and Fla. did not go head to head that much, again just a handful of guys. One coach or one program will not faze Ohio State's efforts that much. OSU recruits well because it has a great tradition and great product. It recruits really well when the staff is motivated and gets after it.
skeelo (Dec 3, 2004 1:12:01 PM)
have you heard anything about zwick transferring?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:12:29 PM)
Just the board rumor that he and Shepas were "looking." He was at practice yesterday and Coach Tressel said there have been no "defections" yet.

D-V, got to go with my Aces over St. Henry. D-IV, Versailles. D-III Benedictine over St, Marys, D-II Brookhaven shocks Avon Lake and ends the streak at 29, D-I Colerain beats McKinley like a drum. Hey, when Centerville is 10-0 and loses 35-0 to Colerain that tells me everything I need to know.
buckmark (Dec 3, 2004 1:15:00 PM)
Do you really feel Worthington is waivering?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:17:22 PM)
He said he was going to look around. I guess some people think "wavering" is too strong of a word. I don't argue semantics. I used the word. Gary is convinced he is "solid" for Ohio State. I think we'll know more on Sunday when he gets home. If he says, "That's it, I'm not going anywhere else." then we'll know. But if he says, "I liked it, but I want to see what else is out there" ... I'm sorry, that's wavering. Just wait and see I guess. Obviously, if you're an OSU fan and follow this closely, a difference maker like he may be at DE is as big a get as they can have in this class.
ImBack45 (Dec 3, 2004 1:17:44 PM)
Steve, of all the recruits still out there for us who do you think are the three most talented? Thx.!
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:17:51 PM)
Three most talented? ...
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:19:46 PM)
Probably Mo Wells, Sel Lymon and Jason Gwaltney. McCoy and/or Hodge would also be huge.
ODOGG45 (Dec 3, 2004 1:20:00 PM)
Steve - what players are the coaches recruiting the hardest
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:20:32 PM)
Probably the ones I just mentioned. They are working hard to get back in on WR Derrick Williams from Md. as well. Alex Daniels would also be a nice pick-up ...
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:21:57 PM)
I just looked at all the guys they have a legit shot at. At LB, they have Hodge, Mathis, McCoy, Daniels, Robinson all on the front burner and Laurinaitis, Beckum, Felder and Lenix on some form of simmer. They may take 3 more LBs in addition to Spitler. Fickell is doing a bang-up job as a recruiter and as the position coach recruiting that spot.
buckmark (Dec 3, 2004 1:22:13 PM)
There is talk that the Board of Trustees may have something to say about the state of the Athletic Department (Basketball and Football both under investigation). Do you think they would do anything drastic in an effort to "clean it up"? Some feel Holbrook is capable of anyhting!! LOL!
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:24:10 PM)
Well, I would not say Geiger is a lame duck, but he's made it clear he probably won't be around 2 more years. He will probably see OSU through these investigations and go on from there. Beating Michigan cures a lot of woes. I think there is concern from Holbrook over what's going on when athletics is the lead story on the 6 p.m. news. It ain't supposed to be that way. She will want a strong (very strong) replacement for AFG.
buckmark (Dec 3, 2004 1:24:23 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:24:32 PM)
In terms of recruits ...
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:26:05 PM)
OSU's biggest needs are at RB, DL and LB. They need some difference makers at each spot. I think they will take 2 RBs, 1 or 2 DL and 2 or 3 LBs. The key names are probably the ones I listed -- Mo Wells, Gwaltney, Ashley, maybe L.Wilson (now), McCoy, Hodge, Daniels and/or Mathis.
redondo (Dec 3, 2004 1:26:10 PM)
Hi Steve - Is A. Daniels this season's Fred Davis - looking for any reason to not come to OSU? Thank you.
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:27:19 PM)
Could be, but Duane had a great quote from him when he said if he was really sold on OU he would have verbaled there by now. Just wait and see. He will also visit Minnesota. I'm not 100 percent convinced OU's interest is as high as we've been led to believe. His visit there was postponed due to "weather reasons" when nobody could see why that was. Hmmm.
Buckz99 (Dec 3, 2004 1:27:25 PM)
Steve, I know it's a slim year for TE's in Ohio, but do you see us getting anyone this year from OOS or are we going to focus on TE next year?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:28:32 PM)
I don't see any TEs in this class. The only two mentioned, Gordon and Gowland, don't have visits set. Maybe the McKinney kid from Ky. could play there, but he is such a long shot to even visit. I suppose they'll come back next year. OSU has Hamby, Frost and Nicol coming back.
qbatheart (Dec 3, 2004 1:28:41 PM)
what is the status of Zwick---have you heard anything about him considering transfering
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:29:22 PM)
This was asked and answered. I have heard nothing. The rumors were he and Shepas were "looking around" last week. he was at practice yesterday. We'll ask him if we get a chance next week.

Dola Hardin Northern, champs in D-VI, with a 20-8 win over Norwalk St. Paul. Congrats to the Polar Bears. Next up at 3 is IV with Youngstown Mooney-Versailles. Then you have the D-II Avon Lake-Brookhaven war at 7.
ImBack45 (Dec 3, 2004 1:30:40 PM)
Steve, don't you feel it's a bad sign for OSU the longer Lawrence Wilson goes without verbaling to OSU, when it was supposedly between us and ND the first time around. Doesn't make sense to me.
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:32:24 PM)
This just happened 3 days ago, so I think we need to give Lawrence his space to figure out what he wants to do. He has made his officials to OSU, ND and Pitt. The key will be if he makes any other officials. Have not heard that he has scheduled any. Brandon Harrison, I believe, has one already this weekend. He didn't let any moss grow under his feet. Wilson will decide when he's ready, and it may very well not be Ohio State. We'll see.
Buckz99 (Dec 3, 2004 1:32:44 PM)
Steve, Even with the recent changes at ND, I don't see them joining the Big Ten any time soon. In the next 3-5 years, who do you see at the likely schools to possibly join the Big Ten? Also, who would you like to personally see join?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:34:32 PM)
No, they seem steeled in their resolve to remain independent. You always hear rumors that the Big Ten might like to add a team. Pittsburgh or Syracuse get rumored now and then. But the numbers do NOT add up. ...
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:37:40 PM)
Andy Geiger told me that unless you add a meaningful school (read that: Notre Dame) you will not realize a large enough TV money increase to offset having to split the pot with another school -- even with a championship game. It's a loser. Plus, you see what's happened to national title contenders in other conferences in title games. They get knocked off. Plus, it would take luster off Michigan-Ohio State (in Geiger's mind). I agree with Andy. The only school that makes this worthwhile is Notre Dame. Criminy, they play 3 Big Ten teams already every year. What's 5 more? I'd bring them in and let them keep their TV deal. ABC would go along because they and/or ESPN would be guaranteed 4 ND Big Ten games every year when they have to go on the road in the conference. It's a no brainer, guys. But ND doesn't want to give up its independence. No other school makes it worthwhile.
buckmark (Dec 3, 2004 1:38:10 PM)
Is there any way to know the timeframe for word on the football investigation? It sure would be nice to get something before NLOI day.
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:38:38 PM)
There is no timeline. It will end when it ends. The academic thing lingered for 3 months before they abruptly declared it over last Dec., I believe.
skeelo (Dec 3, 2004 1:38:42 PM)
can you see anyone in this class who could make an immediate impact next season?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:38:46 PM)
Oh yeah ...
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:39:56 PM)
O'Neal, clearly, could take some of the heat of Youboty and Ginn (or Underwood) at corner. Boone could push for playing time at RT, perhaps. Worthington could make an immediate impact at DE, where they're really hurting (IMHO). Those are the 3 (and any RB who makes an immediate impact).
ODOGG45 (Dec 3, 2004 1:40:01 PM)
Steve - does Boekman throw a tight spiral with zip on the ball ?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:41:25 PM)
Yes, I think so. He made some college throws last spring that looked good to me. He has great feel and touch. He knows where his guys are. He threw a lot of over-the-shoulder lob passes that went for large gainers, too. I like his make-up. He is a smart competitor, good athlete and has above average mobility for a big guy. This is not a Navarre statue.
buck35 (Dec 3, 2004 1:41:28 PM)
Any chance Worthington ends up at tackle or TE?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:41:38 PM)
No, I think he is a difference maker at DE.
labsbeabmm (Dec 3, 2004 1:41:43 PM)
I think Zwick would be foolish to stay at OSU, though I hope he does. Even if Smith goes down Boeckman is waiting in the wings
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:44:03 PM)
Well, Zwick is definitely swimming upstream right now. He needs to get better and hope Smith falters. Smith's play in the UM game was uncanny, though. He made every right move, felt pressure and got out of there in the nick of time so many times it was unbelievable. Will fate always smile on him like that? Or is he just that good? Hmmm. Yes, it is great that Boeckman is ready. If he had to play next year for however long, I would not be dismayed.
Buckz99 (Dec 3, 2004 1:44:46 PM)
Steve, It was great to see OSU pull some quality players from Pennsylvania last year. It's been a while since we got significant talent out of that state and they all seem like they'll be good Buckeyes. Was that just the stars coming together for us or have we made some good contacts within Pennsylvania that will bring in more talent in the future?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:46:56 PM)
Coach Daniels deserves the credit. He got 4 really good players out of Pa. last year. If they can get 1 a year from there, that's good. Those 4 were the first ones they've gotten from there since Homa in 1995. I would not look for that kind of haul again anytime soon. Unless I'm missing somebody, Mathis may be the only Pa. guy they have a serious shot at this year. They are all over Walls and Lyons' brother Wes for next year.
buck35 (Dec 3, 2004 1:47:16 PM)
Any chance Marcus Freeman starts in the middle next year? I think one of these young guys needs reps.
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:47:28 PM)
Next year ... over Schlegel or D'Andrea?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:47:32 PM)
Not a chance ...
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:48:22 PM)
But I agree that Freeman and Hoobler, in particular, will need some time. They should get it if the Buckeyes are as good as some think they might be. My feeling is the projected LBs for 2006 would be Kerr at MLB and those 2 outside (if not anybody better).
ODOGG45 (Dec 3, 2004 1:48:25 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:48:55 PM)
Good for them. Great hire by the Gators. ND fired Willingham for what? You reap what you sow.
Buckz99 (Dec 3, 2004 1:49:00 PM)
Steve, What did you think of Mark Snyder's overall performance in his first year a D coordinator? Do you think he improved over the course of the year? What do you think he did well and what does he needs to work on for next season?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:51:19 PM)
It was rocky in the beginning as he grew into the job. Yes, he did improve over the course of the year. Their final exam they held a team averaging 31 a game to 21. They gave up 1 TD in the last 50 minutes of clock time. Did well? Turned them loose at the end. Work on? Recruiting (ha ha) because he'll have a veteran defense next year and another young one in 2006. Seriously, they need to maintain their control on the opponent's running game. OSU lost games, in some part, this year because they allowed the opponent to chew up valuable yards on the ground and clock time.
osufan25 (Dec 3, 2004 1:51:34 PM)
Hey Steve, Is Doug Worthington really rethinking his committment or is this just a rumor?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:53:20 PM)
This was answered earlier. Doug's words a week or 2 back was he was thinking of other visits. There was a Hot News report that Alabama was involved in some way. As I said above, if he goes home from this weekend and says he won't make any other visits, that's it. But if he goes home and says he still wants to look around, draw your own conclusion. Gary says he's solid and Gary usually bats a pretty high percentage. Smile (ha ha).
Buckz99 (Dec 3, 2004 1:53:27 PM)
Steve: With Alex Boone coming in, I've kind of lost track of Mitchum. How did he progress this year and what do you see as his potential? Also, will he end up as a right tackle or guard in your opinion?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:54:31 PM)
The coaches liked Mitchum's progress. I think he could play either tackle or guard, depending on need. Spring football will be fun to see how Bollman shuffles the deck. He should have as many as 15 OL to work with, particularly if Boone and Cordle enroll early.
osufan25 (Dec 3, 2004 1:54:38 PM)
Steve, next year Glenville seems to be loaded again. How many of those guys do you think will get a look from OSU?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:56:11 PM)
The QB Arvell Nelson is 6-4, 180, so start there. Devin Jones (6-1, 175) is a prospect at WR. OL Bryant Browning (6-4, 290) and DE Robert Rose are also strong prospects. Yep, they'll be loaded and college recruiters will be there non-stop again.
ODOGG45 (Dec 3, 2004 1:56:23 PM)
Steve - could Meyer to Florida be a big enough of a reality check for Notre Dame that it may force them to join a conference ?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:57:17 PM)
No, they are steeled in their resolve to remain an independent. The only way they would come to the Big Ten, hat in hand, would be if NBC tells them to step off.
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 1:59:32 PM)
NBC may consider that if ND plans to go ahead and dummy down the schedule, like they've talked about. I understand they're bringing in San Diego State down the line. Does the Peacock network want to pay top $$$ for the Fighting Irish and the Aztecs? I would think not.

Pennsylvania is ok but im much more excited when I see those Cali, Florida kids. Why dont we get more from Texas?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 2:02:25 PM)
Ohio State recruits Ohio and Florida the best. They are on foreign soil, pretty much, everywhere else. They've done well to cherrypick some kids from N.Y. and N.J. as well. It's just off the beaten path for them to go to Texas. Plus, Texas (Brown), A&M (Franchione) and Okla. (Stoops) are going to be hard to beat for any difference maker kind of kids worth even going down there for.

labsbeabmm (Dec 3, 2004 2:07:44 PM)
In regard to Smith, I suspect he is not yet as good as he was in the Michigan game but showed he can likely be a better that average big 10 QB
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 2:07:50 PM)
Great observation ...
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 2:08:04 PM)
The thing I heard after the UM game was "Where was that all year?" ...
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 2:10:01 PM)
My response was Smith was not capable of that prior to that day. It's like he is a computer and they programmed him over 5 weeks to play like that and he did it on the biggest day of the year. That is not to say he will ever play like that again (it would be nice to see that 25 more times ... ha ha). He will likely still make some mistakes and will probably cost them a game at some point along the line. That's just the way things go at this level. But if he can approach that level or reach it a few more times, he can still be a special player, in my mind.
buck35 (Dec 3, 2004 2:10:29 PM)
Any chance the Tressle would bring Ginn Sr in as a DB coach / recruiter? Ty Willingham for AD. Great guy!
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 2:11:16 PM)
No, I think Ginn, for now, believes his mission in life is changing kids' lives right there on the front line at Glenville. You have to go there and see it to believe it, honestly.
Buckz99 (Dec 3, 2004 2:11:20 PM)
Steve: I'm probably missing someone, but I can't think of a difference maker since David Boston to come from Texas. Has this been a lack of effort by OSU in recruiting Texas because it doesn't seem like we have that many players from Texas making visits or even on our radar each year. Will playing in the Alamo Bowl this year be a springboard to getting back into the Texas "market"?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 2:13:36 PM)
Youboty prepped in Houston, so he counts. Schlegel grew up in Texas but came here from Air Force. Hopefully the Alamo Bowl will help OSU's presence in Texas. Most of the talent is concentrated in Dallas and Houston.
Buckz99 (Dec 3, 2004 2:13:41 PM)
Steve: The D-Line really showed their youth this season and it showed on the long, time chewing drives you discussed earlier. What do you expect out of this group next season and who do you feel will step up and be the most significant difference maker?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 2:15:03 PM)
Most everybody is back, except Fraser. They need everybody to step up and play like upperclassmen. Pitcock had a borderline great year. He is living up to the recruiting hype. They need Richardson, Kudla, Gholston and Patterson to bring it in a big way next year.
crazynuts (Dec 3, 2004 2:15:16 PM)
Steve, how are we looking for TE's in Ohio for 2006? It seems like TE was a down position all over the country this year. And we could use one
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 2:16:11 PM)
Massillon has a kid, Brett Huffman, who has been to several OSU games. He may be undersized at 6-4, 210 or so, though. He had 25 catches this year. Tight end is a big need. It looks like there will not be one in this class, so next year will be key.

Hi Steve - Thank you for bringing Ramzy back occasionally!!! Any chance Kyle could do maybe a once a week "My thoughts" on basketball like Duane does for football? Thank you.
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 2:18:40 PM)
Ramzy, as I understand, contributes as he has time. Same, pretty much, goes for Kyle. We're lucky to be surrounded with a lot of great talent. Some of the things Duane, Gary, Charles, Dave and Kyle write just amaze me. The magazines coming out 1/1/2005 will really be strong (BTM and Ohio High).
Buckz99 (Dec 3, 2004 2:18:43 PM)
Steve: How good is Miles Schlichter and what is the % chance that he ends up a Buckeye next year?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 2:21:13 PM)
I think the jury is out on that. He is not in a passing scheme. He had a really good year as a leader on a 10-0 team. That says a lot. He's a winner. Percent chance he's a Buckeye? As Tressel might say: "I would say this, if they lose one of their current quarterbacks, probably a lot better than if they don't." I doubt they take more than 1 next year ... unless somebody leaves. Next year is the best year for QBs in this state I can remember ...
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 2:22:00 PM)
They have some options in Ohio with Schlichter, Mike Hartline, Rudy Kirbus, Nate Davis, Brennan Glass and several others.

Steve: If we get Wells, do you see us changing the offensive scheme for him somewhat like we did for Troy Smith? With Wells, I'd like to see him utilized like Bush from USC, passed out of the backfield, screens and utilizing him as a receiver against linebackers.
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 2:27:16 PM)
Yes, I'd assume they would find a way to "involve" him.

I mentioned the magazines earlier. You need to subscribe or upgrade to Bucknuts The Magazine and Ohio High (they are separate) by Monday at 5 p.m. to get on the mailing list for these January issues. They are worth it.

And I will be on ONN's All-Ohio Team show at 6:30 p.m. Saturday before the Division I title game. Check it out.

what's the top h.s. football talent area in the state next season?
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 2:30:51 PM)
St. Ignatius and Glenville are like regions unto themselves, but maybe the Canton-Akron area with the likes of M. Hartline, Wells, Palmer, Alliance
SteveHelwagen (Dec 3, 2004 2:31:30 PM)
Marlington's Troy Paisley and Huffman and Dirk Dickerhoff from Massillon.
