Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau

In today's chat with Gary Housteau, we talked about the latest recruiting news, a little Clarett, some team issues, and more. Check out the transcript below.

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 1:08:14 PM)
Hi everyone...I just posted a story on Lawrence Wilson from last night and I'm late arriving. Sorry about that. It was a great weekend of high school football and OSU had their first big recruiting weekend as well. What's on your mind?

Jkrop (Dec 9, 2004 1:08:17 PM)
How close are we to landing McCoy and Wells?

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 1:10:25 PM)
Hi Jkrop...I like to boldly go where no one else goes so I'll put both Wells and McCoy in the 99 percentile category.

BuckeyeDave (Dec 9, 2004 1:10:30 PM)
How is it that the Canton Repository is the only news source (i've seen) that is reporting the recent developments in the Clarett case?

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 1:13:54 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...there's nothing to report at this juncture. To be honest I've already forgotten more about the Clarett fiasco than the Repository recently reported. All they did was ask Geiger about the 100 million rumors that were floating around the Canton area last weekend. It's really a shame what Clarett has done to himself or has allowed to be done on his behalf. Sad!

comeonlawrence (Dec 9, 2004 1:14:00 PM)
Gary, I live in the DC area and was thinking of watching Rico McCoy play some ball and maybe giving him an OSU hat. From what I've heard lately, this would be a recruiting violation. Is that the case (?), and if so, how do Universities police these types of things?

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 1:20:13 PM)
Hi comeonlawrence...are you referring to Lawrence Wilson in your name? Technically if you're an alum of Ohio State or are a member of one of the school's booster club it's a violation if you provide any benefits to a potential recruit. Steve knows all of those rules. I'm sure if you give the kid a hat anonymously and say Go Bucks! it's not a big deal. Rico has already told me that it's amazing how many OSU people he meets that are always telling him about OSU. Again I don't know the rules to that question but common sense is common sense and as long as you're not proactively trying to lure the kid to OSU as a representative of OSU...what harm is there? Besides McCoy doesn't need anyone to lure him here any way!

Kirk (Dec 9, 2004 1:20:58 PM)
In my opinion it's vague yet precise... if you are a Buckeye fan, you are classified as an Ohio State booster and are subject to the same rules boosters are -- no contact, gifts, etc.

Kirk (Dec 9, 2004 1:21:11 PM)
If I recall correctly

Coreyo34 (Dec 9, 2004 1:21:15 PM)
Is there any chance, in your estimation, that Sanchez would reconsider his commitment to USC if Chow left? Or was that already discussed prior to Sanchez' s verbal?

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 1:23:19 PM)
Hi Coreyo34...I just don't see Ohio State getting involved with Sanchez at this point under any circumstance.

JKrop (Dec 9, 2004 1:23:30 PM)
So you believe we will land McCoy and Wells and it sounds like Ashley is coming in. Does this make us a #1 kind of class? If not, who on our list would make us a #1 class?

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 1:27:58 PM)
I still think we've got some work to do with Ashley but I'm more encourage with our chances now than ever before. Some of the comments that I've personally heard about Ashley from the players visiting last weekend, off the record, are over the top. But USC just makes me uncomfortable to say the least when they're involved with any of our potential recruits. Ashley and Worthington and McCoy would all be huge OOS additions to this class and would give us a tremendous national flavor no matter how we're ranked. There's a real good chance all three will be Buckeyes but I'm happy with the two and three is a bonus.

marksgforce (Dec 9, 2004 1:28:05 PM)
if we have even a 20% chance of landing him, which single player do the coaches most want to sign? who is your top unsigned player that OSU has even a reasonable shot at?

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 1:31:23 PM)
Hi marksgforce that's tough now with Wilson and Ashley so prominent in the mix now but I would say that Gwaltney is a player that JT really wants a great deal...IMHO.

efox13 (Dec 9, 2004 1:31:33 PM)
Gary, were you at the games last weekend? How about Brookhaven? Daniels is a real specimen, but could you imagine putting D. Jones aggressiveness in his body? Wow.

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 1:35:04 PM)
Hi efox13...I've already mentioned that I've seen Brookhaven twice this past year and Dominic Jones was by far the best player that I saw on their team. I really like their running back Antoine Roberts as well although he's not OSU material but he's really good. Daniels can play some football as well no doubt. He's so big and fast. He can actually be a defensive end in my opinion. And he's a hammer in short yardage running with the football. Daniels is an athlete and a player no question and I'll take him first and worry about finding him a position later.

MBuck37 (Dec 9, 2004 1:35:25 PM)
I just came on so forgive me if this has been asked..Do we have a chance at J Stewart? or are our best options Gwaltney,Ringer, or Wells.

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 1:39:32 PM)
Hi MBuck37... I would say we have two chances at Stewart...slim and none and slim just left the building. Smile. I like all three of the other guys that you mentioned and I'll say Wells is the closest thing to a sure thing right now. I feel good about Gwaltney but USC looms large with him. And I think Ringer will do anything he can up to a point to become a Buckeye. They could end up with all three somehow but I think two is more likely.

BuckeyeDave (Dec 9, 2004 1:39:43 PM)
What is your gut feeling on Santonio Holmes going pro? Is it dependant on how he does in the Alamo Bowl?

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 1:43:19 PM)
I say that Holmes wouldn't be doing himself any justice if he goes pro after this year. My gut says no based on common sense. He's a great talent no doubt and I don't know how much of a financial hardship situation his family is in with two (at least one) children but he would be much better off with another year or even two.

Dingbuck (Dec 9, 2004 1:43:29 PM)
Daniels seems like the kind of guy who is playing the game such that he might get left out, at least in OSU's eyes. Thoughts?

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 1:49:35 PM)
Hi Dingbuck...I can't figure Daniels out and I've stated that publicly before. I really don't think he's playing any game he's just enamored with these schools that are showing him any attention. I think that OSU knows where they stand with him if that's even at all possible. It even looks like he might visit officially now. So I'm sure the Brookhaven people must be working with the OSU staff to know where Daniels stands at all times. I don't know where he'll end up honestly and I really don't have an honest inkling either. He's a guy that I need to talk to soon and take the gloves off while I'm doing it to find out where he stands. Smile!

wells20 (Dec 9, 2004 1:49:52 PM)
Gary, This may have already been asked, but are there any of those winks out there for us to get escited about?

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 1:53:48 PM)
Hi wells20...I would say from what I know that McCoy and Lenix are two of my top winks to be excited about. I also am pretty happy about my wink with Wells. I've never really defined what the wink stands for other than there's a really good reason why the wink is around when you see him. The wink is a really good thing!

comeonlawrence (Dec 9, 2004 1:53:55 PM)
Gary, is it true that we have some pretty good OL in OH next year? If so how are they liking tOSU? And yes, Lawrence Wilson is the ref. How are our chances with him?

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 1:59:42 PM)
I can speak about Wilson because I just spoke to him last night. I think our chances are really good with him now but he really gives me no specific indication to think that he will be a Buckeye. He seems again to be sincerely deliberating between the three schools now. I remember his father telling me when it looked as if Wilson would go to ND that his son would never go to that school up north though...so I hope that indeed was a sincere statement. I have to think he's a Buckeye. I'm going to his hoop game Saturday I think. Ohio lineman next year I can think of Palmer from GlenOak and Browning from Glenville that jump out at me. Joe Thomas from St. Edward is a player. How's that for three names right now? Brown from Cincinnati Princeton is another. I'm sure there's more that Duane likes already.

yooperbuck (Dec 9, 2004 1:59:49 PM)
John Kerr-freshman at IU. Sat out last year because of transfer. Did not play this year. Is not on a scholie. How much eligibility does he have left and also will he be a factor a lb next year and 2006? He is tough as nails.

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 2:05:20 PM)
Hi yooperbuck...I'm proudly on record behind John Kerr the football player but from what I've been told by people that know, he is his own worst enemy off the field. I would guess that he still would have two more years after this season but he had the opportunity he was hoping for when D'Andrea went down with an injury and he obviously blew it. His future is a big giant question mark, but he's given his detractors every reason they could want to say that he wasn't worthy of an OSU ship in the first place. I hope he gets his act together and gives it one more try even if he only has one year to play when D'Andrea and Schlegel are graduated. I liked him in high school a lot and he was impressive in his one year at Indiana. But it is what it is now.

buckmark (Dec 9, 2004 2:05:35 PM)
Gary, the last couple of years it seems that we have not really closed out the classes with a bang. What are your feelings for this year? It looks like we may get quite a few verbals during the Army game.

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 2:09:54 PM)
Hi Buckmark...I see the Buckeyes doing really at the all-star with the potential of McCoy, Wells and Gwaltney announcing their allegiance to OSU. I know Boone will down there working on guys and I'm sure there are others that have a really good chance of coming on board. I haven't looked at the roster yet but I know that O'Neal and Lenix aren't playing in the game although Ginn Sr. said he was still holding out hope for either one of them. We might be all done by the time All-Star game is over. Scout.com is sponsoring the event and I'll be all over everyone down there like white on rice. Smile.

twotimes (Dec 9, 2004 2:10:00 PM)
Do you think that Wells or Gwaltney or Ringer would have a chance of coming in and being our no. 1 back in 05?

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 2:13:16 PM)
Hi twotimes. I really think whoever surfaces as the number one back after spring ball will be the top man next year. I think Gwaltney will get an obvious look cause of his size and speed in one package. My best guess is that Wells and or Ringer would redshirt their first year and in Ringer's case...he could possibly grayshirt. I don't know that would happen and I doubt that it would but it wouldn't be so bad of an idea for him if you think about it.

snoman (Dec 9, 2004 2:13:23 PM)
Who do you think were highly scouted seniors that OSU got that turned into a bust. Also that Rico Mccoy looks like MC, hope not related

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 2:18:42 PM)
Hi snoman...separated at birth...I thought the same. haha. I think OSU thought a lot of Harlen Jacobs at the time they recruited him out of Atlanta, Georgia and I really liked the leg on Josh Huston when he came on board. Thomas Matthews was a tackling machine at Dillard High School in Florida and Andree Tyree, he has another year of eligibility, are guys that might not have lived up to the expectations they came here with four or five years ago. I don't want to use the word bust because they are still in a position to graduate from tOSU but they didn't fulfill expectations

37-21 (Dec 9, 2004 2:18:51 PM)
Gary, Is I. Guilford in or out?

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 2:20:25 PM)
My guess is he's out! I don't know if Steve had him in his numbers for being on scholarship or not but I would say he's out. Just a guess.

Daytonbuckeye (Dec 9, 2004 2:20:37 PM)
Gary, what is the news about Fred Davis out in USC. It appears he only played a couple of games. Have you heard/read anything about him lately? Thank you.

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 2:23:55 PM)
Hi Daytonbuckeye...Sorry nothing new to report on Fred Davis. He made his bed and I hope it's comfortable for him out there. I wouldn't count him out because he's a great athlete that still has a lot of maturing to go through. I'm sure he'll resurface at some point down the line. I liked Fred on a personal basis quite a lot. So did/does Coach Rios! I wish him well. I'm sure we would listen to what he would say if he came knocking on JT's door but I doubt that happens. And you're welcome!

marksgforce (Dec 9, 2004 2:24:04 PM)
Gary -- old old question. you've watched JT for years. he is philosophically a "multiple" offense coach -- whatever works and gets us more points than the other team. sounds like we will be a spread offense for a couple of years. do you see us hitting 30 points a game in 2005? (his top season at YSU was 29)

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 2:30:42 PM)
I really hate to dabble in this area. People know my opinions that I have of JT as an offensive coordinator and I'll leave it at that. I've been waiting for close to 20 years now to see him run the slightest hint of a dynamic offense with a mission and a method, other than pounding on the ground, and I've yet to really witness it. He has the capability in him to do it but you can't just go from pounding on the ground to a wide open spread attack and have nothing in between. I liken the Michigan game to a good spring game when he shows us what the teams been working on this week or in the spring and goes with it but then reverts back to his bread and butter. I'll stop right there. I'm sure I already upset some of you by now. I think we need a real offensive coordinator. We already have a great head football coach but I'd like to have a great and dynamic and imaginative offensive coordinator as well.

BuckeyeDave (Dec 9, 2004 2:30:53 PM)
Ohio St had 22 Academic All Americans, more than ANY other B10 university, yet Maldonaldo had trouble transferring a good chunk of his credits to Maryland. How do you reconcile that? We al know every school has its share of inordinately easy classes, do you know if Ohio St has more than its share?

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 2:33:17 PM)
BuckeyeDave I think it shows that the student athlete has to be willing to be the student as well. Unfortunately ESPN just chose to focus on the malcontents who didn't have what it took to be a student athlete and I'm not talking about Pagac and Carter.

mbuck37 (Dec 9, 2004 2:30:56 PM)
Let me say this: Teddy Ginn is a phoenominal talent. That being said, I feel his true "calling" so to speak is Lock Down Corner...Eventhough he is exciting to watch whenever he is on the field, that's where he belongs IMO..What's your thinking on this? Ginn,Yobouty,Whitner,Salley(add Oneal and Lenix next year) WOW!

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 2:35:53 PM)
mbuck37...I've always believed TGII will be a lock-down prime time cornerback in the NFL in the future. He's a great talent with the ball in his hands on offense and we'd be foolish not to utilize him while we have him but he's going to earn his big bucks as a cornerback and punt returner in the NFL. Can you say Deion Sanders? And the major thing is...Teddy thinks and believes that he's a cornerback more than anything else. So we shall see.

Kirk (Dec 9, 2004 2:36:28 PM)
Thanks everyone for stopping by today. I will get a chat transcript posted in the next few min. Stop by tomorrow for Steve's chat as well.

GaryHousteau (Dec 9, 2004 2:36:29 PM)
Thanks to Kirk and everyone else for chatting today. Kirk was a real sport being under the weather today and still performing flawlessly as he always does. See you back here next week after another recruiting class comes to town. Go Bucks!
