Hi everybody. Recruiting news is bound to slow down over the holidays but it will heat back up at the beginning of the new year. Let's try to stoke the fires some for a hour and so and talk recruiting if you're up to it. Fire away!
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 1:10:50 PM)
Hi froshbuck...from what I know I say we have a great chance with both Wells and McCoy at the AA game. As we know, young kids can change their minds but both of these guys are close to being sure things. McCoy was being a little more politically correct the last time we talked but I think he wanted to throw the scent off the obvious trail some. I'll get to speak with both of them in person before they announce officially so I will have a really good idea for sure. But as of now I say both guys are Buckeyes and so is Lenix for that matter! Smile!
buckmark (Dec 16, 2004 1:10:53 PM)
Hey Gary... McCoy, Hodge, Daniels, Lenix, Ashley, Wilson... looks like a pretty good finish to the class. Who do you have as a final 6-7?
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 1:16:29 PM)
I can't speak for Hodge but he's certainly in the mix from what I've been told by others. I can't speak for Ashley but some of the players have told me our chances are really good with him. USC always scares me in Ashley's case like I knew they would with Gwaltney. Daniels is an enigma but unless he gets blown away at Oklahoma and they don't let him come back to Ohio, I think he's a Buckeye. Lenix is a sure thing. And I'm starting to get a bit frustrated with Wilson. ND is out. Pitt is out. He likes OSU when he goes back down to visit there. Has all of his questions answers. But likes Michigan. Likes Florida now. Even likes ND all over again. I think we just let JT do his thing here. He has to close Wilson. We have the head coach advantage and that could do it in the end...like it did with Willingham and ND at first.
Gluester (Dec 16, 2004 1:16:36 PM)
just playing the challenges at lebron's chamber of fear until we begin...
Gluester (Dec 16, 2004 1:16:41 PM)
so, who is our top priority for this class?
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 1:22:17 PM)
Hi Gluester...I think the guys in Buckmark's question are all right up there as being realistic priorities that still remain. I'd love to close with Ashley and Wilson up front on defense. McCoy, Hodge and Daniels as LB's although Daniels could grow into a DE very easily. Great frame on Daniels. Lenix as a safety or Running back. All important pieces. I'd like to see another top true running back but it's looking dim at this point. Collington went to West Virginia so that tells you about Gwaltney right there. I liked Collington. We shall see what else the staff has for us soon. Feb. 2 is right around the holiday corner.
edbuck51 (Dec 16, 2004 1:22:22 PM)
Have you been a little surprised that F.Lenix has delayed making his decision? Does this put him at risk for having a schollie available in January?
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 1:26:05 PM)
Hi edbuck...between you and me...Lenix is a Buckeye!
rbuck (Dec 16, 2004 1:26:15 PM)
Any chance that we offer Ringer, and he decommits from MSU and commits to OSU?? I really think not offering him is going to come back and get us.
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 1:30:14 PM)
Hi rbuck...I don't know that answer. I spoke with some MSU people I know and they said that even they have tightened their perceived academic standards some (don't really know what that means) but they couldn't be any happier about landing Ringer. I think he's been put through the Ringer unfairly, IMHO, and I'm sure he and his family are very hurt by it. I can assure the OSU staff has treated Ringer fairly and if there is any chance to get him at the 11th hour and we offer, then there would be a good chance that we can still have him. But if his core GPA or lack of core courses are the reason like everyone says they are, then we couldn't promise him anything now. I would love to get my hands on his transcripts for his benefit.
Gadubbs (Dec 16, 2004 1:30:29 PM)
Gary, i saw that Antone Smith, another smaller back, was offered and is looking at the bucks. Just out of curiosity, does that mean that the chance of getting maurice wells are not as reassuring as they were just a few weeks ago?
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 1:34:35 PM)
Hi Gadubbs...Don't know much about Antoine Smith other than Duane has said he doesn't think we have any chance at him. That said. From what I know or have been told, I don't think we are going to have any problem with Wells. But knowing what happened with Dwayne Jarrett last year, when I was using the wink with him for about a day last year, sure anything can change even at the last minute. But I think we're really good with Wells.
(Dec 16, 2004 1:34:58 PM)
So we lost Mathis and Gwaltney. How about Ashley, McCoy and Wells? And is there anyone else that we could land that would raise an eyebrow?
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 1:38:56 PM)
Again...I feel really good about Wells and McCoy and I like what I'm hearing about Ashley as well. But Ashley has some more visits yet to take so you never know. I'm kind of hoping...call it a pipedream...that as long as Doering isn't committed to anyone that he and Boone will hit it off at the AA Bowl and that would raise an eyebrow or two. But other than Collins or Davis or even Felder, I don't know of any other big fish still out there that we have an outside shot at. I'm sure Duane or even Steve might have a name to throw around.
edbuck51 (Dec 16, 2004 1:39:11 PM)
Do Lawrence Williams and Alex Daniels give you the impression they are not really that excited about becoming Buckeyes?
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 1:45:02 PM)
Yes and no...They both start off a sentence by telling you something good about Ohio State and end the sentence by talking about other schools. I know Wilson pretty well now and I can't read him at all. I kind of knew it was Notre Dame when that initially happened but that took a while to surmise and now I kind of think it's going to be Ohio State but then I read an update from someone else and question my thinking. I think Daniels really wants to be a Buckeye but is flattered by any attention he gets from any school that is interested in him. I don't think he can make a mistake by Oklahoma playing for Stoops, but I think he would like to be a star in the Horseshoe some day. He likes the limelight. And he's a good guy. He really is. Wilson is too nice. Too softspoken. He's being very deliberate and I think JT is the reason he will pick OSU.
buck35 (Dec 16, 2004 1:45:08 PM)
Every publication i've seen Oneal is a top fifty player. Why no invite to the AA game? Did he have a poor season?
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 1:50:23 PM)
Hi buck35...The reason that O'Neal is not playing in the AA Bowl has nothing to do with his talent or his senior season or his ability as a football player.
redondo (Dec 16, 2004 1:50:31 PM)
Hi Gary - Regarding your observations on Wilson, is Coach Tressel regarded as that great of a closer? My observation from afar is that OSU does great with guys, particularly from Ohio, who have pretty much already bought into the "program", and less well with those less familiar and trying to decide late in the cycle. My question really is along the lines of can he reverse a pattern of late in the cycle losses and what does he need to do differently to achieve that? Thank you.
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 1:56:25 PM)
Hi redondo... you're right on with your reasoning and that's why I hope Wilson commits to us before signing so we don't embarrassingly lose him on signing day or right before. Wilson doesn't want to put his hoop team through any distraction but yet he wants to visit new schools all of the sudden. It doesn't make any sense to me. Commit now and get it behind you! He has more than enough information about the Buckeyes. But JT can close a kid in Ohio in their living room as well as anyone I'm sure. I've heard glowing things from parents of recruits. JT will even help with the dishes. Love the guy. But I'm surprised that Wilson would even consider Michigan...his dad told me his son would never go to that school up north...and now Florida because Urban Meyer and a former ND assist are there now. Geez! Come on Lawrence. Join your brother at The Ohio State University and get it over with.
witter (Dec 16, 2004 1:56:31 PM)
Can you please give us a grade so far on football recruiting?
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 2:02:10 PM)
Boone, O'Neal and Worthington make this a fantastic class already. But we need help for sure. Wells, McCoy, Lenix, Daniels, Wilson added to Schoenhoft and Denlinger and Hartline, Cordle and Amos and the others would be very impressive. I give it a B right now and if we can close just a few of those fix or six guys remaining that we all want...I'll say it's as good as it can possibly get...A-. We've filled some needs...other than a big running back. Gwaltney would make it an A but that's not going to happen.
trolley (Dec 16, 2004 2:02:25 PM)
It looks as though the whole Clarett/ESPN ordeal hasn't hurt our recruiting efforts so far -- do you think that could make the difference for recruits that view us evenly with other schools (ie McCoy, Ashley, etc.)
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 2:08:16 PM)
Hi trolley...I really don't think the Clarett/ESPN fiasco had any negative impact on recruiting and it couldn't have surfaced like it did at a worse possible time. I think it rallied the recruits we already had or were considering to be honest with you. The recruits were all defending JT and that's understandable. I also don't think you can flip this is any way and expect to reap any positive benefits out of it by landing a McCoy or Ashley because of it. I think we will get a McCoy or an Ashley, if we do, because they were able to see that Ohio State is the right place for them and not because of any ESPN story.
scribeohio (Dec 16, 2004 2:08:24 PM)
Gary, who are your top 5 Ohio players at the end of the season/playoffs? Great coverage by the way!
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 2:15:28 PM)
Thanks scribe... I really thought Dominick Goodman is a tremendous talent and was even better than I expected him to be. Basketball at Findlay just doesn't seem right if you ask me. Lenix played as good as anyone I saw. O'Neal delivered some punishing hits on defense throught the playoffs. Brinson is a pretty good player. Jahmal Brown, the RB from Benedictine is really good so is Troy Huddleston and John Dunn. All three of those guys will be top players next year. Dominic Jones of Brookhaven was as good as anyone that I saw. Daniels was a stud in the playoffs. Antoine Roberts their RB was really good. Keith Massey was really good. Bobby Doyle of Avon Lake is special and Trey Stross is pretty good as well. Boone is Boone. A lot of good players there. Take your pick. Tallmade has a good junior RB and QB. And there's others of course.
Buckeye1991 (Dec 16, 2004 2:15:43 PM)
Hi Gary- Do you think that losing Coach Spencer last year has an impact on our ability to recruit and develop running backs.
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 2:18:38 PM)
Hi Buckeye1991...I don't think losing Spencer has really hurt us in that regard at all. If we never lost Reecie you wouldn't even be asking that question right now. Losing Reecie prematurely hurt us more than losing Spencer IMHO.
dully (Dec 16, 2004 2:18:46 PM)
Any possibility of landing BIG recruit (4 or 5 star) before the bowl game? Just looking to keep positive after losing 3 (Ringer, Mathis, Gwaltney) and seeing U of M get 4 big ones already in December and possibly another 2 (Bass, Harris) by X-Mas. Thanks.
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 2:21:54 PM)
Not really because even Lenix will not announce until after he visits Ohio State. I don't know of any that are imminent in the near future at this point. Keep the faith. I think we will have a good January for sure.
BuckeyeDave (Dec 16, 2004 2:22:04 PM)
How important is it that Ohio St is the last ofr the first of a player's recruiting visits? Do we gain an advantage if we're last or first?
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 2:23:15 PM)
Going back to Dully's last question...don't count James McKinney completely out of the mix BTW. We have an outside shot still with him. Better than no shot.
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 2:27:01 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...I think having a big first week of recruiting in December is important and if it lands us McCoy and Ashley from that, than that's fantastic. A lot of people say it's good to get a recruit on your campus for a visit at any time. At this point most of the recruits really know where they're going by now or who it's likely down to but I don't think sooner or later really matters when it comes down to it. It's really where they feel the most comfortable at if they haven't already decided by now.
bukweat (Dec 16, 2004 2:27:13 PM)
Hi young man,Gary I really like the tapes of Laurinaitis and Spitler.Plus I love that the Minn. kid is captain of his hockey team.(bad ass). But it seems like people on this and other sites almost look at them as wasted offers because "only 3 stars & too SLOW"4.7 &4.72.But we have to have Mathis(4.69) & everyone is in love with Hodge 3 star 4.6 or 4.7.explain please.thanks
Seabus (Dec 16, 2004 2:27:15 PM)
Gary, not sure if this has been covered yet, but I wanted to get your thoughts on Spitler. Honestly I was so so on him just going off of offers and measurables, but after seeing his video, I think he could be a good player on the college level. Does he have the speed to play sideline to sideline in college?
GaryHousteau (Dec 16, 2004 2:33:14 PM)
Look at A.J. Hawk as the epitome of being a football player regardless of what your measureables might indicate. Both Spitler and Laurinaitis are football players regardless of any 40 times. You have to be a playmaker and make football plays...that's the way I judge kids no matter what their measureables or height or weight is. After watching just a few highlights on Spitler he looks to fit that category but I'm sure OSU has spent much more time evaluating him and Laurinaitis on film than any of us have. Not having seen either play in person...I too believe in the ...IN TRESSEL WE TRUST... motto.
Kirk (Dec 16, 2004 2:34:28 PM)
