Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau (12/23)

Lots of recruiting talk in today's chat with Gary Housteau. We have a transcript posted below.

spbuck (Dec 23, 2004 1:27:20 PM)
Hi Gary and Kirk, First question, Do we land Hodge? The well respected Helping Hand thinks he is coming our way. I Hope he is right. Your thoughts.........

Kirk (Dec 23, 2004 1:27:32 PM)
Hodge just committed to Wisconsin :(

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 1:28:05 PM)
Hi spbuck...I guess we don't. McCoy and Daniels must be in the plans.

spbuck (Dec 23, 2004 1:28:54 PM)
Wow!! I sure wasn't thinking they were our main competition.

OTC (Dec 23, 2004 1:29:08 PM)
What are your vibes when talking to recruits about the continued trouble at OSU?

spbuck (Dec 23, 2004 1:30:41 PM)
Well then, what are our chances with McCoy and Daniels. Which prospect do you think is most likely to end up at OSU?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 1:30:44 PM)
Hi OTC...until I spoke with McKinney last week, I haven't heard anything negative from the kids about worrying about probation. And now I heard that Worthington might have mentioned that too but he's probably tired of explaining why he's taking other visits.

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 1:32:29 PM)
I think we already have Spitler and Laurinaitis in the fold, Lenix as well but maybe not at linebacker, and the coaches feel good about McCoy and Daniels. At least I hope it is how it will shake out. It almost has to now.

witter (Dec 23, 2004 1:32:47 PM)
do you worry about us going on probation?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 1:32:47 PM)

buck35 (Dec 23, 2004 1:38:16 PM)
Watching video PennSt may have got the two best athletes in the country. That's huge for a team that needed play makers. The Big11 is pulling some great players.

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 1:38:16 PM)
Hi Buck35...I'm excited for Penn State because that should help keep Joe Paterno around even longer. I do think both King and Williams are great talents and that bodes well for their future. Good for them. I can't wait to see those guys in San Antonio.

OTC (Dec 23, 2004 1:40:07 PM)
Gary wanted to get your thoughts on if and or when people start looking at Tressel as a problem with controlling his program?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 1:40:08 PM)
Hi OTC...JT already has so much goodwill built up that he will never be looked at the way Cooper would be if he were the man in charge right now. People will sympathize with JT before they accuse him or blame him for the transgressions of his players.

witter (Dec 23, 2004 1:42:07 PM)
Are there any JC players like jamie sumner we are looking at? perhaps a running back?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 1:42:07 PM)
JT hardly brought in any JC players at YSU (he did bring in some from CA, etc.) and with scholarships being so few and precious every year...I highly doubt he would use any at OSU at any point. That's just my opinion.

edbuck51 (Dec 23, 2004 1:44:16 PM)
Finally got into the chat. Had a little trouble getting in. Did you talk about Hodge? Was surprised that he didn't chose us or the Hawkeyes.

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 1:44:17 PM)
Hi edbuck51...thanks for your patience. Kirk, as always, is the savior who came to the rescue. I just found out from Kirk about Hodge and I was a little surprised I must admit. I was think he would choose Iowa for sure if it wasn't OSU. Good for him. I'll take McCoy and Daniels with Lenix as a possible option at LB.

spbuck (Dec 23, 2004 1:46:48 PM)
Gary, do you see a recruit in this class who we will look at as we do AJ Hawk today?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 1:46:48 PM)
I would say Jim Laurinaitis but I think we already have high expectations for the son of "Animal" of the Road Warriors or the Legion of Doom. He's a good one from all I can tell. Maybe Spitler is that LB that we all are overlooking at this time. I'm looking forward to seeing him play in the summer all star games if he's on either roster. I hope he is.

Guest (Dec 23, 2004 1:49:11 PM)
Any prediction on any of our current guys transferring out?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 1:49:11 PM)
I sort of laughed about the Zwick transferring rumors and Rick Shepas confirmed my thinking there. Sure both he and the Zwick family were/are concerned about Justin's future but there was never that drastic of a situation such as the Mount Union and YSU rumors being thrown around. Or even any MAC school for that matter. I've heard them all. Right now I don't see any players transferring but attrition happens in some form every year.

buck35 (Dec 23, 2004 1:51:44 PM)
Iowa, Mich, Wisci are having great Decembers, I hope this waiting until the AA game doesn't blow up in JT's face. That would be bad.

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 1:51:44 PM)
Would it be any better if Boone and O'Neal and the others had waited until December to commit so we would have a good December too? I think not. Our class filled up early with quality and frankly I think we have guys already on the line that will give us a good January as well. In the end, we'll have a good class I'm certain. I just would like to have a good February for once, meaning closing out guys that are still out there on signing day instead of losing them in the end.

edbuck51 (Dec 23, 2004 1:56:23 PM)
What are you expecting from the OSU offense in the Alamo Bowl?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 1:56:23 PM)
Boy that's a tough question with a rusty offense in general from the layoff and a really rusty QB under center. I think we will see a lot of TGII, more than ususal, and that should bode well for OSU. I'm sure JT had a lot of time to draw up plays for Ginn to be used in the game. I wouldn't be surprised if he takes a few snaps in the shotgun formation. Why not? Give everyone next year something to think about. Ginn, Ginn and more Ginn on offense is the recipe for success.

OTC (Dec 23, 2004 2:00:36 PM)
I know Steve said he feels better about Gwaltney, are you hearing anything about him?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:00:36 PM)
OTC asks about Gwaltney...I really don't. I think it's all damage control he's spewing now after his obvious effection he displayed for USC. From my perspective, and I've spoken with him three or four times since his OSU visit, I felt right a way that OSU took over the top spot from WVU after visiting Ohio State based on my talks with him and I felt that USC easily became his favorite after his vist there. I just base that on my conversations with him. If he's saying things different now, I just think it's because he wants to make it sound better before he officially says USC at the Army AA Bowl. Again...just my opinion. USC all the way for Gwaltney. But I would like to be very wrong on this one.

edbuck51 (Dec 23, 2004 2:03:43 PM)
OSU's kicking has been outstanding since Tressel arrived. Do you think it is talent or coaching? What were his Youngstown teams like in kicking? Do you expect a major problem in the area next year?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:03:43 PM)
Can you say Jeff Wilkins? Wilkins was the best kicker I ever saw until Nugent came around. But JT has always had good kickers and even punters at YSU and now at OSU. Paul McFadden is an administrator at YSU and he went to YSU before the JT era, but I think he has had something to do with JT's approach to placekicking over the years. And JT has always had pretty good punters at YSU as well. One year he even had a long punter and a short punter because both guys were so good. Special teams were always big in every facet for JT's teams over the years.

cderekw (Dec 23, 2004 2:08:10 PM)
Gary, Does Boeckman have a realistic shot at challenging for the starting job. I just can't see it. If he was that close, I think there wouldn't have been such hoopla over his redshirt. Especially with Hartline and Schlister (sp) right around the corner. (We should get one of the them)

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:08:10 PM)
Hi cderekw... about Boeckman I too am in the minority about thinking Boeckman does not have a legitimate threat to win the starting job in the near future and I think the staff thinks that way also and will do everything possible to protect his redshirt this year, even if Zwick should get hurt...God forbid. I like Schoenhoft's attitude coming into the fold next season and he'll battle Boeckman in two years along with maybe Hartline or Schlischter. A lot of good and diverse talent there at the QB position. I think it's up to JT to be able to harness that talent to it's fullest and he's not the best at it I'm sorry to say.

edbuck51 (Dec 23, 2004 2:10:43 PM)
Do you have an opinion on Laurantitis?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:10:43 PM)
From what little video I've seen on him and heard about him, I'm pretty excited about him. And I love the versatility and his mentality and his family pedigree. He looks like a stick his nose in your face type of linebacker.

witter (Dec 23, 2004 2:12:41 PM)
Is the Texas home and home series going to happen?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:12:41 PM)
witter ask if the Texas series is going to happen and if it isn't for any reason I'm not aware of it. But I've been extremely busy over the past two weeks so I may have missed something. I'm looking forward to seeing Vincent Young in the Horseshoe. Maybe Kirk knows something here???

scribeohio (Dec 23, 2004 2:20:25 PM)
Gary, who are your fav Jr's in Ohio?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:20:25 PM)
Good question from scribeohio who asks who my favorite juniors in Ohio are...I can only go by the players that I've seen so far and at the very top of my list is Chris Wells. Size, speed, personality...great kid. I like Ray Small from Glenville and even Ray Fisher but Small is the big timer among the two. Rob Rose, Daven Jones and Bryant Browing are two top recruits also from Glenville. The center from Brookhaven is a top lineman. I like Hartline a lot. Ryan Palmer is a top lineman at GlenOak I like Robby Parris from Ignatius and I think Rudy Kirbus is a Nate Szep clone, nothing spectacular but very good. Benedictine has Jahmal Brown, Tory Huddleston and John Dunn. McKinley has a couple of really good young athletes. Jamal Miller from Tallmadge is good and so is Carter from Copley...both running backs. I like the linemen from Pickerington and from Kenton and Brown from Princeton but I haven't seen any of them and I haven't see Ross Homan from Coldwater. There's a few good ones. Duane will have more in the next Ohio High I'm sure.

oogatz (Dec 23, 2004 2:23:46 PM)
Hi Gary; just logged on. But, what is your general feeling about Hodge choosing Wisconsin? I don't think it's a big deal as I wanted Lenix as the small LB to go with McCoy, Daniels, Spitler, and Laurinaitis. Still think we get McCoy and Ashley?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:23:46 PM)
Hi oogatz about Hodge...not a big surprise. I know he liked OSU but I never really had any conversations with him. I thought he might go to Iowa in the end so Wisconsin is a bit of a surprise. Good get for them. I agree with the rest of your question and I do feel good about McCoy from what I know. I also feel pretty good about Ashley but I have nothing first hand to base that on. I would like us to close with Daniels and McCoy at LB...I think we have to. And Lenix of course no matter what position he plays.

witter (Dec 23, 2004 2:25:48 PM)
Give me a re-assurance that everything is going to be ok in Buckeyeland next fall!!!

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:25:48 PM)
witter wants to know if everything is going to be okay in Buckeyeland next year and I sure do think we're instore for another great season on the field. Let's hope things improve off the field as well.

madman (Dec 23, 2004 2:28:58 PM)
Gary, are you down in Texas yet?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:28:59 PM)
Hi madman...No I will be in San Antonio but not for the Buckeye game. I have the wonderful privilege of covering the U.S. Army All-American Bowl for Bucknuts and I'm grateful for the opportunity. I'm really excited about getting to go there. Steve will do his hurculean work that he normally does in San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl game.

buck35 (Dec 23, 2004 2:31:18 PM)
Where did McCoy visit this weekend?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:31:18 PM)
I spoke to McCoy briefly just yesterday and he had a terrible cold. I didn't ask him if he went to Syracuse or not but his brother goes there and they had their own Bowl game the other night so I highly doubt he was there visiting last weekend. It's just between Tennessee and Ohio State now anyway and I'm feeling pretty good about our chances.

oogatz (Dec 23, 2004 2:34:34 PM)
Are there any guys committed to other programs that OSU might get back on; i.e., one could only hope that Manningham has a last minutre change of heart. But waht about any more realistic Ohio guys that OSU might get back on?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:34:34 PM)
oogatz asked about any other Ohio guys we might still be in on that have committed to other schools and I don't believe there are any of those guys out there. Forget about Manningham, he's been gone to the school up north for some time now. I wish I could say Tyrell Sutton or Javon Ringer is in or plans now but I can not. We need to close on Lawrence Wilson and that will be a real positive for this class. Nothing going on with Brandon Harrison or Chris Rowell or even AMW that I'm aware of.

madman (Dec 23, 2004 2:35:20 PM)
Gary, the link for the latest on Ashley isn't working. Can you give us a run down on what it says about Penn State?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:35:21 PM)
I ran into that same loop as you did madman on the Ashley link...sorry.

spbuck (Dec 23, 2004 2:37:36 PM)
Will Marcel Frost become a force at TE for us in 2005?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:37:37 PM)
Hi spbuck...In Frost's highlight video from his senior year at Brush, he was pretty impressive on both sides of the ball. After the spring game, I really thought he would be a future impact player on the defensive line for the Buckeyes but he obviously wasn't healthy at all this year and I'm not certain where he'll play next season. I would guess tight end and that would be a good thing. He's a great athlete. He was a good hoop player in high school also.

scribeohio (Dec 23, 2004 2:40:58 PM)
Gary, who is your fav interview/character kid this year?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:40:58 PM)
Great question top interviewee this year is Boone hands down but right below him are Hartline, Bemoll, McCoy and Worthington. Some guys are just naturals. I won't say who the worst interviewees are because that's not fair to them but some have it and some don't.

buck35 (Dec 23, 2004 2:43:29 PM)
ESPN has Tenn leading for McCoy and doesn't have OSU in Gwaltneys top four.

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:43:29 PM)
I disagree about McCoy and about Gwaltney. Gwaltney only has four schools unless you count Central Florida. I think OSU is Gwaltney's second choice after USC and from conversations with McCoy and a few other recruits, I think he's a Buckeye. There's way too much positives going on with OSU compared to Tennessee who he really does like as well.

scribeohio (Dec 23, 2004 2:44:04 PM)
Is Youngstown Liberty an up/coming FB power?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:44:04 PM)
No offense ... but no!

buck35 (Dec 23, 2004 2:46:05 PM)
Does Marcel have three years left?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:46:05 PM)
Yes but I'm guessing that even he will able to apply for a medical redshirt and a 6th year when he runs out of eligibility. He redshirted last year and he's been injured this entire season.

scribeohio (Dec 23, 2004 2:48:49 PM)
What HS game did you like the most this yr?

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:48:49 PM)
I thought Hoban and St. Vincent-St. Mary-St. James was a very exciting game that Hoban came back from the dead to win behind Sutton's great effort. I can't think of any other off the top of my head but I'm sure I'll think of something later.

GaryHousteau (Dec 23, 2004 2:50:34 PM)
Thanks to everyone for chatting with me on my first chat on my own. Kirk had to help me out of jam in the beginning but after that everything went smoothly from what I can tell. Have a great Christmas and a wonderful New Year. God bless you all and go Bucks!
