Bill, Do you know what the latest is on the NCAA investigation and do you expect sanctions? Right or wrong, I think ESPin's bashing Wednesday night has caused some concern. Thanks.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:09:00 PM)
I expect sanctions to come in the basketball program. Football, I think is on the cusp, it depends if anything comes out involving any other players and if anything was initiated by the coaching staff. Hopefully that is not the case.
38-37 (Jan 3, 2005 3:06:32 PM)
hello BIll Do you root for Big Ten in bowl games and MI also I must admit I was mixed on there loss for the big Ten but lost no sleep.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:09:21 PM)
Regarding the Big Ten ...
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:10:06 PM)
I root for all Big Ten teams in bowl games, except for Michigan. I know some people don't understand that. The reason I don't root for Michigan is we recruit directly against them, Anything bad that happens to them is good for Ohio State.
reddog1313 (Jan 3, 2005 3:10:16 PM)
Hi Bill: Do you forsee any assistant coaching changes at Ohio State?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:10:35 PM)
Only if a couple of assistants try to go to the pro ranks. I don't see any forced turnover.
jrd150 (Jan 3, 2005 3:10:42 PM)
compare gwaltney and clarrett.... gwaltney looks pretty nice to me although his competition looks weak
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:10:53 PM)
No comparison, Clarett is 10 times better.
TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:11:01 PM)
What is your best guess on who starts at QB vs. Miami and then vs. Texas?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:12:18 PM)
If there are no more penalty for Troy Smith, he'll be the starting QB. A lot depends on when the NCAA makes a decision on his case. It would not shock me if both QBs played an equal number of snaps against Miami, but I guarantee you Troy will be the starter against Texas if he is eligible.
buck35 (Jan 3, 2005 3:12:34 PM)
Is there any chance Wells and Gwaltney are buying this "thunder and lightning" bit? Or is this just wishful thinking.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:12:46 PM)
I don't see any way they will both play at the same school.
epsteinosu (Jan 3, 2005 3:12:58 PM)
Hello coach, What are your thoughts as far as probation for the football program and how would this affect the remaining recruits?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:13:54 PM)
Ohio State has never had a major football sanction in its history. Only if a severe penalty would come down from the NCAA would it affect recruiting. Our tradition and success, along with hard work from the coaching staff, are the keys to recruiting.
bucklover (Jan 3, 2005 3:14:07 PM)
Coach-in your opinio who fills out this class. My guess is Wilson, McCoy, Lenix, McCarthy, and Wells finish a nice class. I think Daniels may end up here too.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:14:48 PM)
I think there's a good shot at all of those guys, with maybe the exception of McCoy.
buckmark (Jan 3, 2005 3:15:01 PM)
Bill, Some new names are surfacing for visits this month. Looks like the staff is working hard to find some diamonds in the rough. How do you see the kid from Mooney (McCarthy) and are there others you are hearing of?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:15:34 PM)
If guys are just now starting to surface, they're not good enough. Recruiting is at least a yearlong process. Everybody knew about the great ones a year ago.
bucknut13 (Jan 3, 2005 3:15:49 PM)
Bill - How does the staff view Devin Jordan? Do you think he can be a player here? Thanks.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:16:24 PM)
Devin Jordan is a possession type of receiver. He has good hands and runs good routes. He lacks the speed to be a great one. And he needs to stay healthy.
buckmark (Jan 3, 2005 3:16:44 PM)
Coach, have you heard anyhting about Fred Davis and his situation at USC?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:17:31 PM)
Obviously, Fred Davis is having his problems. He missed the plane to the bowl game. And he had academic problems in high school as well as attendance problems. I would say his future at Southern Cal is somewhat in jeopardy.
Mike68 (Jan 3, 2005 3:17:40 PM)
Bill- Give us your thoughts on the Alamo Bowl performance by the Bucks
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:18:07 PM)
Outstanding in all aspects -- coaching, offense, defense, special teams. Great overall victory. Two outstanding games back to back.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:18:51 PM)
One second, please ...
cderekw (Jan 3, 2005 3:19:13 PM)
Bill, Justin had a good game last week, with that being said, IMO this offense is much more dangerous with Smith in there. Both QB's have shown they can play. Your thoughts Thanks.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:21:06 PM)
I think Justin did a good job of executing the offense. He made no key mistakes and had a steady, gutty performance. Troy Smith is the play maker, though. The entire offensive production changed during the season when Troy Smith and Teddy Ginn got more involved.
goTedgo (Jan 3, 2005 3:21:38 PM)
why did we offer this McCarthy kid?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:22:32 PM)
He's a good student and a good kid. I'm concerned that we're not recruiting enough great players for the number of spots we have left.
Guest (Jan 3, 2005 3:22:52 PM)
compare haw and pittman and who do u expect do be the starting tailback next year? will either wells or gwaltney if the sign be able to start of the bat?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:24:34 PM)
It's tough to judge Haw at this point because he has not been in collegiate competition. Pittman is obviously talented, but probably limited physically to no more than 20 carries a game. Wells could give both players competition early. Gwaltney will need a little bit of time to develop, I believe.
buckmark (Jan 3, 2005 3:24:51 PM)
Coach, What effect does Pettrey waiting until spring to enroll have on the numbers for this year's class?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:25:35 PM)
With graduation and still the possibility of a couple of guys checking out the NFL draft, the numbers could get close to the full class of 25. This gives them a little bit of flexibility.
goTedgo (Jan 3, 2005 3:25:43 PM)
Bill, is Tressel still calling the plays or not? I can't see him being this creative.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:26:31 PM)
I can guarantee you he is still calling the plays. A lot of the plays were already in the offense. The only difference was the slot alignment of Ginn and the calling of the QB plays from the offense.
stone cold buckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:26:42 PM)
Does Tress and Geiger know what 's going on and they are playing a deaf ear to it.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:27:17 PM)
Nobody really knows except Tressel and Geiger.
alabama buckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:27:39 PM)
Coach - I seem to recall in your tenure at TOSU that you were actively recruited by Coach Phil Fulmer for a job with Tennessee. First off is that accurate? Secondly knowing what you know about how UT and the SEC recruits how could you have fit into that environment?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:28:31 PM)
Yes, I was offered a job by Phil Fulmer and actually put on a seminar for recruiting for his coaching staff. One of the reasons I didn't take the job was that SEC recruiting is quite a bit different. But primarily was my passion for Ohio State.
Jim C (Jan 3, 2005 3:28:40 PM)
Coach Conley, Any thoughts about returning to the coahing ranks?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:29:28 PM)
Once you've been a coach as long as I have, that's always an option. One of the biggest deterrents is that I really like Columbus, Ohio, and at this point I don't see myself taking a job anywhere.
goTedgo (Jan 3, 2005 3:29:38 PM)
predictions for next year? looks like a dominating D and an explosive O... only thing missing is Nuuuuuge
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:30:22 PM)
Yeah, I strongly believe the Buckeyes will be a top 10 team starting the season off. The only thing that will keep them from being one of the top five teams in the country is exactly that -- the loss of the three specialists (punter, kicker and long snapper).
stone cold buckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:30:33 PM)
What are your thoughts on ESPN and the constant attacks on TOSU? What happened to piss them off so much to want to take us down?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:31:33 PM)
First of all, I thought it was outrageous the way they ignored the game. That wasn't fair to either team or their fans. Secondly, I am sure the producers who tell them what to talk about were trying to keep the TV audience since the game was such a blowout.
buckmark (Jan 3, 2005 3:31:45 PM)
You said that sanctions will depend on if the coaches had a hand in the infractions. Knowing the coaches as you do, do you think this is a possibility?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:32:02 PM)
It would really surprise me if there was any direct involvement by any of the coaches.
stone cold buckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:32:08 PM)
Why do you doubt McCoy not coming here??
bucklover (Jan 3, 2005 3:32:10 PM)
Coach-in you opinion McCoy goes to UT?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:32:15 PM)
First of all, he
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:33:11 PM)
First of all, he's an out of state player from an area we normally don't get a lot of players (D.C.). Secondly, he's closer to the southeast and Big East and ACC conferences. Thirdly, recruiting still has about 5 weeks to go.
TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:33:23 PM)
What's up with EJ Underwood?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:34:01 PM)
Unfortunately, E.J. has had his problems off the field ever since he's been at Ohio State. I would say his longevity with the Buckeyes may be in question.
alabama buckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:34:17 PM)
Coach - Has OU (ohio univiersity) filled out their staff and is that something you would consider?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:34:32 PM)
Frank Solich, the former Nebraska coach, got that job.
38-37 (Jan 3, 2005 3:35:00 PM)
From the 2001 and the last 2 games win over MI and comeback lose to usc what do you think of this team for next year
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:36:12 PM)
I think a bright future for next season with all the returners. The following year will be tough replacing the LBs on defense and a couple of the OL. Smith and Ginn should carry them through the next 2 seasons, as long as recruiting goes well the next 2 years.
soflabuck (Jan 3, 2005 3:36:18 PM)
Will Roy Hall eventually move to TE ?? what are his issues with the move?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:36:52 PM)
Roy Hall was asked early in his career to play TE and he simply had no desire to do that. His best position would be a flex TE.
treglee (Jan 3, 2005 3:37:22 PM)
coach -do you feel that Wells would be a big step up in our backfield compared to Pittman and Haw if he were to commit to this class and what's are chances of getting him? Also the same for Gwaltney
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:38:11 PM)
I think Wells would definitely be a step up for any football team. He's still not a big back, but he's a very talented athlete. At this point, Wells and Gwaltney are the only 2 great ones left on the board.
buck35 (Jan 3, 2005 3:38:26 PM)
Why wouldnt Roy Hall switch to TE? Cant they sell him on a Winslow type guy? That would even bring more speed to the field.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:38:53 PM)
I think that would be a smart move by the staff to try and do that, especially with the loss of Irizarry, who was a big play maker at TE.
alabama buckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:39:04 PM)
Coach - How can a guy with the success with QBs and offenses like Norm Chow not get a head coaching job?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:39:48 PM)
I think he is going to be extremely selective. He's the highest paid coordinator in the country, making more money than many head coaches. At his age, job security isn't bad.
goTedgo (Jan 3, 2005 3:39:58 PM)
Coach, whatever happened with the Adam Myers White situation... seemed like he could have been a great player for the Bucks
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:40:48 PM)
I think he would be a good player, not sure a great player. The coaching staff just decided he wouldn't fit in.
alabama buckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:40:58 PM)
Coach - Based on your experience with Coach Tressel if Coach Bollman leaves for the NFL does he hire from within or go outside for an OC?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:41:19 PM)
It really doesn't matter, because Jim Tressel is going to call the plays anyway and really is the OC.
Damo13 (Jan 3, 2005 3:41:28 PM)
Having coached with both Cooper and Tressel, what is their difference in their approach to big games such as bowl games and Michigan?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:42:49 PM)
I think both coaches did a very good job of trying to keep the game in focus and not allowing outside influences to influence game preparation. JT was more of an offensive mind and continually does a good job of analyzing the weaknesses of the opposing defense.
TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:42:56 PM)
What are your opinions on OSU vs. Texas?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:44:11 PM)
I think it will be a great game because both teams have a lot of players coming back. I think Ohio State will do a better job than Michigan of letting Vincent Young run the football. With the game being at home in 2005, that's an additional advantage for the Buckeyes. I would pick Ohio State at this point by 10 points.
buck35 (Jan 3, 2005 3:44:21 PM)
What do you think fo the Army AA game. Seems like these kids are getting too much attention before they do anything.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:45:40 PM)
The Army all-star game is bursting at the seams. It's becoming a good showcase for talent. But the committing to colleges during the game is a little too Hollywood style.
Mike68 (Jan 3, 2005 3:45:51 PM)
Coach- Why didn't we extend an offer to Adam Graessele who is now at Pitt. He's looking like he could have been a heck of a punter for us.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:46:34 PM)
The timing in relation to the number of scholarships available at that point and who we had. We had Groom and B.J. Sander at the time. Not many schools can afford to have 3 scholarships tied up in punters.
alabama buckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:46:48 PM)
Coach - Who is the next Ex Buckeye who gets into coaching for us? Eddie, O Pace? Is it too late for Spielman?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:47:38 PM)
I think Spielman is the new coach of the Destroyers Arena League team. In my opinion, Mike Vrabel will be a great coach once his pro career is over. He has that desire.
buckmark (Jan 3, 2005 3:47:58 PM)
Who do you see stepping up at CB next year? We need somone to replace Dustin, but it doesn't seem like anyone (besides Youbouty) showed well this year. We had real problems during the games Fox was hurt.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:49:16 PM)
The next best corner is also a starting WR. But Ted Ginn, in my opinion, needs to stay on offense. He needs to touch the ball as many times as he can. Now you're looking at Brandon Underwood and possibly, if the staff feels a move could be made to corner, with Everett or Whitner.
alabama buckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:49:25 PM)
Coach - Is it a practice for coaches to introduce players to high level boosters?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:49:30 PM)
No, not at all.
OrlandoBuckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:49:48 PM)
Bill, Can you talk about Vernon Gohlston, Alex Barrow, Nader Abdallah, Sian Cotton and Brandon Maupin and what kind of players you think they will be at OSU. Alos will Marcel Frost be a TE or DE next season?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:51:05 PM)
I think Sian Cotton, of the guys mentioned, will be more of an impact player. Of the ends, probably Gholston. Abdallah will be very good with a year of experience. The same goes for Barrow. Marcel Frost is the best athlete of all, but has issues he has to deal with before the staff will put their trust in him.
alabama buckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:51:16 PM)
Coach - What has happened to Michigan's Defense? They use to hang their hats on a solid defense who was nearly impossible to score on.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:51:54 PM)
I think they're not as deep at the interior D-line and the LB spots. I like their secondary a lot.
Guest (Jan 3, 2005 3:52:55 PM)
How does Rico McCoy's playing style compare to that of Marcus Freeman?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:53:30 PM)
They are very similar. They can both run and be effective equally versus the pass and the run.
buckmark (Jan 3, 2005 3:53:37 PM)
How many spots do you think we have left and is this class close to a top five?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:54:46 PM)
It would not surprise me if there are still 8 to 10 spots to be filled. It is way too early to tell if it's a top-five class. They'll have to have a strong finish to do that. Michigan had a strong December. They are up to 19 commitments now and are slightly ahead of us.
38-37 (Jan 3, 2005 3:55:02 PM)
When this incident happend to troy do the players jump on him for it. I know the player know about what not to do, but how often doest the coaches talk about it.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:56:09 PM)
The coaches talk about it continually. I'm sure the coaches and the players are disappointed because they are continually not only talked to about boosters but sign NCAA forms that they understand the rules.
buckmark (Jan 3, 2005 3:56:23 PM)
How many "great" players would need to be in a class in order to call the class "great"?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:56:38 PM)
About one-third. The rest need to be very good.
alabama buckeye (Jan 3, 2005 3:56:53 PM)
Coach - Do you try to stay "inside" with recruiting still since it was your life for the last two decades?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:57:06 PM)
It's still a strong hobby.
KansasBuck (Jan 3, 2005 3:57:16 PM)
Coach, of all the potential recruits OSU is in on, who would you most like to see commit to the buckeyes?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:58:39 PM)
Obviously, one or both of the two RBs. It would be great to get the DB Carlos Thomas from Ga., who is supposed to be visiting this weekend. If Freddie Lenix decides to be a Buckeye, that would also be a plus. He is also supposed to visit this weekend. It is also equally as important to keep the OOS players who are committed in the fold.
murfinatl (Jan 3, 2005 3:58:52 PM)
Bill - how effective is a recruiting visit in January when there are no practices or games to showcase, and what is the highlight of the visits during these next couple weekends?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 3:59:57 PM)
This weekend coming up is normally one of the best weekends to have recruits on campus. All of the students are back on campus and all of the players are still on a high from winning the Alamo Bowl. The coaches like it better also because it's not as hectic of a weekend with bowl practice and preparation going on.
crazynuts (Jan 3, 2005 4:00:05 PM)
Happy New Year Bill, I am still concerned with OSU's lack of depth at the tight end position. A great TE is such a weapon in both passing and running the ball. Is my concern unfounded??
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 4:00:35 PM)
I think that is a major concern. I agree with you 100 percent. The Buckeyes need at least one big play making tight end, two if possible.

I expect Todd Boeckman to provide outstanding competition.

Coach Tressel has an in home visit with Rico McCoy tonight. What does he say to sell him the program?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 4:02:14 PM)
The most obvious thing to say is the chance to play early. He also will try and sell him the great Ohio State tradition at that position. And, as Woody would do, work hard on selling the family on the Buckeyes.
skeelo (Jan 3, 2005 4:03:01 PM)
who do you see as our starting offensive line next year? do you see sims as a guard?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 4:05:15 PM)
I think the lineup you saw in the Alamo Bowl will be the lineup you see against Miami (Ohio) with Datish or Rehring or Boone or Mitchum filling in one of the vacant spots with the possibility of moving Sims to guard.
Guest (Jan 3, 2005 4:06:08 PM)
Do you see Ginn as the starting cornerback opposite Youboty or will it be someone else next year? With EJ in question where does that leave his brother as har as staying?
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 4:07:21 PM)
That should not affect Brandon's situation. It's impossible for Ted Ginn to play an entire game both ways. There has been no Superman since Clark Kent.
BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 4:07:32 PM)
Last question, then I've gotta run ...
alabama buckeye (Jan 3, 2005 4:07:45 PM)

BillConley (Jan 3, 2005 4:08:55 PM)
They obviously thought they had Urban Meyer wrapped up. Unfortunately, Notre Dame is no longer looked upon as an elite coaching job. As a matter of fact, it has been more of a graveyard the last decade or so. It will stay that way unless there are some major changes in relation to admission standards.
