"The visit went very well," he said. "I was very impressed facilities and the program, but mostly I was impressed with the people. Those are really good people. Coach Tressel and the staff, those are people you could be happy to be around for the next four or five years.
"I was hosted by Todd Boeckman. I spent a good deal of time around Rory Nicol too."
Ohio State made quite an impression on McCarthy, but no decision has been made yet.
"Ohio State is my top choice right now," he said. "I want to take my time and think about this. I don't want to rush into anything. I'm going to be spending the next four or five years wherever I decide, and I want to make sure I make the right choice."
McCarthy still does not have his other visits set up. Next on the list could be Navy.
" I may visit Navy this weekend, but that's not for sure," McCarthy said. "It's just such an honor."
McCarthy says the decision will be his to make.
"(My parents are) going to leave this up to me," he said. "They know I'm the one that's going to have to live with the decision."
One reason McCarthy might have been an unknown in recruiting circles until recently is because he just got his tape out after the state championship game. He had never been to an Ohio State game because they were not recruiting him until recently. He can play many positions but would likely get a shot at defensive back if he chose OSU.
"I played as a receiver last year," he said. "Not at quarterback. I played mostly corner this year on defense."
McCarthy capped off his senior season with a Division IV state title.
"The state championship's something I'm never going to forget," he said. "Over the summer, it was what we worked so very hard for."
