Looks like Jared Carter would be a nice addition.
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:03:46 PM)
Everything i've heard about Carter so far tells me he's a guy that would take a couple of years to develop into a meaningful contributor.... but hold that thought until we get started ;)
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:05:05 PM)
ill give everyone til 3:05, for the late arrivers... then ill turn on the moderation and we'll begin
jeff (Jan 13, 2005 3:08:18 PM)
Without the touch fouls on dials, the buckeyes probably beat wisconsin, I see them beating many teams at home just because dials will not get called for those ticky-tacks! Do you think with dials back next year, that we can win the big 10 outright?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:08:50 PM)
okay, we will go ahead and begin
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:08:56 PM)
so everyone could submit your questions
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:10:11 PM)
Jeff, I don't know if they beat them or not, but certainly it's a much different ball game. I do think Ohio State is going to knock a few of the heavyweights off at home this year (I.E., Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan State). Next year, if Butler develops his ball handling a little better, and they find depth for TD, I think Ohio State can be a contender in the Big Ten
Guest (Jan 13, 2005 3:10:32 PM)
Kyle: How would you rate the top 10 players in Ohio right now? And what players are really standing out this season
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:10:59 PM)
Right now, if you're talking the class of 2006, I would call it something like....
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:12:50 PM)
Daequan Cook, David Lighty, James Dews, Raymar Morgan, Richard Semrau, Josh Chichester, Adrian Graves, Rickey Jackson, Nate Davis, and Jamar Howard
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:13:15 PM)
In 2007, Mayo, Walker, Lauderdale, and maybe even Dante Jackson or Nate Myles could be considered top 10 overall players
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:13:26 PM)
Lauderdale is having an excellent season, as is Cook.
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:13:38 PM)
Dews looks good, and Rickey Jackson is really elevating his game
drderm (Jan 13, 2005 3:13:53 PM)
Kyle or anyone, I read the posts about Redlands and am happy that he is doing well, but I thought Konate was on that team as well and would think a skilled 7 footer should be putting some numbers up to be reported.
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:14:22 PM)
Konate is in fact on that team, and he's doing well. The problem with Konate is that he's missed several games with a knee injury...
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:15:05 PM)
He's about 6-9 245. I think the talent is unquestionable by any scout you talk to... its grades and his makeup that is to be questioned
OTC (Jan 13, 2005 3:15:18 PM)
How do you think Butler is developing and will he be ready at pg next year to lead the team?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:15:43 PM)
Everything depends on confidence with Butler. I still like him as a PG, and I think he's a true PG, despite what people may see with his handle...
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:16:44 PM)
His handle needs to improve, no question. Right now I don't see the confident player I saw in HS. His second year may change that. I have not seen his range this year, and I believe that's because of confidence too. If he improves his ball handling in the off season, and returns to the penetrating/dishing player I remember, his shots will open up and start falling as well... I think he will be ready
DialedIn (Jan 13, 2005 3:16:52 PM)
Seems like Harris has been sitting a lot lately, any reason?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:17:54 PM)
Mostly his defense. Sylvester has really been bearing down lately, and Harris simply has not. Everyone Harris tries to stop, especially posting up, he gets burnt badly. If Ivan would do better on defense, and play more consistently in the paint offensively, he will get all the minutes in the world
bballbucks (Jan 13, 2005 3:18:02 PM)
whats wrong with his makeup, is he a problem?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:18:55 PM)
Ousmane just needs to be mentally tougher. He can't let injuries stop him, and has to stay focused and determined. I think he's doing well with getting his grades in order... if he stays healthy, look out
DialedIn (Jan 13, 2005 3:19:14 PM)
Has Matta been out recruiting lately? Or is he working more on the current game and going to do the heavy recruiting later?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:21:01 PM)
They are tireless recruiters, as in he and his entire staff. They have very much been out recruiting when rules permit, and time permits. They have been sending out countless amounts of mail to 2006 and 2007 recruits, and continuing to call high school coaches relentlessly. I spoke to one high school coach of a 2006 recruit last week that told me Matta gets 40 miles to the gallon whereas many coaches get about 20... in both coaching and recruiting
ODUbuck75 (Jan 13, 2005 3:21:06 PM)
Speaking of sitting, what's up with Twig not getting to see the floor, any ideas or sources that tell you what's going on there?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:22:32 PM)
This is the one mystery I have not been able to crack. I've heard there could possibly be an injury we don't know about, or the ankle injury was worse than we thought, but that's completely speculation. I do not believe Marinchick is that far ahead of Terwilliger from everything i've heard dating back to practices in the early part of the season, which leads me to believe there's either an injury or Matt is in the doghouse for something
MiniBUs (Jan 13, 2005 3:22:41 PM)
What is the latest on Dews? Is O-State in his top 3??
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:24:10 PM)
Last time I saw Dews formulate a list, he did not mention Ohio State. I spoke with Josh Chichester last night for an article i'm doing for both the website and magazine, and I asked how James was doing. When I asked about what schools were recruiting James, he said that most of the same schools and more. I asked if Ohio State was one of them, and he said "yes". Now, whether or not they are proactively going after Dews, I don't know.. but I had heard they were going to start paying him attention as they had not before
Guest (Jan 13, 2005 3:24:20 PM)
Ousmane, from what I heard of him sounds like a beast and very athletic, I hope he is the guy that rounds out this class
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:25:25 PM)
He's certainly an ideal candidate to back up Terence next year. The Buckeyes need a tough center who can withstand the physicality of the Big Ten (laughs at the thought of it being a physical confernence when the Ed Hightowers of the world call Dials for a foul for placing a hand on the hip on a pivot move)
Guest (Jan 13, 2005 3:25:33 PM)
With all of the current focus on Coach Matta, how is the rest of the staff doing with developing the players and coming up with game plans?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:26:54 PM)
The assistants seem to spend a lot more time in the film room than the previous staff did-- and that's not a knock on the previous staff. They spend a lot of time looking at film, and I think it has shown with the way they made Illinois go inside to beat them. Unfortunately, Harris couldn't contain Augustine down low
Schaumbuck (Jan 13, 2005 3:27:33 PM)
Who are some other high school or JC posts that Matta and staff may be looking at? I know of Konate, Kentuckian Jared Carter, Motor City kid Anthony Sparks and there are probably some others I just don't remember at this point but have been spoken of before.
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:28:52 PM)
They looked at Theryn Hudson of Tennessee, but that seems to be a project and I think they decided it wasn't worth it... they also looked at the possibility of getting involved with Theo Davis, who is probably the best center available that won't be in the NBA draft... but there are too many people with a hand on his recruitment
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:29:59 PM)
The questions seem to be caught up for the moment, so I would like to take this time to give a couple of plugs... first for Sylvester Mayes
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:30:27 PM)
He sat out a couple of games with a minor injury, and ever since he returned, the last 5 or 6 games i've heard he has been nothing short of incredible
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:30:52 PM)
I've heard he's now averaging 24 points and 5 assists on the season, and his defensive intensity has stepped up even further
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:31:15 PM)
The kid has range to 30 feet, and has a pure stroke. He's Tony Stockman with a well-rounded game and without the enigmatic inconsistency
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:32:46 PM)
The other thing I did want to bring up, is that i'm hearing good things on Ronald Lewis from practice
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:33:06 PM)
I really think Lewis is going to give Sullinger a good run for his money to start on the wing next season
OTC (Jan 13, 2005 3:33:20 PM)
How is Mullens doing this year as a frosh?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:34:02 PM)
he's doing pretty well. he still has his ups and downs depending on who he plays. I think right now it's a matter of adjusting to the fact everyone is double-teaming him
buckagent (Jan 13, 2005 3:34:30 PM)
Do you know if the team is planning a trip to Europe this summer? The last time they went was 2001.
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:35:47 PM)
I've not heard specifically whether or not they will. I'm not sure what Matta's mindset is on that. Incidently, I heard Bob Huggins a few nights back who is very outspoken on this idea. He doesn't like the fact some teams will travel across the border to Canada just to get 10 days extra practice or any sort of trip out of the country, for that matter
OTC (Jan 13, 2005 3:36:04 PM)
Butler and Foster seemed to get most of the playing time down the stretch last game, are we going to see those 2 continue to get a lot of the important playing time or was that just a one game thing?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:36:33 PM)
That's a very good observation. I think, at least for right now, that was a particular choice of preference for that one game...
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:36:51 PM)
if you will notice, Ohio State made their run after they began to pick up a 3/4 court press...
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:37:37 PM)
that was the reasoning I believe for using Butler and Foster because they could pick their man up and not allow Wisconsin to have easy passing lanes or entry passes to the post players, which had been happening with ease the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half
Hewlett Harbor Buck (Jan 13, 2005 3:38:19 PM)
How come Salley hasn't joined the hoops team yet?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:38:54 PM)
Salley made the decision last season to end his basketball aspirations. He has a good shot of being a first day selection for the NFL draft, so he is focusing on football now
DialedIn (Jan 13, 2005 3:39:49 PM)
Is Matta and Tressel going to let Lawrence Wilson play some basketball when he arrives on campus?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:41:18 PM)
I believe Tressel has given the OK if it's fine with Matta. I doubt very seriously Matta will have any problems with it should Lawrence want to play both sports, but Wilson will be nothing more than a practice body. I do not think he's D-I caliber in basketball, personally, and even if he is, he's not good enough to step in during January and make up enough ground to play in any meaningful action
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:43:19 PM)
Have we really gone this far into the chat without the proverbial questions about the Cook/Conley/Oden trio?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:43:38 PM)
We're all caught up on questions, thus far if anyone has more
OTC (Jan 13, 2005 3:43:56 PM)
Cook/Conely/Oden what are your thoughts?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:46:35 PM)
Right now I think it's going to be a battle between Ohio State and Wake for Cook and Conley, and I think it's an NBA/Indiana/Ohio State battle for Oden. I think Ohio State's only chances at Oden would be to get Cook and Conley, and hope he wants to join them... otherwise it's probably Indiana or the NBA (although I think Oden could still decide to head down to Wake if Conley and Cook go). Ohio State is in good with Cook and Conley both. I'd call Ohio State a slight leader for Cook, and Wake a slight leader for Conley
Hewlett Harbor Buck (Jan 13, 2005 3:47:04 PM)
Love Matta - love his coaching and when he gets his type of players watch out - but please tell him to wear red or grey ties - my wife asked why he was wearing a blue tie the other day - she said isn't that michigan colors !!!!
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:47:10 PM)
Coach Matta should know better
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:47:40 PM)
He was warned about that very same thing before the Delaware game, and even joked being Delaware (Blue Hens) and the night before thee game, that he shouldn't be wearing Blue ties
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:47:43 PM)
shame on him!
ODUbuck75 (Jan 13, 2005 3:47:56 PM)
What about JaJuan Jones, I saw that the staff is currently not recruiting him, if they are, it isn't very hard. Do you see Matta trying to get him in for at least a visit?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:48:54 PM)
I don't see them getting in on him. I'm not even sure what their thoughts on Jones might be, but there's just so many good 2's and 3's that Ohio State is pursuing right now, I think they have their sights set awfully high on other guys
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:50:06 PM)
I think besides the obvious Lighty, Cook, Conley, Paul Harris, etc, names you hear about... guys like Will Walker, Anjuan Wilderness, Devan Bawinkle, D.J. Augustin, etc. are popping up all over the place
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:50:32 PM)
This staff is really recruiting nationally right now, something that O'Brien didn't do very much of for the most part
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:51:23 PM)
And of course, that's without mentioning the Utah high school player (Brayden Bell) they signed in November. Anyone care to guess when the last time Ohio State signed someone from Utah? Laugh.
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:52:05 PM)
(That was a rhetorical question, I sure wouldn't know the answer)
OTC (Jan 13, 2005 3:52:34 PM)
How is Bell doing this year?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:53:30 PM)
Bell is doing very well. He's averaging around 22 to 24 points a game, last I knew he was averaging eight rebounds a game, and i've heard repeatedly from scouts that he has really stepped up his game and been more aggressive this year....
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:53:57 PM)
I have heard rumblings the staff is targeting him to possibly step in and start at the PF position next year if he can hold his own immediately
buckagent (Jan 13, 2005 3:54:21 PM)
Do you think Coach Matta might try to get involved in getting more students on board? Interesting article on Terry Hoeppner today saying he was going after next years recruits and then he was going to recruit the students.
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:55:24 PM)
I think that is something you may see, but on the other hand, just the mere improvements in the basketball program will bring back the students I think. With Geiger retiring, if there's ever a time to have a shot at restructuring the seating arrangements, this may be it
osub4me (Jan 13, 2005 3:55:38 PM)
they seem to like big guys that are better at stepping out, than with their back to the basket. also slashing type sg's as pure shooters, correct ? is this the way matta has always done it?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:56:50 PM)
Their choice of preference is definitely to have 4-out/1-in so in that regards, they want their PF's to be able to step out and shoot. But, that being said... a) they want guys to be able to crash the boards and have the ability to post up consistently, and b) they do want their shooters to have the threat of driving
osub4me (Jan 13, 2005 3:57:41 PM)
isnt mayes a better driver than shooter?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:58:11 PM)
Mayes is very slick with the ball, but shooting is his biggest strength first and foremost. He's a pure shooter with unlimited range.
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 3:59:57 PM)
I think you're going to see some healthy competition next year at certain positions (the wing with Lewis and Sullinger.... the PF with Harris, Sylvester, and Bell)... I really like where next year's team is headed
warren2009 (Jan 13, 2005 4:00:20 PM)
Do all Mario Manningham would come to Ohio Stae if they recruited him in basketball too
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 4:00:42 PM)
I think MM is pretty adamant about going to Michigan. I think he's going football all the way anyhow
osub4me (Jan 13, 2005 4:01:05 PM)
with bell being quite the shooter from outside the key, will they still be able to post him up with success?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 4:02:07 PM)
He worked on it this fall, and he's doing it more during his senior season from what I hear, so I would have to imagine they will be able to. I know one of the most impressive things about Bell from what some of the OSU players said of him in their pick-up games was that he was very crafty down low playing against Terence
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 4:03:15 PM)
I will take a couple more questions if anyone has any more?
osub4me (Jan 13, 2005 4:03:23 PM)
ala kevin mchale type?
Kyle S Lamb (Jan 13, 2005 4:03:50 PM)
Yes, thats probably a decent analogy. He has this baby hook he uses a lot, and I hear he's good with the left hand as well.
