The Columbus Chapter of The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame is having its 44th annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet on Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Buckeye Hall of Fame Café. Awards will be given to top high school and college scholar-athletes in the Central Ohio Area. The top high school scholar-athletes will be awarded with the John H. McConnell Scholarships. Also, 1955 Heisman Award recipient Howard "Hopalong" Cassady will be honored with the Ohio Gold Award, the highest honor given by the organization for his contributions to amateur athletics. Recent recipients include Chris Spielman, Jim Tressel and Andy Geiger.

Ohio State and the NFF and College Hall of Fame have become synonymous in recent years. OSU has a record 19 National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholarship winners. Recent recipients include Craig Krenzel (2003), Ahmed Plummer (1999), Greg Bellisari (1996), Bobby Hoying (1995) and Joey Galloway (1994). The Buckeyes also have 27 former student-athletes and coaches inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The most recent inductee was Jack Tatum last year.

The NFF and College Hall of Fame is a member-supported non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the future of amateur football at local, state and national levels. The foundation with its chapters annually awards nearly $1 million in scholarships to over 3,000 high school and college student athletes for continuing education.

"It's a wonderful organization and event," said Larry Romanoff, president of the Columbus chapter. "Coach (Woody) Hayes always preached about 'paying forward.' For those who played or love college football, this is a great way to support some of the great young people in our local high school and college community. The Foundation and it scholarships help mold the leaders of tomorrow through education and football."

Individual tickets are $60 each and tables of 10 can be purchased at $600. There will be silent and live auction items at the event. Please contact Shannon Pierce at (614) 442-4615 for more information.
