Hi everyone...like the password today says this is my first time all alone doing the chat. Kirk is hanging around in case I run into any difficulties, but I'll do my best to make this a smooth running chat today. With LOI day just six days away, I'm guessing that I know what a lot of the questions will be about. So with that said...fire away when you have questions and we will go from there. Smile!

10-4 good buddy...
TransexualTrousers (Jan 27, 2005 1:06:59 PM)
lets talk walter ashley, the usc website said its down to penn state and usc, say it ain't so
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 1:06:59 PM)
Hi transexual...I'm a little concerned with the name there but welcome anyway. Who do you believe with Ashley. I know Steve has talked to Ashley on a few occasions...I have not spoken to him. I was told by someone who knows that the staff is comfortable with where they are with him. It could be a coin flip on signing day. I've heard reasons why he wouldn't go to USC but again I can only speculate. I think we are in it until signing day but I have nothing more to offer.
edbuck51 (Jan 27, 2005 1:10:15 PM)
Hi Gary. Was San Antonio everything you had hoped for? Did you think things were well run, and you could evaluate players, or did you think it was more of a meet and greet? Did you like the Riverwalk?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 1:10:15 PM)
Hi edbuck...San Antonio was great thanks for asking. I didn't see much of it. I was trying to find out everything that happened in the week before I got there, as soon as I got there. The Riverwalk was great what little I saw of it and the Alamo looked nice as I drove by it a couple of times in the taxi. The combine left more than a little to be desired. Too many kids and not enough opportunities for evaluation. Mike Hartline told me that he thought it was special that he would be at the combine until he saw about 70 or 80 other quarterbacks there. He didn't feel very elite or special. I'm glad I got the opportunity just to have my own perspective.
redondo (Jan 27, 2005 1:13:51 PM)
Hi Gary - How many "winks" in the direction of Wilson? thank you.
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 1:13:51 PM)
Hi redondo...I just checked before the chat begin to see where we stand with Wilson and I feel that there's a 66.67 chance that Wilson goes to OSU over ND. Say for instance there are three key people making the decision, hypothetically, and two of the three are in your favor. That would give you a 66% chance in your favor. My gut, and it's getting a little smaller - I've been on a diet since the New Year, says OSU. Last time my bigger gut said ND before he made his final choice and it was right. So we shall see. No winks however.
rbuck (Jan 27, 2005 1:18:32 PM)
It is really frustrating that a kid like Gwaltney is just playing with either tOSU or USC, he knows where he is going, but talks like it's really up in the air. I do not have a good feeling on this one, I'm sure you'll be asked what you think will happen. So here is one of many.
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 1:18:32 PM)
Gwaltney told me in San Antonio, I had a nice one-on-one with him and no one else was around, that he already knew what school he was going to. So go figure. He's definitely playing with someone. USC people seem to think, or even know, that he is going there. I was told by a very credible person that Gwaltney told him not to worry that he was going to OSU. I will stand by that until he proves me wrong with that. But that source is as good as any other source out there. What can I say. And Gwaltney made some OSU references when he was posing for our little photo shoot. But after McCoy dissed us...anything and everything is possible at this stage of the game. I think playing opportunity and distance favor OSU in a big way. But I won't be surprised if it's USC at all.
fotownbuckeye (Jan 27, 2005 1:22:46 PM)
46%.....what can we read into that? And is it just me or is the JG soap opera starting to get a little old...maybe its just me being tired of reading all lthe negativity on the boards.
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 1:22:46 PM)
Hi fotownbuckeye...that pharase caught my attention as well. Here's what I think. OSU gets the other 54%. He told me that it's between OSU and USC in San Antonio and WVa. was out of it. Maybe he is actually being honest... well maybe not. I think he knows where he is going and he's playing the game. I will say this....parents who were down there told me that his parents or his people were not visibly happy with the distance factor if he does go to USC , so maybe that will play an ultimate factor in his decision. Gwaltney was very impressed with the game-day atmosphere at OSU when he was here for his official...so again...we shall see sooner rather than later.
djbuck (Jan 27, 2005 1:27:46 PM)
without putting percentages on Gwaltney, Ashley, Wilson, Robiskie and Washington, I believe we get all of them. I have seen no evidence to the contrairy. Would you agree and what do you think of us getting all of them
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 1:27:46 PM)
Hi djbuck...I love your thinking and the fan in me is right there with you. But...Right now... I feel really good about Washington and Robiskie, I'm feeling comfortable with Wilson, not quite as comfortable about Ashley but comfortable with our chances, and I'm praying about Gwaltney. Why in the world would we not recruit another big back, or any back for that matter, if we didn't feel good about Gwaltney. Maybe my source in San Antonio was actually told the truth. OSU was Gwaltney's top priority this recruiting at RB, him and Wells...that I know. Maybe we just got lucky and he thinks he can be another Reecie as far as coming in and being a star as a freshman. If he does become a Buckeye...I'll tell you how he accidentally gave it away to me after signing day.
Palmer (Jan 27, 2005 1:32:08 PM)
Gary, Ray Small of Glenville says that he is looking at OSU and USC for next year. Do you think that we could actually lose a Glenville guy like that?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 1:32:08 PM)
Hi Palmer...I would no in the end we will not lose a player like that. Right now I would say that no matter what happens over the next year, Rose and Small will be a Buckeye...Daven Jones (academics??) needs to become a Buckeye...and Bryant Browning could very well be a Buckeye as well. That's the way I'll handicap this. Keep in my who I am a very close friend with, on a personal basis. Ginn Sr. told me all along that Lenix would be a Buckeye and Curtis Smith would have if he had the grades. I don't even worry about Glenville kids as long as they have the grades. They are a feeder program. Smile!
Mr. February (Jan 27, 2005 1:37:43 PM)
Gary, you've seen Brian Robiskie play. What receiver or receivers would you compare him to?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 1:37:43 PM)
Hi Mr. February...does that mean you come up big on signing day or Valentines day???? Yes I've seen Robiskie play. He's very easy on the eyes first and foremost. He's young, just turned 17 in December. And he's a smooth strider who goes up after the ball in the air. I really can't say he reminds me of anyone in particular but wearing number 80 he sure looks like Jerry Rice. I really liked this kid since I saw him and I'm glad we got back to him for whatever reason. I got a nice feeling from him talking to him the other day. He's like OSU from the outset.
Guest (Jan 27, 2005 1:43:28 PM)
Gary, which players out of the junior class are you most looking forward to watching this fall?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 1:43:28 PM)
Hi stemmshady...he asked which players am I most looking forward to watching this fall? Chris Wells...no brainer. I'm starting to like Tony Elzy from Warren JFK a whole lot...he's a warren kid that is not into the Michigan thing (OSU or ND right now)...Mike Hartline...Carter from Copley...Glenville...Tallmadge has some exciting kids...Smith from Howland...Jerome Jones from Ursuline...just to name a few.
djbuck (Jan 27, 2005 1:47:20 PM)
Who do speculate will be co-captains on next years team and of all the players who do you see as on and off the field leaders next season
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 1:47:20 PM)
Co-captians for next year would be A.J. Hawk and Bobby Carpenter on defense and mabye Mangold and Simms on offense??? Haven't really thought about that yet. Holmes will still be a junior technically but he will be a leader and I think Schlegel and Salley could be leaders on defense. Kudla could sneak into the captains race as a leader by example and he should definitely be a leader on the denfensive unit. But we're pretty young overall.

Hi Gary, NLOID is next week. Who ends up with us?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 1:50:35 PM)
Bucks4fun asks who ends up with us on NLOID? Well in addition to my stops at GlenOak, St. Ed's and Glenville, I'm hoping to add Chagrins and St. Vincent-St. Mary- St. James to my list as well. And while I'm in the car driving around northeast Ohio, I hope Steve or some of my other guys tell me that we got Ashley and Gwaltney as well. It's been really bad driving around on signing day and getting bad news from other recruits throughout the day, over the past four years or so.
HunterdonBuck (Jan 27, 2005 1:55:24 PM)
Gary, Every USC "insider" is saying Gwaltney is a done deal to the Trojans. Do we have a shot or is this cat out of the bag to SC?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 1:55:24 PM)
Hi HunterdonBuck...call me naive or call me a knucklehead, I've been callled worse before...but I've already said what I've said about Gwaltney and that's all that I know. Call it wishful thinking, call it stupidity, call it any thing you like but I'm keeping the faith until one of my my main source or Gwaltney himself tells me something different. Will I be surprised if he is a Trojan...Nope! But I choose to think otherwise. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
HunterdonBuck (Jan 27, 2005 1:57:15 PM)
Gary, Any thoughts on Thaddeus Gibson for next year? Is he leaning to anyone? OSU interest?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 1:57:15 PM)
About Gibson...I'm going to try to make a detour on signing day to stop by Euclid and visit Gibson if time allows... also Brandon Smith's younger brother goes there. I hope to have a better idea where we stand with him after that. He's certainly been to a couple of Buckeye games so I would imagine he's a little interested...yes!
Guest (Jan 27, 2005 2:01:43 PM)
Gary, how many RB's will we take next year? It looks like Ohio is loaded next year and there are some good OOS players as well.
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:01:43 PM)
OSUfan25 asks about RBs for next year...I'll take Chris Wells and Tony Elzy right now for next year and call it a day. Again Carter from Copley and Miller from Tallmadge had big years last year. Carter transferred to Copley from Hoban...Sutton's backup at one time...and Miller was at Buchtel for a year after he started off with Tallmadge or was in their system. Smith from Howland is a Ray Williams clone and he had a big year as well last season. Yeah I'm giving you a lot of NE Ohio flavor but that's what I know best and that happens to be where a lot of the talent is.
BuckeyeDave (Jan 27, 2005 2:04:20 PM)
My gut tells me that Gwaltney is headed to U$C. Why? Good weather. Girls. One and a half National Championships. And Pete Carroll lyi^^^telling him that he has a shot at significant PT next year.
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:04:20 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...You seem to be in the majority of thinkers in regard to Gwaltney. I'll wish him luck at either school. Nice young man! I congratulated McCoy in San Antonio when he chose Tennessee. I'll take the kids that want to Buckeyes and move on. That's all we can do. We know what they're missing out on if they don't come here but I'd be preaching to the choir on that point.
buck4u (Jan 27, 2005 2:08:30 PM)
What's going on with the Pettrey situation? Conley stated that Skeete would never see the field.
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:08:30 PM)
Hi buck4u...many people seem to have those sentiments about Skeete but he was offered a scholarship to Ohio State, albeit a late offer, and so he has to be somewhere near the caliber of deserving of it I would guess. I just know that we need a decent kicker this year, whoever it will be because we have a team that could/will make a run at the big title again. And we all know how much trouble Nugent had in his fresman year and he turned into an All-American. Sorry don't really know much about the kicking situation right now. Huston would be the most veteran choice among the candidates I would think. There was talk of Pettrey gray shirting at one time but I really haven't kept tabs on that?
coachjenks (Jan 27, 2005 2:13:52 PM)
What is your opinion on kids that wait until signing day to committ. Do you think they already know where they're going but want the added attention? Or do you think they truly need the time to decide. For instance, Jason Gwaltney.
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:13:52 PM)
hi coachjenks...are you a coach?...I think kids need to realize that they could be keeping other kids from getting a scholarship offer by holding out. But kids that take it the distance aren't really concerned about other kids than themselves. I would hope deep down that Gwaltney has told either school but when head coaches are still visiting a week before signing day...who knows what's really going on. Meanwhile...that one offer could be used for another kid that they might have missed out on...might have committed elsewhere. The Kevin Bemoll is an innocent situation gone awry for OSU. I think Bemoll just got cold feet. Now would we have Wilson from Florida if we knew that earlier...I don't know? But he sure wanted to be a Buckeye and he's enrolled in school already. So I hope most if not all kids who wait are really and truly undecided and are not just publicity seekers. I think Gwaltney knows where he's going already and has known for some time, be it USC or OSU. He told me so on tape that he knows where he's going.
Guest (Jan 27, 2005 2:16:59 PM)
Hey Gary, Chris Wells seems to be the unanimous choice for the #1 Ohio prospect. He's one player that I haven't gotten a chance to see. What type of runner is he, is there anyone past or present that his running style reminds you of?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:16:59 PM)
Stemmshady asks about Chris Wells...He's big, fast, powerful, likes contact, he cramps up a lot in the calfs so he needs to work on that some and he does have a little bit of shake to him. He's a natural runnig back although he's a very big guy. It's hard to say he's a young Eddie but I guess I'll say it anyway. If he gets the mentality of an Eddie George to go with what he's already got...look out. Wells is quiet and reserved and unassuming for the most part.
Guest (Jan 27, 2005 2:24:16 PM)
If you had to form a top ten in Ohio right now for next year, who would be in? How many of these guys would choose OSU?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:24:16 PM)
osufan25 aska about a top 10 for next year and I really should defer to Duane who is the expert in this area but I'll take a stab at it. 1) Wells 2) Rob Rose 3) Mike Hartline 4) Nate Davis 5) Anthony Elzy 6) Ray Small 7) Aaron Brown 8) Rob Parris 9) Thaddeus Gibson 10) Javoni Chappel 11) Robbie Parris 12) Ross Homan 13) Jerome Jones 14) Ryan Palmer 15) Jake Ballard 16) Daven Jones.... I have to stop there because as I keep typing more and more guys keep coming to mind. I'm sure I'm skipping some obvious ones but those guys are all in the mix somewhere as well as other guys I've already mentioned today and more.
djbuck (Jan 27, 2005 2:28:00 PM)
Hi Gary - Do you have any information on Zwicks groin injury and how well he is recouperating? Who do you think will be the starter next year at QB and which QB has the greater upside
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:28:01 PM)
Well I have no new information on Zwick's injury. Right now Zwick deserves to be the starter going into the season based upon his performance in the Bowl game and Smith's negative transgression. I believe there was a reason that Zwick was named the starter at the beginning of the season and that has to do with him mastering the system better than Smith. What Smith did down the stretch was fantastic, especially against Michigan obviously, but I think the guy with the most upside is Zwick. And with all the weapons he didn't have at the beginning of the year, I think Zwick will be hard to unseat as the QB next year. And you all know how much I like the Glenville kids. Smith included.
coachjenks (Jan 27, 2005 2:30:02 PM)
Gary - I feel if a kid is willing to play with coaches at any given university it says something about his character. It makes them seem like an "I" guy. J.G. may not be that way at all, but it seems as though he is playing OSU or USC. What's your take?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:30:02 PM)
I've been told that by many people already. Gwaltney definitely likes himself! But he is a likeable young man and he's very talented. His better days are ahead of him. He's no Reecie at this same stage but the potential is sure there to be special.
Guest (Jan 27, 2005 2:31:56 PM)
May thing on JG is that there is no way Cushing is coming here. Do you think that is as big a factor as is being talked about?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:31:56 PM)
Edbuck asks about Cushing...correct there is no way Cushing is coming here but that is another opportunity for JG to throw up an effective smoke screen. I did see JG and Cushing together on a couple of occasions during the game but I also saw JG and Wells together. Who knows for sure other than the USC media guys?????
BayAreaBuckeye (Jan 27, 2005 2:35:34 PM)
Gary, I live out in California and can understand how tempting the sunny winter days must be for kids, let alone the great football program Pete Carroll has developed. I know the Buckeye program is one of the best in the country, but are we being unrealistic in our expectations of top classes every year? I think we have a much stronger and loyal program than SC, but California is a more attractive spot to live for 4 or 5 years.
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:35:34 PM)
Hi BayAreaBuckeye...I agree totally with your sentiments and the biggest thing about recruiting is that we have to fill our needs whether that makes us a top national class or not. My only concern is that we are very thin at RB and maybe Lenix is the guy they already want at RB but he hasn't played there enough to instinctively be a top RB any time soon. He's all about speed and power but he'll a little more to relay on at the next level. RB scares me so that is one reason why I continue to keep the faith with Gwaltney. We shall see.
Palmer (Jan 27, 2005 2:38:36 PM)
Gary, Refering to what someone said earlier, I would hardly call it a soap opera, this kid has to make a choice that will effect the rest of his life and he has the right to take his time. I was wondering if you could tell me about this new receiver that we just offered, Brian Robiskie. Is he a worthy recruit?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:38:36 PM)
Brian Robiskie is very worthy in all aspects. He's very articulate and very knowledgeable about football. He's every bit a coaches son and more. And he's very young for his grade. He's truly a JT type of recruit in the truest sense. And there are people at Chagrin Falls crossing their fingers that he will be a Buckeye...I can tell you that!
osufan25 (Jan 27, 2005 2:41:04 PM)
Gary, is Ray Fisher in that group of Glenville kids for next year?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:41:05 PM)
Yes Raymond Fisher is worthy enough to be in that top group. He's a flyer no question and made some really big plays at G-ville this past year...really big. He's smaller built that Small who is no giant. But he's an offensive playmaker and kick returner. Any D-I school should take a good look at Fisher and he's a mentally tough kid as well. He's a really good player I think.
DaytonMcHugh (Jan 27, 2005 2:45:09 PM)
Amongst the Seniors to be next year, how does the state of Ohio rank in talent level. Also, will OSU offer that many kids OOS next year since the talent pool is so good. Of course minus the 'must have' kids. Thank you.
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:45:09 PM)
Hi DaytonMcHugh...we really need to get some early commitments out of the way from kids that really want to be Buckeyes next year. The OL pool is good, the QB pool is big, and the RB pool is decent as is the WR pool. Let's get some early commitments from guys in those category and then build from there. I don't know much about OOS guys...Duane as that area covered pretty much. But I think some early instate guys will set the tone. Lyons little brother Wesley for instance would be interested in committing early if we showed him some love and he'll easily be a top national recruit...and he loves the Buckeyes...so don't let him even start looking around.
osufan25 (Jan 27, 2005 2:48:55 PM)
What kids from stark county will get the bucks attention next year?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:48:55 PM)
I'll have to start and end with Mike Hartline and Ryan Palmer right now. There's a couple McKinley guys but I'm not sure if they're juniors this year or not. Mark Jackson is a name that comes to mind. I didn't see a whole lot of standouts in the underclasses in the Federal League this year but I didn't see the whole league. Again Duane would be further along with Stark County than me right now. Louisville and St. Thomas Acquinas have some young guys I heard.
BayAreaBuckeye (Jan 27, 2005 2:51:16 PM)
I love the Buckeyes even more than my own college, and many people would say that I am obsessed with Buckeye Football, but calling a highschool a "feeder program" seems a little depressing in my eyes. If kids have an opportunity to play football and enjoy life at the college of their choice, why should we pressure them to go to one college just because everyone else from their highschool goes there? I want them all to go to OSU, but only because they really want to!
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:51:16 PM)
It's a little tongue and cheek ... sorry for the reference but five guys in three years with more to come ... well that is what it is. It's what they know and breathe at that school. Nobody makes them go anywhere. It is what it is. Sorry if that's depressing.
Guest (Jan 27, 2005 2:52:25 PM)
Is Gwaltney a lost cause? Is that why we have offered Robiskie and the other WR from Indy?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:52:26 PM)
jperkosu asks if Gwaltney is a lost cause... I don't think so but I'm about the only one hanging on at this point. Smile!
buckeyejoey01 (Jan 27, 2005 2:54:02 PM)
Have you heard any news that Robiskie may not visit this weekend?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:54:02 PM)
No...Is there any news saying that today? As far as I know he is visiting and their coach told me he would keep me in the loop. I haven't checked the message boards or my email in a while if there is news. As far as I knew he was looking forward to going there...unless Florida made him change his mind?
Guest (Jan 27, 2005 2:55:17 PM)
With the OSU staff telling Conredge Collins that we already have the two running backs lined up for this class, is this a sign that the coaches know something about Gwaltney that we don't?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 2:55:17 PM)
Bucknuts asks about the relationship with Collins not being pursued by OSU and our chances with Gwaltney...well that's another thread that I'm hanging my hat on at this late in the game. I'm with you on that bucknut57.
ToledoBucknutty (Jan 27, 2005 3:00:26 PM)
Good afternoon Gary! Love the work as always!! Quick question...I have seen Coach Conley say at least a couple of times that Reecie is 10 times better than JG. First of all, we all know Reecie is special....not that kind of special...I am trying to compliment the guy's skills...but what does that even mean? He seems to be awfully high on people's lists to be THAT far behind! I really hope we do indeed land him and I don't get why tOSU fans would ever say anything negative about a guy in whom Tress and crew have given enough credence to offer. Thoughts?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 3:00:26 PM)
Hi Toledobucknutty...thanks for the kind words...I've watched Reecie for a long time...when he was healthy that is...and he was special from the word GO! It just was so easy to tell because he made it look so easy...and he's had the tremendous work ethic for as far back as I've known him. I obviously don't know Gwaltney as intimately and I've only seen him play at the Army game so I'm not able to compare them in any way...but I'll be honest...Johnathan Stewart looked more like Reecie than anyone I saw there. I think he's going to be the really special one. Gwaltney has enough to make you think he can be pretty good at the next level...size speed and strength...but Reecie had more deception than people give him credit for. I saw more of Reecie in Stewart than I saw in Gwaltney.
Guest (Jan 27, 2005 3:01:50 PM)
Gary, has anyone heard who will be visiting Gwaltney? I recall the coaching staff was going to visit some time today.
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 3:01:50 PM)
muskiebuck asks about who will be visiting Gwaltney and I think that happened Wednesday...past tense. I know JT today is tending to personal family business today.

Hi Gary. Youngstown fan here. What do you think of Derrick Stewart and do you think he will make it big at UC? Did tOSU miss out on a good one?
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 3:03:38 PM)
hi nundischcutt...I'm a big Derrick Stewart fan...even Coach Reardon called him the poor man's Mario Manningham and he coached Manningham at Harding. If he was any bigger and his grades were in better shape...Stewart could have been a big-time recruit. Really nice kid though and I wish him luck at Cincinnati. They're in line for another nice little class under Dantonio.
GaryHousteau (Jan 27, 2005 3:06:18 PM)
Sorry there were still more questions but I don't have the time right now. Sorry if I didn't get to your question...If you'd like to post it on the message board or e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org, for anybody, then I'll do my best to get back at you. Unfortunately it's been hectic with LOI day just around the corner...Thanks everyone for taking part in my first chat on my own. Now maybe we can do a night time chat every once in a while if you would like that better. See you after signing day! Go Bucks!
