Gary, what is your take on Elzy? Will the Bucks take another back, and if so, will he get a look? Is he a B10 type back?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:07:12 PM)
Hi all the way in 2005...I like Elzy a lot. If we do take another back this year I would love for it to be him. He's like a mini Chris Wells, and he's got great speed and great instincts as a runner. And he's got pretty good size. He's a natural running back. He likes OSU early but he also is looking at Notre Dame early. He's in my backyard in Warren and there is no chance of Michigan in sight. At least not now. He's at JFK in Warren.
BuckeyeBK (Feb 10, 2005 8:09:45 PM)
Hey Gary!!!: How shocked were you at Wells' early decision and is Gibson leaning our way?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:09:46 PM)
Hi BK...Yes I was because I just talked to him on the Wednesday before he committed and he told me he wanted to play it out even though he liked the Bucs a whole lot. If you remember reading it, I said that if he had to commit now it would be Ohio State, not thinking he would do it. But the tea leaves were pointing that way and I'm glad he pulled the trigger. He belongs at Ohio State. I think we got a really good shot to land Gibson. I stopped at his school on signing day just to tell him I'd see him there again next year, but he wasn't in. I said then I'd take Homan and Gibson and be happy and we're half way there.
BigBiggie (Feb 10, 2005 8:12:06 PM)
What are your thought on Thad Gibson and what are our chances?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:12:06 PM)
Hi Big Biggie...love the name...I like the potential of Gibson when he fills out some more. I stated previously I think he has the hight ceiling than Homan but I'm happy with Homan in the fold already. I think we get Gibson as well and I'm happy about that. I think we look good for Dareus Smith, Brandon's younger brother at Euclid as well. If we want him, we got him. Again, I'm really happy with Homan and Gibson at LB. Smile!
Wilsy20 (Feb 10, 2005 8:14:50 PM)
If you had to guess, who do you think will be the next commit..it seems like alot of Ohio Kids want to get the decision proccess out of the way
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:14:51 PM)
Hi Wilsy20...It's hard to say because some of the kids like Rose and Small want to take the tour but they're for sure Buckeyes... both of them. I've already listed them on my commitment list. Smile! Rose is a big Buckeye fan and so is Small and they're very close friends. I'm sure they've been high-fiving for a week now. Rose's tie only matched his suit that day...I asked him why he was wearing blue and gold...he laughed. Count him in and Small. Whose next? I don't know the linemen well enough yet to say. It's early and we're off to a good start anyway.
Heater (Feb 10, 2005 8:18:12 PM)
Gary--thanks for the night time chat. I can NEVER get into chats during the work day. Anyway, compare Wells to Clarett (on and off the field) and give the latest if you can on the RB derby for next fall.
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:18:12 PM)
Hi Heater...About Chris Wells and Clarett...Wells is much bigger for starters. Both have great work ethic. Wells is so much more grounded than Reecie ever will be. I'm expecting to be wooed big time by Wells next year...I'll be a regular at their games next year. I need to see him break more long runs to be considered anywhere near Reecie. He had an impressive TD run against Copley but it wasn't enough although he played great in that game. Biddle wrote a nice piece on him if you haven't read it. I was at that game and I remember that 4th and 1 play he was alluding to. Reecie is Reecie. On the field Edge to Reecie. Off the field edge to Wells...by far.
BuckeyeBK (Feb 10, 2005 8:21:18 PM)
Gary: If Conley goes to Minnesota, do you think they will start taking more recruits that OSU wants, or will it have minimal impact?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:21:18 PM)
Hi BK ... your busy tonight already...nice to see you chat at night with us. Honestly I see it having a minimal impact more than the situation already is. They got three guys out of C-bus this year without Conley. I really would have loved to get Daniels but it's no big biggee as TGII would say. Really were comparing apples to watermelons here. Minn needs all the Ohio boys they can get with or without Conley. Good luck to him if he does go there. I guess you can see that he and JT are like oil and water...obviously!
osufan25 (Feb 10, 2005 8:25:27 PM)
Hey Gary! Do you think Lance Smith from Warren will also get a look?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:25:27 PM)
Hi osufan25. I like Lance Smith a lot. Boy is he a splitting image of Ray Williams IMHO so naturally I like him. He can play football for sure. He's in my top three right now... Wells, Elzy and Smith. Deion Carter of Copley is pretty good too but he's in the Tyrell Sutton mold. I hear that he needs some work to do in the class room still but can do it and I also here that next year he might be playing for the school in Warren that likes to send guys to that school up north. I'm sure Dick Angle will do what he can to keep him at Howland...but some birdie just told me that recently.
Wilsy20 (Feb 10, 2005 8:30:06 PM)
Will the Rose and Smalls drag out the process like all the other Glenville Kids....and do you see Glenvile being a recruiting hotben for decades or is this just a 3-4 stint?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:30:06 PM)
Yes they will unfortunately. But you've heard it here early that I'll be photographing both of them next year on signing day with an OSU scholarship in hand. And yes there is more to come maybe even this year. And next year, Duane has been mentioning Kyle Jefferson for a while now and he's the biggest diamond in the rough right now. The pipeline is a coming. Their RB next year will be Bruce Frieson and Ginn Sr. says to wait till you see him run next year. He will be a senior who became eligible after transferring only late in the season this year. Kind of like O'Neal a year ago. And they got Royce Adams from St. Ed's already for next year. They're loaded.
silvrbullets7777 (Feb 10, 2005 8:32:01 PM)
What is your view on Coach Conley and Minnesota?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:32:01 PM)
Hi Silverbullets7777...don't know much about it. I'm out of the loop on that right now. I'm sure Steve knows as much as anyone knows about it right now. I know Steve thinks very highly of Conley and would probably hate to lose him as a contributor to the best internet college sight going. This site rocks and rolls. No one comes close to what goes on at Bucknuts! No one!
buckeyeots (Feb 10, 2005 8:35:15 PM)
What is the real scoop on Justin Boren. Is he a buckeye lean or is he favoring michigan
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:35:15 PM)
Hi buckeyeots...Again...I'm not ashamed to say I don't know enough about him yet to say other than what I've read. I've barely had time to breathe since San Antonio and then signing day. No excuse, just a fact. I will learn all the Ohio players I need to know as well as I can...as soon as I can. I like Brown, Smith and Bohren a whole lot right now. But I also like Ryan Palmer and I like Bryant Browning. Browing ran an incredible time for a big man down in SA last month. It's a great linemen class this year. I want them all!
gary golfs (Feb 10, 2005 8:38:58 PM)
hey gary, who do u think Fox spot at corner next year?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:38:58 PM)
Hi gary golfs...that's a loaded question for me. Everyone knows what I think of Ted Ginn. If the best player plays...it's him. I'm sure he will get a ton of reps this spring and summer at corner because he wants to play there. He's going to work his little rear end off to prove he can play there. I'll take it. But who really will play there? It looks like E.J. Underwood really blew his big chance.and that's a shame. O'Neal probably could but not right away. It's not his natural position and he will need a whole new mentality change to play there. He's too aggressive to play there but he's talented enough to. I say if the cream rises...it's Ginn. Call me crazy! Guilty!
Guest (Feb 10, 2005 8:42:30 PM)
Coach Conley mentioned there were 2 player that we signed that were off the recruiting list a few month ago..I guess that assume washington and robiskie...Since they guy are projects..would it of been better if we just save the scholarship for the deep talent in Ohio this year?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:42:30 PM)
Hey yo!..is that redundant?...Here's what I know. First of all I like Robiskie and always have. I'm very happy if he was an afterthought. Give him a redshirt year and watch him develop. He's got everything except the blazing speed but he's got speed. He doesn't have to take a back seat to anyone whether he was first or last in the class. And secondly, someone who knows recently told me that the staff was somewhat enamored with Washington when he came in to visit and commit. I think we got more than we bargained for with Washington from what I was told. I guess we will find out more down the line but I'm happy with both at this time. Potential is strong on both accounts.
section22 (Feb 10, 2005 8:45:00 PM)
Hi Gary, Do you sense the coaching staff wants to get back on top after2 years of turmoil?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:45:00 PM)
He section22...of course and don't we all. This is the year for it. This is A.J. Hawk's last go around and it's going to be a special year. We're a young yet veteran ball club with a lot of talent. We're solid at QB no matter who starts and there is depth everywhere on the field. And we have TGII. Need I say more. I hope to be in Pasadena when the Buckeyes are there in January!
Heater (Feb 10, 2005 8:51:36 PM)
Gary--I saw you mention Warren. Why is it that Tressel's old stompin' grounds are not a "hot bed" for Ohio State recruiting? You would think that his influence there would mean something to coaches and such. But, in your opinion, what gives in the Mahoning Valley?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:51:36 PM)
Harding is Harding. It's a confined area in the Mahoning Valley that has a major, almost hands on influence and it's disgusting if you ask me. I can't stomach it. I'm happy for Manningham..I really am because I like him as a talent a lot...but I hate the fact that he's going to that school up north. There's really nothing JT can do about it because he's not hands on there. And even thought McDaniels is a strong alley, he doesn't push the recruiting aspect of it to Ohio State in any major way. These kids are already infected by the time they're ready to be recruited. I like RB Danny Heron a whole lot and I hope we'll have a shot at him in two years. I think DT Tony Reed will be their top recruit this coming year and I'm not sure he's of the top level variety that Harding has been producing recently.
osufan25 (Feb 10, 2005 8:54:58 PM)
Gary, I think this is a great start to the 06 recruiting class. It kind of reminds me of 02 and this talent pool may be just as deep. How many of these nine guys will be bucks and who will be next to get an offer?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:54:58 PM)
Hi osufan25...I think theres really good chance that all of the early offers could be Buckeyes and I think the coaches knew that before they were offered. Again count Small and Rose in the class and I think Gibson as well. That's five. I think Brown could certainly be on board and so will Smith... I think. Thats 7. I think from what I've heard that Bohren is a good shot as well. That's eight. Who am I missing? I think we've got a real good chance for all of them. The QB position will be a quagmire of a situation and understandably so. Who am I missing?
BuckeyeBK (Feb 10, 2005 8:57:40 PM)
Gary: What are you hearing on Lyons? Will we offer? Will he accept?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 8:57:40 PM)
About Lyons...I'm guessing we will offer and yes he would accept. The longer we wait on him, the more he'll be wondering around ... I say lock him up now with an offer! I spoke to his dad in Jamaica this week, he's on vacation and the family loves Ohio State. Get it done. Great potential.
Guest (Feb 10, 2005 9:04:49 PM)
Hey Gary!!! - With no TE in this 2005 class (unless LW moves), is there any big TE on the horizon? With CWells coming on board next year, I've got to believe that Coach Tressel looks for some Power I Smash Mouth football. He'll have Rory Nicol for two more years, but the pipeline seems a little thin at this position.
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:04:49 PM)
DrukenSailor asked about the tight end situation...I've seen Jeff Cumberland from Brookhaven and I think he's more finesse and I've seen Jerome Jones and I think he likes defense more at OLB and he might even like basketball than football..but he's a talent. Massillon has had a talent void the last few years and I'm not sure that Huffman is the answer there. I'm not sure what position Boeckman's younger brother at St. Henry is on offense but he can be a solid player at tight end. I think he was only a junior last year. Great size. But I like Hamby and Nicol next year for sure. What a great veteran pair they can be. And Frost is the unknown commodity who I expect will have a great spring and we will be talking about him in the fall. The cupboard isn't bare for sure next year.
BigBiggie (Feb 10, 2005 9:11:34 PM)
Prediciton time! What lesser known prospect(s) shows big in the camps and earns major offers?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:11:35 PM)
That's hard to say but if you watch Benedictine play at all you can see they're loaded with talent. I really like Jahmal Brown as a running back. I really, really do! Fantastic moves and instincts but a bit undersized. Love him. He's a natural. I also like Troy Huddleston on that team at RB but I love Brown. I also think John Dunn is a sleeper at receiver. All playmakers in a big way. And I'll mention Bruce Feison again from Glenville as a RB that no one is expecting anything from next year. I need to see some linebackers step up. I think Chris Wells could be the best linebacker in Ohio next year if he played there full time. He's good on defense. I'm looking for some stud LB's if you know of any other really good ones let me know at email@example.com. I like other lesser knowns like Jake Ballard, Javoni Chappel, Peris Edwards and Joe Underwood.
osufan25 (Feb 10, 2005 9:16:55 PM)
Gary, What are your thoughts on the wider receivers like Wes Lyons, Troy Paisley, Daven Jones, Myles Trempe and Rob Parris? I'm suprised they havent' offered Lyons yet. It sounds like he wants to be a buckeye in the worst way.
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:16:55 PM)
osufan25 asks about wide receivers. I love Daven Jones in a big way. He's the Curtis Smith of next year's class. Smith wasn't a very happy guy on signing day...no offense to Cincinnati. I like the potential of Lyons in a big way. Duane speaks highly of Paisley who I will make it a mission of mine to go see him in the spring. I love Robbie Parris. I can see him being in this class. Great prospect. He can do it all! And I don't know much about Trempe at this time other than he's very tall like Lyons...not quite as tall. Good group of names there though. Real good names. Lorenzo Hunter could have been right there as could David Lighty...maybe he still can be there. Add Dunn's name to the watch list also, please.
eddycorbetty (Feb 10, 2005 9:21:12 PM)
I am new to this and am not sure how this works but - How many unused scholorships do we have and why not try for a few 2 and 1 stars that may need to grow into a position a little.
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:21:12 PM)
Hi eddycorbetty...welcome to the chat tonight...please come again. I haven't had the time to figure out how the schollies have been doled out in terms of numbers...Steve is really good at that...but I know we didn't use them all and now JT can reward some current seniors on the roster next year with a scholarship if he chooses. That's typically how it goes from here. And maybe Pettrey could win one. I have to be honest and I don't know his entire situation but I'm not really happy about how his situation has worked out. And the punter Thoma...from Aquinas...has a shot to earn a schollie I believe. He's not too far from me so I'll have to go and check on him and his coach there played for JT at YSU. It's always good to reward a few walkons with ships at some point if they earn it.
riverwatchbucknut (Feb 10, 2005 9:24:13 PM)
Gary what do you know about Lyons and Walls from Pa? Had a chance to talk to them.... get any impressions?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:24:13 PM)
Hi riverwatchbucknut...I spoke to Lyons earlier in the week and I think he would be honored to follow his brother to Ohio State. I like his upside potential at receiver a whole lot. This is a big offseason for him. I know Walls is interested in OSU from talking with him in the fall but I haven't spoken to him recently. Good size for a lock down corner was my initial impression of him in the fall. He's being compared to a Mundy type of player from Woodland Hills. Two really good players who could both go from being Wolverines to Buckeyes!
osufan25 (Feb 10, 2005 9:29:04 PM)
Thanks so much for taking my questions Gary! Can you talk a little bit about the D-Linemen in next years class. i don't know much about Tony Reed, Channels, Rose, Ryan or Wade. Are they all big time?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:29:04 PM)
Reed is a fireplug inside and they've been talking about him for a couple of years in Warren now. He needs to get in a little better shape IMO. Could be a big timer not so sure right now. Rose is a monster and had a great combine in San Antonio. He looked much better on defense than the player that won that award. He's a Buckeye. Ryan's got a lot of potential and could be a really good one for Iggy next year. I don't want to say another Simon Fraser yet but he resembles him. I'll be watching him. And I don't know much now about Channels or Wade. Again forgive my bias to the north but those are the players that I see. I hope to soon be able to expand my operation all over Ohio and that's what I'm working toward accomplishing. Hopefully sooner rather than later!
BuckeyeBK (Feb 10, 2005 9:31:07 PM)
Gary: You hearing anything on Boren? Will he follow in the last OL who's dad played at Michigan? Smile!~
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:31:07 PM)
I'm hearing some good things from some people I've spoken to about Boren and I'd love to see another T.J. Downing situation here. It's certainly possibly. I just hope he comes back from Michigan's junior day still in play. If he does than we have a real good shot at him. I'm sure they'll bring the big guns out for him though. I bet they feel he belongs to them! We shall see.
BuckeyeDave (Feb 10, 2005 9:36:16 PM)
I'm late to the chat. Sorry if this has already been asked. Chris Wells seems like what you might call a "Cornerstone" recruit. A cornerstone of the 2006 recruiting class. Is Homan the same type of recruit? What other recruits might be considered "Conberstone"?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:36:16 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave...better late than never. Sure Homan was an important piece because he reeks of being a Buckeye and it was important to nail him down early to build upon. I think Brown would be a great building block as would Smith. Add Boren to them and now were talking anything else is a bonus. Throw in Small and Rose and even Gibson and I think just about everyone offered early could be a tremendous building block of this class. I really like the overall talent in this class. I'm torn with the QB's but I have to go with Hartline right now. I like all three and I think Davis could be the best of the lot but Hartline has played with the big boys already and won a playoff game as well. Great size and a much better athlete than people think. He could be an awesome talent and out of respect to the other two, I think that's why he hasn't been offered yet.
osufan25 (Feb 10, 2005 9:38:16 PM)
My last question... What are your thoughts on Devin Torrence? Is he the best player in 07 and do you think he sticks with football over baseball?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:38:16 PM)
I haven't seen him yet but I will see him. Others on this sight have spoken highly of him and I'm looking forward to getting my own read on him this year. But yes his name has come up often when I'm asking around for other names of talented players. I'll know more about him this time next year that's for sure and his little brother.

GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:40:16 PM)
HunterdonBuck ask about Connor Smith and I've been making a few inquiries about him recently and I've heard good things about him. I love him from seeing him after I knew who he was though on tape. I feel pretty good from what I've heard up to this point. I'm looking forward to finding out more about him and his dad.

Gary, with the soon to be arrival of Worthington, Williams, and Wilson- what do you think it does to the potential playing time for Vernon and Barrow?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:47:15 PM)
Hi Bucks4life...I really like Worthington a lot. I like Wilson a lot too. As a matter of fact, Wilson has no idea of how good he can be whereas Worthington is a little farther along right now. I can't speak much about Williams. I was sent a tape of one of his games... in return I just sent back a TGII 8x10 Glenville photo...but Williams played on arguably the best team in California and was a main cog on that team so I'm excited about that. Gohlston just looks the part and Barrow flashed the skills in both all-star games last summer. I like the football potential in that group. May the best men win! Let's move them around on the line if we have to. Back in Sept. Worthington's coach told me he won't be surprised if Worthington is an offensive tackle down the line. We shall see.

I think a lot of people overlook Erik Haw, he excites me. I like how he is a Columbus native and loves being a Buckeye. 6-1/210 timed at 4.2! What are your thoughts on him, and can he make an impact this upcoming season?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:49:33 PM)
You're question excites me silverbullets7777. I've heard great reports about Erik Haw recently. I believe that he's ready to have a breakout season. I love everything about him including his speed. I think the redshirt year, now that he survived it, was the best thing in the world for him. He will be a treat to watch in the future as early as this year...yes. He will be our "Big Back" next year until Wells arrives. It's a big spring for Haw no question.
BuckeyeDave (Feb 10, 2005 9:52:32 PM)
Chris Wells has the same frame as M Clarett. He has also been compared favorably to Clarett. Besides character, what doesC Wells have that Clarett didn't and vice versa?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:52:32 PM)
We talked abou this earlier BuckeyeDave, the biggest difference between the two is their off the field demeanor. Wells is longer than Reecie no question and looks more like a galloper in the open field. Wells was 6-2 in his socks in his coaches office last summer. I witnessed that. Both guys deliver blows. I'd love to see the two in a foot race. And remember...Wells is still so young.
Buckeye4u (Feb 10, 2005 9:54:54 PM)
Hello Gary! The Women BB team just blew out Michigan by 33 points! Great day! :-) IF nobody asked you... After Chris Wells, who in Akron-Youngstown-Warren is a must-get for OSU ?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:54:54 PM)
Great news for the Lady Bucks...tremendous beating the school up north in marbles let alone football and basketball. Next year early on...Elzy is the biggest prize from JFK. Jerome Jones and Joe Underwood of Ursuline are also right there. Lance Smith from Howland is there and Tony Reed from Harding are there. I'm sure there could be more but for now that's the big names that I know of.

Gary, what took the Bucks so long to offer Stross? Did he go to their camp last year? He has a lot of talent from what I've seen.
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:56:57 PM)
Cisco asks about Stross... I really don't know the situation with Stross...he's a really good player and he played in the Army AA Bowl, enough said. But I'm happy with the Amos, Hartline, Robiskie trio that we ended up with. Could Stross play defense? I'm sure he can but I'm sure he'd hope to play offense if it works out that way for him. Just a numbers thing with Stross.
BuckeyeDave (Feb 10, 2005 9:58:18 PM)
The Rose Bowl is always a sell out by contract, so how does an Average Joe like me get tickets (without paying a scalper an arm and a leg!)?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 9:58:18 PM)
Steve is the guy to ask that question! I'm hoping an average Joe like me will be there as well but with a media credential hanging around my neck on the sideline. Smile!

Gary--thanks for the answers earlier...how do you rank order the Ohio QBs this year? And when was the last time there this was talent at QB in Ohio in a single class?
GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 10:00:53 PM)
From Heater about the quarterbacks...if I had to rate them right now I would say Hartline, Davis and Schlichter in that order. But I'm hoping to see more of Schlichter this summer or fall...until one of the QB's get the big offer. I think we only take one this year. I've seen all three in person now, Schlichter at the camp, and I like all three. Davis is the best looking from a physical standpoint.

GaryHousteau (Feb 10, 2005 10:03:14 PM)
reallytired asked about 2007 championship and I'm getting really tired at this point...but if you're talking about the 2006 season with TGII in his last year ...then yes by that definition... we will still be in contention. I think we have a two-year window minimum in front of us right now.

O.k. Here's my question. I've been a Buckeye faithful since my Mom was wiping my butt and I have a problem with the lack of prop's the fiercest linebacker OSU has ever seen receives. Of course I'm talking about Andy Katzenmoyer. If I'm correct, he is the only linebacker in OSU history to win the underrated Butkus Award. Do you think someday his name will grace the ring of honor in the most sacred of hollowed grounds, "The Shoe"? P.S. It's GREAT to be a Buckeye fan!!!!!

From Johnnybuckeye about Katzenmoyer...One of my all-time favs as well. Not sure if he gets up top of the Shoe though. He was truly a great one while we had him here though.

Gary, Question about Ray Small,Buckeye for sure? Rivals USC reports that he said, "USC is his dream school", anything to be worried about?

Hi buckerr...Tell everyone you know at USC to forget about it now. It won't even be a contest in the end. He's a Buckeye! Wink! Dream is the operative word in that question. Him and Rose will take the tour and become Buckeyes. Wink, Wink!

With that question...I'll have to end it here but I'm thankful to everyone for participating in the chat tonight. And thanks to those of you reading the chat after the fact. The night chat worked out great for me this week and I hope it was a nice change up for you all as well. I hope we keep the momentum going strong with recruiting and before long spring ball will be here. Can't wait. Thanks again! Go Bucks!
