Chat Wrap - Gary Housteau - Feb. 17

Gary Housteau stopped by for today's Bucknuts Club Chat to discuss recruiting and next year's Buckeye team. Read on for a transcript of today's chat.

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 11:41:01 AM)
Hi Internet service was and now I just got a live connection. Sorry for being late. I'm here now if you want to fire away.

ODOGG45 (Feb 17, 2005 11:47:01 AM)
Hello Gary - how would you compare Rob Rose to Pierre Woods? Also just how good is Small on offense and do you see his future position on O or D?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 11:47:01 AM)
Hi ODOGG45...great question to start the chat out with today...Both guys are physical specimens. Rose is thicker while Woods was leaner and much more cut up. Rose is more sturdier than Woods at this stage and he can play inside or out. Woods had and probably still has an ever running motor and was probably quicker and faster than Rose at this stage or looks like he is. But Rose ran a 4.7 in San Antonio so that's pretty good.

fotownbuckeye (Feb 17, 2005 11:49:28 AM) who starts at CB next season? that should be a start

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 11:49:28 AM)
Hi fotownbuckeye...this is the $64,000 question. I've stated before that if you play the best guy opposite Youboty it will be TGII. Other people think otherwise for other reasons and that's fine. I think he can still be a weapon on offense while playing fulltime on defense. He's Teddy! Let's use him up fast because he'll be gone after three years. I mean use him up in a good way. He's the best to come down the pike in a long time if not ever.

sinbad (Feb 17, 2005 11:52:29 AM)
Hey Gary !!! PD is reporting that Mel Tucker may interview with the Browns. Do you have any info?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 11:52:29 AM)
Hi Sinbad...thanks for repeating your question...yes rumors have been circulating that to be the case and I'd rather not comment either way about what I know and don't know. I would hate to lose Tucker period because he has such a good rapport with coaches and kids. I think college fits him well at this stage in his career. I will just wait and see along with the rest of us what happens if anything. But yes I have heard that before the article today although I haven't seen the article yet. Let's hope he stays put.

busman64 (Feb 17, 2005 11:55:15 AM)
Hey gary, how big of an impact do you think that mo wells can make from day 1

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 11:55:15 AM)
Hi busman64...Ideally I'd like to see him have a major impact from day one because that would mean that we hit the recruiting bananza with him but selfishly, I'd like to see both Haw and Pittman really have a chance to shine next year. From what I have been hearing, Haw is really stepping up to the plate right now and I think he's worthy of a good shot and he'll get it this spring. So will Pittman. I'm excited about those two. But if Wells is everything that everyone says he can be, then I'm excited about that too.

edbuck51 (Feb 17, 2005 11:56:11 AM)
Have the high schools in Ohio ever thought about having spring practice in football? This is common in Cali, Fla., and Texas.

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 11:56:11 AM)
Hi edbuck51...I don't know the answer to that but I doubt it. It would take away from the other sports and the OHSAA cares deeply about all of the sports they sanction.

Carr (Feb 17, 2005 12:00:06 PM)
Are we going hard after Tebow? His videos are amazing.

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:00:06 PM)
Hi Carr...I'd like to tell you yeah and I'm sure we'll put a big play in for him, but I don't know and I doubt that we'd have any shot at him anyway. I for one would like to concentrate on our big three this year and may the best man win. I would like to wait until midway through the season and see how each of the three are responding to the challenge and then offer the best one. My early money is on Mike Hartline although I like what I've seen in all three of them. And I think we could only possibly take one unless we can talk Davis into coming to OSU on a basketball scholarship.

Guest (Feb 17, 2005 12:03:06 PM)
Gary about the corner situation, dont you think the best fit for our dbs would be to move Donte Whitner to corner, seeing as he was the #1 Corner coming out. I think it would be a lot easier to replace Whitner at safety (Sirjo Welch).

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:03:06 PM)
busman 64 asks about the corner situation and moving Whitner there. I saw a lot of Glenville in person and on tape over the years and I never saw Whitner play corner. He was a safety at Glenville and a safety now. That's his natural position, just like it is for Jamario O'Neal. Instincts make both a natural and an aggressive safety. Both could be coached up to play corner I'm sure but Whitner isn't going nowhere. I wouldn't put O'Neal there either but that's just my opinion because I've seen him rock people too many times as a safety.

fotownbuckeye (Feb 17, 2005 12:04:33 PM)
So if he starts at CB (Ginn) who plays at WR when he is not on the field. At the end of the year our Wr's seemed to really be coming around.

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:04:33 PM)
Take your pick...the bodies will be there and TGII will still come over and make plays. He's good enough to go fulltime both ways. Go tell Teddy that he isn't. The kid is unlike anyone we've ever witnessed. I've been saying that for years now. He's been amazing at two sports since his sophomore year in HS.

edbuck51 (Feb 17, 2005 12:06:05 PM)
That's one way to look at it. But, if you had football guys playing football in the spring, it may give an opportunity for other athletes to participate in those sports who might not normally since many of the footballers would be taking up spots.

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:06:05 PM)
Thats a valid point but we just don't do up here that way in the rust belt. A lot of track coaches are football coaches anyway. It would be a lifestyle change and I don't see it happening.

getanotherback (Feb 17, 2005 12:07:40 PM)
why were both whitner and o'neal listed on your site as corners

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:07:40 PM)
Hi getanotherback...I don't have anything to do with rankings or listing for either or bucknuts so I don't the reason for that. Steve can answer that in his chat tomorrow.

getanotherback (Feb 17, 2005 12:10:53 PM)
as Ginn became more effective as a wide out, he drew more attention from the defense and made the remainder of the offense look more balanced .remove that threat and it will have to be compensated for by someone else. who might you recommend?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:10:53 PM)
I never said anything about removing that threat. Teddy is Teddy and he can do it all. He has no limits and he rises to every challenge and excels on every stage. I haven't seen a mediocre performance from him yet. He's Teddy Ballgame.

Carr (Feb 17, 2005 12:11:54 PM)
who of the big 3 offensive linemen do you think that we get?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:11:54 PM)
All of them. I just have a good feeling. The kids that I've talked to that were at junior day all had great things to say about each other and that bodes well for a great class next year.

MinnesotaBuckeye (Feb 17, 2005 12:14:50 PM)
Gary...I may use a bad word does Reecie get drafted? If so, first day or second day?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:14:50 PM)
Hi MinnesotaBuckeye...yes Reecie does get picked but it has to be on the second day. For one there are too many other safer picks ahead of him but someone will definitely take a chance. He's still the best young back that I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Obviously I think it's deplorable what he allowed to happen but that doesn't change the way I think about him and that will resonate with some football people as well. He's a talent but a major risk.

WVBuckeye (Feb 17, 2005 12:18:14 PM)
If Smith is eligible from day one next year, who will be the starting QB, does Boehman have a chance?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:18:14 PM)
Hi WWBuckeye...Even if Smith is eligible I don't think he plays in week one. That being said, I think Zwick wins the job in the spring anyway. The players around him are much better than the ones he started the season with last year. It's just great to have two experienced QB's going into next season. And no Boeckman has no shot to start with this veteran team about to make a run at a national championship.

sinbad (Feb 17, 2005 12:18:34 PM)
Can you imagine if TGII raises his level of play from year 1 to year 2 the way Lebron has this year?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:18:34 PM)
He will. It's a given.

WVBuckeye (Feb 17, 2005 12:20:39 PM)
Who steps up on the Dline next year? Will we be able to keep the OL off our linebackers?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:20:39 PM)
Hi WVBuckeye...can you say Quinn Pitcock? Monster! I like Kudla a lot as well. I think you can throw in anyone else with those two because they're all capable talents. We'll see who of the lot steps up during the spring. It's exciting to see all the talent we have on defense.

bucks4fun (Feb 17, 2005 12:23:42 PM)
Could you foresee a nickel package to include Youboty and 4 Glenville db's in the future?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:23:42 PM)
Hi bucks4fun...that's more possible than you realize. They might now all be DBs but I can see a scenario where Whitner, O'Neal, Ginn, Lenix and Terry are all on the field and maybe even Small and Rose at the same time. In fact that possibility has already been talked about.

MinnesotaBuckeye (Feb 17, 2005 12:29:42 PM)
Gary...what do you know about TE prospects in Ohio? Especially as it relates to the Buckeyes filling a need there in this upcoming class. I know about Reuland, but he may stay out West. What about Ballard in Springboro? Any others?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:29:42 PM)
I was alerted about Ballard early last season by an avid bucknuts fan. I think it was before the season as a matter of fact. I get HS coaches and people from our website emailing me about players all the time. It's one of the reasons why I always give out my e-mail address. It's But I've been hearing that he may be a future tackle prospect at the next level. I haven't seen him in person or on film so I can't really comment. I hear he has a lot of potential though. I think Jerome Jones from Ursuline could be a good prospect there but he likes basketball and he's a pretty good outside LB as well. Jeff Cumberland is a pass catching TE who would need to bulk up to play TE at OSU. I don't think Brookhaven is exactly a pipeline to Ohio State though. I like Reuland and he's an Ohio native like Ryan Williams. I think he was born in Springboro ... isn't that a coincidence?

buckeyedan (Feb 17, 2005 12:30:17 PM)
will nugent get picked on the first day?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:30:17 PM)
Hi Buckeyedan...I sure hope so. I hope in the second round.

ToledoBucknutty (Feb 17, 2005 12:33:30 PM)
Hi Gary and thanks! Do you think that with all of the linebackers graduating next year that our "window" is about as large as next season, or do you think that our young core of talent could keep us a player on the national scene (meaning potential title runs) for years to come?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:33:30 PM)
Hi ToledoBucknutty and thank you! I really see us with a strong two-year window right now mainly because of our QB situation and the fact that TGII will be here for those two years. But the young talent keeps getting better. I actually am looking forward to Boeckman, Schoenhoft and potentially Hartline battling for the QB position three years from now. But yes our window if fully open wide next year.

buckeyedan (Feb 17, 2005 12:38:49 PM)
do you think OSU can have a solid kicking/punting game or is this a major worry for any Championship run next year?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:38:49 PM)
Earlier today I spoke with the coach of Jonathan Thoma and he said that this kid is a "huge" diamond in the rough. This coach Tim Tyrell played for JT at YSU and he knows how important the punt is to JT. Thoma only played one year and he often had a soccer game a couple of hours before the football game and still averaged 48 yard per kick He's 6-2, 190 and was an all-state soccer kid. His coach said he came to OSU because he loves the challenge of wanting to win the starting job and a scholarship. He's a great athlete and will have five letters this school years including one is swimming. From the fifth game on 100 percent of his kickoffs went into the endzone. He's got a cannon for a leg and will only get better. I think Huston can be the answer in FG kicking this year. Overall I'm sure JT will have a solid kicking game. He puts too much emphasis on it not to.

buckeyedan (Feb 17, 2005 12:41:38 PM)
what do they do with whoever doesn't win the MLB spot between? how do they work them in? just seem too valuable to sit any of the top 4 LBs!

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:41:38 PM)
I think they get creative and use some 3-4 with two MLB in certain situations like they sort of did last year. But the best man or men will play and that should make the competition at practice and this spring much more intense. It's better to have too much talent there than not enough. Hoobler can learn a lot from the guys in front of him for when he eventually takes over the position.

Guest (Feb 17, 2005 12:43:57 PM)
Hi Gary, will we see a tailback by committee with each getting 10-12 carries and see who excels, or does Pittman get to tote the rock?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:43:57 PM)
Bucks4fun asks about tailback by committee next year. I think we're going plenty of Pittman and Haw no matter how you slice it and I feel good about both of them. If Wells is good enough to make it a committee than so be it but I really think Haw will surprise in a big way this year and Pittman will be an improvement on what we saw of him in his first year. I think it's Pittman's job to lose going in but Haw will earn big carries.

getanotherback (Feb 17, 2005 12:48:37 PM)
do you see us going for two dt 's this year and who are the best that we are in on

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:48:37 PM)
I don't necessarily seeing getting two DT's although getting Rose and another DT gives us a situation that will have the potential of getting two DTs. I know Rose would rather play on the outside but I saw enough from him inside at tackle to make me think he can play that position with success. He's versatile enough to play inside or outside but I'd like to see him inside at the next level. Tony Reed has the potential to be a really good inside guy but he has some work to do without question. A name like Channels keeps coming up but I don't know enough about him yet.

WVBuckeye (Feb 17, 2005 12:50:52 PM)
Saw Nate Davis play B-Ball the other night, what a great athlete. Would he have to operate more out of a spread offense, rather than just a drop back passer?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:50:52 PM)
Boy he's a great looking prospect. Very smooth and athletic at the quarterback position. And he's not a run first guy in any way. He's a thrower with a cannon for an arm and a pretty spiral and yet he's very mobile. I would like to see him on the hard wood if you can pass along his schedule to me as the playoffs get underway.

buckeyedan (Feb 17, 2005 12:54:05 PM)
what WR do you see stepping up to help take some "need" away from having to use Ginn on Offense? Nobody really stood out as a #2 last year until Ginn? Any one this year?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:54:05 PM)
Devon Lyons...I know that he's recovering from an offseason injury right now so that might slow his progress but he's a can't-miss pure receiver who makes great yardage after the catch. Give him confidence and it's all over! Of course Devin Jordan was a really good high school player but he's been hurt pretty much since he's been here. He could be a surprise. We obviously ccan't count on Dukes but he would be a bonus for sure. Lyons could be the guy though. And will the real Roy Hall please stand up?

buckeyedan (Feb 17, 2005 12:56:37 PM)
Any eligibility issues? With the incoming freshmen or returners (other than underwood)?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:56:37 PM)
Privately, exclugin Underwood and Maupin who are all but gone from the team already, I've heard two other names of guys that are on the team that need to take care of their academics in a big way right now. As far as the guys coming in, only O'Neal and Lenix are potential problems for admissions but both already have enough for the Clearinghouse process. So I don't think we will have any problem in the end with the new guys.

buckeyedan (Feb 17, 2005 12:59:06 PM)
Will Ginn continue to be the PR and who do you see as the main KR?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 12:59:06 PM)
Yes for punt returns and I think Ginn needs to get his hands on kickoff returns as well.

MinnesotaBuckeye (Feb 17, 2005 1:01:41 PM)
Gary...rank the top QBs in Ohio. Who do the Buckeyes go after the most? Does the Hakes kid in Texas have a shot? And do we have a shot at Tebow?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 1:01:41 PM)
Hartline, Davis and Schlichter. I like a kid named Allen Price from Tallmadge a lot but I don't think he will have the opportunity to excel a great deal in his offense at Tallmadge. No and no as far as the other two kids!

wwt (Feb 17, 2005 1:05:20 PM)
You mention J. Thoma's punting and kickoffs. Is he in line for FG's as well? Do you think there is more to the Pettrey (sp?) situation than is known. How can he be "attending classes" down in his hometown area and not have that count towards his eligibility?

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 1:05:20 PM)
I was told that it would be a major adjustment still for Thoma to have success as a FG kicker because he's so new to the sport in general. He only played one year. His coach told me was 3 of 6 on FGs and they only used him on long range kicks because they had a FG kicker returning with some experience. He hit a 52-yarder last year but needs to work on his fundaments to become a regular FG guy. It's not his forte right now. I don't know about Pettrey to really comment on his situation. I think Steve has followed that pretty good and would be glad to update us all tomorrow.

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 1:08:16 PM)
Everyone...I'm sorry but I have to call it a wrap right now. We got off to a terrible start thanks to my ISP and I hoped I recovered enough to make the chat worthwhile for you today. I will have a chance to meet Troy Paisley tomorrow at Marlington and I'm going to try to set up a meet and greet with Thoma eventhough they do not have school tomorrow. I appreciate the time everyone takes to read the chat or actually send in a question. Have a great day! Thank you again and smile!

Behind_Enemy_Lines (Feb 17, 2005 1:09:14 PM)
THANKS Gary, as always, great effort and great insight! Thanks..

GaryHousteau (Feb 17, 2005 1:09:14 PM)
My Pleasure....Thank you...Go Bucks!
