Chat Transcript - Duane Long

Duane Long stopped by Bucknuts premium chat today to talk about recruiting and next year's team. We have a transcript posted below.

Kirk (Feb 25, 2005 1:19:38 PM)
Hi Duane, thanks for stopping by today

Kirk (Feb 25, 2005 1:19:45 PM)
We'll get started with the first question...

Johnny_Buckeye (Feb 25, 2005 1:19:53 PM)
Duane... who do you see getting on the field first? Homan or Gibson (if he comes?)?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:20:35 PM)
I think Gibson is in better position because he is a Sam but Homan is more physically ready.

Kirk (Feb 25, 2005 1:20:57 PM)
buckgrad asks "Good afternoon, who would be your best guess for the first out-of-state fb recruit to commit for 2006?" and "Any word on how Chris Wells is doing in terms of recruiting for his future team?"

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:21:50 PM)
I am not up on the oos kids yet. I have not spoken to Wells about who has contacted.

DragonKnight (Feb 25, 2005 1:21:57 PM)
Two years ago Haw burst onto the scene. This year it was Daniels. Is there a super athletic kid this year that could really shoot up the charts this year?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:23:37 PM)
Troy Pascely is going to be a combine standout. I would say watch James Allison from Lima Senior. He is an LB. Ray Small is a name you know but I think he is vastly underrated. he has some Teddy Ballgame in him.

labsbeabmm (Feb 25, 2005 1:23:44 PM)
I find the metamorphasis of clarrett nauseating. Does he have a firm conviction in his body?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:24:15 PM)
Yes. Self-interest.

mulder (Feb 25, 2005 1:24:29 PM)
With C. Wells in the fold, are there any other RBs from Ohio that you go after? What about FBs or combo backs a la Brandon Joe?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:26:00 PM)
I think we need to watch Jacob Ramsey from Independence. Eric Haw told me about him 2 years ago. I think fans need to watch for Scott Webber from Canal Fulton NW. He is the FB I think we could see the Buckeyes go after him as a FB.

Johnny_Buckeye (Feb 25, 2005 1:26:10 PM)
What are your thoughts on Kirbus from St. Ignatius? Do you think he compares favorably with Hartline, Schlichter, or Davis? How would you rank these four based on what you have seen?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:27:17 PM)
Hartline is #1. Too many physical tools. I like Kirbus but I don't know if he is in there with the other three. Coach Ginn is raving about Arvelle Nelsons progress. Remember you heard it first here.

BuckeyeDave (Feb 25, 2005 1:27:25 PM)
Clarett seems to be saying all the right things now. But then he was saying all the right things a few years back too. (Being part of the Buckeye tradition, etc) Has he matured or is it all smoke? I guess time will tell....

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:28:28 PM)
Smoke so thick you can't see through it.

DragonKnight (Feb 25, 2005 1:28:32 PM)
Brown, Boren, and Smith are all rated extremely high by you. Why is Brown getting so many more offers than the other two? Would you rate Brown highest as an OL?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:30:05 PM)
I have Brown #2 overall in Ohio after Wells and I have had him #1 on my list since the end of football season.

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:30:32 PM)
#1 OL.

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:30:47 PM)
Even before his offer.

MFTodd (Feb 25, 2005 1:31:03 PM)
Do you think we could get a QB from OOS this year and not select one from in state?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:32:23 PM)
I need to see a QB better than what we have to select from. I thought Tebow was going to be so much better than anybody we had instate after seeing his numbers but after looking at his tape I need to see him at camp be better than Hartline.

BuckeyeDave (Feb 25, 2005 1:32:33 PM)
What is Ohio St's biggest weakness heading into next season? Lack of experience at RB? A hole to fill in the defensive secondary? Something else?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:34:25 PM)
I think the corner opposite Youboty is the most glaring need. I think RB is such an instinctive position. There are some things that most kids coming out of high school need to refine but running with the ball at this level is simply adjusting to the speed. I spoke to Eric Haw yesterday. He is 212 pounds, healthy and very confident.

Johnny_Buckeye (Feb 25, 2005 1:34:31 PM)
Who do you think will be the 2nd running back we take to fill the class? Do you think it will be Elzy (and we call it a day), or do you think we spend our time going after a LeSean McCoy or some other nationally ranked back?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:36:19 PM)
I think we get real picky. We may take another back but we may see Wells as a workhorse. I would not be surprised to see us pass.

fish61 (Feb 25, 2005 1:36:31 PM)
Duane, Do you see us taking shorter corners now that coach Tucker has moved on? I know most people see Ray Small as a db and he is shorter. Was it more Tucker that liked the taller corners or the whole coaching staff?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:37:53 PM)
I don't think we find out until later about this. It could be something Mel Tucker wanted, the big corners I mean, or it could be coach Tressels preference. We won't see until this summer at camp. I know most head coaches want to give position coaches the kind of players they want.

DragonKnight (Feb 25, 2005 1:38:15 PM)
Do you see any more in state offers before summer camps? Would you offer anyone else?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:39:46 PM)
No. I think we are done until camp. Junior performances have been evaluated. That is what the early offers were about. Those were the players that proved themselves worthy of an offer based on their junior years. If I was not going to offer a QB I would wait until camp.

BuckeyeDave (Feb 25, 2005 1:40:03 PM)
What second stringers do you expect to get signifcant PT in the OL and DL?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:41:25 PM)
I think Abdallah makes a mark. I think we see Gholston see a lot more playing time and Barrow. Person and Mitchum are no brainers. They play.

fotownbuckeye (Feb 25, 2005 1:41:40 PM)
...Since starting can be over-rated, who leads the team in carries next year? AP, EH or MW?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:42:57 PM)
I don't think we see any of them get the bulk of the carries until we get to the Big 10 season at least. I still think Haw is the man. He was used to 30 carry games. Never slowed and was never injured.

BuckeyeDave (Feb 25, 2005 1:43:06 PM)
Anybody in the GWOC good enough to get an offer?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:43:41 PM)
I can't think of anyone off the top of my head.

MFTodd (Feb 25, 2005 1:43:48 PM)
Are there any recruits out there in the state or OOS that OSU is just recruiting as an athlete?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:44:27 PM)
I would say Ray Small. I think Jacob Ballard is a big athlete. He could be a DE, DT, OT, TE.

DragonKnight (Feb 25, 2005 1:44:38 PM)
Who's your guess on starting CB for next year. Will EJ be out of the dog house and even contribute?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:46:12 PM)
I still need to see something but rah-rah and wishful thinking out of E.J. I am not confident he will be back. There is a report Whitner is getting reps at corner. He has the physical tools. If they can get him to settle down he is a natural.

MiniBus (Feb 25, 2005 1:46:22 PM)
Duane: Do you see any other OSU level prospects out of the Cincy area besides Brown and Smith, specifically any GMC guys?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:47:29 PM)
I can't really go that deep yet. I am sending out 48 tapes today (that is why I was late). It is just too early in the process to say.

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:47:45 PM)
Withrow has some serious talent.

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:51:27 PM)
Kallen Wade from Withrow could be an OSU caliber kid from Cincy. 6-5 210 DE.

MFTodd (Feb 25, 2005 1:48:59 PM)
Do we get a TE this year, if so how about the prospect from Mission Viejo?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:50:17 PM)
I don't think we need to leave Ohio for a TE. Ballard is a possible TE. Cumberland from Brookhaven. Chichester from Lakota West. They all have better size than the kid from California.

BuckeyeDave (Feb 25, 2005 1:50:21 PM)
Roy Hall...If he has a better than average year, he's likely gone isn't he?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:52:01 PM)
Roy Hall may not even be in the 2-deep. He was having a hard time hanging onto his reps last year. Gonzo took his #3 job and Devon Lyons has a year under his belt. He could be #5.

DragonKnight (Feb 25, 2005 1:52:07 PM)
There's been a lot of talk about Smith. Some say he's in more trouble than we've heard, some think he'll be back by the Miami game. You hear any rumblings? Who do you think is leading the team next year at QB?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:52:39 PM)
I think Smith's mess is behind him. I am not worried in the least.

BuckeyeDave (Feb 25, 2005 1:52:54 PM)
Do you think there will be any surprises for Buckeye fans during the NFL Draft? What are the odds that Ross, Joe or Hollins actually get drafted?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:53:25 PM)
Joe maybe. The others are FAs.

MFTodd (Feb 25, 2005 1:53:35 PM)
I am still most concerned about our kicking game this year with a new punter and placekicker. Given Tressel's conservative history does he have to really make this into an explosive offense?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:55:10 PM)
I think we can look back at the last 2 games and see that we may not be so conservative. I think the fact that Teddy Ballgame is an offensive player says we are seeing a coach who schemes to his talent. That said, I am scared out of my little mind about the kicking game.

Oxfordbuck (Feb 25, 2005 1:55:17 PM)
Duane, have you heard any news lately regarding Boren? Where he is leaning? Timing of decision?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:58:13 PM)
Lots of talk out there but I have not spoken to the family so I won't comment.

DragonKnight (Feb 25, 2005 1:58:28 PM)
Is Bollman still the main OL coach or is Peterson doing that mostly now? Has OSU finally put the dreadful side step, position blocking behind them?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 1:59:25 PM)
Bollman is the man. I think we saw a different line in the last 2 games. We came off the ball with some bad intentions.

DaytonBuckeye (Feb 25, 2005 1:59:33 PM)
I know Zwick had an outstanding game playing hurt against OSU and I am sure that is going to help him. But, looking at the two QB's it seems to me that the team reacted to Smith better than to Zwick on the field. Is there truth to that, or did it appear that way because of Smith's athletism?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:00:49 PM)
I think Smith is more a field general. There is more to being a QB than throwing the ball. There is little question the team responded better to Troy.

BuckeyeDave (Feb 25, 2005 2:01:49 PM)
Smith's break-out against scUM and Zwick's gutty Alamo Bowl performance makes it a tough choice for the coaching staff, doesn' it? Good trouble, I guess.

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:03:19 PM)
I don't think being gutty is going to play a part in it. You admire the gutty performance but he still didn't do anything that will put him back under center.

DragonKnight (Feb 25, 2005 2:03:26 PM)
Any prediction on the Texas game :)

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:05:39 PM)
No score prediction but I think we put any Heisman hype about Vincent Young on the back burner. Michigan couldn't defense a running QB to save their lives last year. We will make him throw and get 2 or 3 of them in a clear victory.

MFTodd (Feb 25, 2005 2:05:50 PM)
I think Teddy Ginn might be moved as a lockdown corner. Having two fabulous CB's makes those LB's and the SS position reign terror on the Big Ten. What are your thoughts?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:07:31 PM)
He won't. I have been saying since this time last year that he should be a defensive player. After his performance last year I am really baffled that fans think he will be moved. He is likely to play some defense but he will be primarily an offensive player.

BuckeyeDave (Feb 25, 2005 2:07:42 PM)
48 yds/punt! How long before Thoma gets a scholarship? Probably about 12 mins into the Texas game?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:07:47 PM)
Should be an offensive player I mean.

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:08:30 PM)
I really don't know what we are going to do about punter. They seem to feel confident and so far they have been right about the kicking game.

holytoledo (Feb 25, 2005 2:08:33 PM)
Is college recruiting a bigger guessing game than the pro draft? seems we see the pros make huge mistakes every year. Or is there just more room for error on the college level?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:09:26 PM)
25 scholarships versus less than 12 rounds in the draft. Numbers make a big difference.

BuckeyeDave (Feb 25, 2005 2:09:46 PM)
The Horseshoe is quickly becoming the place where opposing teams' Hypesman hopes go to die.

BuckeyeDave (Feb 25, 2005 2:10:34 PM)
How many Hypesman dreams have the Buckeyes shattered in the past few years?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:11:35 PM)
I can't come up with a number off the top of my head.

Kirk (Feb 25, 2005 2:12:28 PM)
Duane have you bought Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas yet?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:12:48 PM)
No but I have Vice City.

DragonKnight (Feb 25, 2005 2:12:49 PM)
Any news on Dukes?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:13:36 PM)
Nothing. With Helping Hand not coming around our Florida info has dried up.

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:14:41 PM)
I am very concerned about that. He looks like a better player than Holmes but I don't want him sporting the colors if he is guilty of that. Consesnual or not. That is a little girl.

DragonKnight (Feb 25, 2005 2:14:46 PM)
Who's the sleeper in the 2005 recruiting class for OSU?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:15:32 PM)
Ryan Williams.

MFTodd (Feb 25, 2005 2:16:59 PM)
Any new receivers we see in the mix this year on offense?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:19:26 PM)
I don't think so. We have the 3, Ginn, Holmes and Gonzo, plus Hall and Lyons fighting it out for the #4. I was so impressed with Dukes in high school but he has been distracted and not working out.

DaytonBuckeye (Feb 25, 2005 2:19:29 PM)
Duane, How is Josh Huston as a field goal kicker? And are you happy that he is coming back for one more year?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:21:13 PM)
He seemed to be a headcase last time we saw him before Nugent buried him. I am concerned. They don't seem to be.

Behind_Enemy_Lines (Feb 25, 2005 2:21:16 PM)
Hello Duane, Looking to know what players up here you have your eye(s) on, and their schools? (yes, I live behind enemy lines but that doesn't mean I have gotten to get used to the smell) :-) Who are you watching up here in Michican't?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:22:37 PM)
I am still looking at Ohio kids. I am not even close to getting into the oos kids.

buckgrad (Feb 25, 2005 2:22:42 PM)
Jamario claims to have run a 4.21 forty!! Is this guy going to be Ted Ginn Jr. all over again? Gotta play this guy on offense too?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:23:48 PM)
He is a defensive player like Whitner. He doesn't have the vision or skills of Ginn.

buckmark (Feb 25, 2005 2:24:00 PM)
Duane... How far behind the first tier of Ohio linemen (Brown, Boren, Smith) is the second tier (Tilley, Palmer, etc,) and what order would you put them in?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:24:39 PM)
You are going to have to wait until Ohio High comes out for that.

MFTodd (Feb 25, 2005 2:24:43 PM)
With our depth at wide receiver, do we simply hold out for the best available in the country this year if we take one? My guess is Holmes will be gone after this year

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:25:20 PM)
I think we hold out for something special. We just don't need receivers.

holytoledo (Feb 25, 2005 2:25:22 PM)
Is Snyder up to the task of leading a National championship level defense? Last year seemed such a learning process for him.

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:27:29 PM)
If you asked me that before Michigan I likely would have said no. I was ready to pull my hair out about the defense. Why go after all these great ahtletes and have them sitting on their heels???!!!! We saw a completely different mindset against Michigan and the bowl game. I think we could see something special with this defense if we find another corner and Snyder continues what he started in the last 2 games.

MFTodd (Feb 25, 2005 2:27:35 PM)
how many cb's do we need or get this year?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:29:30 PM)
I don't know if we need bodies. We are so young. There is talent and there are enough kids there. It is a matter of the ones we have stepping up. I see no more than 2. If we take more it is either great news or really bad news. It means we are in on some great prospects or the staff is not happy about how the current crop is developing.

Kirk (Feb 25, 2005 2:29:34 PM)
Duane has to log off now, so we'll make this the last question today:

buckgrad (Feb 25, 2005 2:29:36 PM)
Is this the fastest Buckeye team, top to bottom, you've seen?

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:30:12 PM)
It is one of the fastest if not the fastest.

Kirk (Feb 25, 2005 2:31:44 PM)
Ok everyone - thanks for stopping by today. We'll get a transcript posted this afternoon..

Duane (Feb 25, 2005 2:31:48 PM)
Corner and RB, Buckeye fans. We will be a lot better on the OL and either QB can get it done. Get your tickets early. I think it could be one great ride. See you all on the boards!!!
