Helwagen Chat: March 11 Archive

Here are excerpts from Friday's Chat session with Bucknuts.com managing editor Steve Helwagen. He conducts these Chat sessions each week for Bucknuts.com subscribers. Check out our special Chat Monday at 2 p.m. with OSU captain Dustin Fox.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 11, 2005 2:04:09 PM)
So AJ Hawk's time in the 40 rivalled Maurice Hall's time...any chance we'll see Hawk line up at RB next season? (chuckle)

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:06:54 PM)
Dave on Hawk, I don't know about TB, but this guy is a football player. Watching the Michigan game, he was on that day. Wow.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 11, 2005 2:05:08 PM)
Aaron Brown looks to be collecting offers from all over the country. Whats the word?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:07:37 PM)
Dave on Aaron Brown, Duane Long loves Aaron Brown. He said he will be promoting him in the Scout system as one of the top 10 OL in the country. The offers say people like him, obviously.

buckgrad (Mar 11, 2005 2:07:50 PM)
which of the three DEs from the 05 class will see some time on defense this year, if any?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:08:43 PM)
I think Doug Worthington will be closest this year. Lawrence Wilson could also get a strong look. Ryan Williams will likely RS and take a year to develop. If he packs it on, he could be another Penton who can play any of the 4 positons when called upon, possibly.

redondo (Mar 11, 2005 2:08:49 PM)
Hi Steve - Regarding the new AD, or really, the formerly open AD position, could you discuss it for us please in light of Archie and his prospective candidacy. Was he not interested, or was there somthing(s) about his resume and/or experience that did not warrant really serious consideration forthe post? Thank you.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:09:35 PM)
I think when Archie agreed to be on the committee that said it all. He is happy and content as the alumni association head. He has seen how Geiger was put through the ringer. You would not wish that on your worst enemy. Now ...

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:10:03 PM)
... there were also rumblings that some folks wanted to go through the process, then draft Archie to take the job. But it never came to that, obviously.

rbuck (Mar 11, 2005 2:10:08 PM)
Steve, What is the feel for the type of penalties the NCAA is going to lay down on the FB and BB programs? Thanks.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:11:40 PM)
Geez, anybody who says they know is probably just guessing. But my feel is the football program will be exonerated (again). Basketball will be sentenced to time served and may have to pay back some NCAA money and also lose a scholarship for a year or 2. I can't see it going beyond that.

buckgrad (Mar 11, 2005 2:11:45 PM)
Any word on academic issues? Maupin and any others out there that may be a problem?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:12:55 PM)
I think Maupin and E.J. Underwood are on the outside looking in. I don't look for either to play in 2005 (barring some type of miracle) and maybe never again at OSU. That's too bad because Underwood would have a fresh start with the new DBs coach. Maupin could be a monster, too, at DT if he was focused. Nobody else that I'm aware of.

cderekw (Mar 11, 2005 2:13:04 PM)
the Big 3 instate o-lineman, any chance one or more of these guys commit before their sr season starts or will they enjoy the free trips and wait.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:13:51 PM)
I sense that Boren has to go through the process with Michigan (camp and maybe a game visit or something) because with his dad a former player there they have to pay the proper respect. I would not call him a slam dunk for OSU, but I think it looks good ...

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:14:36 PM)
Brown may decide with so many good schools to look around some. Smith I feel ultimately will end up at OSU and that may happen before the rest. There is some sentiment from that camp as well that he should look around, too.

redondo (Mar 11, 2005 2:14:52 PM)
Hi Steve - In your Buckeye Grove article you laid out a comprehensive agenda for the new AD. Any idea what was given particular emphasis by president Holbrook as THE item she wants him to resolve? Thank you.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:15:47 PM)
Keep Ohio State off SportsCenter for the wrong reasons. That encompasses academics and NCAA violations and off-the-field problems. I think that would make her happiest .. if OSU athletics would return to their proper place within the university climate.

grimes (Mar 11, 2005 2:15:54 PM)
Has ther been any more interesting news out of winter conditioning? An initial flurry then very little.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:16:27 PM)
It's all closed, so I don't go. They let us watch one day and I was in Florida that week and missed it. Spring ball will be here in 3 weeks. Yippee.

redondo (Mar 11, 2005 2:16:38 PM)
Hi Steve - Did the Dukes situation ever get resolved? If so, what was it? Thank you.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:17:28 PM)
Have not heard of a resolution. I think HH said there was a movement to get a settlement as a misdemeanor of some sort, slap on the wrist likely. But I have heard or seen nothing. You know the staff wants him back for spring quarter and ball, if it's doable.

Turd (Mar 11, 2005 2:17:42 PM)
steve thanks for hosting the chat...the fellas on the board have been giving me a hard time about my 5.3 mark in the 40 at the beat mo challenge...taking into consiteration the facts that i laid out in my post lie at the combine the time starts off the players first movement and not some guy yelling across the gym when to go and bad shoes and apparel. my time wasn't too bad was it? also been catching crap for the photo in my sig, but come on right, its sexy ;)

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:18:40 PM)
Your 5.3 is probably better than anything I could run today. You crack me up.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 11, 2005 2:18:47 PM)
Did Santonio Holmes participate in the Ohio St Pro Day? If so, what was his time in the 40?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:19:13 PM)
I did not hear that Holmes participated. I think that's for guys who will be seniors. I can't definitively say, but that was my sense.

buckgrad (Mar 11, 2005 2:19:22 PM)
Steve, class of '03 is not panning out too well! Hiley, Guilford, Irizary, Maupin, Smith, Frost cant find a position, Jordan loses a year to injury. Wow what bad luck. This has got to hurt the program soon, right?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:21:03 PM)
It does hurt. OSU has had some lean seasons when groups like that come to the end and there are no seniors to provide leadership. I think they will weather the storm this year, but obviously they need some guys to step up in 2006 and '07.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 11, 2005 2:21:07 PM)
Is it true that Ohio St did not allow clarett to participate in its Pro Day? If so, whats your opinion on that?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:22:25 PM)
I'm not sure we ever clarified what the communication process was on that. As I recall, Clarett let it drop in an NFL TV interview, then OSU pretty much said he would not be working out there. There was an interview with his lawyer where they said Steve Snapp was the one who told them he would not be welcome. Perhaps he was operating on instructions from Tressel and/or Geiger ...

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:24:38 PM)
My feeling is they are correct in allowing THEIR guys to work out for NFL scouts. Clarett stopped being one of THEIR guys when he threw Tressel and the university under the bus. He has a lot of fences to mend, I feel, if he ever wants to be accepted there again. This is an issue between he and Tressel. Tressel is a benevolent man, but Maurice has done nothing to deserve ANY kind of consideration from Ohio State. Like they said on Tilt last night, "You can't sleep with the enemy, then come smoke my cigar." ...

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:26:16 PM)
And moreover, his presence would have created a media circus and maybe ruined things for people like Fox, Fraser, Joe, Nugent, who should not have had to share the spotlight with someone like Maurice. That's my long form answer, but that's how I feel. Tressel would have looked like a saint if he had let Maurice work out. But he doesn't come off bad in any way by denying him, either.

BucksDominate (Mar 11, 2005 2:26:22 PM)
Steve, There is a thread about Ginn on Defense and people are split on that. What is your feeling OSU should do with Ginn. My choice, let him play and don't worry about him getting tired. I say let him be a lock down corner, play special teams, and put him in on offense like Gamble.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:28:26 PM)
They need to prepare a number of people to be ready to play. Ginn is adding 5-10 pounds of strength this year so he can take the pounding of playing both ways. You know he and his dad want to have a dual role ... and flourish in it as well. That said, if he doesn't score 15 TDs this year, some heads should roll (just kidding, of course). Obviously, the rumor is that Whitner will rep at corner some this spring. My feeling is he and Whitner could split time at corner and that would be a good solution. Like they did with Gamble, maybe they use Ginn in special defensive situations when they know the opponent is passing and they have to lock somebody down.

grimes (Mar 11, 2005 2:28:56 PM)
I hope you sent a copy of your Buckeye grove to the new AD. I thought it was very well done. In fact can you give him a complimentary subscription to Bucknuts so he can get a feel for the buckeye street vibe? Wait thats probably an NCAA viol.ation.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:29:29 PM)
We will see about getting him a copy. We intend to open a good relationship with the new AD. Thanks for the suggestion.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 11, 2005 2:29:35 PM)
Do you ever publish article sent in by subscribers? What would the guidelines be?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:31:51 PM)
Sure, the article would need to be of publication quality and be something that would be interesting to our subscribers. We would reserve the right to edit submissions for Associated Press style (abbreviations, punctuation, grammer, etc.). We can continue that dialogue offline. I can be EZBoxed on the message board with any ideas, etc.

osudrummer (Mar 11, 2005 2:32:05 PM)
do we have a chance to pluck anyone out of that state up north this year?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:35:59 PM)
That is a good question. I don't see anybody in Scout's database from Michigan, except for one QB, that is listing OSU. So I'd say no.

osudrummer (Mar 11, 2005 2:36:04 PM)
is there any realistic chance we land cook or any of the other big three away from wake or some of the other big names?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:37:52 PM)
Yes, I like Ohio State's chances with Cook. Remember, Sullinger plays the three now. He'll be gone in 2 years when Cook would be a freshman. So the opportunity to play right away would be there. Beyond that, Lighty's injury may cloud his status. Now he'll see who TRULY wants him by the way they step up (or don't) after the injury. But Cook, to me, could be the Pied Piper. Maybe he would sway Conley and get some of the other top Ohio guys in here with him.

BucksDominate (Mar 11, 2005 2:38:01 PM)
Steve, Do you feel we could lose Mark Snyder to Marshall?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:39:18 PM)
He is a Marshall alum and he is a coordinator at a Big Ten school. Marshall is moving from MAC to C-USA. I think it's a possibility. I know he was considered for some other recent MAC openings. I think Mark would like to be a head coach, but he also knows how good he has it at Ohio State.

buckgrad (Mar 11, 2005 2:39:24 PM)
I get the feeling people are overlooking Maurice Wells next year, you dont rush for 3000yds in FL every year. Whats your feeling on Maurice Wells?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:40:22 PM)
Well, he will get reps by default as the third RB starting out. But if Pittman or Haw falter or get hurt, he could be thrust into the spotlight immediately, kind of how Mike Hart was for UM. I am excited to get Wells on campus and see what happens.

buckgrad (Mar 11, 2005 2:40:27 PM)
Tilt, what a great show! Cant wait for season finale Sun.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:42:09 PM)
Me too. Matador killed his buddy in cold blood. You could see that coming from 10 miles down the track. They just aired a commercial where it's he and Eddie going head to head for the bracelet. Will be interesting to see who wins that. In a perfect world, Eddie wins and they arrest Matador on camera after the finals. But how does Eddie winning set the show up for next year, if it comes back?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:42:19 PM)
What do you think of Matador's daughter? Wow.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:42:25 PM)
OK, back to the countdown ...

redondo (Mar 11, 2005 2:42:46 PM)
Hi Steve - Any chance Bucknuts could sit down for an interview with the new AD? That would be super. Thank you.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:43:39 PM)
We inquired about that. We wanted to fly to Arizona and sit down with him later this month. But they want everybody to wait until he comes back here, before or after his April 15 start date. He said he is accessible. I'm sure we will all be putting that statement to the test.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:44:19 PM)
In a way, I understand. I'm sure Arizona State doesn't want a parade of Ohio media types on their campus talking to the guy who's leaving. That's not the right respect for that program.

redondo (Mar 11, 2005 2:44:30 PM)
Hi Steve - Could you pull outthe crystal ball and predict tonight's outcome for the basket-Bucks vs. Wiscky. Will they play another game or does the clock strike midnight? Thank you.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:46:51 PM)
In the Buckeye Grove, I picked all 3 winners yesterday. Today I had Illinois by 16 (won by 18, I believe), Indiana by 4 over Minn., MSU by 8 over Iowa and OSU by 2 over Wisconsin. Digger Phelps thinks Ohio State is the team to watch because OSU is treating this like their NCAA ...

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:47:48 PM)
Obviously, their treatment of yesterday's game kind of belies that statement. But if they come out ready and energetic today they have a shot. I'll stick with my pick, but OSU has to find a way to defend Wilkinson and Tucker. They had no answers for Claxton and Parker yesterday ...

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:49:14 PM)
I loved Matta's response from a Wisconsin reporter who asked how OSU would beat them after losing twice in the RS. Matta smiled and said, "I haven't figured them out yet." It was kind of the evil scientist answer. Here's the guy who came up with a way to humiliate St. Joe's last year and beat Illinois this year. The obvious inference from the statement was: "I haven't figured them out yet ... but I will." You have to like his confidence (and competence).

redondo (Mar 11, 2005 2:49:34 PM)
Hi Steve - IMO, there was an interesting thread going on the premium board about Cosch Tressel being Andy Geiger's guy and not necessarily new AD's James guy. Speculation existed about perhaps Coach Tressel being on some sort of "shorter leash". Do you sense any sort of trepidation being expressed by the subordinates along these lines? Thank you.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:51:00 PM)
No, Coach Tressel attended the press conference and seems pleased with this selection. I have to believe they are acquainted from the time when they were both ADs a few short years ago. Look, Jim Tressel has won an NC and is 3-1 against Michigan and 3-1 in bowl games. It would take something of major proportions to get him out of that job. He isn't going anywhere.

osudrummer (Mar 11, 2005 2:51:15 PM)
whats your best prediction for all-americans next year. personally, i see hawk, ginn, carpenter, salley, and maybe holmes to be somewhere on the lists

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:51:23 PM)
All-Americans?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:52:55 PM)
Hawk will repeat on the first team with another year like that. Ginn will be on there as a return guy, maybe as a receiver. Carpenter may get a second-team nod (hard to put 2 LBs from the same team on first team A-A). Salley and Holmes and Pitcock have to also be in this discussion. And Youboty. Don't sleep on him. I think he is becoming one of the best corners in college football right before our very eyes. That kid is a football player.

osudrummer (Mar 11, 2005 2:53:07 PM)
i cant find a whole in this team? except maybe special teams.. are there any holes im missing?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:54:08 PM)
Punter and kicker are definitely troubling. The OL came on late in the year, they need to continue that progress. They need people to step up at TB and at DE. They fill those two positions and they could be set.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:54:52 PM)
I want to say I think Trapasso could be a keeper at punter. He boomed the ball in warmups when I watched him. We need to see how he reacts to punting in the games. Tom Tupa dropped his first snap in 84 but turned out pretty good.

BucksDominate (Mar 11, 2005 2:55:36 PM)
Steve, How are our Lines going to be this year? The Oline and the Dline. Do you feel they could be the strength of our team? I think our Linebackers could be the strength of our defense but will the Dline be able to hold their own to free our Linebackers up and will the Oline be strong this year?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 2:58:08 PM)
The OL was really making great strides as the season ended. They dominated against Michigan, though I'm not impressed with UM's D-line. As I said, they need to keep working and get even better. The D-line looks real good with Kudla at end and Pitcock and Green in the middle. But they need Richardson or somebody to take over at end. That is critical. Given the teams they will face that throw the ball and have agile QBs (Young, Robinson at PSU, Tate, Basanez, etc.) the ends must be pass rushers and also strong on contain. Nobody has shown they are a complete player yet.

osudrummer (Mar 11, 2005 2:58:24 PM)
it is imperitive to get their big guys in foul trouble... drive the lane JJ!!!!! your thoughts on who will be the difference maker tonight in the buckeye victory

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:00:00 PM)
Dials had 15 and 20 in the 2 games, so let's start there. He usually follows poor games with great ones. You have to hope he does that. Syl had 14 at Madison and was 3 of 12 and 0 of 7 on treys in that terrible home loss. As I recall, he had a ton of great looks and just could not get anything to go. They need those two to fill it up tonight ...

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:01:33 PM)
I also worry about Stockman. After jacking 20 shots last night, you wonder if he will try and take them on his back again. He always seems one game away from a disastrous 4 of 17 night. But he got it done last night. Agreed on Sullinger, I think if he can get to 10 points OSU has a chance.

BucksDominate (Mar 11, 2005 3:01:43 PM)
Steve, Question about TD last night. I didn't see the game but I saw TD didn't have a very good game as far as points scored and shooting %. Was Penn State just double and triple teaming him or was he just off? I saw an article suggesting that Penn State focused on shutting down TD. Probably why TS was able to catch on fire, am I correct on this?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:04:39 PM)
He was 1 of 6. Aaron Johnson is a bad match-up for him, for starters. TD was never comfortable on the block. Johnson rooted him out of his favorite spots. And, yes, PSU ran a variety of zone looks in the first half that made it impossible to put the ball into him. OSU had to resort to threes, which they hit, or they would have lost by 15. That was a great comeback. Remember, in the first PSU game in Columbus Johnson held Dials to 5 points. Stockman picked the right game to come out of his funk. You hope he can carry that over and that Dials can get some things done inside tonight.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:05:19 PM)
I did not understand why PSU abandoned the zone in the second half. It helped them build the lead. Plus, it made OSU take time off the clock.

grimes (Mar 11, 2005 3:05:31 PM)
If Snyder does move on is there a logical successor in the pipeline? Tress seems to like to promote from within.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:06:54 PM)
Probably not in-house, unless Heacock makes a play for it. Fickell is probably too young to take that step at OhioState. Maybe within 2-3 years. I think he is one of the bright young stars (as a coach and recruiter). This is where losing Tucker really hurts. My feeling is JT would go outside the staff if this comes to pass. This is something we'll need to monitor.

grimes (Mar 11, 2005 3:07:12 PM)
I found it very disturbing during the scuM game that the Buckeyes could not seem to punch it into the endzone on a couple occations yet over all they played well in the game. Do you think this was play calling or good guess on the Defense or lack of execution. I bet that got a lot of film review by the coaches.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:09:59 PM)
As I did this week's Buckeye Grove, I went through those sequences in the second quarter. Yes, that is troubling. Remember, on the 99-yard drive, they did punch it in on third-and-1 from the 2 with Smith on the keeper. Give Michigan some credit. They made some plays. Their DT Watson blew up one of the running plays. OSU tried to power Joe at them to no avail. Smith and Ross botched a handoff and fumbled it. OSU even tried Dionte Johnson and a run and also threw a pass to him, but could not get it in. This is where maybe they missed a Jenkins who could go get a jump ball. And Marlin Jackson made a great cover play batting the fourth-down pass away from Holmes. But 1 TD in 3 trips inside the 5 in that quarter is not acceptable.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 11, 2005 3:10:28 PM)
TB has got to be a glaring hole on the Ohio St team. We haven't had a "go-to" TB in 2 years...

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:10:58 PM)
It is. Neither guy is a proven 23-carry-a-game guy. Huge gaping hole until one of them proves that. Agreed, it's been a problem since Reecie left.

buckgrad (Mar 11, 2005 3:11:06 PM)
Matadors Daughter, how about Miami, Wow! Why are the buckeyes looking for another rb in this class? That could possibly scare of c. wells, that is my thought anyways.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:11:23 PM)
Yes, Miami, very impressive. Do she and Eddie hook up? Hmmm. (ha ha)

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:11:55 PM)
No, I think Wells understands he is option one. The next RB they get will be to add depth. That will be apparent, my feeling.

BucksDominate (Mar 11, 2005 3:12:03 PM)
Steve, How do you feel about Troy Smith? Have you talked with him personally and does he feel very very bad about what he did? Does he seem very determined to make amends with the team and fans by working his way back and proving that he is sorry by being a leader and leading OSU to wins?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:16:07 PM)
No, I was on vacation in Fla. the week they did the 6 a.m. workout and he was made available. I really like Troy Smith. He has generally been great to work with from a media standpoint and his teammates are 150 percent behind him (provided he doesn't betray their trust another time ... the old fool me once, fool me twice thing). The vibe I get is he is mortified he embarrassed himself, OSU, Ginn Sr., Glenville, his family. That embarrassment will hopefully lead him to stay on the straight and narrow. That's just going to be seen on the test of time. Tressel will handle this situation as he always does and will make the right decisions for the GOOD of the TEAM.

buckgrad (Mar 11, 2005 3:19:28 PM)
Steve, why dont the bucks just end the waiting game and offer M. hartline, you know its going to happen eventually. He is clearly the best qb we can realistically get.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:20:34 PM)
No urgency to do that. Things will happen in the proper progression. They want all of the data before they make a decision. They don't want to miss on anybody. Let the process run its course. I imagine after their camp they will know definitively what way they want to go. It is rare for QBs to get offered anywhere before the camp season.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:20:58 PM)
That's what won Quinn for ND because they stuck their neck out before OSU and others, as I recall.

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:21:11 PM)
Anything else?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:21:31 PM)
Enjoy the game tonight. I assume it will be on Channel 10 in Cols. Not sure about anywhere else.

BucksDominate (Mar 11, 2005 3:21:36 PM)
How Will ND effect recruiting with Weis?

SteveHelwagen (Mar 11, 2005 3:22:33 PM)
He brings a name as a quality pro assistant coach. He will bleed for ND and put everything he has into it. He has a great staff with Cutcliffe and the others who know the drill as college coaches. Time will tell, but I imagine once he puts his machine in motion they will do well.
