March 24 Chat Transcript - Gary Housteau

Gary Housteau stopped by club chat today and gave us a scoop on what positions Ted Ginn will play this year as well as some thoughts on recruiting and the NCAA investigations at OSU. Read on for a transacript.

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:05:13 PM)
Hello all you Bucknuts! Spring ball is right around the corner and recruiting is in season all year round. I think we're all set to take your questions so fire away if and when you have any. Can you read me know?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:06:14 PM)

rbuck (Mar 24, 2005 1:07:36 PM)
Gary, Do you see any scenario where TGII is playing 75% of both offensive and defensive plays? Is that possible?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:09:17 PM)
I just spoke with TGSr. and he seems to believe that his son will be used full time as a receiver and initially he will be a part-time corner only in the red Chris Gamble was. I'm sure his ability will shine through there like it did with Gamble.

rbuck (Mar 24, 2005 1:13:16 PM)
Any word on Albert Dukes? I think it was Dustin Fox's chat where he said that Albert has the makings of being a better player than Santanio?? That's large.

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:13:16 PM)
Hi rbuck ...thanks for getting the chat started off with your previous question about TGII...about Dukes...I don't have any updated information on him but it was indeed great to hear Dustin speak so highly of him. Let's hope he can right the ship and get back to Columbus. When I was in Hershey for the addition to being very impressed with Chad Henne, and look how he panned out, I was equally impressed with Devon Lyons. His ability to run with the ball after the catch is very impressive and his 30-plus yard average in high school is a testament to that ability. I'm all for Lyons stepping up big next season. It would be nice if Dukes is able to contribute in the fall but it's not looking possible at this time.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 24, 2005 1:17:57 PM)
I see clarett is going to get an NFL work out at Garfield and that Akron and YSU turned him down, in addition to Ohio St. How do you project him in the draft?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:17:57 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave, I don't know if I'll be allowed to attend but I'll have my sources there if not. I see him slipping into the second day, possibly the sixth or seventh round. Despite his baggage, there's still a ton of potential to be harnessed. It's ironic that Gafield is the school where Chris Wells hails from. Seeing Clarett in his current situation may actually benefit Wells when he can see how far from grace Clarett has fallen.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 24, 2005 1:20:29 PM)
Going back to LOI day in February..were there any major surprises? (Besides Gwaltney.) Anybody that did not sign that we really expected to be in the Scarlet and Gray nex season?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:20:30 PM)
The pleasant surprise was landing Lawrence Wilson on signing day. I think all the drama by that time, other than Wilson, was over by signing day. And again by not signing Gwaltney, that opened the door to landing Wells next season.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 24, 2005 1:23:13 PM)
Any big changes at Bucknuts on the horizon?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:23:13 PM)
I know Steve is working hard every day to continually improve our product that we offer to Ohio State fans. I think eventually we will see more quality local video, not necessarily scout per say, but stuff like Dave Berk is doing over at J.J. Huddle. But Steve is the guy to ask that question.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 24, 2005 1:25:41 PM)
Gary - Wells vs Gwaltney: Win by losing? Addition by subtraction?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:25:42 PM)
It looks like it's just me and you today BuckeyeDave...I'm sure we all would have been happy to get Gwaltney but I'm ecstatic about getting Wells. I've seen him play more than a few games already over the past two seasons and I like what I see. Plus he's a top-notch kid off the field. Always smiling and keeping it real. And he's got a great support system around him. He's your Mr. Football next year in a hotly contested race.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 24, 2005 1:29:33 PM)
Gary - I've thought for a long time that the person clarett should really be listening to is Caoch McDaniel. Its good to see him suypporting a former player.

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:29:33 PM)
I know a couple of people that could really have a positive influence on Clarett, McDaniels is one, if he listened to them instead of the people he has chosen. For whatever reason, however, everything went sour and he has no one to blame for it but himself. He could have been Mr. Buckeye by now if he just did what he should have done. I've said it before, It's sad, really sad.

rbuck (Mar 24, 2005 1:32:03 PM)
Gary, I'm here too. Who do we get from the Glenville Pipeline next year?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:32:03 PM)
Ginn Sr. can't speak highly enough of Bryant Browning. He said he would be the ultimate Buckeye and he's a dream type of kid to coach and he would love to be a Buckeye. We might not get Browning but I think we will get Robert Rose and Ray Small. That will probably be the extent of it. However Royce Adams, the transfer in from St. Ed's is drawing a lot of attention and he will be a two-way player for the Tarblooders next year. And Ginn really likes the upside of his QB Arvell Nelson as well.

JohnnyBuckeye (Mar 24, 2005 1:33:04 PM)
Honest opinion.... Aaron Brown to OSU or not???

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:33:04 PM) the end...Yes. But he's not a lock from what I've been told by a credible source. And my source isn't Chris Pool by the way.

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:37:46 PM)
RockyMntBuck please resend your question on Brown...I was ready to send the answer and I hit the wrong key by accident and it disappeared.

cliffosu (Mar 24, 2005 1:39:47 PM)
Gary, now that Cook has committed. Do you think Conley seriously considers tOSU. Or is wake forest that far ahead.

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:39:47 PM)
Hi cliffosu...I'm not a basketball guy but I really enjoyed the semifinal games I was at this past weekend. It sounds like Conley was really surprised that Cook committed without speaking with him first. It sounds like Conley is really into Wake Forest but it will be interesting to see if Cook can help recruit him to OSU now. I think we have a shot. With Matta, all things are possible now.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 24, 2005 1:40:39 PM)
Women's Basketball - How far are they likely to go in the tournament?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:40:39 PM)
All the way...why not?

Guest (Mar 24, 2005 1:43:18 PM)
Gary, i know there were some rumors floating around the board that Pitmann came into 6 am workouts out of shape and with a bad attitude. Have you heard any rumblings around campus about this? We're already so thin at the position, and not having Tony in the right mindset going into the spring game would definatley hurt.

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:43:18 PM)
Wolfbuddy asks about Pittman's mindset....I know Pittman is a pretty proud guy and will be ready to compete in the spring for this opportunity. I haven't heard nothing really negative about Pittman but I have heard a lot of positives about Erik Haw from people who know and people who have been at practices. I think Pittman will be ready to compete but I know that Haw will be ready to compete.

crazynuts (Mar 24, 2005 1:48:43 PM)
Gary, I have been reading up on some of the "better" TE's around the state and country. It seems like we have offered a few. How do we get a buzz going and close on these kids. Bring back the power I, and OSU football glory!!!

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:48:43 PM)
Hi crazynuts...start with Jeff Cumberland... He wants to be a wideout...grades could be a problem ...and let's just say that OSU is not his favorite school. I don't know much about the tight end from Mission Viejo other than he's from Ohio and he would like to play for OSU if it worked Ryan Williams. I do know that Roy Hall is really looking forward to the opportunity he is going to have at tight end and if he pans out there this spring we won't have an urgent need to go get a big time tight end. And a healthy Marcel Frost is hungry to perform at that position as well. Troy Smith thinks Frost could be the best of them all. Smile.

rbuck (Mar 24, 2005 1:49:53 PM)
Do you see Marcel Frost making a contribution next year?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:49:53 PM)
Been hearing a lot of good things from people who know about Marcel Frost. Very good things. Hamby, Hall, Frost and Nicol could give us a very, very formidable tight end corps.

cliffosu (Mar 24, 2005 1:51:29 PM)
Gary, does Lawrence Wilson get a better look at tight end or d-end this year. Where do you think he will be in the next couple of years.

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:51:29 PM)
I think Wilson has too much athletic ability not to play at defensive end. And he will only get better and better as his learns how good he can actually be. He has a ton of natural ability. His best football is ahead of him and it's going to be on the defensive side, from what I've seen of him.

wolfbuddy (Mar 24, 2005 1:53:25 PM)
how's D'Andrea been coming along with his rehab? When do we hear word on his eligibility?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:53:25 PM)
D'Andrea is taking care of business with his rehab and is thought so highly of by the coaching staff...if he can just stay healthy. I believe his extra year of eligibility won't even be an issue until after next season. He's like an extra bonus gift under the xmas tree. He can still play no doubt.

Seabus (Mar 24, 2005 1:56:42 PM)
Late to join, sorry Gary. Any further word on the DB Coleman who received an offer recently? Do you have an opinion on his abilities, his likelyhood to be a Buckeye?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:56:42 PM)
Hi seabus... I have nothing further to offer on Coleman at this time other than to say that I have a lot more players to see than I was originally planning. There seems to be more players emerging in the southern part of the state than we normally have so that's a good thing.

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 1:59:51 PM)
I spoke with Justin Boren today for an update and he told me that he is going to a spring practice tomorrow up at Michigan with his dad. Good for him. He has 14 offers in hand now with LSU and Florida being the two latest. But he should be a Buckeye by the summer. Unlike Brown, Boren is not someone that we have to worry about. Brown, from what I've been told, isn't the lock that he is being portrayed to be. It's an open battle for him. And Chris Pool isn't even my source on that so he sort of confirms what I was told.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 24, 2005 2:03:51 PM)
Men's Basketball - Cook's commit was a real shot in the arm for the program and a great get for Matta. Whats your EARLY prediction for next season?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 2:03:51 PM)
Bigger and better things for the Buckeye boys hoop team. I really, really like Jon Diebler from Upper Sandusky, just a sophomore. Dallas Lauderdale is another top sophomore we need to keep an eye on and an offer extended. David Lighty should be a Buckeye in the future, despite the injury. Raymar Morgan would look good in scarlet and gray colors. Nate Davis would look good on the hoop team if he doesn't go the football route. There's so much good young talent in Ohio. And I didn't even mention Mayo and company from North College Hill. What a talent pool Matta potentially has to pull from.

Seabus (Mar 24, 2005 2:07:27 PM)
Gary, I know you are around the GlenOak program some, what's your view on Ryan Palmer?? I loved his video. Do you see him getting the Buckeye offer?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 2:07:27 PM)
I like Palmer a lot and I hope to see him improve to a new level this year. I would like to see him once or twice this year before I'm sold on him but I love his size and potential. He's a guard that's likely to be a tackle at the next level. Most of the tackles that we're in on are tackles that are going to be guards at the next level. People keep telling me about Tilley and I look forward to seeing him, but I like Browning and Palmer because I've seen them play and I like what I've seen. I think OSU will want to see Palmer a few games on tape this year before they decide.

cliffosu (Mar 24, 2005 2:09:30 PM)
Being that Maurice Wells was supposed to save our backfield next year. I don't hear much about him any more. The coaches were very high on him. What do you think he can offer the bucks next year when he finally gets here. I just can't understand why he disappeared from everybody's list to compete for the TB position.

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 2:09:30 PM)
When someone like Bill Conley thinks so high of a player as he does of Maurice Wells, I have to yield to his opinion no question. I wasn't extremely expressed with what I saw of him in San Antonio but he didn't have much, hardly any, of a chance to show what he could do. Only two carries in the game. He's got a great attitude I discovered from talking with him and is eager to get here and prove himself. We shall see.

cliffosu (Mar 24, 2005 2:13:30 PM)
Gary, I live in Florida and am constantly hearing from all my friends who are not Ohio State lovers, that we are going on probation. I don't believe this will happen, but is there any time soon that an announcement will be made as to results of the investigation. I'm looking forward to the end of all the drama.

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 2:13:30 PM)
From what I've been told, we're likely to be issued a clean bill of health by the NCAA after a very thorough and I mean thorough investigation. They're likely to commend Ohio State on the programs that they have in place. So forget about the football probation. The NCAA has had their atty's here for months and they're likely to not come up with any infractions to speak of. Basketball might be another story .

Guest (Mar 24, 2005 2:15:48 PM)
Gary. Barring more sanctions what do you see the basketball doing as far as recruits. With Daequan on board do you feel as though we will go strong with the current JR class?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 2:15:48 PM)
TampaBuckeye asks about being strong with recruiting in the junior class not that Cook is on board...well I don't know for sure but it's a great start. Lighty would help the momentum and then Conley would be another huge pickup. I think we're in store for a really solid recruiting class. I'm starting to really like this basketball recruiting thing.

rbuck (Mar 24, 2005 2:17:46 PM)
Do you think Sian Cotton will get many minutes next year?

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 2:17:46 PM)
To be honest...I've heard some good things and some bad things about Cotton this offseason. Don't know what direction he will go in but he could add a great deal to our depth on the D-line next year. Especially with Maupin's situation, we could use Cotton to step it up a notch.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 24, 2005 2:19:11 PM)
Is there a Bucknuts story about the NCAA investigation of Ohio St in the works? Do you get many of the details or facts surrounding the investigation? I'd like to read some of the specific allegations and the NCAA findings.

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 2:19:11 PM)
Not that I'm aware of but I have spoken to a few people off the record about some of the things that have been going on.

Seabus (Mar 24, 2005 2:22:43 PM)
So then Gary, right now would you take Palmer or Browning?? (Putting you out on a limb!!)

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 2:22:43 PM)
It wouldn't be fair to either of the two to say one over the other but knowing how highly the Ginn Sr. speaks of Browning, and how good he did in San Antonio, it would be hard to ignore him. Browing has offers from BC, Iowa, Wisconsin, MSU, NW, Syracuse, Cincy and Akron. He has a 4.2 GPA and Ginn Sr. told me he's smart enough and athletic enough to play any position on the offensive line. And he would love to be a Buckeye. But so would Palmer. Can't go wrong with either of them. Those two and Tilley have to be the next tier of Ohio lineman right now.

BuckeyeDave (Mar 24, 2005 2:24:21 PM)
Clarett could have been Matt Leinart instead off Matt Leinart!

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 2:24:21 PM)
I have to agree with that. But if if's and but's were candy and nuts, oh what a xmas we'd have.

fotownbuckeye (Mar 24, 2005 2:24:39 PM)
Why do we need to continue talking about Mo? Its over....let it go.....please.....

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 2:24:39 PM)
I have to agree with that too.

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 2:25:16 PM)
Is that all for today. Any last questions before I sign off?

BuckeyeDave (Mar 24, 2005 2:27:18 PM)
Thanks Gary. (Haven't received my March Bucknuts the magazine yet. Whats up with that?)

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 2:27:18 PM)
I don't want to pass the buck but I will. Let Steve know on his ezin message board.

cliffosu (Mar 24, 2005 2:27:28 PM)
Thank you Gary. I'm looking forward to the Rose Bowl.

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 2:27:28 PM)
Me too.

GaryHousteau (Mar 24, 2005 2:28:35 PM)
Thanks everyone for spending some time chatting with me today or for reading the chat after it's been posted. I'm really looking forward to spring football now. Can't wait for it to get started. Have a great day. Go Bucks!
