Linebacker Thaddeus Gibson might be Ohio's top defensive prospect this season. The linebacker was caught off guard on signing day when Ohio State extended a scholarship offer, and since then, more schools have added their name to the list.
"Michigan did finally offer," Gibson said. "I was there two weeks ago. Beautiful campus.
"Boston College, Purdue... North Carolina called yesterday and said they would be offering soon."
The 6-3, 207-pound linebacker is still not ready to narrow things down. He has not yet finalized his summer destinations either.
"I'm still not sure what I want to do or where I want to go or anything like that as far as visits or camps are concerned," he said.
Gibson added that there was one school he hoped to camp at and that he won't be rushing into anything, but right now, it looks like a two-team battle.
"I'm going to camp out at USC," he said. "I'm going to take my time and look into some schools. But it's probably going to come down to Ohio State and Michigan."
Gibson is currently focused on track. He had planned to come down to Ohio State to check out a spring practice session, but a track meet fell on the same day.
"I'm throwing shot and discus now," he said. "This is going to be my first year doing that. I was supposed to be a sprinter, but I was losing too much weight."
Gibson had 17 sacks last year. He has been clocked in the 4.4 40 range, and he is improving his strength.
"Just today I maxed 315 on the bench," he said.
Gibson also has a friend at Ohio State in linebacker Brandon Smith. Smith's brother Darius is currently a teammate of Gibson, and both have been to OSU's campus multiple times.
"Me and Darius Smith are real tight," Gibson said. "Yes, Brandon Smith is his brother. You know those walkie-talkie phones? I speak to Brandon regularly on it. I have not asked him about moving to defensive end, but I think that is going to happen."
Gibson will be taking his test May 11.
