Hello everyone, it's early and right now I seem to be in here alone so introduce yourself as you enter and then fire away with any questions that you may have...if you have any.
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:04:42 PM)
I had tentative plans for a remote locatoin for a chat today but the plans fell through so it's just another ordinary chat day...let's try to make it extraordinary shall we?
buckgrad (Apr 15, 2005 1:07:47 PM)
Is the weather nice up there finally? I hear the winter was brutal?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:07:47 PM)
Hi buckgrad...it's been a wonderful week of weather which probably does not bode well for the spring game a week from tomorrow. I was in Coldwater Ohio yesterday and the sky was amazing and the weather was fabulous. Couldn't ask for a better day. And it was a long and cold winter yes.
bucks24 (Apr 15, 2005 1:10:29 PM)
Hey Gary. What kind of impression did Homan leave on you?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:10:29 PM)
Hi bucks24...I hate to sound like a broken record but this kid just has a marvelous disposition about him. He's friendly, reserved, shy, humble, but he's so eager and anxious to be a Buckeye ... I just love to be around kids like him. You couldn't ask for two finer young men than Chris Wells and Ross Homan to begin your recruiting class with. Tremendous young man and he can play football too
bobby (Apr 15, 2005 1:12:03 PM)
one couldn't help but notice the pictures of homan going up the day after we lose our dc.might there be some concern of a defection or are we just giving him some love
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:12:03 PM)
Hi bobby...totally unrelated events and I can assure you and even guarantee you that losing Snyder will no effect on retaining Homan or not. Homan is a Buckeye, no question whatsoever. Coincidence but perfect fodder for the conspiracy theorists out there...smile!
buckgrad (Apr 15, 2005 1:14:45 PM)
I hear a lot of people upset that the practices have been cut off from the media, I think its a good idea, no distractions and a chance to come up with new things without giving the enemy a chance to see it. What do you think?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:14:45 PM)
buckgrad, personally it doesn't effect me because I'm 180 miles away but I was so used to getting out of my car at YSU and walking on the practice field there when Jim Tressel was coaching and was never ever told I couldn't watch a practice or come to one. I understand the stage is much bigger and I know they are doing some things offensively they don't want us to know...but I have eyes at practice for me anyway. A couple of phone calls and emails and I have an idea of what they're doing. It is what it is.
BuckeyeDave (Apr 15, 2005 1:17:37 PM)
I asked Steve this same question yesterday; If you had to choose either Smith form Colerain or Brown form Princeton, which would you take and why? Thanks.
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:17:37 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave, thanks for being one of the loyal members of the chats that Bucknuts provides...we recognize people like you and appreciate your participation. That being said, with nothing really to base it on at this point other than some video and interviews...I watched the championship game and I like what I see from Smith. I think he can play guard or tackle and he's nasty. Add to that the fact that his dad was a Buckeye...I think you can see where I'm going. I'm curious why you ask just between those two?
BuckeyeJoe (Apr 15, 2005 1:19:20 PM)
I see from my online application for tickets that I can order Indiana tickets. There is only one digit to fill in for quantity, limiting me to a max of 9. Does anyone know if I could order as many as I needed?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:19:20 PM)
Hi BuckeyeJoe, I hate to pass the Buck but it's better than ignoring your question completely...so you might want to either ask Steve directly through an ezIN message or just post that question on any of the forums and I'm sure someone can help you. I would have to answer just for the sake of it and give you wrong information. Sorry! Smile!
buckgrad (Apr 15, 2005 1:22:21 PM)
With the draft coming up, who do you hope Cleveland and cincy get for the 1st round picks? I hear the Texas LB may be going to the Browns, seems to high for a LB to go. Thanks
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:22:21 PM)
Well buckgrad...I really don't know what direction the Browns are going to go in and I could care less what Cincy does with their pick. I like Mike Williams from USC over just about everyone including Edwards...I think they can get a QB in the second if they have to have one. I'm not sold on Johnson the LB from Texas at the third pick so I would either trade down or take Williams at three. I would be happy with Alex Smith if the Browns take him but I don't know if they will at three. I'm not a Bengals fan...sorry!
bucks24 (Apr 15, 2005 1:25:40 PM)
How much does it hurt a defense when you lose your D.C.?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:25:40 PM)
With the kind of interchangeable talent the Buckeyes have on defense bucks24...it doesn't matter who our D-coordinator. For instance,...when Marcus Freeman is so good that you would consider moving a guy like Carpenter to the middle because you can't keep Freeman off the field...how could you mess that up. Freeman is a flat out *itch and they may not be able to keep him off the field this year period. Could you see, for instance, Hawk, Carpenter and Freeman across the board. No disrespect to Anthony Schlegel but that's the kind of talent OSU has at the linebacker spots. Wow!
fotownbuckeye (Apr 15, 2005 1:26:52 PM)
SO what are they doing then???
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:26:52 PM)
Hi fotownbuckeye...If I said everything I know, they would have to shoot me! Smile! Let's just say they are being creative this spring and I hope some of what they're doing this spring shows up in the Texas game.
AnotherBuck (Apr 15, 2005 1:28:15 PM)
Gary, do you think Tressel tried Gary Blackney before promoting Heacock?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:28:15 PM)
No...Mel Tucker was their man...and from what I know or was told...they tried hard to get him back.
bucks24 (Apr 15, 2005 1:31:48 PM)
Have you heard of any scoop about Ted Ginn's involvement at practice and where he is getting reps at?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:31:48 PM)
Yes I have and I will just say it is on offense. He's a stud, period, as we all know. Holmes, Ginn, Gonzo, Hall and Lyons should figure prominently in the offense next year if what they're doing this spring comes to fruition in the fall. Holmes and Hall are banged up a bit now from what I understand.
buckicrazy (Apr 15, 2005 1:33:46 PM)
Do you think our defense will miss a step with Snyder gone or does the fact that we are returning a lot of starters offset this?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:33:46 PM)
Hi buckicrazy...OSU is ridiculously loaded on defense so no I do not think the defense will miss a step with Snyder gone. Sure there is an adjustment period but as long as the recipe doesn't change too much by the fall, then the unit should be able to operate on autopilot for the most part.
rbuck (Apr 15, 2005 1:39:00 PM)
Sorry, Late, any early word on who is going to fill the empty defensive coaching spot?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:39:01 PM)
Hi rbuck...I was traveling on the road for the most part yesterday and was kept abreast of things happening by my cell phone for the most part because I had no idea what was in the news already or not. I hear that Bob Davie, who played for Bill Narduzzi at YSU-not JT, could still be someone that could be brought in to possible fill the d-line position. I was surprised to hear that yesterday because he's been a coordinator and a head coach before, but I think if he would do it then Jim Tressel would be the man he would do it for. But I have no idea really. I heard that there is no immediate rush to fill the one spot right now so don't look for anything to happen during the balance of the spring.
TxBuckeye (Apr 15, 2005 1:46:01 PM)
Hi Gary, This is my 1st chat, I want to thank you for the great work you and the Bucknut staff do! If it hasn't been asked yet, Do you believe Heacock was the best choice? And if not who was your 1st 3 choices? Who, in your opinion will get the open slot and what position? Thanks!
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:46:01 PM)
Hi TxBuckeye and thanks for choosing this chat to lose your virginity...smile! Sure I think Heacock was a good choice and a safe choice and typical JT choice. Was it the best? Jim Heacock can flat out coach. He proved it at Illinois State and JT certainly respect his ability as a coach. It's a safe conservative move and it fit's JT's MO. I would have been excited to see a guy like, for instance, Bo Pelini come in because he's a Y-towner and two he's a Buckeye. I also like Bob Davie because he can coach defense and coincidentally he's a YSU alum. I don't know who else was out there. I know some people that really were hoping for Tucker to come back. I'm happy because Heacock is safe JT move and it doesn't really surprise me in the least. It's not glamorous but nothing JT does really is. He just wins football games. I really can't comment on the open position except to say I heard Davie's name mentioned yesterday by someone who knows. Whether that's even possible or not is beyond my knowledge at this time.
labsbeabmm (Apr 15, 2005 1:49:35 PM)
As a buckeye in Pittsburgh, I would love to see the Panthers play OSU. Any hope in the near future. Pitt is under pressure to upgrade its non-conf schedule and has added Neb.
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:49:35 PM)
Hi labsbeabmm...Youngstown State plays Pitt this year if I'm not mistaken....I'm certain that's not the upgrade they're looking for. Someone told me that so I hope that's correct. I'm sure that's something our new AD will consider in the future but I have no idea how the scheduling situation is right now. I'm sure JT has a tremendous amount of input in that if not the ultimate say.
edbuck51 (Apr 15, 2005 1:52:59 PM)
Was JT as restrictive with access to the teams at YSU as he is at OSU? Do you think he is protecting his schemes, the players, or what?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:52:59 PM)
As I said in an earlier answer...I never was told to leave practice at practice. I would literally be standing behind JT during hoot and holler drills, I kid you not. The two situations just aren't comparable. Yes they are protecting schemes and formations and controversies this spring for that matter from what I can figure.
BuckeyeDave (Apr 15, 2005 1:57:23 PM)
What would Miami have to do to beat the Buckeyes?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 1:57:23 PM)
Lock the OSU team in St. John arena during the skull session so they couldn't get out and would have to forfeit the game. I just see this team being a very dominant on defense and very efficient and proficient on offense with a veteran line and many talented skill players. I think it's okay if the fans understand that Ohio State will be very good this year and the fans should expect greatness this year. And Ohio State needs to deliver in a big way.
edbuck51 (Apr 15, 2005 2:02:12 PM)
I saw your photos with Homan. Are you doing an article and what where your impressions of him?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:02:12 PM)
Yes edbuck buck I am doing a story on Homan as well. I spent some time talking with Homan and the head coach at Coldwater, John Reed. Reed is just a wonderful coach to deal with and was so gracious with his time yesterday. I think OSU fans will really enjoy watching Ross Homan play at Ohio State. He really can't wait to be a Buckeye. I'm really glad I made the 4 hour plus trip yesterday.
bucks24 (Apr 15, 2005 2:08:00 PM)
You don't need to give me any inside information but how do you think the offense is going to be run this coming season. Do you see a spread out attack where we pass more then 50%of the time?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:08:01 PM)
I would like to believe that bucks24 but I also know that JT has always preferred to play "not to lose" and has never really had a "play to win" offensive philosophy. So no matter what they work on this spring, if he can stay close to the vest on offense, with the sturdy defense OSU has, then he will tend to play it that way. You know a lot of quarterback draws out of the spread formation and that type of thing will be a staple for sure. But yes I do expect to see the Buckeyes in the spread formation about half the time.
Guest (Apr 15, 2005 2:13:03 PM)
Gary, do think Heacock is capable, and is he the long term solution?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:13:03 PM)
bm asks if I think Heacock is capable and if he is the long term solution... and I would say yes and yes. I'm not too keen on this co-coordinator stuff but it's just JT's way of rewarding both guys I presume. Like Snyder and Tucker?? When you look at the coaching credentials of Heacock and Luke Fickell, it's not even comparable or worthy of making a comparison...and that's no offense to Fickell, it's just fact. Call Heacock the coordinator and leave it at that. Jon Heacock was a pretty good d-coordinator for JT at YSU and I'm sure Jim will be a fine one for JT at OSU. Remember the underlying principle of the defense, even though JT's hands aren't in it, is to not get beat. Keep everything in front of you and play fast and physical. That's the ultimate blueprint no matter who is the defensive coordinator.
buckgrad (Apr 15, 2005 2:14:59 PM)
Gary, any word on how Roy Hall and the 2nd cornerback are developing?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:14:59 PM)
Roy Hall is having a good spring from what I've been told so I hope this recent injury will not set him back too much. I also hear that Sirjo Welch is a guy they really like at corner as well. I don't know if he's their answer or not but I do hear that they like what they are seeing from him this spring.
redondo (Apr 15, 2005 2:20:15 PM)
Hi Gary - So, if they (JT) wanted Tucker badly, what stood between them and a deal? Was it $$?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:20:15 PM)
Hi redondo...I'm sure that was a part of it yes. But I'm also guessing that Tucker was already committed to what's going on in Cleveland and what his expectations were there under Romeo. I understand that Tucker's wife is an attorney so I would guess that money wasn't the major objective but it was an issue I would guess. Steve has always talked about him not wanting to burn bridges with the NFL but people who know Tucker have told me that he wants to be a head coach in college some day. So maybe he'll want to be a head coach in the NFL someday now. I think the D-coordinator position at OSU would be a great stepping stone for him becoming a head coach in college...so go figure???
buckicrazy (Apr 15, 2005 2:22:25 PM)
How many LB's do you think the buck's will take in the up and coming recruiting class?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:22:25 PM)
Hi buckicrazy, as long as they get Homan and Gibson that might be enough for this class. I think in the end, the Buckeyes have a really good shot at Gibson as long as his academics are in order. I say two maybe three.
BuckeyeDave (Apr 15, 2005 2:25:36 PM)
If Davie were to get the D-Line job, how much, do you think, he would influence the rest of the defense? How do you think Columbus and Ohio would react to Ohio St hiring a coach that was summarily fired by the competition?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:25:36 PM)
In all fairness, that's strictly a hypothetical and hearsay at best. Anybody that JT would bring in would know the expectations ahead of time and I'm sure Davie would comply if he were to come on board. I personally would be excited to see someone of Davie's caliber come on board. Almost everybody gets hired and fired at some point so that really has no bearing on anything.
BuckeyeDave (Apr 15, 2005 2:28:00 PM)
What's a "Hoot and Holler" drill?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:28:01 PM)
It's the drill that JT's team does on the first day of contact where they pit linemen against each other with a QB and a RB on one side and tackler on the other and the back has to try to make it across the goal line in a confined territory. It's just the main kickoff to contact drills in the spring and in the summer.
TxBuckeye (Apr 15, 2005 2:32:44 PM)
Are you confident that OSU will land the Big 3 OL (Boren, Brown, Connor). Ohio seems loaded this year in OL talent do you see OSU extending a couple more offers to some instate OLs? If so who?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:32:44 PM)
I just spoke with Boren before I began the chat and Mr. Brown called me on my cell during the chat so I have to call him back after I'm done. Unfortunately I'm not sold on Boren completely as I originally was. I've been keeping in regular contact with him and like Rico McCoy, Boren's tone has switched since he first went to Michigan's practice. Boren's going to Michigan's spring game tomorrow, so of course that is not a good thing but it's not a bad thing either. His dad played there we must remember. Justin and I have candid conversations and I continue to think that in the end, sometime in August, he will choose OSU. Too close to home...bottom line. But yes I am a bit concerned. Also he said he might not be able to make it to OSU's spring game next week but not to read anything negative into that. He is trying to change his schedule to make it.
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:35:29 PM)
As far as the rest of the question... with a boat load of talent like Tilley and Browning and Palmer and Nagy and a few others that we may not even know about yet, I think Ohio State will be happy with the three or four linemen they do end up with. I still think OSU stands a good chance to land Boren, Brown and Smith though.
buckgrad (Apr 15, 2005 2:38:34 PM)
Do you keep in touch with the out of state signees coming in next year (Wells, Williams, Worthington etc...) if so what are they telling you? Thanks
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:38:34 PM)
I have a print story to do on Maurice Wells. I've been in touch with Laurinaitis recently, it's been a while since I spoke to Worthington...I need to contact him again, and I haven't kept in touch with Williams other than an e-mail or two to his dad. If I only had more hours in the day! But yes I need to get an update from some of the defensive guys for sure now.
Cover2 (Apr 15, 2005 2:41:06 PM)
Hey Gary -- on the recruiting front, what is the story with Euclid's Thad Gibson? Sounds like he's going to be a late decision. Is this kid headed up north or does he stay home? What factor(s) will make up his mind at the end of the day? Thanks!
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:41:06 PM)
Hi Cover2, Gibson was one of the guys I was working on seeing today but it just didn't work out. I think, from some of the people that I've been talking to, that there's a good chance we will be seeing him in scarlet and gray after next season. I would like to be able to tell you something more but I have nothing concrete at this time. But I think it's just a matter of time before he comes on board.
buckgrad (Apr 15, 2005 2:43:09 PM)
How is Frost doing at TE this spring. I heard last year he was an all american without pads on, then when the pads went on he wasn't quite the same. Injuries played a part, but how is he coming along? Is he fighting off Nicol?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:43:09 PM)
I think Frost has the potential to be a big play TE and I've heard that he's one of the favorite targets of at least one OSU quarterback. He can catch anything in his zip code from I've been told and he just looks really good size-wise. I think he could be an All-American with his pads on at some point.
bucks24 (Apr 15, 2005 2:48:27 PM)
Hey Gary, in you honest opinion which freshman do you see as having the most impact on the field next year.?
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:48:27 PM)
Well, I would say Jamario O'Neal and Freddie Lenix have a shot on the special teams at least and Alex Boone in the two deep but that's about it at this point. I see this team very deep without the freshman. Vernon Gholston and Alex Barrow will have first dibs on the d-line after the guys already working in there. LB's and secondary are all deep unless O'Neal can crack in there. Maybe Maurice Wells can crack the rotation at running back but I think they really like what Pittman is doing this spring and Haw will have the second shot if Pittman isn't the guy. So there's not a lot of chances for impact freshman this year other than special teams and anyone can end up there. Maybe Worthington can crack the rotation on the D-line but I'm not betting on it.
buckgrad (Apr 15, 2005 2:49:49 PM)
I'm new to the chats, only been a member for about 2 months. Are there others who do these chats during the season? Good work, thanks
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:49:49 PM)
Steve and myself are regulars pretty much, Steve is the mainstay behind everything, and Duane makes a cameo here and there. Kyle does some hoop chats. And of course Bill Conley is a regular contributor to this site. Thanks for participating buckgrad.
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:51:55 PM)
Hey guys that's about it now. I have to get on with some other work and send in my taxes today as well. It's April 15th. I also have to call Mr. Brown back and see what I can find out the latest on his son. I want to thank any old and new to this chat for participating. Thanks for taking the time to send in questions and I'm sorry that I can't get to them all. We
GaryHousteau (Apr 15, 2005 2:52:31 PM)
We'll see you next time and have a great day and enjoy the beautiful weather. See you at the spring game. Go Bucks!
