Hello everyone...I'm coming to you from the Bucknuts Media offices on Lane Ave. in Columbus. It's a little chilly and a little soggy out today but we can hope that the weather will cooperate a little better tomorrow. Please fire away with your questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

Hey Gary, have you had a chance to speak with Mr. Gibson recently?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:08:53 PM)
Hi edbuck51 thanks for starting off the chat this evening with your question about Thaddeus Gibson... No I haven't spoken with him... we've had a difficult time hooking up to this point. I was hoping to see him last week but it didn't work out. I'll stay on him though.
redondo (Apr 22, 2005 6:10:58 PM)
Hi Gary - what's your take on the recruiting acumen of new DC Coach Heacock?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:10:59 PM)
I have to be honest with you, from my perspective his name doesn't come up as much with the recruits as do some of the other coaches, it might have something to do with his areas that he's responsible for and the people that I talk to mainly. I've heard nothing bad or disparaging about him but I haven't heard any Luke Fickell or Jim Bollman type sentiments from the recruits.
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:11:41 PM)
Thanks for the question redondo about Heacock.
edbuck51 (Apr 22, 2005 6:16:56 PM)
There's been talk on the boards about TEs. Reuland hasn't been offered supposedly because there are several Ohio kids besides Cumberland, Chichester and the other one. Reuland is really good. Are there that many Ohio players that are equal, and will the Bucks take more than one TE this year?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:16:56 PM)
I spoke with Cumberland today and he wants to play wide receiver both next year and at the next level. He's really built well. Tall and muscular. He's very fast, ran a good time at the Nike camp at USC last week. He wants to be a big play wide receiver so we shall see how he and Michael McGee are able to hook up next year. Chichester is an intriguing prospect if he picks football. Jake Ballard is also intriguing. I don't see Jerome Jones on offense and don't know a lot about Brett Huffman from Massillon. Reuland has Ohio roots and needs to have some patience and it might work out. Can't really say but he's as good and more polished than just about everyone else.
Karpov (Apr 22, 2005 6:22:04 PM)
I've seen from several credible sources that we seem to be in good shape with the big 3 O-lineman in Ohio: Boren, Smith, and Brown. Is this still the case? Where do you see a guy like Tilley fitting in to OSU's plans, he has a great offer sheet it appears but doesn't seem to be getting much love from the Buckeyes.
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:22:04 PM)
Hi Karpov...I too think the Buckeyes are in pretty good shape with all of the big three lineman in Ohio and if they sweep them all in I will not be surprised a bit. I personally put Tilley in with the second tier group of lineman in Ohio consisting of mainly Ryan Palmer, Bryant Brown, Joe Thomas and Bill Nagy. I'm sure that Ohio State would really like to know where they stand with the Big 3 before they aggressively any other llineman. I think after their summer camp OSU will have a good idea where they stand as some of those 3 announce their intentions to them either publicly or privately. Tilley is another guy that needs to be patient at this time.
redondo (Apr 22, 2005 6:25:50 PM)
Hi Gary - Which way did the needle go for you on the kick scrimmage (actually two needles one for place kicking and one for punting) - toward more confident or toward more skittish?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:25:50 PM)
I have to be honest that I don't much yet about the kick scrimmage but I understand Huston did well and I'm encouraged to hear that. I think Huston is the perfect transition kicker for this important season, much better than having a Mike Nugent freshman year type kicker for this group. I'll worry about the next kicker, next year. I'm encouraged about our punt game as well. It's the most important play in football!
Guest (Apr 22, 2005 6:32:15 PM)
I just logged on. So, is this gonna be the best OFFENSE the buckeyes have fielded since the 1996-1998 teams? From everything i am hearing, the O has been rediculously good this spring.
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:32:15 PM)
Diehardbucfan2004 wants to know if this offense could be the best since the 96-98 teams???? Yeahhhhh! Potentially the best ever in my lifetme if Pittman flourishes as soon as this year. I like Haw a lot but from what I'm hearing, Pittman is going to be the man! And the talent of Ginn, Holmes and Gonzo et al, give this team a new dimension never seen before at OSU. Two experienced QB's. A solid TE in Hamby and another TE with the potential to be a great one in Frost. Hall is having a lights out spring at whatever position he's lined up. The line is veteranish and rugged. So pick your poison. Love the potential for greatness. Ginn alone gives this offense the chance to be the best ever. We've never seen someone with his overall ability play in the Shoe before. He's special to this generation of Buckeye fans. So enjoy the offense.
edbuck51 (Apr 22, 2005 6:34:25 PM)
Did you go all the way to Bluffton to do the Ricky Matter story or where you checking out some players on your trip (who)?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:34:25 PM)
I made plans to see Ross Homan in Coldwater and I felt compelled for some reason to make it over to Bluffton and I'm glad I went. I was moved tremendously from learning more about his tragic story. May he rest in peace.
JohnnyBuckeye (Apr 22, 2005 6:37:55 PM)
What are your thoughts on Jamario O'Neal and Freddie Lennix? Do they redshirt or not?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:37:55 PM)
Hi JohnnyBuckeye, I think both young men, O'Neal and Lenix (one 'n' not two) are just tremendous football players who are only going to get better. They both have tremendous, Ted Ginn Jr. type ability in their respective positions. Lenix is a great instinct LB and has great speed, I don't care how big he is or isn't. O'Neal can friggin knock your helmet off your head. Both are great kids and both are pretty good football players. I think both will have to see playing time on special teams minimum next year.
Carr (Apr 22, 2005 6:42:43 PM)
Gary, who do you expect to be the 8 man rotation on the D-line this year?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:42:43 PM)
Hi Carr, I'm a Mike Kudla fan so I'll start there and put Richardson on the other end from him. Kudla is a relentless football player. The effort he has is what has allowed him to make more than a couple big plays already in his career. He might not be the best player but he's the hardest worker you'll find on any given play. Richardson needs to come on strong this season. I like Pitcock and Green in the middle to start...no brainers the both of them. Penton and Patterson make six. I'd like to see Vernon Gholston and Alex Barrow step up their play and be in the first 8 in the rotation on the line. Worthington could be added in there as could Sian Cotton. Unless Denlinger is a total stud, I'd hold him out a year. Did I miss anyone there?
diehardbucfan2004 (Apr 22, 2005 6:47:31 PM)
Do, you think any of the incoming recruits will have an impact?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:47:31 PM)
diehardbucfan2004 asks about any incoming recruits making an impact...I have to go with O'Neal and Lenix, Boone, Laurinaitis, Spitler and Worthington for having the best chance to make any impact special teams or other. Jim Cordle will have a big advantage but the line might have enough depth already and he could be redshirted. Datish is a capable center if Mangold gets injured. Maybe Maurice Wells too but I think Pittman is going to emerge in a big way this year and Haw is more than capable as his caddy.
edbuck51 (Apr 22, 2005 6:49:58 PM)
Do you stay in touch with Chris Wells and what is he doing in the off-season? Is he going to enroll early?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:49:58 PM)
I just spoke with Chris Wells today to make sure he's coming down tomorrow and he is. He's doing great, working out hard, he's excited to see a good game and for as much as I know, unless something has changed, he's still on course to enroll early. I will see Akron Garfield open up the season at Akron Hoban on Thursday night of week one. He's working out really hard as he always has.
edbuck51 (Apr 22, 2005 6:51:10 PM)
How many TE do you think OSU will take this year?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:51:10 PM)
I don't know how to answer that so I'll just say one and possibly two.
edbuck51 (Apr 22, 2005 6:53:20 PM)
How about TBDBITL? What are you expecting out of them this year? Is Columbus going to be crazy this fall or what?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:53:20 PM)
Love TBDBITL! If you're an Ohio State fan and you've never seen the band perform at an Ohio State game then there is no way to describe exactly what you are missing. Before, during and after, Ohio State has The Best Damn Band In The Land! Period.
bamabucknut (Apr 22, 2005 6:54:38 PM)
Should we be concerned....I heard Well took or was taking a trip to that school up north ?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:54:38 PM)
Hi bamabucknut...no concern at about Chris Wells going to Ohio State. Zero!
diehardbucfan2004 (Apr 22, 2005 6:56:37 PM)
Oh yeah, Nader Abdallah has been very good this spring also.
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 6:56:37 PM)
Yes I'd like to see Abdallah work his way into the rotation. I think our depth on the interior is even greater than on the outside. But the outside guys are young and quick and should be fun to watch when it's their turn. But this is a veteran unit this year and mostly experienced guys will be playing this year.
diehardbucfan2004 (Apr 22, 2005 7:00:37 PM)
Watching the video it looked to me like Jamario had the Teddy Ginn punt/kick return ability. I don't know if he will be as good as Teddy or not. But, shouldn't he have been rated higher. Some rankings only had him at 4 stars (which I know 4 stars is damn good) but, seems like he should of been ranked higher.
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:00:37 PM)
Teddy Ginn was more elusive than any player that I've ever watched in high school and you all seen that first hand last year. He made sick plays in almost every game in high school in his senior season. Jamario is good as punt returner, big, strong and fast but he's not TGII. Teddy is Teddy as Steve and I say. Jamario is what he is and he's a pretty darn good football player, regardless of the rankings. I'm not a big proponent of stars or rankings as some of you may know.
edbuck51 (Apr 22, 2005 7:03:40 PM)
It's been reported Sirjo is having a good spring, but I'm expecting a lot out of Shaun Lane. Do you have any skinny on how his spring has gone and where he sits on the depth chart?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:03:40 PM)
I've heard from many different sources, and I've been talking to a lot of coaches lately, that Sirjo is having a stellar spring and I'll leave it at that. He's doing a bang up job at corner from what I understand. Now what that will translate to in the fall we shall wait and see. But good news is what I've been hearing about the Sirjo. And face it, he was stellar on special teams last year so maybe he just has a knack to him that we're all about to discover.
edbuck51 (Apr 22, 2005 7:05:32 PM)
We've reviewed the offense, defense and special teams. How do you see the coaching coming together this year? Any scoop on the next defensive coach?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:05:32 PM)
Pete Rextis name was mentioned earlier this week I believe and I'm aware of him from his days at YSU as a player and coach. He's a JT disciple so there's nothing wrong with that obviously. I'd be happy if it was him. I hope to learn more tomorrow from other sources about what's going to go down and when.

GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:08:49 PM)
swolsein wants to know if I think Ohio State will have an undefeated season and my answer to that is if OSU gets by Texas then they could have smooth sailing through to the Michigan. There could be a slight bump in the road at Happy Valley but sure I think Ohio State could have a perfect season and get into the Rose Bowl.
diehardbucfan2004 (Apr 22, 2005 7:11:36 PM)
I heard Barrow has had a monster spring. It would be nice if we could get a D-end to get a consistent pass rush. I believe that is the only thing this Defense really lacks. If we could only bring back Will Smith and Mike Vrabel. hehe
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:11:36 PM)
I only saw Barrow twice in action in both of the all-star games last summer and he's extremely smooth and fluid for a defensive lineman. I think he has a terrific innate ability to play on the defensive be it inside or out. But I look for him to excel at the college level as an outside end. Great looking prospect in the long in my opinion. Could be a total bonus for Buckeye fans who don't think about Barrow very much.
diehardbucfan2004 (Apr 22, 2005 7:14:14 PM)
I know you and everyone else have been shut out from practice this year. But, from what information you have gathered, have the bucks been able to successfully bring back the power I, point of attack fotball with pulling lineman.. If we could implement that with everything else we have been doing, we would be downright unstoppable.
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:14:14 PM)
Bottom line is JT will be true to JT so if and when smash mouth can successfully be employed, he will do so. It's a part of his coaching fabric and being. But I've been hearing about all kinds of goodies this spring that OSU is working on so we shall see. I see a tame and bland offensive performance tomorrow overall, both squads. Sort of the opposite of what fans might be expecting.

Hi back to you smartbuck!
edbuck51 (Apr 22, 2005 7:17:49 PM)
The Boeckman chatter seems to be quieting. Do you think the reality of being behind two experienced Elite 11 QBs is coming to the fore?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:17:49 PM)
I'm actually looking forward to the Boeckman - Schoenhoft battle in three years from now. Add Mike Hartline to that equation and it could be a monster competition for the spring of 2007. I may be in the minority but I don't see Boeckman overtaking either experienced QB. It's a pair and a spare and Boeckman will likely be the spare this year and next.
JohnnyBuckeye (Apr 22, 2005 7:21:02 PM)
Are you hearing anything more as to who the staff is leaning towards at the QB position? Obviously, we will know more after camp, but as of right now do you see them leaning more towards a dropback QB (Hartline?) or someone more like Troy Smith (Davis, etc.?)
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:21:02 PM)
Hi JohnnyBuckeye...I've heard nothing solid about the recruiting situation for QB. I still think Hartline, Davis and Schlichester are the main competition for one spot. I see Davis being more in the Smith mold than Hartline obviously but Hartline is a great athlete. He's just very tall. I haven't seen enough of Schlichter yet to really form an opinion but he definitely has the pedigree to be a great one.
swolstein (Apr 22, 2005 7:21:50 PM)
How big of a loss is Nugent really?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:21:50 PM)
The loss of Nugent is huge but I really believe having Huston cushions the loss. I like the leg on Huston.
JohnnyBuckeye (Apr 22, 2005 7:22:24 PM)
Any more info on what direction Thaddeus Gibson is leaning? OSU or Michigan?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:22:24 PM)
I would definitely say Ohio State from what I've been told.
edbuck51 (Apr 22, 2005 7:24:44 PM)
I can never remember this much excitement about a season this early in the year. What do you think the keys are to getting to the Rose Bowl?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:24:44 PM)
Having a healthy Ted Ginn Jr. Ohio State's depth is so solid and deep just about everywhere (defensive end is a small concern) and TGII is the difference maker. In a big way.
JohnnyBuckeye (Apr 22, 2005 7:28:02 PM)
Do you see any recruits that we really want (like Manningham) ending up at Michigan?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:28:02 PM)
Good question JohnnyBuckeye... Maybe Mike Hartline as strange as that sounds. I believe he ultimately knows where he stands with Ohio State but if they don't start to come his way in a big way, then Michigan would probably love to steal him away. I like Robbie Parris and he could end up there or maybe Notre Dame. And maybe, just maybe, Justin Boren. But I see him picking OSU in the end. Just my gut feeling from our conversations we've had.
JohnnyBuckeye (Apr 22, 2005 7:28:31 PM)
I've heard some rumblings as to some potential minor changes to the uniforms. Have you heard anything?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:28:32 PM)
No I haven't and hope not. Keep it traditional. Love it.
swolstein (Apr 22, 2005 7:29:57 PM)
I really like Maurice Wells from what I know of him....Do you ever think he'll seriously get a chance to carry the rock at OSU?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:29:57 PM)
Maurice Wells comes so highly rated from a guy like Bill Conley that I have to have solid expectations for him. And if he's as good advertised, then he will have to see the field. But I think people will love watching Pittman and Haw this year.
swolstein (Apr 22, 2005 7:32:04 PM)
I say 21-14 victory against Texas...What are your thoughts?
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:32:04 PM)
Too early for a really solid prediction but I predict it will be a great night for a great game after watching the Texas high school team and Colerain play earlier in the day, if that game is still on. Can't wait for that doubleheader of football.
diehardbucfan2004 (Apr 22, 2005 7:34:10 PM)
Thanks for the chat Gary, gotta go.
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:34:10 PM)
Thanks for participating in the chat diehardbucfan2004 and everyone else. On that note, I'll say by for now. I'm looking forward to the game tomorrow and talking with a lot of high school coaches and players. Regardless of the weather it should be a great day.
GaryHousteau (Apr 22, 2005 7:35:33 PM)
And of course good luck to Nugent, Fox, Fraser and our other Buckeyes on NFL draft day Saturday and Sunday. Go Bucks!
